I've made enquiries here on a couple occasions about getting dresses altered and sleeves shortened. It has always surprised me that such alterations aren't exactly cheap. I guess having a Mom gifted in sewing has spoilt me somewhat! They clearly know what they are doing and I'm sure that they do a brilliant job. The shop feels a bit like a throw back to days when people made do and mended - with an old sewing machine permanently on display. I guess you can't scrimp when it comes to craftsmanship.

Recently moved from down the road into the old Lloyd's bank, I'm glad the village hasn't been left with a dead unit, and expanded to a ajoining bridal shop. Eugenie and Elisa are friendly and experienced with a lot to offer. Alterations work on a week turnover (there's always quite a queue), but they have been known to do shorter jobs when people ring up panicking. They do anything from turning up your trousers to fixing up your wedding dress, by hand and machine. They have a little changing room in the back of the shop, so you can try on to do a fitting- and they'll always be honest about fittings and costings. (just please take your stuff in clean!) If you can't find what your after squirrelled in the many nooks and crannies of the shop- just ask, as there's zips, cotton tapes, elastics, behind the till, and less popular odds and ends like rucksack clips upstairs.

When she moved to Birmingham with me, I think one of the first things she asked me was if there was a place she could get her clothes adjusted. I honestly could not answer, it's not the sort of service I've ever really needed before. While mooching around the Indoor Market in the city centre we found City Tailoring. Prices might not be as cheap as in Brazil, but it is still pretty cheap, certainly not as expensive as I thought it would be. To shorten legs, for example, it will cost £7. They even fix leather jackets, I thought this would be much more expensive but it only costs around £15 to shorten the arms. It's not only shortening they do, they take care of all kinds of alterations, fit new buttons and zips, reline jackets they even make curtains. It's all really cheap and the guy there is a nice fella. There is a quick turnaround and they always look busy. Looks like a good place for any basic tailoring needs!
