The name apparently changed from India Cafe to International Cafe. It was indeed international, but also a really Georgia atmosphere, with customers casually chatting up the couple that run the place about local business and a central table filled with large families dining together. The spread of picked cabbage and figs with some bread and olive oil with vinegar did not strike me as Indian, but it definitely was different. They were strongly pickled vegetables but I went ahead and scarfed them down. While an option for a vegetarian thali was given, I went for the channa bhatura. My chickpeas with fried bread were freshly cooked, and this was a very large, soft bread. After finishing that I was offered dessert on the house, which I had no room for. An unsweetened chai washed things down. The restaurant is small and has very limited hours, and the family-run operation is not fast food, but it is distinctive food. read more

Best mango lassi. Or really best drink ever. Starting off with this really set the tone for the rest of the meal. This is a small little restaurant tucked into the back corner of an unassuming plaza. It seems family owned by a super friendly older couple. The husband does the waiting and the wife does the cooking. However, when it slows down the wife comes out to check up on how all the customers are doing and how they like the food. I think overall the food was great and the only thing I did not much care for was the piece of bread that came with the meal. It almost tasted like a shrimp cracker and the taste was slightly off putting. But everything else was delicious and I would definitely recommend coming here and trying the mango lassi. read more

A++ service! Lately, I've been reviewing restaurants based on how safe and seamless their takeout is during this pandemic. If they're being serious about safety now, that's where I want to be eating after the pandemic. I was able to order and pay over the phone. When I picked up my order, someone confirmed my name and order from a distance, then left my food on the table for me to pick up. No stress. No contact at all. Easy!! I was so pleased!! Also the food was jamming. I eat mostly vegetarian, and there were a wide variety of options to choose from. I ended up getting eggplant and chickpeas delicious! Not too spicy if you prefer your food milder. (I think I will ask for more spice next time). The vegetarian plate was $15, that included two veggie options and naan. The portions were big enough that I had plenty of left overs. Also, we didn't order dessert, but they gave us a complimentary brownie with our take out order. read more

Just gonna start off by saying I probably would have tried this place way earlier had it not been for the horrendous hours. It was never worth the trip across town to try it, although I kept hearing this was the best Indian in town. Some of the things we ordered were good, but overall, I can't agree with it being the best Indian in town. I ordered the lamb korma and while the flavoring was good, it just wasn't all that memorable. My husband liked the veggies that were served with his dish. I'm not sure I will be rushing back to try this, especially with the hours as is, but I'm glad I finally gave it a try. A friend of mine, just had India Cafe cater her birthday dinner party, talk about AHHHMAZING!!!! The menu included the salmon, curry shrimp, and Chicken Tikka Masala. Every dish prepared was delicious. I have not one complaint. In lieu of birthday cake my friend decided to serve the Bread Pudding for dessert, and we all could not stop eating it. Hands down best Indian food I've ever had. So fresh, so delicious. This restaurant is like eating at your bff's house where her mom makes everything from scratch. I started with veggie samosas with cilantro chutney. I had the warmed apple cider which warmed me right up, since we're in the middle of a cold snap. I had the chicken chili special. The rice had the best flavors in it, I just loved it. The chicken was a nice hot spice. It just warmed my soul. I asked for a piece of naan and it was made to order. Excellent naan, best I've ever had. I could have stayed there all night chatting with the owners! Just lovely people. I ended with the not to miss warm homemade brownie with ice cream. This place is AWESOME! The story is an interesting one: The owners are a husband and wife couple, the husband is supporting his wife's dream of opening a restaurant. Great story, no? The one downside, this place is not open ALL the time. I say that with a bit of sarcasm, this place is great, and it's so great that I wish it were open whenever I happen to want some delicious Indian food. That being said, it's only the husband and wife, so they are open sort of, on their schedule. Now to the good parts: The atmosphere is great, there is some bollywood music videos playing in the corner, but not all that loudly, so it wasn't disruptive in any way. The walls are decorated with nice family pictures and such, very comfortable, very warm and almost cozy. The menu was great, there were options for south Indian as well as north. The appetizers were great, featuring the classics and well as some chef-inspired creations. The service wasn't as slow as I was expecting. Was as fast as, say, Applebees? No. But it was more than acceptable. And he was very friendly!! And the food. My god! The food! Delicious all around. It's clear the chef has a passion for cooking. Fantastic food! This place is so different from most other Indian restaurants (not only in Augusta, but even Atlanta/Columbia/Charlotte). Don't go here looking for standard butter chicken/saag paneer/chicken tikka masala. Instead, you get fish and shrimp dishes, spicy lamb vindaloos, tasty wraps, and fresh dosas. Moreover, I'm not dumb enough to think that it's the most healthy stuff for you, but the chef finds a way to add complex flavor using spices rather than relying on the butter/ghee/cream/oil that is such a crutch at most Indian places. It's definitely a little pricier than your Chinese takeout, but the quality more than makes up for it. More than that, it's run solely by a husband/wife duo so you feel like you are eating in their home rather than at a restaurant. However where the service lacks it makes up for it in knowing your in direct communication with the kitchen. The husband of the dynamic duo, is in fact a physician helping his wife achieve her dreams. How great is that? On to the food. I have eaten at every indian establishment in South Carolina and this one is right up there. What set it appart from the mexican staffed kitchens of the several of the others i have been to, is the love that comes through your taste buds. You can just tell with the subtleness of spice and such that this is not food prepared by a parrot in the kitchen that was showed how to make something. This food, albeit Indian, screams homemade. I've been here twice and have left so happy both times. The food is amazing. I got the vegetarian special of the night and my husband got a chicken dish. The owners are really kind and the people who go there seem to be regulars who are very friendly. One of the other customers ordered a dosa with a potato filling. I asked what it was and they let me try some. I will defiantly be getting it next time, so good! People complain about the long waits there, but i think it depends on if you go during the week or on a weekend. We went on a Tuesday around 6pm and were seated right away and our food came in 20 minutes or less. For drinks, I had a chai tea and it was a 1000x better than the watery crap you get at a Starbucks. read more

