Tried a few more items. Buddy and I asked for spicy but the stuff seemed mild. The waitress gave us some chili powder, but it wasn't spicy either. Guessing the food is from a not so spicy part of India. The lamb and chicken curries were satisfying though. The one really disappointing thing though was the garlic naan. Not only were the smaller than most places, but I almost couldn't tell it was garlic. It seemed like plain naan with a bit of butter smudged on top. I would avoid this one. Slowly working our way through trying all the spots along Hastings. We settled on Indian Village Eatery, a small Pakistani spot. They're next door to the High Point Beer & Wine Shop. We dropped in on a Friday evening (around 8:00pm). The inside is cramped but there's three tables for dine in (total of 10 seats). Service is bare bones; when we went, the son was the only one waitering. Had to ask for extra plates, utensils, waters, etc. The menu is split into samosas, pakoras, wraps, biryani, meat (tandoori chicken, chicken, lamb, fish), vegetarian, flatbreads and desserts. They have lunch specials (12:00pm to 5:00pm) and all day specials. The bestseller sampler ($40.00) seemed very reasonable. All entrees come with a side (rice, naan or roti). They didn't ask for spice level so make sure to request that if you're a spice head. - Sides - we opted for two rices, two naans and a garlic naan ($0.50 extra). The garlic naan wasn't worth the upgrade; all you get is chunks of garlic inside. The naan itself reminded me more of paratha with a more denser, flat texture. - Mixed vegetable pakoras ($7.00) - oddly, this didn't come with the green chutney but still was our favourite dish of the night. Pakoras were perfectly deep fried yet still light and crunchy. - Eggplant bharta ($9.00 small) - we usually love anything eggplant but this was a touch mushy. - Aloo gobi ($9.00 small) - more potato than caulfilower. Flavours were mute and borderline bland. - Chicken vindaloo ($10.50 small) - chicken was small and scarce. Wasn't wowed by the sauce. - Fish curry ($14.50 large) - this was the best of the four entrees we ordered. Fish was tender and mix of vegetables balanced things out. Debit or cash only. Hidden place, even when you know where it is... easy to miss. Wraps offer an interesting option for quick lunch, although taste is too sweet, like really sweet. But fine. Pleasantly surprised by this place! We ordered take out: mutter paneer, butter chicken, aloo gobi and naan and rice. All of the dishes were quite good, it wasn't overly spicy but it had a good rounded flavour. When my partner picked up the order he noted that it was clear that everything was cooked from scratch which absolutely contributed to everything being very tasty. Based on the other reviews, it seems like this is a one person shop. The woman running the place was kind and hoped to get everything just right. Had some quick take out dinner here on a rainy Saturday night! Ordered: large butter chicken & large lamb curry (both with 2 sides rice & roti) & 3 beef samosas. Overall not bad...butter chicken was quite cinnamon-y...and lamb curry was a tad salty...neither dish was spicy...like maybe 1/10 spicy-ness maybe I had to ask for the chilli pepper or something (I like my Indian food ~ 7-8/10 spicy maybe she toned it down for Canadians??)?? Beef samosas were nice and freshly fried so it was crunchy hot & delicious!! Note: placed the order at 4:15pm & said I'd be there 5:15pm to which lady said 'okay good I have an hour to prepare' then when I got there at 5:15pm she said to me 'oh I thought you said 5:50...' No biggie she made my dinner in 15 minutes while I shopped next door for something to drink. ;) Maybe I will say 5 1 5 next time... Pretty good portions for the price also. Lady who works here is the most amazing cook ever. She makes everything from scratch in front of you, and it's always consistently good. I would rank it as the best Indian food I have ever had, and the prices are decent too. I always grab the butter chicken wrap with pop deal when I'm in the area. Under $7 while being as delicious as hell is a 5 star to be sure. Be sure to try their paneer pakoras at least once, you will not regret it. I'd recommend this place for take out only. It's not designed for dining in but don't let this stop you. The food is so good you won't notice any shortcomings! I tried the butter chicken wrap and my friend had the butter chicken entree. We shared three veggie samosas. Including tax, it was only $22, so that was the first positive thing for me. The menu has been completely revamped to focus just on Indian dishes, whereas the old menu had a bit of everything but nothing particularly special. The new menu with just Indian dishes is hands-down better. The butter chicken wrap with a drink is just $6.50 but the quality and amount of food fills me up as if it were a $13 dish somewhere else. SO GOOD. Veggie samosas with the homemade chutney is one of the best tasting items on the menu at 3 for $5. Definitely a hole in the wall worth visiting before a Giants' game or concert at Pacific Coliseum. read more

