Singular is a fancy white-tablecloth restaurant in downtown, but just outside of the main…read morehustle-and-bustle area, so it's on a quieter block. With its live piano music and soft European decor, it's on the more romantic side. If you're here with friends, you may have to try to keep your voice lower, so conversations wouldn't be the most comfortable. But we made it work! If you want a more open and less hush-hush atmosphere, inside is an option, where it's more social and artsy. The food is outstanding. My friend got the octopus and she said it was the best she's ever had. I wish I got what she got! Another friend got the risotto (vegetarian option) and she loved that. I got the ceviche because I wasn't that hungry, but I thought it was delicious and better than any ceviche I had in Peru. It's a small portion, but it's just an appetizer. We finished with chocolate ice cream covered with peanuts, always a winner! The service was good. The manager checked on us and made sure everything was fine. Our dishes took an extra long time to arrive, but we dealt with it, and it seems like that's the norm in Azores. So don't come here expecting a rushed meal. Take your time at Singular and enjoy!

I'm so glad we got to try Otaka for lunch and dinner on our last day in the Azores. Otaka serves a…read moreelevated Japanese Peruvian fusion cuisine. For lunch we tried a fish crudo, fish taco, ribs, and lomo saltado. All very tasty but my favorite was the lomo saltado. It did not come with fries like I've had at other peruvian restaurants in the states, but it was good with a side of rice to soak up the yummy sauce. For dinner, we tried the 10 course tasting menu. Each of the courses were beautiful pieces of art with unique complex flavors. It was truly a tasting menu, so I would suggest eating something before the tasting menu so you aren't starving and can truly enjoy each dish. The cod and the wagyu beef were definitly the star courses. There are 2 seatings, 6:30 and 9:30 so make sure you make a reservation.

Good food, a lovely atmosphere, and attentive service. We chose the local tasting menu, which…read moreoffered a nice variety of dishes. Unfortunately, there was a hair in one of my courses. The staff handled it professionally by apologizing promptly and replacing the dishes, but it was still disappointing, especially for what was meant to be a special birthday dinner. We were served an extra chocolate dessert to celebrate. Overall, the meal was enjoyable and decently executed, though none of the dishes particularly stood out or felt especially memorable. It's also definitely on the pricier side compared to other tasting menu experiences I've had.

This place looks super cool, but I would recommend trying another place in the general area. I'm…read morenot sure if it was because the holiday (New Years) had just passed, but the meal started with a list of what was NOT available which was more than a quarter of the menu -- which also included no white wine by the glass and no beer. The white sangria pitcher was almost too bitter to drink. The croquettes were a tasty starter -- but the cheese wrapped in filo dough was a non-starter. The beet risotto was pleasant but not necessarily memorable. The Hot Cold dessert was a big disappointment. It has beautiful presentation, but we could not finish even the small dessert. Our service was less than ideal. The restaurant was not full, yet you could see their intense stress levels. With the high quality of dinners we'd had for similar and even lower price in the area, we really expected a lot more.

A quick dip in soy sauce, and it was exploding with flavor. It's the best seared tuna we've ever had. I got the octopus legs, which was the BEST octopus I've ever had. And this is coming from someone who immediately orders octopus as soon as she sees it on the menu. I had octopus four times in a week in the Azores, and this was the best. I don't know what they do to the octopus to make it so tender, but it melts in your mouth like butter, and the ends of the tentacles are crispy perfection. Even the side dishes are good here! My octopus came with perfectly cooked and savory potatoes and Brussels sprouts, as well as a small fresh salad. My husband's tuna came with a broccoli steak and the same perfect potatoes. I know I use perfect a lot in this review, but that's all I could say about this food. It was executed that well. My only complaint would be that there is a slight smell of something like bleach throughout the restaurant. You get used to it, but it was off-putting at first. Note that you will definitely need to make a reservation in order to get a table. If I recall, I was able to make one through Facebook a week in advance pretty easily. You can't miss a dinner here while I'm Ponta Delgada.

Started off with some calamari and Sao Jorge cheese with bread. The calamari wasn't the best I've ever had, but it was tender and fresh and very light. The Sao Jorge cheese may be the best I have had. By the time it gets to the United States it's certainly a HARD cheese, but this was soft and almost spreadable on the bread. Delicious. The menu here is massive. They had about 6 different Portuguese steak options, but I went for the classic with egg and peppers. I do with there were more red peppers on my steak, but I appreciate the hefty amounts of garlic and sauce. The steak itself was cooked perfectly to medium rare and tender. I'm not a big steak girlie but I ate the whole thing in no time. The bottle of wine certainly helped it go down easily. Finished the meal with a chocolate crepe, which I can still taste as I type this. Loved this place and will come back every time I am in Ponta Delgada.
