Slowly working our way through trying all the spots along Hastings. We settled on Indian Village Eatery, a small Pakistani spot. They're next door to the High Point Beer & Wine Shop. We dropped in on a Friday evening (around 8:00pm). The inside is cramped but there's three tables for dine in (total of 10 seats). Service is bare bones; when we went, the son was the only one waitering. Had to ask for extra plates, utensils, waters, etc. The menu is split into samosas, pakoras, wraps, biryani, meat (tandoori chicken, chicken, lamb, fish), vegetarian, flatbreads and desserts. They have lunch specials (12:00pm to 5:00pm) and all day specials. The bestseller sampler ($40.00) seemed very reasonable. All entrees come with a side (rice, naan or roti). They didn't ask for spice level so make sure to request that if you're a spice head. - Sides - we opted for two rices, two naans and a garlic naan ($0.50 extra). The garlic naan wasn't worth the upgrade; all you get is chunks of garlic inside. The naan itself reminded me more of paratha with a more denser, flat texture. - Mixed vegetable pakoras ($7.00) - oddly, this didn't come with the green chutney but still was our favourite dish of the night. Pakoras were perfectly deep fried yet still light and crunchy. - Eggplant bharta ($9.00 small) - we usually love anything eggplant but this was a touch mushy. - Aloo gobi ($9.00 small) - more potato than caulfilower. Flavours were mute and borderline bland. - Chicken vindaloo ($10.50 small) - chicken was small and scarce. Wasn't wowed by the sauce. - Fish curry ($14.50 large) - this was the best of the four entrees we ordered. Fish was tender and mix of vegetables balanced things out. Debit or cash only. Cheap prices and appreciate the different size options at IVE but lacking quality. 2.5 stars.

Had some quick take out dinner here on a rainy Saturday night! Ordered: large butter chicken & large lamb curry (both with 2 sides rice & roti) & 3 beef samosas. Overall not bad...butter chicken was quite cinnamon-y...and lamb curry was a tad salty...neither dish was spicy...like maybe 1/10 spicy-ness maybe I had to ask for the chilli pepper or something (I like my Indian food ~ 7-8/10 spicy maybe she toned it down for Canadians??)?? Beef samosas were nice and freshly fried so it was crunchy hot & delicious!! Note: placed the order at 4:15pm & said I'd be there 5:15pm to which lady said 'okay good I have an hour to prepare' then when I got there at 5:15pm she said to me 'oh I thought you said 5:50...' No biggie she made my dinner in 15 minutes while I shopped next door for something to drink. ;) Maybe I will say 5 1 5 next time... Pretty good portions for the price also. I will buy from this restaurant again!

Butter chicken wrap I took a bite out of haha

Lady who works here is the most amazing cook ever. She makes everything from scratch in front of you, and it's always consistently good. I would rank it as the best Indian food I have ever had, and the prices are decent too. I always grab the butter chicken wrap with pop deal when I'm in the area. Under $7 while being as delicious as hell is a 5 star to be sure. Be sure to try their paneer pakoras at least once, you will not regret it. After that you will never go back to mozerella sticks (lol).

Name changed to Indian Village Eatery. Balbir is the cook and WOW can she ever cook. Good food!

According to the menu on the window now, they've changed the name to Indian Village Eatery and they offer gluten free and vegan dishes. Not a lot of choices but I took a brown chick pea curry home and heated it up with some rice and now I'm addicted. They had better have this on the regular menu or I'll be jonesing for it! I'd recommend this place for take out only. It's not designed for dining in but don't let this stop you. The food is so good you won't notice any shortcomings! I asked the couple eating at the table how their meal was and they said; "This is the best Butter Chicken we've EVER had" -Damn! Wish I could digest dairy.

Menu part one, calling ahead helps everyone!

This place does great food. Its an understated looking place but the variety of lunch and dinner and cultures they always have something good. The woman who runs this place takes great pride in her food. So happy i found this place.

