Pickleball courts (located in Court #5, they are lines ontop of a tennis court) are able to be played at but note you need to bring your own portable net!! Unfortunately many who came to play like us just adjusted and played with the tennis nets on the courts. It would be nice if a portable pickleball net was kept here like other parks, but it seems priority is for tennis here (amounting to around 8 tennis courts total here). Needless to say, I like the maintenance at the park here. There were also gated courts for concrete soccer, which was interesting. Lots of gnats flying around the area, but could be due to local weather. tl,dr: had an awesome pickleball adventure here on Memorial Day. Likes: + From what I heard from the locals, the pickleball courts here are open-play most or all the time. + Nice park, lots of open space. + Lots of friendly, welcoming people here. Gripes: - Need a few more picnic tables. Some of us were sitting on the ground. Neutral: . Out of its 8 tennis courts, one has 4 sets of pickleball court lines permanently drawn on. There aren't any pickleball nets permanently installed here. You have to bring your own portable net. Story: I was visiting from out of town on Memorial Day 2024. Found a family of young adults and teens playing on these pickleball courts. Asked them if this was open play (meaning the courts aren't reserved). The cool locals were very friendly and welcomed me on. They let me play with them all day. Then we took a break and they were so nice to share some food with me. Then we had an exciting tournament. I admired their initiative, leadership, and open-mindedness. Eventually the day ended and we went separate ways. They were so kind to me. I hope I was a good guest to them. I forgot to ask to keep in touch. This was a rare occasion, so who knows when we'll meet again. I live for adventure, so I sure loved making these memories. Hope they're doing well and get better at pickleball, and that I get to play with them again someday. read more

The experience while visiting this park was a very pleasant one. The park was nicely kept.

Compared to 10-15 years ago, Independence Park looks like a completely different place! I used to play tennis here all the time when I was in high school & in community college. The fences looked old and rusty, the windbreakers were breaking, and there was SO many cracks on the surfaces of the tennis courts. The courts also used to be a burgundy color too (not a bad thing, just pointing it out). Do the courts still have cracks? Sure. However, it's something I'm willing to overlook because these courts are really nice for ones that are located in a public park. The nets look look either new or are in really good condition. At night, the lights are bright enough so that you can actually see the ball properly. Although, I will say they've been taking a long time to fix the lights that aren't working on courts 3, 4, & 7. As someone with an astigmatism, playing in such dim lighting makes my tennis experience a lot less enjoyable. Also, court 8 pickle ball courts on it now as well. There are a lot of people that usually play here during the evenings, and I think it's really unfortunate that the city decided to effectively take away a tennis court when they're already in short supply. I doubt the city is going to read this review, but I really implore them to just build a separate set of pickle ball courts. Other than tennis, there are also 2 futsal courts now as well. They always remain locked unless the city is holding games or practice sessions. You can also ask the park employees to open them up for you as well if you and/or your family want to use them. The baseball/softball fields are really well maintained, and the children's playground area looks really taken care of these days. There's also a nice and clean outhouse by the baseball/softball fields as well. Although, they tend to only open them during their playing season. Parking can get a bit rough during the evenings. This is because of a combination of people coming to the skating area, tennis courts, futsal areas, and for baseball/softball games/practice. However, it's important to note that there's more parking on the North East side of the park. If you come around 5:00 PM - 7:00 PM, be prepared to spend a few minutes finding parking. If you're a tennis player, the courts are most busy on weekday evenings and weekend mornings. Try to plan around that or otherwise make online reservations. read more

Whenever my dad comes into town there's always certain things that he likes to do . One of them is definitely going to the sk8 park. When you have lots of brothers skateboarding just becomes a part of life . He was so disappointed that nobody was there. He just didn't understand where all the sk8ers were. I said Dad they're in school ! He just couldn't believe that only kids skated. He said do you mean to tell me that after they're out of school they stop skating. I said mostly . He kept throwing back all the phrases that we've used throughout the years . I thought it was Sk8 or die!! Sidewalk surfing forever! Sk8ers are renegades for life! I was so proud of him at that moment. My dad so cool! we usually sit there and just watch the skaters as we catch up. What do you know as life would have it . A really nice car pulled up in a man in his 40s came out jumped on his board and got his SK8 on . Restored faith in both of us. See sk8 or die! LoL . It was so nice to see a man with a nice car ,nice clothes and a nice pair of headphones still carved out time for an early morning session. Now that's what I wanna see! For the playground : It's a modest and small park. One little tower for 2-5 year olds... A bigger tower for the little older kids. In the afternoon there is a big tree that provides cool shade over the side of the park closest to the bathrooms. I do appreciate that it is also enclosed so you can ensure who is coming in or out.... Whether your own or someone else. There is also a set of swings and a monkey bar climbing set. I thought it was sweet that they have one adaptive swing chair for handicap patrons... The regular swings however are so high! I could barely climb into them! Not one to go out of your way for but it's a cute little place to just hide away from if for example you are at the hospital across the street for an extended period of time and need to get away. read more

INDEPENDENCE PARK: A Refuge Among Hustle and Bustle Many days at work, I feel so cooped up in my office that I need to get outside for lunch and get some sun. Only having half an hour for lunch everyday doesn't leave me with many options in Downey. Independence Park is my lunch refuge. Tucked away among the blocky commercial and industrial buildings of Downey, Independence Park provides a perfect place to de-stress at lunch time. At lunch, there is very few people there, but enough people to entertain me at lunch. For example, there's... 1.) A nice playground for kids in the back of the park. 2.) A yUUUUGE field to play football and soccer. 3.) A baseball diamond for little league. 4.) A nice picnic bench area with BBQ pits. 5.) Tennis courts galore 6.) Nice hilly grass/tree areas providing nice shade. 7.) Last but not least, an impressive skate park. In comparison with the surrounding area, the park is very well maintained and well-supervised. The park seems very safe as I see the po po come and check up on the place quite frequently. For a lunchtime refuge, I give it 4.5 stars. Unfortunately, it loses .5 stars because of some of the graffiti left by people. But I can't blame the park for that. People leave more marks here than dogs and their bizZn3ss. read more

