Rice bowl mainly featuring (not freshly made) pickled ginger.
Julia H.

I've been to the cork town location and although it was incredibly busy, we had a great time and good food. Last weekend we tried the midtown location where the vibe was very chill. The person seating is asked if we would like to sit at the window, we said no because it looked uncomfortable. We were seated at a 2 top next to the kitchen. There were 4 tops available but I understand saving those for 4 people. There was another 2 top behind us but every other party of 2 was seated at a comfortable 4 top. We felt punished because we didn't want to look at the street instead of each other. The food was overwhelmingly disappointing. My tofu rice bowl was strange, tons of green onion stems and a portion of pickled ginger the size of my fist. The tofu was spiced nicely but we couldn't figure out how the dish was supposed to be eaten. I just ate the tofu. My friend had curry chicken ramen that looked like it was served with a slice of deli lunch meat. The sauce was very salty and tasted like golden curry I use at home. Our cucumber salad was fine and we enjoyed that. For those two marginal entrees, one cucumber salad and one hot tea, our bill was $60.00. The prices are way over the top. The servers were really great.

Fried CHICKEN Bites

This ramen spot is cute on the inside, however lacks some key menu items. I really wanted a creamy tonkotsu broth which is a pretty common menu item at ramen shops, but this place did not have it. I am also used to having pork belly with ramen, however, they only offer pork loin or chicken. The food is pretty good, just not what I was looking for. I was also disappointed because I wanted to try their mezcal cocktail but the server came back later to say that they were out of the ingredients, but didn't offer any sort of recommendation or comparison.

We walked in on a Friday night and waited maybe 10 minutes. They quoted us a bit longer, but we got seated after a quick loop around the block. Started with the togarashi fried tofu bites. They marinate these in something that tastes like a Japanese broth base - really delicious! The tofu has real flavor before you even add the citrus. Best thing we ordered. The Tokyo street fries work well. They drizzle eel sauce over crispy fries. Who knew this would be such a strong combo! I got the unagi don. Ima loads this bowl with eel and pairs it with avocado. The avocado adds a creamy fat that balances the glaze. Not overly sweet and good textures throughout. Although this paired with the Tokyo street fries can be a bit much on the eel sauce. I wouldn't recommend ordering both together. My wife ordered the shoyu ramen. It hit the basics but didn't do much beyond that. The chicken needed more flavor in the broth. Still really solid. Ima always has a chill vibe without being too hectic or too slow. The wait staff were great and super attentive, which we always appreciate!

My friend and I were on a little road trip and asked a local Michigander where to grab lunch. He recommended Ima and since we both love Asian food it was an easy choice. We came at lunchtime, ordered at the host stand, and the food was brought to us. The space was such a vibe with fresh plants, natural light, and locally made fountain sodas in unique flavors. We shared the spicy tuna with rice crisps. We thought it would be crispy rice but it came with little rice cracker chips that were so good and had the perfect crunch. The tuna flavor was spot on. I ordered a side of rice noodles with shoyu broth which was great, but the glazed broccolini was the real star. Great vibes, great food. We will be back next time we are in town.

Ima Midtown immediately caught our attention with its inviting curb appeal, so my friend and I decided to pop in -- and I'm glad we did. I started with the Spicy Chicken Karaage Bites, which lived up to their name in the best way possible -- crispy, flavorful, and packing just the right amount of heat. For my main, I went with the Tori Paitan Ramen featuring smoked pork loin. The broth was rich, layered, and bursting with flavor, with the subtle hint of sesame oil adding a perfect finishing touch. The generous portion of tender smoked pork loin in the bowl was an unexpected (and very welcome) surprise. Overall, Ima Midtown delivers both on presentation and taste, and I'll definitely be back for another bowl.

Stopped in on a Saturday afternoon with a reservation and was seated immediately. The hostess informed us that they were short staffed that day, but our service was so good, I wouldn't have even noticed it. Started with the Japanese pickles and spicy togarashi tofu, which were the perfect combo. The curry yaki udon was perfectly delicious, especially with the addition of the soft egg and pork belly! The yuzu ginger hard cider was another delight!

$5 happy hour, 3-6 pm Monday through Friday

I was excited to check out Ima Noodles after a visit to the DIA nearby. We were seated right away and I noticed that the dining area is large and a great place for groups. Being close to Wayne State's campus made it full of young people with great happy hour deals - can't beat $5 bao buns, yaki ramen, sake carafes, and Sapporo! Our server was very kind and patient with us while we browsed the large menu. Nate and I ordered the pork belly bao and kimchi yakisoba noodles from the happy hour menu. Our food came out quickly and the buns were perfection - soft and pillowy, and full of tender pork (it was more like pulled pork vs. pork belly, but it was delicious). The noodles were just okay - they were a bit dried out and I didn't notice a lot of kimchi. But for $5 it wasn't a big deal. I loved this cozy spot and would be here often if I lived in the area!

