We had a gift card that needed to get spent so we went. It's easy to miss - nondescript store front on the east side of Delaware in Kenmore. It was practically empty with only one other party when we arrived. The server was attentive but a little awkward and nervous. The chef who brought out the food was personable and friendly. I have never had a bad meal from India Star. The owner is so pleasant and everything is so well done. Food is terrific, but pretty small portions. The servers seem to be the owners or the owners extended family, who are polite and helpful. The owners two small children are often walking around waving and smiling and are very cute. The only drawback to this hidden gem is the decor. Very shabby tables and chairs with red everything: curtains, table cloths, etc. And you are hit with that kind of musty smell from an old basement upon entering. not the most appetizing smell in my opinion. We decided to grab some Indian food on our way to airport from Niagara Falls and decided to ask yelp "best indian restaurant in Buffalo" and the search brought up India Star. Nice, clean and calm place. Overall the food was good but not too impressive. We ordered lamb curry and chicken basmati, and eggplant pakora as appetizer. Eggplant pakoras were 5 star. Very well cooked, not oil absorbed. The rice was OK, not bad but little mushy. Probably 3 stars. Lamb curry was really good. Lamb was properly cooked and soft to bite with no heavy smell. Was lacking some spice kick. So probably 4. Basmati was barely 3. All I can taste was tomato paste and some mushy rice Along with really large chunks of onions. For the food I would only give 3 stars, UT the cleanliness of the place, quick service, complimentary lentil soup and awesome mango lassi upgrades them to 4. But for sure, not the "best indian restaurant in Buffalo". Sorry yelp. read more

Food is fine - we like it. Here's the "But" My order was not complete, something I didn't notice until i got home. Bag was stapled shut so I didn't open while at the India Star premises. So I called to tell them I was short a Garlic Naan order. The person who answered the telephone wasn't sure what to do when I declined to drive back to pick up the ordered Naan. She went into the kitchen to speak to the owner. Upon return she said the owner was too busy to deal with it then but would call me later. I'm still waiting . . . a week later. So be sure to check your order before you leave, even if stapled shut. Update: I have been contacted by the business which apologized for the order error and offered a gift certificate as compensation. Fair enough! read more

My favorite Indian joint in town. Tuesday night buffet is highly recommended. There is surprisingly quite a number of choices in the Buffalo area. I've been to all of them at least once, but keep coming back to Star of India. Some of my favorites include the Chicken Makhani, Alu Gobi but the real star here is the Saag panner. i don't think I've ever had creamier spinach in my life. Truly delicious. Naan and garlic naan are both outstanding as well. I have been here multiple times and will continue to return. The food here is delicious (BEST garlic naan we have ever tasted!!) but what makes it fantastic is the service! We were the only people dining and the waitress/hostess made us feel very comfortable, even offering free lentil soup with our meal, and excellent advice about what to order! The food here is amazing! Tonight we split an order of butter chicken, which is not on the menu but made fresh for us and Chana masala. The meal started with delicious yellow lentil soup. Star of India is a small mom and pop restaurant. The biggest advance of such places is that there is a certain character in the food and a homely feeling in the service. This place is the real deal, the chicken and lamb taste amazing, but you can't leave this place without trying the vegetarian section. The service is fast, the prices are low and the ambiance is cool. I loved it and I would visit it again on a Tuesday with a gigantic appetite for there special Tuesday dinner buffet. read more

I wandered into this restaurant as I was in the neighborhood and tried out the buffet. I regret my decision. The only good thing was the freshly made Indian bread. The rest of the food was bland and tasteless. The tandoori chicken was poorly marinated and not well grilled. The tablecloth was not only stained but also not cleaned after a previous user. My girlfriend and I dine here regularly!! Food is always yummy, our favorites are the gobi pakora which, comes with both sweet and spicy chutneys, aloo gobi with rice, and garlic naan. so we decided to try an indian place late night and unfortunately stumbled into this establishment. there was one server who looked like he did not want to be there. after going through a grease covered menu we decided to order shrimp 'biryani' which was supposed to be made from basmati rice but apparently its just ordinary rice. the shrimp had a rotten smell and the whole thing was pretty much unedible and frankly dangerously bordering on food poisoning next up was paneer makhni, the sauce was probably made days ago and the paneer had a rubber like texture. most likely store bought and not fried before dumping into a sauce. we did not order any side of naan and it magically showed up on the table and the bill, we were glad it did because it was the only thing remotely edible Oh yeah if you dont tip them, they write their own tips so be extremely careful with credit cards. the whole experience was very unpleasant. read more

We were visiting niagara falls on a saturday and there is not even a single indian restaurant which serves A-la-carte for lunch which would satisfy a real indian palate. So we decided to drive 30 minutes to get good indian- 'indian' food. Parking was on street and there is a dunkin donuts shop's parking incase the street parking is full. I was told by the owner of the restaurant that i can park in donuts shop as well. Looked like a old restaurant and the lady took our orders seemed to be the owner of the place and was really nice to us. We ordered veg jalfrezey and malai kofta with rotis. Food was fresh and good. The complimentary rice was undercooked for us but that is okay as US folks dont like the mushy rice. We also got some curd by request. We were heading to philly so packed couple of veg biryanis for dinner. We requested that the biryani be packed tight. We reached home late at night and had it. Awesome biryani with perfect raitha. I also had requested some home made pickles to be packed, which was really good. Would visit again when driving to Niagara. read more

I've been going here for years, and I'm never disappointed. The buffet on Sunday is fantastic - good quality and consistent. I go every week for the most part and really like knowing what I can expect when I go. If I want something else, I'll order off the menu. The food is delicious and fresh. The chicken makhani is their best dish, in my opinion, and their chai is quite tasty as well - as good or better than some of the chai I got from stalls in India. The service is marvelously warm, friendly, and attentive. They are family owned, and their commitment to their family business is obvious. I've had Indian food many years ago and did not like it. Based on my first experience I thought I hated Indian food and Curry. Ten years later I give India Star a shot cuz they offer a buffet so I can try a variety of foods. To my pleasant surprise I enjoyed everything that they put out. I tried everything! I liked it all. They have dinner buffet on Tuesdays, which costs $10.95. I went for buffet. They have self serve chai tea, which I really liked. The food was little bit heavy, they must use lots of oil or butter. Especially, Naan bread was very buttery, which caused me stomach ache later. I am not sure if I want to go back to this place again. Maybe not buffet. read more