Small, compact neighborhood park. I enjoy walking around this park and the neighborhood - just to get away from the desk. Lovely, huge shade trees line the walking path and provide great coolness from the day time heat (especially in the summer). A small children's area with a few swings, Jungle gym and sand all around. Toilets are clean and well maintained. There are three baseball fields - I think a lot of Little League teams play during weekends. But I have not seen any teams playing during the week. The fields are for T-ball (under 10 years old) , older kids 8-10 and the largest field is for teens on up. Adjacent to the fields are the tennis courts and a small Skate Park. I saw a few charcoal grills and maybe three or four picnic tables. No notices for reserving anything, so it must be a first come, first served basis. The Downey Fire Department holds some sort of Fire Rescue exercises in one corner of the park - but that is completely fenced off. Parking can be very crowded on weekends, depending on play schedules. This park is well maintained, probably since it is smaller, it's easier to keep clean. Seems to be a point of pride too for the neighborhood. (I can only speak for daytime hours though.) I've seen graffiti get cleaned up almost within 24 hours, so I personally feel safe walking there. read more

This is a review towards the skate park : This skatepark is a fun place for skaters to learn and do the big tricks. On one side there are stairs, extendeds and rails. Ledges and ramps. Staff do walk around to make sure kids are not causing trouble. read more

Doesn't look much when you enter the front parking lot where the skate park is but once you go deeper towards the back, there's a lot to see. There are tennis courts, softball fields, futsal courts, playground, clean restrooms next to the fields, and a lot of space. read more

Cool low key park ... I usually get my jog on ... Strange thing tho ... at certain time during the day, it smells like skunk, and I see people laughing and eating jack in the box ... oh well ... They have a skate park, baseball field, and tennis courts ... Not gang infested, with dope heads or Bums taking a nap under the trees ... There is even a playground! I was hoping to really like this park after reading the reviews, but I was disappointed. The skate park was nice, lots of cute little skaters in skinny jeans. That was fun to watch. The playground was clear across the park their were 4 big kid swings a 2 little kid swings. The play equipment is all plastic and has a sign that says its for kids 5 - 8 (if I remember correctly). I have a 3 year old who had fun. I was a little disappointed to walk up and hear another mother repeating the word "shit" to her kid. First sign that this might not be the park for us. There were also some shady characters hanging out around the park that creeped me out a bit too. I was also slightly worried about leaving my car there, the final sign . . . . we won't be returning. read more

Great little neighborhood park ! I have lived near for the past 12 yrs. park is located on bellflower blvd between Dunrobin Ave. And bellflower. There is a secret little entrance on Dunrobin Ave. You won't know it's there unless you actually walk all the way there and see the opening. Anyhow - great place to keep fit with a walk or run. They have doggie bags for your pet so you can clean up after him in case u forgot yours that day. This is the home of the Downey girls little league softball. So weekends it's packed with games as early as 6am. The skatepark is also very cool for the kids. It's stays well lit until about 10 pm. They also have tennis courts which require a reservation. 2 sets Bathrooms are also open u til sundown. One playground with sand.. Great place to have bday parties n BBQ. Only a few benches are left so you may Need To BYOwn. Snack bar only open during sports events - 4 stars because since it is such a little place.. It attracts a lot of kids that ditch school from the Columbus continuation school.. And sometimes I see a lot of pot smokers there. There are times when I see people sleeping in the far corners of the park..so sometimes it can be creepy if you are alone. Just keep your eyes open is all I'm saying.. read more

This park would of got five stars if it weren't for the ridiculous policy they have for the tennis court reservations. Two consecutive days of playing tennis I have been kicked out of the court because people can literally go to the front desk pay $5 and "reserve" a court that is already in use. What kind of crap is that!!!! It's called a RESERVATION for a reason. You are suppose to hold your spot for a future time not just because all the courts are taken and you don't want to wait. So you pay and kick someone off the court that was there way before you!!!!!!! And if you are a decent human being and reserve your spot in ADVANCE, the park does not put up signs saying the courts are reserved. So if you happened to choose a court that is reserved you won't know till the people get there and all the other courts are taken, so you end up waiting for someone else to finish playing even though you were there before them. BUNCH OF BS!!!!!! Long story short there is no waiting time to make a reservation!!!! read more

great place. went here for a tennis tourney and it was better than i expected. there are bleachers and some shade. a downer is that if your kid is playing on the second set of courts you have to look through the green shade cloth or sit in the doorway to the courts. the restrooms are the standard city park ones. there is lots of grass if you are walking your pup. plenty of parking. read more

Daughter plays softball here with Downey Ponytail. Come back every year,my son loves the small playground and skate park. There's lots of room for the kids to run around and ample parking even with 4 games of softball going on at the same time, Overall good place to come and unwind a little in the shade of the providing trees. read more

Local skatepark and that's always good, don't usually go, it's more of an occasional visit every here and there to skate with some friends, the locals are really friendly and there are workers there that watch over just in case someone get's hurt! Lucy is one of the coolest workers here! and idk if angie still works here but she's nice too!! some of the guys aren't though. read more
