When I imagine an Italian restaurant, I imagine a warm and inviting place with atmosphere and warm service. This place felt like a corporate Italian restaraunt that lacked the aforementioned. I ordered the chicken parm and the chicken was as thin as paper and pasta side was minimal. I think for the price, you could go and get better portions -- flavor was also forgettable. Our waitress came by at the end of our meal and didn't engage at any point prior, even though it took 15+ minutes to get our drinks. Odd. Overall, it felt cold and uninspired in this establishment and I think if you are going to spend money on an Italian restaurant in DC, there are better atmospheric places. Let me start off by saying the food and the service was good. My problem is with a message on their menu with a claim that there is a 20 percent service charge which they say is to supplement the wages of the waitstaff. Then when I received the bill it says the 20 percent service fee will be used to cover our increasing operational costs. A bit different than the notice on the menu. I asked for the person in charge and this gentleman was very nice. I asked if he could remove the charge and that I will tip the water directly at least 20 percent. He gave me a very weak explanation of Initiative 82, but he was not really informed about the nuance of that decree. He said he did not have the authority to reduce the charge.. So I paid the bill and left another ten percent for the waiter. I will never go back there again and I hope their waitstaff finds better jobs. read more

I visited with family for brunch and bottomless mimosas. The dining room was cozy and still had some holiday decor in place, giving it a nice touch. The food was good and there were decent choices with the prix fixe option. We had calamari (excellent), Caesar salads, and a beet salad. As entrees we had the smoked salmon Benedict, shakshuka, and tiramisu French toast. As much as the staff were tremendously nice, our service overall was a bit slow. Delicious Italian restaurant tucked away in McPherson Square. The ample outdoor seating is truly a hidden gem and the planters provide a private, serene ambiance away from the bustling downtown. The Gnocchi was scrumptious with pillowy soft pasta smothered in a ragu tomato sauce of mushrooms and onions. Enjoyed every last bite! The cakey Tiramisu was quite tasty and not too sweet and a perfect ending to a great meal! The Seasonal Sangria was white wine and refreshing. Brunch at Il Piatto is a steal, check it out! I did the bottomless brunch menu option on a Saturday morning. I started with the Arancini (8.75/10). They're fried risotto balls stuffed with mozzarella, mushrooms, and truffle oil; served with a tomato-cream sauce. So yummy, perfectly crisp and the sauce it came with complemented the flavors so well. Not overpowering, great balance of flavors. The only reason I didn't give it 10/10 was because I didn't taste too much of the mushrooms, but it was still a great starter and I'd def get it again. For my main I got the Italian Eggs Benedict that's served with home fries (7/10). Nothing out of the ordinary, your standard eggs benedict with a twist since it's prosciutto vs ham. I will say the home fries were well seasoned and crispy -- which I loved! For dessert I got the Vanilla Panna Cotta (5/10). I'm a big fan of panna cotta and this didn't really live up to what panna cotta should be. It tasted more like a firm pudding, maybe even a mousse. Panna cotta usually has a more silky, gelatin kind of texture. I didn't end up finishing it because the textures and flavors didn't blend well. *Not Pictured: A delicious Tiramisu French Toast I would 100% get again and bottomless mimosas that come in different flavors. Prior context: used to work back of house in a restaurant; reserved a table for bottomless brunch To start, 1 of the front doors out of the 4 actually opens. The place is entirely empty for Sunday brunch and probably for good reason. My server was amazing and took all of our orders entirely correctly, repeating back items as he wrote them down. I ordered the lox Benedict but instead I was given the regular with prosciutto. Ate it anyway bc I didn't want to waste the food. Then I got pretty sick about halfway through my meal, and purged everything back up. I have eaten this dish multiple times and am not allergic to anything. I had a peach mimosa and a pina colada mimosa, but I know my tolerance to be heavier, and I was not experiencing hardly any impairment, so I have personally ruled out the alcohol. Manager told me that they are not responsible for *food poisoning* that happens at the restaurant because it takes hours for you to get food poisoning from food. He did not seem willing to listen to my argument so I left the establishment. Unbearably hot and unreasonably expensive -- disappointing experience I brought a colleague here for dinner and was incredibly disappointed. The restaurant's air conditioning was broken, and it was nearly 90 degrees outside. Our server told us the AC had been out for a week -- yet there was no warning when we booked or arrived. We ended up sweating through the meal in a stifling environment that honestly made it hard to enjoy anything. Then came the bill: a 20% "service charge" was automatically added, and when I asked if that was the tip, the server said no -- that gratuity was expected on top of that. I was told this policy is "mentioned on the website," but I don't think it's fair to expect diners to scour fine print before deciding where to eat. In the end, I was expected to pay 30-40% above the actual cost of our food, despite the poor dining conditions. It felt excessive, unclear, and frankly exploitative. BLUF: a decent Italian meal downtown, but a bit overpriced for what you get, and there are better, similar options nearby. We tried pappardelle bologense, gnocchi, and arancini. All were good and tasted fresh, but the flavors are not likely to blow you away. Gnocchi was our fave. I tried an old fashioned, a good benchmark cocktail. It hit the spot, but it was too sweet with a cherry juice flavor to be considered top notch. However, the service was very slow. It took a long while just to get menus, and they didn't refill our water unless we asked (which we did numerous times). Also, minus bonus points because our bill came with $31 worth of food we didn't order. They were quick to remove the charges, but watch closely. Overall, with tip it came to $133 for two, which is not an outrageous price, but my recommendation - go to Filomena, which is similarly priced for much better food, more striking atmosphere, larger portions, and better drinks. read more

So worth for Bottomless Brunch! Three course and then bottomless mimosas for two hours and loved it all! The arancini was tasty with the sauce and had a nice crunch. Tiramisu french toast is fluffy and has the tiramisu taste done well. It gets a little much after eating over half of the two slices in my opinion in terms of sweetness, but still good. The lemon panna cotta was also great, light and not too sweet. They also give out some bread to start off with, alongside some olive oil. Despite the restaurant being mostly empty, our service during the meal was slow and our server less than attentive. Much of the meal our server was chatting at the bar with other staff while my water glass sat empty. Therefore, I was not thrilled that the restaurant automatically added a 20% gratuity to my bill since I did not feel that I received good service. The food and drinks were excellent. My friend was fine with canceling it, but one of the managers insisted that we try it so she brought it to us at no charge. I can't even think of the words to describe that French toast. It was just decadent. Sweet delish-ness. It should really be offered as a dessert. That's how much of a treat it was. Get it. For the actual dessert I opted for the mango sorbet since the other option was chocolate mousse and chocolate is not my jam. The sorbet was also good. At this time another manager named José came out to greet us. After hearing it was my birthday he insisted on bringing me his favorite dessert. It was crème brûlée cheesecake and it was delicious. I came for Sunday lunch and it was relatively busy. Despite it being busy, service was good and we received all of our drinks and food very quickly. As for food, the arancini app was good, however, definitely not worth the price for the portion size. We only got two balls for $13 which is honestly a little crazy. Both pastas we ordered were also not bad, but we felt that we've had better for a lower price. Overall, service is good here, but the food is just meh.