This is very much a hole in the wall type of place and it was just a mother and daughter cooking and taking orders when I was there. I returned to this place after a couple years of not eating here. The price is excellent but there are incongruities in the way they prepare their butter chicken. This is the one dish I expect a Punjab-style Indian kitchen to get right, but on opening the container, I was hit with a whiff of pumpkin pie smell. I don't think this is an issue of cheapness- rather just a clumsy over application of cinnamon and nutmeg. I'm not totally convinced either of these things should have much of a profile in what is essentially a cream and tomato curry, but it has an overwhelming effect and is not appetizing. This won't necessarily stop me from trying their other options in the future, but this is mainly in the hopes that they're better at more traditional curries- in which case I can forgive them for their treatment of British-hybrid bastard cuisine. I understand they're almost obligated to include butter chicken, but they might want to deemphasize it on their menu and pull focus to their other offerings. read more

What a excellent surprise. I was not expecting such amazing food. Their menu is all over the place, wraps, lasagna, curries. But don't let that deter you! We had the Butter Chicken and the Vegetable Sabji. The BC said it came with rice and naan, but it only came with rice. The Sabji came with two rotis so that made up for the lack of naan. The rotis were cooked fresh in front of us. I didn't eat the chicken, I only had the delicious sauce it lives in, and that sauce was divine. I will happily pay to just have that sauce. I think for those two meals it came to around $20ish with tip? And we had a lot of food for two people. We managed to eat it all, but it was so filling that my pal and I both skipped on our dessert which never happens. read more

Found this place by accident - was heading for a Vietnamese restaurant, saw this place when I got out of the truck decided to check it out. So glad I did! The food was awesome - I had the eggplant bhartha and it was amazing! Nice and spicy which is how (and why!) I love Indian food! The portion was huge - I had enough for my dinner the next night too! Went for it anyways and got a large order which included two sides (carbs) so get two pieces of Roti to dip it with. Was pleasantly surprised as it tasted how I expected it to taste. I did not notice any over powering Cinnamon spice. It was well balanced. It's a mom and pop joint so gramps takes the orders and grandma does the cooking. Pretty good Indian food. But I'm rating this more of a take out place than a sit in restaurant. If you want to eat in I would suggest somewhere else or only in the winter as it can get fairly hot inside. Moreover, I think you should treat this place more like a food court style place than an actual sit in restaurant with servers coming to your table. There's only the one lady there and it can be quite busy at times, so if you're going to eat in ask for the water yourself and don't expect her to have time to come to your table! Prices are decent and the lady there will try her best to help you, so just work with her since her English isn't the best ( no offence). Also, probably the most important: like most restaurants, chefs will prep their food and most of the food she preps is on the spicy side. So if you can't handle spicy I would suggest maybe somewhere else since she would have to make it fresh and that may take some time FYI! read more

Cheap and delicious. An Indian lady makes the food right as you order it (usually takes about 20-30mins if you're planning to get take out). We suggest you try: -butter chicken ($10 gets you a giant portion and you get to pick 2 sides!) -paneer pakora (for cheese lovers...it's literally delicious fried cheese) -side of yogurt ($2.50 for a "small" which is really like a medium) -veggies samosas (you can get 3 for $5!) The naan is amazing and so are all the chutneys. The only downside is that all your clothes will absorb all the smells of Indian spices even if you are zipping in and out to pick up your order. read more

