I visited India House recently for a wedding, and it worked pretty well for this function.
The first floor ended up being a split of a reception area and room for the actual ceremony. The reception area got pretty crowded as more and more guests arrived; there were about 150 guests total. I think it would have been better if more people sat down (there was a good amount of seating in the bar area), but because most were standing, it got a little awkward trying to move around. The ceremony room was fairly standard, nothing unusual, though I would say the acoustics worked pretty well for the string quartet that was playing.
The second floor was used as a post-ceremony gathering and appetizers space, and was much more open than the first floor. Not only that, but it was easily dividable for different food stations (which I appreciated, as I was trying to find the non-meat station).
The third floor was the ballroom style area, and was fairly standard in that regards. It fit the tables and parties fine, and had an ample wooden floor section for dancing.
One thing I was a bit ambivalent on was the art adorning the walls of this building (mostly the first and second floors). I get that they were trying to put up art that aligned with the history of the building as a bank and its attachment to the idea of the "exotic" West Indies. However, I feel like they should have either had a lot more, to really pay homage to those cultures (and perhaps, in some small way, make up for their exploitation), or not had it at all.
All in all, though, it made for a decent wedding venue, especially if you're looking for something in Manhattan specifically. read more