The menu is short and simple; I wanted one of everything from the descriptions and the way our fellow diners' food smelled. Although it took a little while to come take our order, the food was brought out very quickly after ordering. We got some chicken curry, a lamb dish, garlic naan, and a mango shake and everything was great. More food than two people can eat. At the end of the dinner, our server brought out a warm brownie topped with ice cream. The reason I give 4 instead of 5 stars is that it is pricy. Totally worth a visit, but not the kind of place I could make a weekly habit out of. Okay. First tip. This place is run by two people so you HAVE to be aware of that before going here. Also, do not come here if you are already hungry or at the very least bring a snack as it can take a very long time to get your food. The menu is minimal with not a lot to choose from. However, the food is VERY good. The best pakora I've eaten to date! The atmosphere is unique and corky. The have bollywood videos playing from tons of my favorite moves which was fun to watch while you wait. The cons? Not enough water. And you REALLY need water when you eat indian food. Also, no air conditioning. It made it kinda uncomfortable but funny at the same time. I don't know. This place is unique. You can't come here thinking it's gonna be like a regular staffed restaurant. What a hidden gem for Indian food here in Augusta! Tucked back off of Washington Rd in a shopping center that you barely even can tell is back behind the Fridays (or Applebees, whatever they're all the same), this restaurant is apparently run by a husband and wife team who do the cooking and serving. This is authentic and delicious! The serving sizes are huge; we had leftovers for 2 meals each! Both the food and the service are better than Bombay Central or Taj. India Cafe is run by an Indian couple who make you feel like your eating in their own home. I requested for them bring on the hot spices because I love my spicy food and it was PERFECT! Hot, but in a flavorful way, not over powering. My boyfriend got the vegetable plate. Everything was fresh and exquisitely spiced. They give you so much food that it covered our lunch the next day and prices are VERY reasonable. First time in Augusta, GA- and decided on Indian! Very quaint restaurant with amazing food. MUST TRY!!!!! First Ordered the hummus/eggplant dip. Husband's favorite! Smooth and flavorful dip served with warm naan. Then had the lamb samosa. OMG! Flakey crust filled with lamb and potato filling. Definitely my favorite! This was served with a cilantro chutney! My husband licked the small bowl of cilantro chutney cleaned. Lastly we shared the mango chkn as our entree. By far a very moist chkn breast! A large portion too! The dish is spicy, tangy, and sweet! I had just finished getting my nails done late in the evening and I had a huge hankering for some Indian food. Normally I cook it at home as being a NY'er and traveler its been hard finding international food locally. But I did a quick yelp search and India cafe popped up. I wasn't far from it so I said what the heck let's give it a whirl. Well never again. I had decent expectations after checking out the yelp reviews to only be let down. I ordered the samosas, chicken tikka masala and nan. The samosas were tasty everything else could have been a frozen meal. The nan was so greasy I could barely eat it. Now here is the catch a gentleman came in and ordered about 10-15 minutes after I did, the same thing chicken tikka masala...I could hear him because it was just the two of use there and it's a small place. However the owner brought the young man's food before mine as I had to wait about 10 more minutes to get mine. That took the sock off the foot and I will never step foot in there again. They are all a little different but this is Southern Indian cooking- from Southern India, not because they are in GA :-) Portions are generous and your meal comes with your own bowl of Raita. Mary loves to make desserts so save room if possible! If service is ever slow it's because Mary is in the kitchen alone, smiling and cooking your meal personally. So be patient- it's worth the wait! The salmon dish is my favorite! The decor is very simple with large family photos around the walls. We love the ambience of the Bollywood videos playing on the TV in the background. The food has a homely taste but is very delicious! The owners are kind and friendly and service is pretty fast. I had gone to the plaza several times before I actually saw the place open. But when I went in, it was pretty packed. Seemed like all regulars, as everyone chit-chatted with the owner. There was no server but he was able to handle everything as the place was not too big. Probably has a maximum occupancy of 30 or so. The decoration was a bit too overwhelming, as it seemed crammed with different things. There is a swing door between the kitchen and the dining hall, and the chef popped in to talk with some of the customers. The environment was quite friendly. India Cafe is my favorite restaurant in Augusta and I just love it. As the other reviews state, the food is authentic, reasonably priced, and most importantly -- absolutely delicious. Yes, you will wait awhile for your food (only two people running the restaurant) but it is SO worth the wait !! Just know that going in. My other trick is to show up at 5:30 (when they open) before they get busy. Also, sometimes I'll call for takeout and allow an hour and that works pretty well too. The other thing I have to say is that over the years of eating here, I have gotten to know the owners who are wonderful people and who have gone out of their way to make me feel welcome. They greet me by name and it feels so good to eat at their place. You do feel part of the family in a way ! I have brought many friends and family to India Cafe over the years, and have never been disappointed. If you are looking for a chain restaurant experience, you won't find it here, and I say thank goodness. India Cafe is quirky, unique and wonderful. The food is delicious and eating there (for us) is like a visit to a friendly corner of India, right here in Augusta. Highly, highly recommended! read more

