So - we wanted to check this place out. Checked the hours and found that oddly, they have limited weekend hours! So we made a point of getting there within those hours. Turns out the schedule on their website is wrong: they close at 2a instead of 2p - so relax, you have plenty of time to get there. LOL The outdoor space is wonderful, nestled in between 2 taller buildings. We were there at about 1p in August and almost every spot had shade. There are plans to enclose the wooden structure for winter in some manner, so, although it's all outdoors at the moment, at least part of it will become a 4 season space. Pizza is made in a wood-fired oven. I can honestly say that I would be happy ordering any of their menu offerings - they all sounded great. The staff were all happy and kind, helping each other out. At this point, about a week into their opening, the pizza is still taking a while (20 minutes?) to come out - so if you can't sit still, consider ordering an appetizer. Overall: Fantastic wood-oven pizza in a unique setting in the market Food: I have tried most of the pizzas and you literally can't go wrong. On this visit we tried the Holy Shittake and Vegetariano. Both incredible with generous toppings. If I had to choose I'd get the Holy Shitake again as it was unique and damn delicious Drinks: They have a pretty decent line up of beer and summery cocktails. We did not indulge on this visit but they did have some appealing happy hour deals Service: Our service was fast and friendly! The server was professional and knowledgeable and all around good experience with service here Atmosphere: This is a unique spot, wedged between two buildings, they have nice patio lights above in an open setting. We found this place as we were walking around the area, initially wanted to visit Benny's Bistro, but didn't realize they close at 2:30PM. This is an outdoor patio, with a covered area by the bar, an overall casual place. With the weather hovering in the high 20's today, I didn't mind the outdoor seating. The pizza here was thin crusted, and cheese melted nicely! I would say their service can be notched up a little, since one of the servers was casually chilling at a table in the back, and another at the bar was too busy chatting with a client the entire time we were there to notice we wanted to ask for the bill for a while already... It was a nice casual place to stop by, but I wouldn't say I'm hyped up to come back again. read more

Went to grand opening and it was a hit! Live music while people danced, socialized and indulged in some pretty amazing wood-fired pizza. The atmosphere is lively and fun. I've been to Il Vicolo a number of times before and since their grand opening, and I have to admit it - yes, I'm a fan... and this is from someone who has a more preferred pizza restaurant well I may be changing my loyalty! I'm sorry to see the mixed reviews of service as I've been fortunate enough to have received excellent service each time. I'm guessing that this is part of their "growing pains" while they figure out appropriate levels of staffing for their peaks and wanes in clientele. I do have confidence that this issue will be resolved. A few times in the beginning I'd arrived late in the day asking for a mojito and they were out of mint - but one of those days, the market was still open so a staff member went out to get mint so that they could make my mojito!... and strangely they have not been out of fresh mint since then. With that great service attitude and friendly smiles from all staff I am sure they will meet the challenges of their growing pains and resolve them equally quickly. The pizza itself - YUM! First of all I prefer "authentic" pizza and their margherita pizza with bufalo mozzarella and fresh basil was excellent. However my new pizza fave is their mushroom pizza (Creamy Garlic base topped with Shiitake, Crimini and Portobello Mushrooms, Mozzarella drizzled with White Truffle Oiland Garnished with Fresh Chives and Shaved Parmigiano) which is just as tasty as it sounds. Otherwise the only other food I've tried is the meatballs again excellent quality, nothing here disappoints. As summer evenings are lingering on this September, just warm enough to forego sweaters and long pants, my husband and I decided to give this brand new pizzeria a try. It was a bit of a risk going on a Friday night around 7pm. Not only is the Byward Market always busy on weekends but it surely was going to be insanely busy on this most spectacular September evening. To boot, Il Vicolo had just, just opened their doors the night before with a grand opening event. In light of this, maybe we should have given this brand new spot a fair chance to work out their kinks while tending to a hoard of diners? Well at any rate, we went and were lucky to find a seat right away, even at 7ish. It quickly filled up as soon as we got there, maybe too quickly because that is when things started to slow down. For hubby and I, it was not a huge deal: we were enjoying a beautiful evening on an outdoor terrace and an extra long cocktail hour was welcomed. I don't think this relaxed attitude was shared by all: a family next to us, who looked like tourists, couldn't have possibly enjoyed the wait. Their 2 children, both under the age of 6, were hungry and tired and the 45+ minute wait time must have seemed like an eternity. So it may be that the first few reviews will complain about the long wait for food which is fair enough: we did wait way too long. However, seeing this place is just starting out, I think it may be wise to be a bit indulgent and give them a fair chance to figure out the rhythm. The staff was super friendly and the concept is pretty nifty: an outdoor pizzeria (yeah, in Canada go figure) that hopes to remain an outdoorsy place even in the thick of winter with fire pits. They also plan to offer a small enclosed area, to keep diners warm. All in all, wait time pushed aside, our dinner was lovely: thin crust pizza done well, chewy and topped with really good stuff. The wood burning oven, a beauty that majestically stands in the middle of the kitchen area, has been imported from Italy. The pizza sauce is delish and not sweet at all (am I the only one who dislikes sweet pizza sauces?). We shared a bowl of meatballs marinara as our appetizer which were also extremely good. It's a simple menu without pretentions and it works great. If I had one negative comment to make is the price of the pizzas: they err on the pricey end of the spectrum... Wine selection could easily be upgraded but I enjoyed my Ontario VQA Sauvignon Blanc. A good selection of microbrews and a full bar rail. I plan on going back. read more

Went to this place to meet some friends for dinner and drinks last night. We waited 45 minutes to get our drink order..... which was just a round of beer for everyone. When we ordered I asked for the gorgonzola walnut salad and was told because the kitchen was backed up that they would no longer being doing salads for the night. I told the waitress that was unfortunate because all I wanted was a salad. As I was looking for something else to order she said "well I will tell the kitchen you insisted then." We waited another hour for our food to come out after we ordered.... it was okay. Nothing special. This is an outdoor restaurant and due to the wait time being so long for service the sun set and there was not enough lighting. The people next to us had to use the light from their phones to order.
