Food is good. The location is tucked in a strip mall next to a drugstore. It's got a huge pillar blocking the front of the store so you can barely see it except for the sign. Windows are all covered with signage of menus and specials so do not expect a lot of sunlight in this restaurant. I got the paper dosa which is measured at 2.5 ft. It's essentially a south indian style crepe with potato masala, coconut chutney and a soup on the side. For $9.99 this is a great deal and easily shareable with friends and family. I would say the cook time is a bit slow, just for a simple paper dosa took 20 minutes to make when the restaurant was completely empty so just be aware of that. Lots of free parking. The staff could definitely be happier/more enthusiastic. I've been here three times and they do not seem that helpful navigating the massive indian food menu. read more

So good. I just moved away from Richfield but never knew about this place! It's southern Indian which is rare but don't worry, I still got chicken tikka masala as a lame American and it was delicious! Garlic naan was perfect and I will be back. This food is pretty good - portion sizes of entrees are good and you get 2 big pieces of nan bread per nan order which is better than some other Indian places. Malai kofta only has 2 pieces of it in the sauce which is kind of low, and butter chicken is a yellow sauce with jalepano pieces, both decent. read more

Ok, this place is so amazingly delicious that it took me a very long time to come write a review simply because I am afraid it will become popular and no longer be free of waits. For starters, it's a family busy and they are extremely nice people. Then comes the food. I have tried more than half of the menu, and my recommendations are: lentil soup for appetizer; masala dosa and the sambar are honestly the best in town; butter chicken and chicken tikka masala; and of course plain naan bread. Before coming here I thought the chicken tikka masala at Ghandi Mahal was the best in town, but this is way better!!!!!!! What a pleasant surprise! When you walk into this place it seems a little underwhelming, its small (maybe 10 tables) and there are two buffet stations about four feet long but wow! does the food pack a punch. Tons of flavor in all items that i tried and some dishes were even pretty spicy, which i can never get enough of. The chicken curry was super tender and the meat was falling right off the bone. The masala was perfectly creamy. I also loved the chicken soup, which cleared my sinus' it was so zesty! The employees were polite and brought fresh naan to the table which was nice. I love a good dive. I am not one to judge a place with great food based on lack of atmosphere, in general. BUT India Cafe could put in just the bare minimum of effort to lift itself out of the absolute depths on all fronts other than food. It's a serious problem that really can't be overlooked, and I am not talking about structural things like location. There was only 1 person working there who could help us and he ostentatiously went on break and we were barely able to check out. That said, the food is extraordinary. The dosa is sublime. We had the very spicy Mysore Dosa and then a more basic potato and onion dosa, both lick-the-plate delicious. The Chana potato curry was delectable and the butter chicken transcendent. Even the naan was amazing. So yeah. Go, but be ready for some pain. read more

I must say, this is probably the best tandoori chicken I've had, mostly because it was charred to perfection with minmal fat. The naan was served hot (as it should), and the buffet is $7.95. I think this is more of a place that I would go to for a quick fix, because the raita and the basmati rice are behind the lunch counter; it's just more convenient to have it out to serve yourself. Weekday lunch: $7.50 for buffet+tax - excellent price. The selection was not as varied as it is at $10-11 places but all the main staples are there. The food is tasty, spicy, fresh, constantly refilled. Tandoori chicken is very tender and flavorful - absolutely marvelous! There are multiple rice dishes - rice with vegetables, lemon rice, and rice with goat meat - all are delicious. There are a few vegetarian selections, so for those who are trying to avoid meat - you'll have plenty of choices. The sign outside claims that they only use halal meat. I can definitely say that the chicken and goat are better than most Indian places I've been to. The water is filtered - big plus. The people were polite and prompt. I will certainly go back for more. This is a "hole in the wall" caliber of restaurant and so I SMH at some of the other negative reviews. You are really going to critique price, quality of service, ambience etc? Seriously folks, this is a mom & pop hole in the wall establishment. They have decent food : buffets during lunch hour which has a good selection and their dinner menu is also pretty good and fairly priced. This is not your place for date night. This is where you come to get your authentic curry fix - period! I believe the folks running the place are from Pakistan and so I recommend their meat dishes and Biryani is pretty spot on. read more