Four of us went for Indian food last night. Each had something different. It was all fantastic. This was the second time we had been there (we do not live nearby). The other couple goes there probably once/month, it is that good. If you want real Indian food, not some Americanized version, you must go to this restaurant. You will not find any better. I had the chicken curry, and I only wish I had ordered a triple quantity so I could have taken some home. We all shared the hummus, not a traditional preparation but I could have licked the bowl it came in. India Cafe can best be described as, like its namesake, dichotomous. One must balance delicious truly homemade food with what can best be stated as the most amateur restaurant I've ever eaten in. It is run by a husband and wife team, with the husband functioning as the waiter/host/busboy/cashier. Rumor has it that he bought the restaurant for his wife because she always wanted to have a restaurant, but for whatever reason never went down the standard chef's route of learning to cook things other than Indian food and getting yelled at by belligerent drunks in chefhats. The husband is an esteemed physician at the Medical College, who is grossly over-educated for his waitering job, and it shows. Meaning, don't expect a water refill, to be seated in any orderly fashion, to put in your order within 15 minutes of being seated, et al. It is really hit-or-miss with this place, you can show up (during its limited and odd hours of operation) and not get a seat for 45 minutes (despite there being open tables), or you may get seated immediately. It's truly enigmatic, and understaffed, in that way. But what is certain is that you will get some seriously tasty food. I have never not had what Faulkner wish he had described as a Taste-o-gasm upon sinking my teeth into perfectly spiced tika masaala. The chef will come out and greet you during your meal, and she is simply a doll. She will often give you freebie tasters of whatever Subcontinent concoction she has served up in the kitchen. Everything on the menu is worth trying, just don't get your panties in a wad if the service isn't to your idiosyncratic liking, because like the ancient Hindu proverb (fabricated entirely by me) states: "He who scales the mountain, dines with the elephant."
