Awesome food. The town seems to be losing restaurants. A true hidden gem. Be sure to call ahead as seating is limited!

Totem lodge was great from a resort/facilities standpoint. However, for the otherwise…read moreself-sufficient angler that is looking to rent boats and take on the lake yourself, do not go the Totem. The rental boats do not have trolling motors and the staff will tell you, "the gas engines slow down slower than a trolling motor," which is obviously untrue. The engines are newer, but the boats themselves have very little storage, feel like toy boats and don't have stern safety lights. While the staff are wonderfully nice people, they are generally unorganized and unhelpful from a fishing/basic communication standpoint. Your questions are generally met with blank stares and, "let me ask 'so and so,'" if not completely forgotten about. We were not given any run-downs on areas of the lake to use extra caution with or general guidance on any fishing spots. On day one, the owner recommended we go to the Wiley point location for better fishing before we had even unpacked our trucks; not exactly what you want to hear when arriving for a week long fishing trip. The highlight of Totem was the thorough housekeeping crew and the two dock guys Carlo and Keenan. We will not be going back to Totem.

In my opinion, this is likely one of the better hotels in the area, and it is a landmark as well at the waterfront, so I figured it may have a better standard than some of the others. Since I have never stayed anywhere else in Kenora, I am not sure if that is true. But I will talk about the good and the bad with my stay. The Bad ------------- There was two beds in the room, and when I sat on the first one, the springs were gone. I sunk like a stone, and the springs made a very loud protest. I crossed my fingers and thankfully when I sat on the second bed, it was perfectly fine. The shower had very little temperature control. When I had the shower's hot water tank cranked on high, it only came out warm. It wasnt cold and my showers were confortable, but I couldnt add more heat. Room service did not show up every day. Matter of fact, then showed up once. By showed up, they asked me in the hall on my way out for DINNER if I required service. I said yes. The other days -- no service at all. The Good -------------- The staff were very courteous. I ran into nothing but nice people. The pool is gorgeous. Its on the top floor of the hotel with a stunning view of the lake. The restaurant was very good (but pricey for Kenora). Regardless I ate there once, sometimes twice a day, because the food was consistently good, and the view of the lake was outstanding. The rate was fair. I paid $104 a night, which i thought was an awesome rate for the location.

We were grateful for a place to stay because we came into Kenora late and most of the places that we could afford were full. We took the last room in this "poorer relation" from the Travelodge. In general, it was good. Old and outdated, but clean. I liked that they had a full kitchen. We didn't need the oven, but the full fridge was nice to clean out our cooler and not play Tetris with those mini fridges. Decent location as well. The beds were fine, however the room was stuffy. Mind you it was very hot outside. If we were in Kenora again, I would probably not stay here and try somewhere else, but if you are "stuck" it is a fine solution.

I felt horrible letting my baby crawl on the floor but there's not much I could do. Tried to keep her on the bed as much as possible. The corner of the room had a large red stain - hopefully nothing died there. The bed linens were clean but the beds were springy and worn. The bathroom vanity looked new-ish and clean as did the tub/shower. Stairs - no elevator at the back where you park. Not sure if there is an elevator at the front. Cheap pet fee of 15$ and convenient location are the upsides.