Revamped menu concentrating on just Indian dishes.

I tried the butter chicken wrap and my friend had the butter chicken entree. We shared three veggie samosas. Including tax, it was only $22, so that was the first positive thing for me. The menu has been completely revamped to focus just on Indian dishes, whereas the old menu had a bit of everything but nothing particularly special. The new menu with just Indian dishes is hands-down better. The butter chicken wrap with a drink is just $6.50 but the quality and amount of food fills me up as if it were a $13 dish somewhere else. SO GOOD. Veggie samosas with the homemade chutney is one of the best tasting items on the menu at 3 for $5. Definitely a hole in the wall worth visiting before a Giants' game or concert at Pacific Coliseum.

The butter chicken, comes with both rice and naan.

It looked like a small place from the outside but they cater to bigger groups as well - we were a group of 10 that went there on a Sunday night. The restaurant wasn't too crowded. Their food was incredible! I only got one of their cocktails - the mithai wala which came with rose petals and a vodka base. It was delicious, I would recommend! For food, we got their achari chicken from their tandoor menu. It was really good, we went for a medium spice level for it but I think we could have done hot. The flavours were really good and chicken was cooked very well! We also got their kathal tikka (which is basically jackfruit), it's so hard to find that in Vancouver but Hariyali did an incredible job! Everyone on the table were a big fan of it! Their menu is pretty big and we didn't get a lot of their items but I will definitely come back to try more things. It is also pretty affordable! Would recommend a visit!

Not the most amazing Indian food I've tasted, but overall fairly tasty. I prefer South Indian offerings, but... Had a lamb thali and my wife had a veg thali. Only two dishes on the thali plate, where I would normally expect a couple more. The vegetable salad was a definite weak point, as it was just a few scraps of inexplicably blanched peppers and cucumber. Ample servings of the mains though. Price point was a little higher than I would have thought for a lunch special.

Decor was very beautiful and ambience had exotic south Asian atomosphere. What we ordered: Dahi Puri- Stuffed crispy wheat puri shells, potato, roasted cumin, sweet cardamom yogurt Butter Chicken - Tandoor grilled chicken in tomato, cream, fenugreek, butter sauce Tandoori Naan Baingan Bharta - Tandoor roasted purple eggplant, mashed, finished with tomatoes & green peas North Indian Chicken Biryani (Gf) Tender pieces of chicken cooked with spiced basmati rice, infused with saffron, mint, and North Indian spices. Dahi Puri was great. As server's advised, it is better to have them immediately, otherwise shell texture would be soggy. It was perfectly crispy, yogurt filling was paired so well, one of the best item of the dinner. Butter chicken was very mild as requested. It had rich buttery flavor and delicious. Biryani was so delicious, too! Large chicken pieces were a nice surprise and flavor was very strong, it was very good to have rice with yogurt as server's advice. it balanced the spice. Naan was very decent, nicely chewy and soft texture. Baigan Bharta had very spicy and bold flavor. If you like spicy item, you will love this. Mashed eggplant and tomato combination was good. It was good to have it with Naan. Overall, It was a great experience. Overall I enjoyed the vibes at this place and would visit again for nice decor and excellent service. I would mention that the ladies bathroom was not up to par that day. The bathroom door was prompted wide open with a huge humidifier in front of the door. I am guessing it has to be kept running but the size of the appliance made the bathroom felt very cramped and definitely took away the privacy level. Hopefully the situation is rectified and doesn't take away the meal experience at Sula. I haven't been to other Sula locations but this is a convenient location on Commercial Drive with paid street parking available.

