Who doesn't love a scenic view overlooking the bay?! It's a nice place to chill when the weather is nice. The view is especially gorgeous during sunset. If you're not much of a climber, no worries; there are stairs! However, it's a good idea to wear shoes with traction. read more

Came her with some friends to watch the sunset for the summer solstice. This place is a big rock you can climb up (there are steps as well) and have a beautiful view of the bay and San Francisco- it is really a great sunset watching spot. Clearly I wasn't the only one who had that idea- there was quite a crowd for the solstice. I would definitely recommend as a sunset spot or a fun place to take kids during the day. read more

Indian Rock Park - Sunset view - Parks Near Me - Berkeley, California

Perfect for picnics with an amazing view of the entire east bay and the GG. Good outdoor climbing in Berkeley. Indian rock is a rock formation surrounded by a small park in the middle of a quiet residential neighborhood. Many come for climbing. But there are steps carved on one side, so this is an ideal place for non-climbers as well. Parking can be a total bitch on nice days where it seems that everyone is trying to catch the perfect sunset. read more

Killer views. Most recent visit we arrived just as some community loving hippies had taken initiative to clean up the trash from the past evening, leaving the rock spotless! Thank you hippies! That said, this is a beautiful spot that I always pilgramage to when I get back to the Bay. Don't be lame and trash the place. read more

Loved the sunset views from here. Parking is a little difficult to find around this area though.

I went there twice and love it since then. Nice place to hang out when you want some solitude or even want to look at the sunrise or sunset!

I was lucky enough to come on a day with clear skies and see such a breathtaking view of the bay. From the side of the street before climbing up, I never would have expected to see such a beautiful view. Definitely recommend it as something to see while at Berkeley. read more

What a total rock climbing gem smack dab in the middle of Berkeley. Had a great time with lots of bouldering for me and Marco. All kinds of levels from V1 to expert. And locals are very nice too! read more

Hello, giant rock North berkeley has a sweet view?? I just found it here. Sunset is pretty I think the recent time change has made it even better, I found this to be a great place to take in the whole Bay. read more

Indian Rock Park is a well-known Berkeley favorite. It is particularly popular for its view of the sun setting over the San Francisco Bay. You haven't seen all of Berkeley if you haven't seen Indian Rock Park! Indian Rock is the largest of the rock outcroppings in the Berkeley Hills, situated along the west side of Indian Rock Avenue. It is composed of Northbrae rhyolite. On the east side of Indian Rock Avenue, you will find smaller rock outcroppings, a shaded grassy area, and a barbeque and picnic area. Indian Rock boasts a spectacular view of (from left to right) the UC Berkeley campus, downtown Oakland, the San Francisco Bay, the San Francisco skyline, and Marin County/Richmond. On the northern side of the rock face, there is a practice area for serious rock climbers and bouldering enthusiasts. For those less adventurous, there is a carved staircase on the more southern face of Indian Rock :) Indian Rock Path, an awesome pedestrian pathway, connects the park to Solano Avenue and The Alameda. TIP: There are plenty of lesser known rock parks scattered throughout the Berkeley Hills. If you're up for exploring more of these types of parks, check out Mortar Rock Park, Remillard Park, Great Stoneface Park, Contra Costa Rock Park, Grotto Rock Park, and the Cragmont Rock Park. read more

I remember happening upon this spot on pure accident and it definitely added to the magic of the experience. Giant rocks to climb + fantastic panorama views of the bay area... what's not to love? read more

Beautiful urban park in the middle of residential community of North Berkeley. The views are amazing and you're a few blocks away from amazing food and drinks on the iconic Solano avenue. read more

This is where I often find my piece of mind. I almost hesitant to write a review on this place because its so surreal considering, it may or may not be saturated by the likes of those who know of its existence or not. At times you may find me here among the suburban house side, hidden around these mountains, I climb to watch over the remains of the east bay and meditate about my home on planet earth. read more

