Great dirt jogging track and shaded picnic areas.
    Stephanie V.

This is the city park closest to where I live. Some of the things I like about this park is the track around the park, the shaded picnic areas, the ample parking in both the lot and surrounding streets, and the new electric car charging stations. The recent upgrades and renovations to the park specifically the renovations to the playground structures look great. I do wish this park had more trees that provided more shade especially around the jogging track, and that the grass was kept up with a little better.

It's not a huge park but have a lots of things to keep you busy, there are four big ramadas with 6 benches and a grill each one, two playgrounds. baseball park, basketball and exercise machines.

    Beautiful large trees

What a beautiful park! I'm so glad they finally reopened it. Lots of large, gorgeous trees and shade. There were a bunch of parrots in the trees when I went there last time. There are bunch of sport fields but I wouldn't know details as I haven't visited that section. Good number of parking spots available. Park is kept clean and felt safe. Would definitely return.

The 2016 YELP 500, Review #201: I wanted the WALKING TRAIL to be its own separate entity, complimenting Furman Park, but I guess that was denied by Yelp. You know Yelp the people that allow for every ride at the 6 Disney parks near me in Florida to be their own entity... as well as the rides on the Santa Monica Pier. That is odd... What is good for the Goose is good for the Goose. Screw the gander? CONCEPT: Allow people form out of town... like me to find walking tracks and trails for fitness walks. A park doesn't tell me enough but you can read my review and know if you require a larger loop, another place all together or plan how many laps you would need to do to reach your daily goal. :-) On to my review of the WALKING TRACK... NOT FURMAN PARK This is a wonderful little asset to Furman Park and I mean that literally becasue it is far from intimidating at .55 miles in total length. Due to the fact that it is comprised of sand and pebbles it could be a little messy on a rainy day, so be forewarned to have a change of clothing/shoes and a towel, as you see fit. I did note that on a Sunday there was a caretaker here at the park tending to the property (picking up trash and sweeping up shelters adjacent to the trail) and really keeping things looking great. Although this is officially called a "Walking Trail", there were plenty of people doing a slow run/jog here. The hours are from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. daily, which fits most people's lifestyles at some time during the week. I love that this Trail runs right past the workout station. It's sort of a mini gym which instead of having weights works off your own weight for most of the machines. Restrooms are conveniently located near the basketball court in the central part.of the park. Water can be obtained from a water fountain adjacent to the trail.

When I decided to get back into a walking routine, three things about the location were important to me: somewhere I wouldn't be accosted by a creep, attacked by a dog or hit by a car. And I found all three in abundance at the Furman Park Walking Trail. I walk in the morning anywhere between 7:30 am and 9:00 am and I've always found a high volume of walking traffic that makes me feel safe from any stranger danger, I've yet to see a scary pet among the dogs being walked and I'm obviously not going to run into a car on a walking trail ... or vice-versa. The .55 mile, mostly shaded, trail loops around the perimeter of the park and is dry, flat and well-maintained. In fact, as of this writing, the park is installing lights along the trail so that those who prefer to walk when the sun's not up will be able to see where they're going. It looks like they're almost done, so I'm guessing night walkers will be supported by the end of the month. There's plenty of lot and street parking (street sweeping on Weds after 10:00 am ... don't get ticketed!), and the park also has an area with fitness equipment, tennis courts and a small basketball court. The people who populate the path and the park are all the people you can think of: runners, walkers, fit people, newcomers, dog walkers, stroller pushers, big people, small people, people walking alone and together and more. I see folks who bring yoga mats and other equipment and do stretching and floor work under the trees, and a group of women who appear to be in some kind of fitness boot camp. It's like a big, open-air gym with absolutely zero judgement or attitude. If you're looking for a safe, pleasant place to walk and maybe get some other exercise, consider Furman Park. I'm thrilled that I found it and give it five enthusiastic stars!

    Furman Park updates (11/13/14)
    Jenni M.