Okay. So the ambiance isn't the greatest. It's dark, quiet (except for super loud phone conversations the owner is having every few minutes) and there isn't much going for it décor wise. We can get past that. Hubster and I came here for South Indian food on a Sunday afternoon as I had a serious sambar vada craving, and he was hankering for a rava dosa. They seemed surprised we were dining in (again, ambiance is NOT their focus, so most people must take out - as noted in previous reviews), and were just wrapping up the buffet, so we were the only 2 in there during our 10 minute wait. We ordered a sambar vada to share, and I got an onion dosa, while my husband got the masala rava dosa. The sambar was legit - chunky with vegetables, tart, and with a burn that came on slowly and by 10 spoons in had us blowing our noses. Awesomeness. Our dosas came out and were a good size, though my husband's was light on the masala filling. I couldn't try his (gluten situation), but he said it was really good. My regular dosa was delicious - I could tell they really fermented the batter...it had this super crisp sourdoughish flavor to it, and was a perfect dipped in the sambar. The coconut chutney that came with wasn't the best I've had, but it was definitely workable. I didn't eat much of it - but then, I'm REALLY picky about coconut chutney. Based on coming back for not-buffet. Which is a good idea. We picked up. PROTIP: Buffet is decent, but really, buffets are never THAT good. Cheap ass MN: You come here, you get Mysore Dosa, you will know what I mean. It's not even breaking 10 bucks to get that and it'll fill you up. Really. You pour the three things in containers over the giant crepe, (lentil-based sambar is like the veggie au jus for this thing, add coconut chutney and red stuff as well) you eat it with a fork or your fingers, (because you got takeout and you are now enjoying it in front of a youtube cat video or whatever floats your viewing boat) boom, AMAZING. If you want to do it "right" then tear bits of your dosa delicately and dip each one, but I'm not that stylish and I like a LOT of sambar. Hot n Spicy, vegetarian, possibly even vegan (?) and you're completely content and stuffed, thinking Karnataka and Kerala might go onto the travel bucket list as you step away from the buffet bucket for the WIN. As to CTM, oh, sesame chicken of Indian food, we ordered it, (because my mate is learning slowly, but learning) and lo and behold, it was good. Creamy and decadent and pointlessly caloric and better than most of the rest in town. So if you have to go that route, you could do worse. People running this place are nice and customer-minded. Also: Uttapam! They haz! Gulab Jamun - actually WORTH it for a change. Only this place and Taste of India, oddly, have Gulab Jamun that are better than sweet-shop good. There is a reason this place is attractive to young professional Desis on a random weeknight and it is NOT the atmosphere, as is established. It's the food, yo. Sambar is a but bland but coconut chutney is excellent and tomato chutney good; total effect quite adequate if not quite silicon valley quality. Try the tomato/peas uthappam for variety. Indian tea is fine; alas no South Indian filter coffee. Friendly staff and Indian family clientele. Great place for pre or post flight snacking ... Much more satisfying than airport food. read more

I did take out from the India Cafe last night and all said and done I have some mixed thoughts. I ordered the paneer pakoda appetizer and the lamb phaal entree. On the plus side the food was very delicious and perfectly spiced. On the negative side I was a bit perturbed that I found only 9 small chunks of lamb (yes, I counted!) in a pint of sauce. In addition, rice did not come with my entree; I had to order it separately. Would I go back? Maybe but probably not. read more

My first night in Minneapolis and I was craving some butter chicken. So using my handy dandy yelp app on my Iphone, it pointed my to India Cafe. The food was ok at best. The only thing that was off the chart was the tandoori chicken. I ordered 2 orders of Naan and it only came out to be 2 half moons. Allo Bonda (allo tiki) was a definitely hand made however was a bit chunky and was lacking on any flavor. Just a bit of salt would've made it better. The Butter Chicken good but nothing extraordinary. The service was nothing spectacular. The dining are was very basic and provided not ambiance. Honeslty it was good but with Kabob's (next review)in the same strip mall it's hard to see how this place is in business. read more

So I downloaded this app called Eat24 that lets you order food from your phone. India Cafe was the closest restaurant available with the app so I decided to give them a try for lunch. I order Chicken Biryani and Vegetable Samosas - two pretty safe choices for a place I've never tried (I usually go to Bukhara Indian Bistro for my Indian fix). The chicken was different than what I've had at other places. Other indian places generally have cut-up breast meat chunks mixed in with the rice. India Cafe served it with a bed of rice and two chicken drumsticks on top. The drumsticks were broken in half in the middle to give 4 chunks of bone-in chicken. Different than I was used to, and not a lot of chicken compared to other places. It was seasoned quite nicely though and was very flavorful. The rice was also quite good and nicely spicy. The Samosas were quite large and very, very salty on the outside. So salty I had trouble eating them even after trying to brush them off with a napkin. Took a star off my rating for that. I'll try them again. They have a lunch buffet and that will give me a chance to sample more of their dishes. read more

Whilst waiting I have decided to write the review. After ordering on EAT app and trying to call I went to get food after 25 mins. I am now at 1hour and no food. I stopped coming here 3 years ago because of a bad experience. I will now avoid and recommend to all people I know to avoid this place. I observed in this hour poor hygiene practices - not washing of hands as staff arrived for work and coughing over food. I also saw 4 ribs of food sit on counter for 35 mins then put into a bag for a take out order - no doubt very cold now. Bit good avoid. read more

I've had Indian in 5 different countries, including India. I've never before had consistently good food like at this one. Their lunch buffet was not equally exciting, it was poor. But I became a regular and the dishes they serve at dinner are always excellent. I am now exploring their long catalog for things I haven't had before since I trust I will be pleased with each one. The decoration is minimal, lighting low and uninteresting, but I have come to appreciate a setup like that more than the loud ethnic decoration I see in chains or 'big production' Indian restaurants, because usually I find better food in simple places. Spices are real (if you want them) as opposed to 'americanized'. I recommend to anyone for dinner. read more

This is a restaurant serving Indian food made by Indians for Indians. That is also the definition of authentic Indian food! There is nothing pretentious or fancy about this restaurant. Small portions at a big price. I didn't get to see an itemized receipt, but I'm pretty sure they up-charged me like a previous reviewer. It wasn't until I paid that I noticed the sign saying "prices subject to change without notice, register price is final." The chicken here was less tender than other places in town.