This is a hidden gem in the heart of a residential neighborhood in North Berkeley. I can't believe I lived so close for 7 months without even knowing it was here! The top of Indian Rock has some of the best views from East Bay, and the steps leading up to the top of the rock are not too strenuous of a climb, even for me, a wimpy hiker. Next time, I'd bring a small picnic with me. it's a little crowded around sunset, but worth the effort! There is a nice walking path from Indian Rock Park that will take you behind houses, all the way down to shops on Solano. It's a great walking route. Dark at night, though! Probably bring a flashlight. read more

Back when I was a kid (10-12) in the early 70's visiting my dad in Berkeley, he'd take me to Indian Rock and we'd do the beginners rock, but him and his rock climbing buddies would do that steep face. Simply awesome watching them, and great memories. Have been there a few times as an adult since, doing the beginners rock was a little challenge. The views from a top are simply breathtaking. read more

Great view of the Bay Area and its an easy walk to get to. I've been here with friends and on dates and nothing beats it! I'd advise going here in the afternoon or near sunset because at night it gets crowded with couples. Its a little intimidating to walk on but its safe so don't worry even if you're scared of heights! But its definitely a romantic place to take a special someone after you've had lunch or dinner. Again just avoid coming here when its full of people! read more

I've been coming here since I was in high school. It's a great place to hang out and enjoy the breath-taking view, and especially romantic near the end of a date. Wear sensible shoes and bring a light if you're not familiar with walking up the side of the rock. read more

This huge rock brings me memories of my teen years where I was young and foolish. Well.. make that young and lot more foolishier then now. In my high school years, we used walk up here on weekend nights to get drunk + stoned. We would get so wasted, instead of walking back down, some of us (including moa) had to crawl down really slowly. I also remember hearing about a guy on LSD jumping off from the top of the rock thinking he was a bird only to land on his head. I heard he didn't make it. Now, I visit this place about twice a year and this place still brings major smiles to my face every time I visit. No, I don't need that green stuff to crack a smile at the top of the rock. I see folks practice rock climbing all the time. It's interesting to watch. You get a nice view of the bay after a super short easy climb to the top of this rock. If you look around there are more than one path to go up and back down to the top. It's the coolest rock I've ever met so far. I wish I had one just like this one in my backyard sometimes. Indian Rock... you still rock baby! read more

I've been going to Indian Rock for years and it never fails to amaze me. Even the drive to get there is awesome, as I love gazing at all the storybook homes in the Berkeley Hills. Indian Rock is so peaceful and unique. Really, this place is such a gem. I've taken so many people there and everyone has been blown away by the view and by the rock itself. Instead of driving, it's also totally worth walking around Solano Ave, which is really nice, and then taking the pedestrian only Indian Rock Path all the way up to Indian Rock. I love that Berkeley has all these hidden walkways connecting various neighborhoods. Solano + Indian Rock makes for a wonderful half-day. Another classic experience is getting some Cheeseboard and eating it on Indian Rock. Ah, memories. read more

Would 10/10 recommend, great view especially at sunset! Super easy walk to the top and there seemed to be plenty of nearby parking.

No parking, very dangerous climb and the view is just so-so. I'd strongly recommend you find another place to take in the view and leave Indian Rock to me. read more

Sweet little spot to go climbing. If you haven't climbed outdoors before, this is the perfect place to try it out. You can get pretty creative here with what you climb. The setting and view is fantastic up in the Berkeley hills. The crowds here are usually very minimal, at least all the times I've been here. People who climb here are usually really respectful of the area and others so there's no problem there. read more

great little park with a wonderful view on clear days! it's very small, so nothing I'd go too out of the way for, but if it's nearby it's a perfect place to lounge around and try a little climbing on the rocks :) read more

Really great place to take those instagram/hipster pics. Also a great place to eat cheeseboard