Furman Park has recently received a few improvements this year (2014), namely a newly renovated walking/jogging trail and new playground equipment. In addition, there are tennis courts, basketball hoops, youth baseball diamonds, and restrooms. I often see youth soccer teams playing here too, but there isn't a dedicated soccer field to my knowledge. It's a mostly clean park, although you'll still see some trash lying around at least in the kiddie area. There are some large trees at the Rives entrance that drop fruit on the sidewalk and into the playground area. As much as the City tries to clean it up, our 1-year-old always tries to pick them up or they get all over the stroller wheels. Nasty. The area is fairly safe. Many local families reserve picnic tables and other facilities here for birthdays and other celebrations. To do so, you must show proof of residency and reserve what you need at least two weeks prior. This is also where they hold free concerts during the summer months. It can get crowded at certain times, but not really bad in my opinion. Overall, it's a great park with a nice parking lot & street parking. Review #316

New playground designated for 2-12 year olds

***4.5 stars*** I give it a 1/2 star upgrade from my previous review. They have updated both children's playgrounds which is very nice thanks to the Downey Kiwanis Foundation. The new plastic playground does heat up in the sun and may burn the tooshies of the munchkins, so parents beware. At least it's not like the metal slides they had before, ouch! In addition to the new playground they have updated that walking/running trail, no more dirt path, now it seems to be some bark stuff, I'd still prefer to run on the street, but it is a nice path to walk on, it's about .55 miles each lap. I think these new additions have been a great upgrade for the park. Only gripe is the parking or should I say lack thereof. Very small lot that often fills up quickly and on the weekends the street parking also fills up quickly, especially with sports events and parties. All-in-all still love this park to run to and enjoy with the kiddos.

Park is looking great with the new playgrounds. My kids can't wait. & the trail will b be a great improvement. Only reason I didn't give 5 stars is because of the trees. The fruit that they drop are nasty. Wish they would replace them. Update: 04/09/15 Playgrounds, walking trail, & fitness area look awsezome. However, too many kids playing in fitness area now.

Grass and open space for soccer

Great North Downey Park. Clean, big walking trail with lots of walkers, BRAND NEW playground equipment for babies/toddlers and a separate area for the bigger kids (around ages 5-10). Several tennis courts, baseball fields, grassy areas for soccer. Also, two rooms for party rentals and also several canopy shelters for parties as well. Restrooms are eh, ok and parking is kinda limited but overall, we use this park for a variety of sporting activities and play. Aside from wilderness park, I think this is hands down the best park in Downey because it has everything and is widely used for sports. Clean and no shady people, either, unlike Apollo park and Denis the menis. Yucky!

    Be safe, y'all.

Good small park for running in between houses. Two laps around counts as a mile. Not crowded to get your running in. Quick in and out.

The playground area is great for all ages my kids had a blast and didn't want to leave. The lake area with the little church in the background is a nice touch, makes it feel more relaxing and not just your typical park. Good walking paths, plenty of grass, and nice spots to just sit and chill. Everything felt well kept and safe, which is a big plus when you're bringing kids. Plenty of room so it didn't feel overcrowded either. Only thing watch out for duck poop on the walkways and grass, especially near the water. Overall, great spot for families. Definitely coming back

It's a very small park and playground area with a couple of bbq pits and several picnic tables. The Park was originally dedicated in 1968 (according to http://www.thedowneypatriot.com/) and was said to have had a pretty cool spiral slide... too bad I never had the chance to see it. At any rate, a new playground was put in and the park was re-dedicated in July of this year ('15). There are two swings for older ages. The only way your baby or younger toddler will get to swing is if you hold them in your lap. No baby swings are available. The area with the slide is nice, but I can't imagine kids any older than preschool really wanting to spend much time here unless you brought a frisbee or something. Both of these area have wood chips (bark mulch) instead of sand or rubber mulch, etc. as the surfacing. If the entire area was fenced in, I might like it better when I have both of our girls to myself. It's not a real busy area with traffic, but there were a few cars moving in and out while we were there on 9/17/15. It was around 11:30 a.m. when we went there and not a soul was in sight. Also, I really wish that the City would develop a better way to contain trash that was probably placed into the open barrel trash cans but made its way back onto the playground and lushes grass areas. Fair amount of street parking available. Review #397 Yelp challenge 78/100
