I have been here many times and it's great each time. I ordered the hot chicken ramen and it was very tasty. The service is pretty fast as well. There is plenty of seating and ambiance is fine. I like that it's close to the hospitals.
One of my favorites foods and service is always excellent pleasant kind, patient ambience university wayne state .. type café always enjoy it.
I choose a neutral recommended dish called Shoyu ramen with sesame chicken. The dish was flavorful but didn't get all the ingredients advertised such as the buttered baby corn that comes with the dish however it was still good.
I got takeout with some friends on a Monday night, and I have to say that the curry udon was not up to what I usually like. The broth was quite thin and spicy, whereas I typically like a thicker, milder curry. However, I think the fried tofu bites were delicious. I'd like to try something else, such as regular udon, the next time I come here!
After attending dalley in the alley my friends and I decided to get dinner at Ima. There was about a 30 minute wait but there is great people watching in the area lol Once seated we started with the endamame and the miso cucumbers. Both were good. The cucumbers have a peanut butter aftertaste which was weird but good (if that makes sense). I ordered the Teri-yaki udon with the seafood melody (shrimp, clams, mussels and crawfish). This was my first time ordering this and I think it's my new favorite! All of the seafood was cooked perfectly, the noodles soaked up the broth and seasoning so well. I almost want to go back tonight and get it again.
Stopped into Ima while in Detroit for a work trip and really enjoyed it! It's also a really great spot for solo dining if you're exploring the city or traveling for work. I started with the pickled appetizer plate, which was a great light starter with lots of flavor, then ordered the spicy Tori chicken ramen. The broth had a really nice kick without being overwhelming, and the chicken was super tender. Definitely a cozy, satisfying stop after a long day. Would absolutely come back next time I'm in Detroit!
It kind of gave a generic ramen feeling. There weren't many ramen options to choose from. This was my 1st time at Ima, but not my first time having ramen. I was there with my boss and another team member. If I'm being honest, I'm happy I didn't pay for it. My boss treated us and I was hungry. I didn't give 1 star because our waitress was good and our food was hot. I don't think I'll be back
We walked in on a Friday night and waited maybe 10 minutes. They quoted us a bit longer, but we got seated after a quick loop around the block. Started with the togarashi fried tofu bites. They marinate these in something that tastes like a Japanese broth base - really delicious! The tofu has real flavor before you even add the citrus. Best thing we ordered. The Tokyo street fries work well. They drizzle eel sauce over crispy fries. Who knew this would be such a strong combo! I got the unagi don. Ima loads this bowl with eel and pairs it with avocado. The avocado adds a creamy fat that balances the glaze. Not overly sweet and good textures throughout. Although this paired with the Tokyo street fries can be a bit much on the eel sauce. I wouldn't recommend ordering both together. My wife ordered the shoyu ramen. It hit the basics but didn't do much beyond that. The chicken needed more flavor in the broth. Still really solid. Ima always has a chill vibe without being too hectic or too slow. The wait staff were great and super attentive, which we always appreciate!
This ramen spot is cute on the inside, however lacks some key menu items. I really wanted a creamy tonkotsu broth which is a pretty common menu item at ramen shops, but this place did not have it. I am also used to having pork belly with ramen, however, they only offer pork loin or chicken. The food is pretty good, just not what I was looking for. I was also disappointed because I wanted to try their mezcal cocktail but the server came back later to say that they were out of the ingredients, but didn't offer any sort of recommendation or comparison.
My friend and I were on a little road trip and asked a local Michigander where to grab lunch. He recommended Ima and since we both love Asian food it was an easy choice. We came at lunchtime, ordered at the host stand, and the food was brought to us. The space was such a vibe with fresh plants, natural light, and locally made fountain sodas in unique flavors. We shared the spicy tuna with rice crisps. We thought it would be crispy rice but it came with little rice cracker chips that were so good and had the perfect crunch. The tuna flavor was spot on. I ordered a side of rice noodles with shoyu broth which was great, but the glazed broccolini was the real star. Great vibes, great food. We will be back next time we are in town.
Ima Midtown immediately caught our attention with its inviting curb appeal, so my friend and I decided to pop in -- and I'm glad we did. I started with the Spicy Chicken Karaage Bites, which lived up to their name in the best way possible -- crispy, flavorful, and packing just the right amount of heat. For my main, I went with the Tori Paitan Ramen featuring smoked pork loin. The broth was rich, layered, and bursting with flavor, with the subtle hint of sesame oil adding a perfect finishing touch. The generous portion of tender smoked pork loin in the bowl was an unexpected (and very welcome) surprise. Overall, Ima Midtown delivers both on presentation and taste, and I'll definitely be back for another bowl.
Stopped in on a Saturday afternoon with a reservation and was seated immediately. The hostess informed us that they were short staffed that day, but our service was so good, I wouldn't have even noticed it. Started with the Japanese pickles and spicy togarashi tofu, which were the perfect combo. The curry yaki udon was perfectly delicious, especially with the addition of the soft egg and pork belly! The yuzu ginger hard cider was another delight!
4/5 Tried Ima and ordered the buttery udon. The noodles had a great texture, but it was very salty. It didn't come with any meat or protein, so for around $18 for just a bowl of noodles, it felt pretty pricey. I added a few sides, which were about $2 each including canned baby corn and that definitely added up for pretty simple add-ons. I wasn't too interested in getting the ramen as it did not seem very authentic. We also got the karaage, which was really good while it was hot and crispy. The sauce that came with it was tasty and paired well. Service was good, especially considering it's in a busy college town. Overall, decent food and good service, but the price for what you get makes it more of an occasional stop for me. Bonus points for brining me a side of lemon and ambiance was cute.
Reviews are largely positive. Many highlight the flavorful broths and noodles, friendly and attentive staff, and an inviting, lively ambiance.

