Been to this place several times. Every time I have a wonderful experience and laugh the whole time. I like this place better than Improv Boston. The stage setup and atmosphere has a better flow and I like that it is in the North End so that you can get a good bite to eat also. Actors are always top notch. read more

Hilarious. I saw the 7:30 pm main stage show last weekend 8/22 at a friends recommendation. It's well worth it, haven't laughed that hard in a while. Fun atmosphere, great crowd and you can get into the midnight show free if you stick around and they have opening seats. You won't regret a second of it, I'm going back. Instead of just another night at a bar or lounge, I really wanted some fun entertainment for the night, yelped comedy club and decided to go to the RAUNCH show this past Saturday. IT WAS F-ING HILARIOUS!!! Granted, my friend and I were 4-5 drinks in deep, but we were thoroughly entertained and laughing the entire hour. And bonus points for the bar serving Prosecco! I never write reviews but I just had to for the Improv Asylum. All my brothers and sisters went (10 of us) as our Christmas present to each other and we had the best time. Those actors were so cleaver and funny and we all loved it. The whole production was run beautifully. We were a little late because we were still at dinner and they called to check on us! They even put my leftovers in the fridge with my name on it so I could grab it on my way out - they rock! read more

Having been to a decent number of improv and comedy clubs around the country, I can say that the Improv Asylum is hands down, my favorite. We went to the Saturday 7:30pm show this past weekend. The best part of the night was comedy itself, but the location was also perfect for us to get dinner before in the North End and go out after for a drink. We had to get tickets a few weeks early to get any seating together (a good signal that the show is in high demand). The show was a mix of improv and sketch comedy, which we loved because the audience stayed engaged throughout the show during the improv scenes, and we could also enjoy the more polished, planned sketches that benefit from a director's touch. The actors are amazing - it's unbelievable how much they can put together on a whim with a few suggestions from the audience. The setup of the place was also really cool (yes - it's in the basement of a CVS; no - you'd never know there are people getting their prescriptions filled upstairs). There's a bar outside the stage and it was pretty lively. The line was long, and they definitely could have used another person as the showtime approached, but it was nice that we had a place to hang out while we waited for the show and during the break. The setup of the stage was also really interesting - 360 degree seating around the stage - we loved it. Bottom line - if you're looking for the best comedy club in Boston, this is it. read more

Highly recommend!!! I went with the boyfriend for a Friday night show and then returned for a much rowdier midnight cards against humanity show. The first show was amazingly funny....SO worth it! Midnight show crowd was a little bit too drunk and loud to fully enjoy the show but that's OK it was still great. One con...the bar options were pretty limited. I don't always laugh as much as the crowd at comedy shows. I think it takes more for me to be impressed. But I was laughing pretty hard at the late night show I attended. I applaud their creativity, on the spot wit,v and I love the rap battle they have based on crowd ideas. Very ingenious and entertaining. Great for groups! read more

Went to the mainstage show to start off a bachelorette party and had a blast. Skits and improv were funny. They pulled our bachelorette out of the crowd and had her perform with them. Drinks were a little pricey, but tasty. read more

What promised to be a funny and entertaining night turned out to be a disappointment, as most of the skits were lame. I've seen good improv and this bore no resemblance. A number of people in my party were also offended at the one sided political cheap shots in the show. Pretty pathetic excuse for improv. read more

This place is great! We laughed the whole time, was a great night activity. $10 bucks for an hour and a half show, you can't beat that!

