Newport Country Club is located in Newport which is just a subdivision of Crosby, Texas, about 30 miles Northeast of Downtown on Us Hwy 90. Its an 18 hole par 72 Championship Golf Course nestled in amongst thousands of pine trees and hundreds of homes. A truly beautiful, yet challenging course for the brave amateur or seasoned veteran. Green Fees run around 35 bucks with a half a cart. Hole 1: A short Par 4 with a wide fairway will give the golfer a chance to keep his driver in the bag and go for a long iron off the tee. Watch out for trees to the right and a large fairway bunker to the left. Both will easily ruin ones chance at a well earned birdie with such a sloping green for a finish. Hole 2: A medium sized Par 4 with a dogleg left, which is great for draw hitters. Pull out the Callaway and let her rip off this tee box. The fairway is wide open, but risk takers will try and cut the left corner of the dogleg. 2 bunkers guard the raised green with a slope going right to left. Hole 3: A very short Par 3 guarded by 3 bunkers that encompass the whole front side of the green. Pin placement is usually to the rear of the green, but don't over shoot. You will end up in a very deep gully that runs behind the hole. Hole 4:This hole is an uphill battle for a Par 4. It has a decent sized fairway, but alot of trees along the outer boundaries make this more difficult that first imagined. Stay to the left and you'll be fine. Hole 5: What a beast. This is a long 600 plus yard Par 5 that is very narrow off the tee box. Watch out for the fairway bunker to the right and bunkers surrounding the green. A birdie is very difficult to achieve here. Hole 6: Mid-length Par 3 with a raised green. Small pond to the rear of the hole, so aim short if you have to. OB runs along the right hand side. Bunkers guard the green from the front right and left sides. Hole 7: Bust out the driver once again for this long Par 5 that runs uphill for 70% of the hole. OB and trees run along the left hand side, and you will need a long iron after a good drive for a chance for an eagle. Hole 8: Possibly the easiest hole to birdie. A very short Par 4 with a wide open fairway. Flat green, with one large bunker on the rear side. Birdies galore here folks. Try and drive the green. Hole 9: The hardest hole on the course. A 450 yard Par 4 with a sharp dogleg to the left. Do not try and cut the corner--you will fail epically. Hit the drive too far, and you are in the water, too short and you have no possible way to make the green in regulation due to the dogleg. Very difficult to make par here. Hole 10: A double dogleg par 5 with a flat green sees alot of birdies. You're gonna have to cut the corner off the tee box to be in the prime spot to make the green in two. The green is level with the fairway, so a long iron is a good idea from your first shot. Hole 11: Another cookie cutter Par 4, large fairway bunker on the left and many tree to the right. Stay in the middle and you can easily make the green in two. Depending on wind conditions and how far you can hit the ball, you can drive the green. Hole 12: Another dogleg left Par 4, which can be brutal if you hit the bunker that sits right in the middle of the fairway in prime landing area off the first shot. Keep the driver in the bag and 4 iron it the whole way to the green and you got a well earned birdie shot. Hole 13: This is a very short Par 4, but the green is covered by trees. If you dare to cut the small dogleg right, beware of the Vietnam-style canopy. Best bet is to fade a 3 wood, and chip close to the green. Play it safe and you got a birdie here. Hole 14: Probably the easiest Par 3 on the course. A 7 iron placed onto a wide green should do the trick. Hole 15: This Par 5 has a sharp 90 degree dogleg right, which makes it fairly easy to make the cut. After that, its a 250 yard 3 wood that can land you on the green in 2. Alot of eagles and birdies here. Do not overdrive from the tee box. Hole 16: A very narrow, yet short Par 3 will force golfers to place their tee shots perfectly on a small green. You have woods that run parallel with the hole, so watch out with an errant tee shot. Hole 17: A short Par 4 with a deep bend to the left (I'm tired of saying dogleg) will allow drivers to let out a big drive on this hole. Of course it helps if you're a hooker like me. It's a golf term, not a profession folks. Beware of the bunker infested green area. It'll getcha! Hole 18: Mid-length Par 4 with water to the right, and an island green. Need I say anymore? This hole is a great way to finish a great round of golf in Crosby. Very challenging yet very rewarding. Enjoy!

We brought our kids for a fun evening of putt-putt, and simply trying to get someone to take our order seemed like a joke. We were casually told to order at the bar, even though we were just trying to get desserts and drinks for the kids. Eventually, a waiter was assigned to us, but even asking for straws seemed to bother him. Then he disappeared and never came back! The kids still had fun, and the atmosphere was enjoyable, but the service really took away from the experience. The place has a lot of potential--hopefully the customer service improves!

For example... you can't bring your own can of soda to the pool but they'd be happy to sell you the same can for $1.50. dumb. Kitchen has really gone downhill since we first joined. Thanksgiving brunch used to be awesome but now it's below average... same goes for Christmas and Easter. Wednesday dinners turned into pasta Wednesday... been the same thing for 2 years now... gettin' old (actually to the point where we don't go to that anymore). I've had multiple billing errors... If you are used to some of the finer golf courses in the Houston area, this might not be your ideal…read moreplace to play a round. That being said, the value cannot be matched - even from most municipal courses. A round plus cart is only going to cost you around $30 and that price is even lower on the week days and in the afternoon. One of the other pluses is that you will have no problem booking a tee time basically whenever you desire. Typically, there are only a handful of golfers at the course even on a Saturday. The negatives are that this is a very no frills golf course. Many times there are large patches of dirt in the fairways and when you do find grass - it is essentially of the quality you would find in your back yard. The greens are particularly slow. I'm not sure what type of grass they use, but it might just be the same used in the fairway cut shorter - very strange. I know that they have been restricted on the amount of water they used due to the drought conditions. That could be a contributing factor. Even with these negatives, I do like coming out here regularly. I can afford to play this course frequently and you will rarely have a group behind you "breathing down your neck" because the tee times are so close together.
