We got our regular Biryani (which I used to love, I would go all the way to Richmond Hill from Elmhurst to get their Biryani), butter chicken, saag, and keema naan and every item was tasteless. Food is great, I order from here all the time! If your not a fan of spicy then let them know, but I feel it's still spicy. I'm sure they try. I'm a fan of spicy food however the hubby and kids not so much. We dine in once in awhile, it's not the best looking place, but the staff is very friendly. I really haven't felt this conflicted giving any establishment such a number of stars. I have been to India Cafe on 2 occasions and both the times I felt I had mixed feelings. Let me start by ambiance - definitely not date material. It looks drab from the outside and I really was hesitant the first time I saw the place but I went for it against my instincts. It got worse on the inside with dark colors and almost half the lights off at 1:30 on a Saturday afternoon (I guess they were trying to save energy, idk). The menus on the table were dirty and greasy and so were the glasses. Same experience both the times - minus the light part. The service is pretty decent. Servers are cordial but you do need to keep grabbing their attention without them making an effort to try and know what is needed by you. Speaking of food Pros - I tried the fish tikka and the tandoori catfish and both were phenomenal especially if accompanied with their green chutney. Most of their vegetarian dishes are pretty authentic - can't tell you anything about non-veg curries cause I haven't tried them yet. Dal Makhani is one of the must try dishes at the place. Cons - stay away from the chicken sheesh kebab, it's not one of their strong fortes especially for the price they charge. Taste of the kebab was pretty bland for something that is so simple and should be delicious. Naans are also not something that impressed me here. We had ordered onion kulcha, garlic naan, laccha paratha and regular naan but non of them lived up to the expectation. Even after requesting to make the food very spicy (we are Indians after all) the food still was not as spicy as should have been. Needless to say I will still go back to this place for their food cause I know they can do better and are better than most places when we speak of certain curries. Unassuming joint from the outside, but do not let appearances fool you. This place is positively delicious. I texted a friend that I am eating Happiness because the food is so delicious and choc full of flavor, it felt like reaching zen. I ordered the vegetable pakora appetizer and have more than enough left over to take home for later as their portions are so generous! I also ordered the Chicken Korma with plain naan. The flavors were rich, deep and sumptuous. The blend of spices and cream were divine. I have to say this is quite possibly one of the best Indian food restaurants I have tried, based on this small meal sample :) The people there are also very friendly! Easily overlooked but don't miss on this family run joint! I was there for a snack - samosas, tea, etc.. and all were great. However, overhearing others it made it clear the fish fry is the dish to order next time. Hospitality was great but I do hope more people start patronizing this restaurant as it was mostly empty while I was there. I have eaten here for years and LOVE the food. I usually order enough takeout that my family can eat for 4 days. That's how good the food is. However, as quite a few restaurants do when they are not cleaned, it has become horridly filthy. The door to the bathroom appears to NEVER have been cleaned. When we requested the new menus to take home, they couldn't find any new ones & gave us menus with lots of food samples on them. I had to think about it for a week because I love the food, the service is great, and the price is right, but eventually i had to realize that the kitchen is likely as dirty as the rest of the place. The owner of the restaurant was really nice and helped us order. The service was good as well. The location is nice and quiet. I'm starting my review in the middle of the meal. First of all, this establishment is very local and very modest. A few tables and booths are all there is. Not fancy in the least. I tried the vegetable samosa.. There were two large samosas with excellent flavor. Not greasy at all! The accompanying sauces- tamarind in particular- were spicy and robust. A salad with very little dressing was simple yet loaded with cumin and other chaat spices. For my entree I had chicken masala. This was one of the best indian dishes I've ever had. It was topped with julienned ginger and was spicy and packed with aromas that enticed. A definite winner. Dessert is to go as I'm stuffed. I will definitely revisit the India Cafe. read more

Price was fair to a great deal for the food. It's the same portions as those places that charge you about double. Service was good and clean as well. It was packed with lots of big groups but the service duties didn't suffer. Food was big in portions and the quality was pretty good. I always order a meat vindaloo dish and this time I can chew on chunks of ginger! Well that's pure i guess. Other Indian restaurants make us share a bowl of the rice if it's like two of us, but he gave us each our own rice as it should be by order. Water pitchers are absolutely bonus in my book because I'm a massive water drinker to keep the flow of my diet. Tandoori chicken also had lots of grilled onion pieces I munched on. I was too full to eat the one piece of naan we ordered later. Vegetable samosa was big, salty like a french fry but mashed with chunks like a meatloaf, minus the mean.
