I will probably remember being insulted in this People's store for my whole life. Maybe this feedback will help the franchise owner and store staff to improve their policies and treat customers better. I also spoke to People's corporate customer service, which is now at a US head office in Texas and Ohio. We had a friendly chat with the sales person, who said the claws on the diamond are worn and need to be sent in to be replaced.  Then she asked how much I paid for the ring.  I said I didn't know because it was 35 years ago. I was also aware that this is a gift, and the recipient of the gift is there too.  It was not appropriate, which I tried to explain without much success.  The store manager got involved and tried to "help" by saying that the ring was probably only worth $400 or $500, but that they could put a (slightly) higher value if I wished.  I said yes, but that just made it worse. Buying an engagement ring was one of the most important days of my life, and is for many people.  But the People's staff trivialized the process, and seemed to be trying to get the ring valuation as low as possible (in case it was lost).  I asked them if they even have any diamond engagement rings in the store costing in the range they were suggesting.  That prompted them to try to find the cheapest ring they had, which just escalated the situation.   The store policy should be to say they are putting a value on the ring for shipping insurance, but they know the ring may be more valuable or have higher personal value. (I don't care what they put down for any internal shipping that they need to do.) When I made the purchase at around age 19, it was the second-largest purchase I had made in my life, after my first car.  I think the ring cost about 1/3 the cost of that car, which I needed to take a loan for. And $1 in 1981 is not worth less now;  it would probably cost at least twice as much in 2018 dollars for the equivalent value.  But the flippant way they said the engagement ring is "only worth $400 or $500" made it comparable to one trip to the grocery store or Costco now. They also did not account for the quality of the stone. Rather than demean your customer and ask an illogical question about the value from 35 years ago (as if I would even remember, and as if the value in 1980s dollars can even be used now) -- wouldn't it be better for them just to set a value for shipping based on their expertise with the value?  Clearly they knew the value, because they went to great lengths to try to demonstrate how little our ring was worth. The whole process was insulting and demeaning.  It was unnecessary, and didn't even make sense;  Peoples should have a policy to just use a reasonable value for the shipping, based on current values and what the store personnel recommend.  But I don't want to be insulted about something that my wife has worn every day for decades, and I don't want my wife to feel that was cheap.  It was a huge investment at the time. Peoples Jewellers in Canada and Zales in the US spends a lot of money promoting the value of life events like getting engaged.  So to be fundamentally insulted like this about a purchase from 35 years ago is bad for their brand and reputation. They tried to save a few bucks on shipping insurance, at the cost of permanently losing a customer and all of our family's purchases for the future.  As a customer, I should never leave a store feeling like I was just assaulted.  Or insulted.  Trying to low-ball you on the value because of shipping insurance is not respectful to customers, and could be handled a lot better.  Why should there ever be a discussion about the value of a gift in front of the recipient?  Totally unnecessary.  Demeaning, for both me and the bride.

I have always found the staff to be very cheerful and knowledgeable as well. Most recently I purchased a gift for each of the girls in my wedding here. After hemming and hawing over all of my options, and probably driving the salesperson crazy, I decided to buy them each a very pretty compact mirror. The staff person, no surprise, was very friendly and we ended up getting into a long conversation about each of our upcoming nuptials. You don't find that level of friendliness at every store you go to, and to find it so consistently among different staff members each time a I visit makes it even more remarkable.

My partner and I decided to set a date for our wedding shortly after we got these rings, so one of the first orders of business was to have the rings resized for my (I think fairly normal sized) fingers. I got a quote from a downtown store close to my office, and for the diamond engagement ring to be resized as well as the prongs re-done (the ring is platinum), it was gong to cost about $600 (plus tax). I asked my partner to get a quote from Trinity, so we could compare. For the exact same work (resizing the ring in platinum and re doing the prongs), the cost from Trinity was $180 (plus tax). What a price difference! Resizing the wedding band was only $80. My partner left them at Trinity immediately because it was such a good price. On top of that, the rings were done within a week, and the workmanship is excellent. My heirloom rings look beautiful. I'd highly recommend this place.