I made reservations for us for 4pm, so as to take advantage of their Happy Hour. We went earlier today (a Wednesday) and the place was empty at 4pm. I think it fills up later, for dinner. (I still advise making reservations as you never really know if it's going to be busy). Right off the bat, we were blown away by the interior. It is gorgeous! Small, but gorgeous. The murals, the chandeliers, the bar....and omg, the bathrooms. If you visit, you MUST check out the bathrooms. They have the most fabulous sinks I have ever seen. They didn't have a large selection of HH offerings, unfortunately, but what they did have was amazingly good. My friends who were extremely knowledgeable on Indian cuisine ordered for us, and we shared 3 different small plates (tandoori vegetable momos, cochin cauliflower bites, and some sort of delicious fried onions), and 2 desserts (soan paid malai khwaab, and foxtail millet pudding). And just...wow, everything was SO SO good. The three appetizers were so flavorful and the desserts, unlike anything I've ever had before and simply delicious. We also had drinks (but, of course!). One friend had a mango lassi which she loved, one friend had a high ball which she loved, and I had a mango mojito which I loved. (See a pattern? lol). All was great. Our server, Leesa (not sure of spelling) was so incredibly personable and lovely, and a gentleman I gather is the owner came by twice to make sure everything was okay. We felt like VIPs, with all the care and attention we got. Seriously, the folks here could not be nicer. I'm already planning on bringing my two daughters here. I know they'll love this place. Heck, anyone would love this place. My friends and I all plan on returning. Great great place!

We came around 4pm and had a couple of drinks from the regular menu plus the Kerala pepper chicken the momos and the veggie fritters. Again, the food is very good and the prices were reasonable. I will have to come back late night to see if the happy hour issue is rectified at that time as I see the menu is still the exact same as before. ********* Came here after hearing about the recent celebrity visit. First of all, the food is very good the portions are also decent and the prices are reasonable. I would have liked to have come back here for the lunch special as it's walking distance for me, but my visit left a bad taste in my mouth, which I will detail below. The dishes are inventive. There are the usual suspects, but also some that aren't often see at most Indian restaurants in Metro Van. The staff is also very attentive and friendly. The cocktails are pricey, but interesting. The decor is trendy. The bathrooms have an interesting sink feature that I have not seen before. If you're into social media, there's definitely some photo opportunities here. The service is a bit weird as there isn't really a dedicated server for the table. So, basically, we had all sorts of different people taking our drink and food orders, bringing us food, refilling our water and checking in on us. On the plus, it means that you are checked on a lot. On the minus, it is a bit inconsistent because there isn't one single person who knows what is going on with the table, but more a revolving door. For instance, one staff member came and took our drink order, however the wrong drink ended up being made and brought to me by the bartender, even though the drinks had been extensively discussed with the original server. So there's definitely communication issues. My biggest gripe with this restaurant is that we were denied ordering from the happy hour menu by the manager. I did not want to argue about it at the time as the bartender was told in front of us to deny us the happy hour menu, from which we wanted to order some cocktails. At this point, we had already ordered several menu items (in fact so many that the server had advised us we had more than enough food and that we did not need to order an additional dish we were considering) plus full priced cocktails. So it's not like they weren't making money off our table. The reason we were given, which I believe was told to the bartender (to be clear, I do not believe the bartender was at fault, but simply the messenger in this situation), was that the happy hour was only a summer thing. Again, we visually saw the manager instruct the bartender to tell us these things -- they were literally standing in front of our table, less than 5 feet away. This was not only unprofessional, but I found it incredibly dishonest. It was mid-December when we were at the restaurant, 3.5 months after summer had ended. The happy hour menu is literally the first page in the menu book. If a restaurant doesn't want to honour their own happy hour menu, it costs very little to simply reprint the happy hour menu, remove that page completely, or cross it out, if they really want to be cheap. At minimum, they should have honoured the menu for patrons that they gave it to and then rectified the situation for future. For this reason, I cannot recommend this establishment even though the food was very good and I would have otherwise come back and supported this small business.

The lamb curry combo not only consist of the Lamb but also a tandoori chicken drumstick, rice, garlic Naan, roasted potatoes, chana salad, and chutney.