The food here is great! The spicy tori ramen is one of my favorites. We came here recently for the happy hour menu and tried their bao buns, edamame, and fries! The staff was friendly who sat us and helped the server bring food to the table, our server was so nice and helpful with menu items. The broth for both ramen were banging with flavor and the spread out of the meat and veggies on top of the ramen were placed on top with so nicely . Truly some of the best noodles I have ever had with my amazing CM @AnnetteJanik! The vibe and ambiance of this place is welcoming--and great for doing for if you need a study/work spot! The miso udon with tofu, noodles, and a soft-boiled egg was outstanding. The broth was more than flavorful, it truly blew my mind away. The vibe was trendy, but in substance this was a better place than I expected to find in a college neighborhood. Having been fortunately seated next to some power outlets after a long day of draining my devices, I took time to peruse a menu that had a lot to offer for almost anyone (I find Japanese places often have small menus with limited support for special dietary needs). Service was on point, and my waitress was quite up to answering detailed questions about menu items from me and others and brought me two hot sauces for the price of one when I couldn't decide (there were four options, in my defense). I got a tea-based mocktail that had a lot of ice but also ample flavor. Pondering numerous options, I felt like the forest ramen was the best bet, offering an ample dose of mushrooms for some needed flavor and fiber. The broth was savory and complex, the seaweed and mushrooms contrasting in taste and texture, and the tofu deliciously roasted. The hottest of the hot sauces went well on my noodles, but they were scrumptious even without. Was it a big bowl for the price? No, but all things considered, I got quality over quantity and that's usually a good decision. read more

I have always wanted to try this restaurant so when my friend invited me to go with her I jumped at the opportunity. The restaurant was a decent size. We sat at the bar and were quickly serviced. Our waitress explained the menu to me and offered a lot of great recommendations since it was my first time. To start I ordered the salmon roll. It was very good! The yuzu ponzu sauce that came with it was the best sauce I have ever had!! As much as I wanted to try the ramen I opted for the Fried Chicken Karaage bowl. We were looking for something soothing and warm to eat as we just finished attending the red wings game. Hockey games bring the shivers with the cool temperatures; combine it with the outside weather in October and your body is screaming for something hot to fill you up. Ramen handles that easily in a pinch and IMA is what we found. Aside from ramen, there's some fried sharables, rice bowls, udon, and pho options. I decided on the spicy pork udon and pops went with the spicy tori ramen w/ pork belly. My dish had a good amount of noodles with smoked pork loin and a soft egg. All the broths are vegan and the udon and ramen come garnished with scallions, nori, and market greens. The chili bone broth for the udon had tenderness and hints of chili for some spice which I liked. They had more garlic and chili oil in the dish than I'm used too but overall it was a hearty udon soup. My dad loved his spicy tori ramen especially after he added the pork belly to the pork loin. The chicken bone broth had a nice color that gave a cool presentation. I'm impressed that a place like this exists in Detroit and it appears to be a local favorite as there was a decent amount of people inside at 930ish on a Saturday evening. Most people were there for ramen/pho but some came specifically for their cocktails which has some character; likely tastes delish too. No alcohol for me that night since I was the designated driver. But next time, I shall partake. read more
I've been to this place a few times now, both locations. I always absolutely love my food. They have great flavor no matter what dish I get. I absolutely love their dumplings. I could get 10 orders of these and eat them all day. I wish they had a menu just for dumplings because theirs are fantastic. All of their food is fantastic though. I highly recommend this place. Great food, great service, plenty of tables so they're good for groups. Don't forget to pay for your street parking! Tickets are $45. read more