First, this is a review of Improv Asylum's classes aka the "Training Center." My opinion of the Improv Theatre, i.e. the shows, is that they are generally fantastic --and often much fun. The story regarding the classes can be much more mixed. But good things first: the classes can be a lot of fun, can be challenging if you are an introvert, and the great majority of the teachers are all charming, open-minded, and easy going --but, alas, not all of them. After a very encouraging few classes, we had the misfortune to be assigned to Jeremy, which should have been in many ways a treat as Jeremy is the artistic director of the training center. Nevertheless, Jeremy was never happy about teaching the class (it not only showed, he told us early on) and proceeded to be ruthless and cruel in its criticism to everybody in class --throughout. The weakest member of the budding class took the brunt of his criticisms --and this was mostly everyone as our class size reduced further and further to the point where we were way too small to do much. This is not to say that Jeremy does not know what he is doing --he does, and he certainly knows what is effective improv. Nor is it to say that he is not funny --Jeremy is very much funny, but his focus was certainly on the cruel aspects of comedy with the students being the object of his wrath (plus his staff and admin assistant as well). There was clearly a mismatch between what Jeremy as our instructor wanted done and what we his paying trainees expected. For the first classes we had other instructors. Had he been there, he would have heard that --in the opening Q/A-- only three people actually wanted to do improv on stage --everybody else wanted to explore different aspects of improvisation to become better in their professional lives or self-expression. Jeremy instead clearly wanted to be surrounded by a group of adoring dedicated improv performers that could be subjected to the harsh treatment that a master teacher can dice, to have us pay our dues on our way to being on-stage. But we just wanted to have a safe, warm space where we could dip our toes on improv and --if everything would have worked well-- continue on and maybe try it with an audience. Frankly, one star might sound harsh --yet, several teachers such as Christine, Brian, Alex, and Joey really strived to make us become more secure in our improv choices and wanted us to continue. Yet Jeremy made sure to nullify all of this work and was downright cruel with the paying participants of his classes. That is unprofessional, goes against great work that other teachers do, and against the financial health of Improv Asylum, and especially against an open, joyful approach to comedy. p.s.: There is something our teacher did right, and that was to try to tone down much of the comedy around "wronged" men and their girlfriends, which can get out of hand when most of the crew is male. read more

We arrived about 30 minutes early and enjoyed a drink at the bar before the show (you can bring it in the show as well). The show was HILARIOUS and perfectly raunchy for the adult crowd. I must have gone on an "off" night, because the show was not funny at all; it was more like the audience laughing at the presumed right times. I have seen comedy shows, including improv in a number of places, including NYC, and I can honestly say that this show was the worst I had ever attended. Located on the popular Hanover Street in the North End, this is a great place to take a friend (or date) post dinner. I have to say, I appreciated their "Who's Line is it Anyway" style skits better than their "SNL" attempts. Overall, funny. If you're expecting to be seated in a grand theatre-style auditorium, think again. It's more of an organized basement with seats set up auditorium style. Even though the actors are center stage, they definitely face one side more than the others (when you're ordering from their online form, it's section 1, the section pictured on the most bottom portion of the seating chart that pops up at you :). I love this place! I think I've become obsessed with them, actually. I've been several times to the Thursday, Friday, and Saturday shows, including the midnight "no holds barred" show. The actors are absolutely hilarious! I love the general admission seating - there really isn't a bad viewing spot. And the buckets of beer are cheap and cold. My boyfriend even had my surprise birthday party here! Management was super friendly and accommodating in allowing us the lobby space an hour before the show for my party. If you're going to either the 8 or 10pm Saturday shows, you can come back for the Midnight Show for free! Seriously, do it. I have never laughed so hard in my life. Oh, and if you're a bride on her bachorlette party and don't want to talk about your "first time" and then have it acted out in the most hilarious way ever, this probably isn't the place for you. Last time I was in town I went to the Cards Against Humanity show - amazing. This time? Not so much. It wasn't hilarious in the slightest. Obviously, part of it is the fact the audience chose awful cards that were very expected - therefore, not funny. How many penis jokes does one show need? None... because we're not in middle school anymore. I'll probably still end up going back, because I think tonight was just an off night and truly do believe the actors are very good, but tonight just didn't showcase it like last time. I hope if this was anyone's first time going, that they'll give it a second chance. Also, they added a new guy to the mix - Ryan, and I hope he's not at the next show. read more

Our favorite place in Boston to go for comedy. We love it here and have gone 3 times now. It's a blend of improv with interaction from the audience and skits. Will keep going! Went to a show Sat night and it was a fun night . Great live skit show that is funny and affordable. Crew is very talented. Show is geared to adults so do not bring children. Only gave it 4 stars rather than 5 because the show is held in the basement and the seating is very tight (North End location). I recently attended an improv session on a Friday night and had some good belly laughs. I stuck around after the 10:00 show to watch the midnight session and that's when it took a turn for the worse. It seems as if the improvers left their A game at the 10:00 show. I love improv and I enjoyed the 10:00 show but the midnight had me feeling awkward for the actors when they attempted, but failed, at some pretty simple topics. I have experienced better improv in other cities and the Friday night show was no comparison. My girlfriend agrees. read more
