What a privilege it was to be invited to dinner at this fine private establishment. Along with putting on New York's Columbus Day parade, this Italian-American club celebrates Italian heritage as it raises significant money for scholarships for deserving students of Italian descent.
Upon entry, I was taken by the beautiful Christmas decorations at the entry and throughout the establishment. I was also thrilled with the fact that suit and ties are required for men, similar professional dress for ladies. I often lament the fact that many high-end establishments have abandoned a code of professional/formal dress in favor of allowing far too casual attire in some cases. Not here! Everybody looked good, and the proper dress certainly added to the ambience. "Looking good, Billy Ray!" "Feeling good, Louis!"
Everything about this experience was impeccable, from the door man through every member of staff who served our party. And the fare - oh, my goodness. The antipasti starters were fabulous, along with the softball-sized meatballs we shared as a table. Caprese is one of my favorite salads, and where best to enjoy this tomato, basil and mozzarella classic but a private Italian club? My main course was chicken on the bone served with Italian sausage, garlic cloves and an amazing vinegar-based sauce that had my tastebuds dancing a tarantella throughout the meal. Of course, the wine flowed and our meal was not rushed at all.
As I don't have a drop of Italian blood in me, I don't qualify for membership. But I feel so privileged to have been invited to visit for an evening. I told my host as we prepared to leave that this was one of the finest dining experiences I have had in a long, long time.