Beautiful presentation. Very tasty. I not too saucy and very very salty. Perhaps adding the smoked roasted pork butt ended up making it all the more salty. I had a few bites then requested a takeaway box and cooked up a lot of noodles to add - hoping to cut the salt. Overall, good experience and it was tasty. Ambiance lovely and our waitress very nice. It's always a bit crowded and cold but tolerable for the flavors. It's not traditional it's better. The spins they take are enjoyable bombs of flavor with salt/umami, richness even in vegan dishes. I had my judgements based on my first experiences at the Detroit locations but a few years later and the Madison Heights location has brought me back. I've had miso, shoyu, and forest ramen. We got seated and it took a long time for the waitress to get to us. She was aware and had to apologize. I ordered the spicy tori ramen, my bf had the butter udon. The ramen was a little mushy. It didn't have the chew of a decently cooked noodle. My bf mentioned that the butter udon got too salty for him to eat anymore. Also, just be warned that they charge service fee 3%. She said it was on the menu. For what? I don't understand. It would be easier if they incorporated that increase into their prices. It wouldn't be such a shock when we pay for the food. I am not a bad tipper. I got the screen handed back to me after she swiped my card and I selected 18%, and that's on top of the 3%. read more

I live in Southern California , home to amazing Noodle shops and Japanese food , and I realized today that the best ramen I've had is here in Detroit. Had a great time at Ima! Corktown is up and coming (IMO) and Ima is a great addition! The restaurant itself is cozy and fun. There's a disco ball and a plant wall which adds to the modernity feel. It's not super spacious so definitely make a reservation before if possible. Service was pretty good! The waiter was attentive and made sure we had everything we needed. The only small issue we had was everyone got food at the same time expect for 2 people. Their food came close to 10 minutes after everyone else, which they made sure to apologize for. Now the food... SO good! Everything tasted fresh and flavorful. I truthfully loved everything I ate. I think you get a decent amount of food for the price. I had leftovers that I ate the next day, so you definitely get your fill of food. Can't wait to come back and try more of the yummy food! read more

Ima does make a good broth. Their food does have some American twist to it but it is still good. My Japanese friend likes it and it is much better than your typical Japanese restaurant that tastes like from a packet. Problem is that udon and ramen is food for commoners and regular families back in Japan. $15 for a basic bowl with toppings and if you add proteins that's another couple dollars, total price is pretty expensive. read more

Excellent service. Cool vibe. Delicious beer and vegan options. I was floored when I found one of my favorite east coast IPAs on the menu. Lone Pine Oh-J! Amazing! The menu clearly notates what is vegan and vegetarian. So easy to order. We got the forest ramen and the Spicy Szechuan Yaki Udon with tofu. Both were delicious. I really like ima, I've been a few times now... it's definitely a restaurant for real foodies: fresh ingredients, different flavors, veggie forward. I had the shrimp and scallion dumplings, which are really good, and glazed broccolini which was okay, I'd try the Japanese yam (which I've had before and it's really good) instead. I also had Spicy Szechuan Yaki Udon (with chicken)... I like the Yaki Udon a lot but the chicken that's added is kinda bland, and they don't cook it with the sauce so kinda stays bland even when you mix it in the bowl. I'd get it without chicken if I had to do it again. The other issue I have with the Yaki udon bowls is an over abundance of the sauce it's cooked in kinda sits at the bottom of the bowl and is a somewhat inedible mess that you have to try to find the edible food in... so if you want everything in the bowl maybe you should get ramen. I do usually walk out of ima feeling like "damn I spent that much?" ($40 for this trip), but I do think the quality of the food is really high with good service... you should definitely try. read more

This might be my favorite restaurant in Detroit. They do everything well. The service is great, happy hour prices are awesome, the decor is very modern and fun. The food and drinks are amazing. It's also great if you're vegan or gluten free. My favorite thing is the tofu karage. read more

Hostess wearing mask. Walking staff aren't. First time actually dining in, but 4th time eating. (First was take out from the Madison Heights location.) I was given 2 menus and told that I could sit anywhere. Water, cups, and appetizer plates were placed on the table. When my friend arrived, the waitress took out orders. Nice atmosphere, great food and prompt service. Open for take out and precautions in place for dining inside (Feb 2021). Ramen is always packed with yummy ingredients of varying texture, flavor profile and depth that makes it so enjoyable, especially on a cold day. The spicy chicken sandwich is just that.... SPICY. It has a really nice coating on it for a perfect crunch and is served with Better Made chips. read more