Beautiful part of Berkeley and a wonderful place to watch the sunset. There are some carved out stairs you can follow up and at top is a wonderful view of the bay. Bring a picnic, a bottle of wine and take a date. Or take some friends whatever the occasion this place rocks! No pun intended lol. I took my mom there last time and she loved it. People were rock climbing, hiking, and watching the view. It's also free and only street parking. Enjoy! read more

Thank you Caroline T. for introducing and inviting me to relax here over the weekend. After spending a good hour or two here, I am in LOVE with this place! It was relaxing and such an awesome place to chill and have a picnic. The view is awesome, especially as the day winds down and the sun is starting to go down :) Officially one of my favorite spots. read more

Sweet views of the bay. Love this place, it is truly my favorite place to unwind. Rocks can be a little slippery but mostly an easy climb. Parking can be a bit of a challenge but don't let that deter you. Check it out for yourself. read more

It's ok. I really don't understand how this came up under a search for hiking since it takes 60 seconds to "hike" all of it. Nice view of the bay bridge. Can't be here after 10. Can't smoke here. Have fun Berkeley, just not too much. read more

This place is so cool. It's kind of in a residential area so you gotta find parking without pissing off the neighbors. You climb to the top of this rock formation and there's steps carved into it so it's easy get up and down. You get such a good view of the bay from up here! You can bring lunch, drinks, an iPod or just a friend and hang out and enjoy the view. read more

A great outdoors spot in the urban landscape of city life. Lots of locals but now attracting its share of "visitors". Great place to catch some Bay Area fresh air and the climb is part of the journey. The views from the top are amazing - the San Francisco expanse at your feet - depending on the time of hike, the cool and the quiet can provide some introspection. Carpe diem #carpediem read more

Wide vista atop a large rock in the middle of residential Berkeley. It might be hard to get to your first time, but you will be so relieved to find it. It is pretty small on the front side, but when you climb up man-made steps, you reach the peak and you suddenly feel up in the clouds. On a clear day you can see the Berkeley campus, Oakland, the Bay Bridge, San Francisco, the Golden Gate Bridge and then Sausolito! ALL IN ONE PANORAMA! What a breath-taking view, both visually and physically, if you haven't been to thy gym lately! Keep steppin'! P.S. I think there is Internet access up there because I saw someone with an iBook up there. If you need some inspiration to write a research paper, I TOTALLY recommend Indian Rock. Berkeley's biggest little rock. -Matt read more

One of my fave places to just sit and escape for a bit. Street parking can be difficult to find since it is in a residential area. There are some steps there so that you can climb up the rock, so it isn't challenging at all. I always come equipped with a blanket to sit on and I just zone out while watching the sunset. Very chill spot for sure! read more

Great view, but not a ton of climbing. I was hoping for a bigger place. Great local spot! Really needs a bathroom installed!

Wow! What a great view! Definitely a place to bring my son along for some after-school bouldering, or occasional lecture :-).

Thanks to Yelp, my friend and I came up here to check it out. It's definitely not what I expected at first. There's definitely not much climbing to this. On one side of the rocks, there are steps that leads the way to the top and on the other side, I saw two gentleman rock climbing this one rock. It is easy to get up and there's only around 20 steps. At the top, it does have a lovely view of the whole bay area. I took the advice from fellow yelpers and had a picnic up there. Nice view. Will have to go back for their sunset. read more

I got some Zachary's pizza and took my date up to Indian Rock. Definitely had higher expectations for this place but would come back here again. Maybe because it was a cloudy day to watch the sunset. There were a lot of people on the rock; some high schoolers smoking ganja as well as some folks enjoying some beers. It was definitely a chill spot but the rock really is not that high up. You would be better off going up in the Oakland Hills to watch the sunset. read more

This is such a great park! Bring your climbing shoes because there is a lot of rock top climb over. This would be a perfect date spot. Bring some food and drinks and watch the sunset. Make sure to check this place out! read more

Great view! and in the morning not too many people. But on the weekends it can get kind of crowded. Especially around holidays.