It's not absolutely amazing, but if what you want is cheap and plentiful, this is a decent little hole-in-the-wall Indian takeout place. For under $20 we got a delicious Aloo Gobi (potato cauliflower) and a Butter Chicken, both with rice and naan. The butter chicken was a bit cinnamony or something - not the best I've had, but not bad. The naan was tasty, and the rice was more than enough. Enough of everything leftover for another serving. Just one woman taking orders and making food, but she was efficient. The menu is very limited - just "curry" with the meat you want. Don't expect a full menu of korma, vindaloo, etc etc. But worth trying if you live in the area and are hungry on a budget. read more

For only $7.30, I got a heaping amount of rice with a fair amount of butter chicken. As for the taste, it is quite cinnamony, and I couldn't finish it because of this, but I gave the leftovers to my sister and she loved it! This is is my go-to for butter chicken in Hastings-Sunrise. It's classified under "Indian Food" but actually has a mix of Southeast Asian dishes amongst American and Italian ones. They serve pasta, sandwiches, tandoori chicken, pakoras, fritters, samosas, etc. but the standout is the butter chicken. You can get it two ways: as an entree with rice and naan or as a naan wrap (butter chicken mixed with rice). The entree is big enough to feed two adults and costs only $10 and the wrap is plenty for one person--lunch or dinner--and usually comes with a can of soda for $7. What I love about East Village Eatery is that every time I've gone they're made my meal fresh, including the naan. If you go you'll see the lady owner pulling and stretching your naan before she cooks it, and each batch of butter chicken is also whipped up on the spot. I'm sure some ingredients are prepped beforehand but most everything is made-to-order so leave time for that, and the antiquated cash register. I've also tried the other Indian dishes and they're pretty decent too but the standout is definitely the butter chicken. Place is tiny with maybe eight seats at best so it's a better idea to take your food to go and eat it somewhere more comfortable, like Hastings Park if the weather's nice. read more

Ordered a small order of curry chicken with rice and it was actually a decent and filling sized portion. Had 4 pieces of chicken and more than enough sauce to go with the rice. Flavour was good. Samosas were okay. Decided to try the vegetarian version and it was mostly potatoes with a few peas. The lady behind the counter, who was running the whole place by herself, told me she ran out of chutney to go with the samosas when the order arrived to my table. The menu board explicitly states it comes with chutney. It would have been helpful if she mentioned that information when I placed my order as I was looking forward to the dipping sauce. Samosas was freshly fried and mildly spiced. It could use more variety of vegetables. Multiple customers stopped by and ordered the large order of butter chicken which comes with rice and naan when I was eating my food. You can see the lady making the naan to go with the order so at least you know it's really fresh. Reasonably priced food for the area as there are not many East Indian food options in this area. The safest bet is to order the East Indian food as the menu is all over the place (ie sandwiches) and the East Indian food seems to be the most popular. Phenomenal butter chicken! My husband and I were craving Indian and hadn't yet found our go to Indian place so we decided to give Indian Village a go. Mission accomplished! We wanted left overs and to try a lots of different dishes so we ordered lamb curry, butter chicken, a paneer dish as well as garlic naan, cauliflower pekoras and beef samosas. The portions were huge, prices amazingly cheap and we were super happy with everything. The butter chicken is definitely the big winner but none of the dishes disappointed. Lovely owner/chef greeted us when we arrived and we only had to wait a minutes for our order while we watched her making everything fresh. Highly recommend and will be back! read more

The people were nice enough but fumbling with the ordering/cash system and that took way too long. There were tables but it was way too hot in there-we got takeout and enjoyed the food in the park, eavesdropping on the One Republic concert. If you want real Indian food do not come here. I have now given them three tries and at all times, for various reasons, they have been a disappointment. On the first occasion, my wife and I had several guests and so we ordered a dozen chicken samosas. I brought them home only to find out they were all vegetarian samosas. The second time she said she'd give us 12 rotis for $x; when we brought them home, there were only 10. The third time, I ordered masala chicken i.e. curry chicken; it was absolutely horrible. I knew she cooked in a hurried manner by putting in cold pieces of tandoori chicken in some left over masala (curry sauce). The chicken was definitely not consistent with the masala and it was not too difficult to tell how it was cooked. Needless to say, there will be no fourth time. I think they rely on people who don't know how decent Indian food should taste. Every time I have called to complain she tells me an insincere 'sorry' and that she'll make it up next time.