Miso Ramen with root veggies

I like the vibe here it's very mellow. The servers are very nice and friendly. Have great recommendations. The Tokyo street fries were so yummy and crispy. I love the seasoning on the steamed edamame. It tangy and spicy. The miso ramen with root veggies was so flavorful the veggies were cooked but still had a bite to them so they were not mushy. My friend loved her chicken pho. I like eating here and any of there locations

Tori Paitan Ramen

I tried ramen for the first time and ordered the Tori Ramen with pork loin and the pork was amazing, but I wasn't a fan of the noodles. They were slightly undercooked. I also had a hibiscus refresher during happy hour that was really good, with a nice balance of sweetness and alcohol. Overall, a nice experience and I'd come back to try pho next.

Shoyu Ramen with pork belly

I came here today for lunch with a friend. It was my first time at this location but I've been to ima izakaya before. The atmosphere of the restaurant was very nice. Felt like a super comfortable place to come after classes or even just do some work. Our waitress was really nice and didn't rush us at all. The food is where I was left a little underwhelmed. Nothing tasted bad, but nothing was out of this world either. The dumplings were a little chewy and lackluster. I didn't like the spicy sauce that came with them either, but my friend loved the sauce. The ramen was good, very full bowl. The broth was a little oily and the ramen was overcooked :/ I dont know, I'm sure it's not always like this but it was just a little meh for the $35 price.

Curry Yaki Udon

The vibe of the restaurant is lively especially with the plants hanging off the windows. Our food was really good, I think the only thing missing was spice. We did ask for chili oil and paste on the side but it was still more mild than we expected. Our waitress was great.

Spicy sesame chicken ramen noddles

Rich and savory chicken spicy broth with ramen noddles are my favorite. Enjoyed dinner with family and will definitely go back again to try other dishes.

Their ramen was really good and authentic tasting. The service was quick and they have counter service at times. The place is clean and has a cute vibe. This place can get really packed sometimes but it is for a reason!

Hands down my favorite ramen spot. Nothing else needs to be said. The flavor, the portion, the options. Ima is THE spot.

Ask the Community - Ima Noodles

When will the owner open an izakaya? I'm sure it would be awesome. I think Mike has the ability to establish the best Japanese restaurants in Detroit.

Are there any gluten-free options?

Yes. They are noted on the menu with GF. My friend had one of their rice bowls and really enjoyed it

Hubby and I laughed at how many times we zipped past the restaurant without noticing it. My husband and I both ordered the Major Tom Khatsu, which has a coconut chicken broth base. The chicken katsu pieces were the perfect level of crispy without being heavily breaded. There was also a nice little kick to the dish, which made it so, so yummy. Our friends got the Shoyu ramen with pork belly, and the Corned Beef ramen. The Shoyu dish seemed to be more enjoyable. Though we stuck with water, cans of Faygo pop seemed to be the drink offerings - other than alcoholic beverages. Areas for improvement include the waiting. Johnny Noodle King is a small place, with a main dining area and then what seems to be a bar area attached. We initially waited by the door for our table along with another small group (we were a party of four). We were then asked to go to the bar area to wait so that it would clear the door, but found it interesting how we were asked to move but not the other group. Also, we were standing away from the doormat we were not obstructing anyone's movements. The wait was long, and we asked if we could order food to the bar area (as opposed to waiting for a table). We were told 'no', yet there was a table full of patrons who were eating. There was no notification system, so our friend had to keep going to the front to see if our table was ready. Don't get me wrong; 'hooray' to Johnny Noodle King for having such great business volume. However, they need a way to manage it so that people will not be put off. Once we were seated, we did have good service from our waitstaff, and the food was very good. My husband and I plan to return to explore more of the menu. Hopefully, we can pick a time of day when waiting won't be such a big issue.

After graduating my girlfriend [now wife] and I would make it a point to try and eat at Matsu-Chan when in the area, even after our first kiddo, and eventually our second. Last year before one of our trips to the area my wife let me know that they were under new management and when I looked at the new menu, I was saddened that all of my favorite items were no longer present, and it seemed that my beloved little slice of Japan was now "just" a ramen shop. While my wife loves and can handle ramen and the broth, I would typically get the different rice bowls, or other entrees because while I love me some good ramen it doesn't work out well for me with the hour or so trip to the area. We'd get some rolls, takoyaki, and other appetizers to share around the table before digging into our main entrees. With the increased prices, and fewer options, I will end up going to any of the multitude of places [Aji-ten is usually our #2] to get my kick. I'll miss the little shop and the times I've had, like perusing the manga while waiting for a table. I wish the old owners the best, and the new management as well, especially if it was a familial transfer, but Matsu-Chan is not for me anymore. My wife will eventually get up there and let me know how it is, but for now, I'm just happy that a little bento shop opened near my workplace run by two first gen transplants, so I can at least get my fix without the drive.

The latter was served with sliced pork, bamboo shoots, fish cake, and seaweed. The broth was full of flavor; I enjoyed every slurp. I appreciated that the meal was sizeable and inexpensive - I was able to stretch it to two meals. We did not linger given the number of people waiting.
