This restaurant already adds a 20 percent service charge which is shameful. I would be ok with a service charge but not 20 percent. Then this server tried crossing out how "tips are not expected " to take advantage of the customer to over tip. Beware. I will not be going to this restaurant ever. read more

Il Piatto - Server crossed out "tips are not expected" to get customer to overtip - Italian Near Me - Washington, DC, District of Columbia

I've been to Il Piatto multiple times and my experiences have always varied. It used to be a solid place for bottomless brunch since it was a good deal compared to other places ($25 in spring 2023 to $40 in winter 2024). Now, there's nothing that differentiates it from other popular restaurants. Sometimes there'll be 12 flavors for mimosas, others there'll only be 3. Sometimes servers are attentive and keep your glass filled, other times they leave a pitcher at your table and don't return for a while. The food is good, again nothing great (calamari was crispy and flavorful, Italian shakshuka lacked depth of flavor, chocolate mousse tart was definitely kept in the fridge for a while because the shell was hard/stale-tasting). Il Piatto is fine for bottomless brunch, but it wouldn't be my first choice. read more

While the food was fine, the fact that they add 20% service charge to all bills was off-putting. When I inquired with the server, I was told he only sees about 2% of that charge, making us feel compelled to give an additional amount to him for a tip. The food was pretty good, though service was slow despite what appeared to be plenty of staff and not many patrons in the restaurant. When it came time to finish up, a woman came to the table to clear plates and asked if we would like our food wrapped. I said just wrap mine, not my husband's. A while later, I see that same woman hanging around with my leftovers nowhere in sight. When our waiter comes back the table and asks if everything is ok, I said I'm not sure as she never came back with my leftovers. He goes to check and sure enough, they were thrown away. He blames language barrier. So now we have to wait for them to re-make my dish, which I really didn't need and tried to say that. They should have just offered to discount that entree. So, that was annoying and time consuming to sit and wait when we wanted to go. Entrees were good (pappardelle bolognese and chicken parm) and so was the bread. It was nice and crispy. Beet salad was unusual, but nothing to brag about. Probably wouldn't return. read more

The brunch was great and our service was great but very unhappy with the policy. There is a 20% service fee BUT that's not the servers tip. They only get 2% of that. We added an addition tip cause our server was great but this is a messed up policy and we won't be coming again read more

Excellent food and service. Great for a quick business lunch (the express lunch is a good deal with great options) or for a nice dinner (went before a show at the Kennedy Center and another time for a dinner date). The carbonara is the BEST, as is the chicken Parmesan. My only complaint is the garlic bread-- not the best. But other than that, you can't go wrong! read more

I went here with a friend before an event at DAR. Lovely space that looks very upscale. I had the mushroom risotto which was excellent and a much larger portion that I expected. It was very rich though so the portion size made it difficult to finish all. My friend had the chicken parm which she said was excellent. All in all a good choice to visit if you're in the area. read more

I visited a couple of times for brunch and for dinner. The servers are always pleasant and the food is tasty. In fact, the cocktails are superb. They make the best martinis. The portions are nice and not too large and the ambiance is rustic. read more

Great brunch deal. 3 course meal and bottomless mimosas for $35. That's a win in itself. Food-all in all everything needed more seasoning. Each item was well prepared but lacked a bit of flavor. Drinks- the mimosas were flowing and there were so many variations you could choose. Service- Arturo took great care of us. He was attentive and friendly. Vibes- indoor was classy and simply decorated and the outdoor patio where we sat feels like you're not in Black Lives Matter plaza in the middle of DC, nice little oasis. read more

Was looking for something close to the hotel and not too expensive. Found Il Piatto on Yelp and decided to give it a try. Able to walk in at 7:30 pm on a weeknight and get seated immediately. Looked to be a little more than half full but had a good amount of energy. We were seated in an area around other diners but tables were arranged to provide customers with space. Started with the meatballs appetizer on the recommendation of the waiter. Was very good and we dipped the bread in the sauce as he recommended. I then proceeded to have a Caesar salad that was just about right on dressing coverage. I had the Eggplant Parmesan with linguine. Was excellent. Just the right mix of breading, cheese and eggplant. It was a very generous portion and I didn't need my salad to start with. Service was attentive and friendly and the entire meal for two was moderately priced. I would definitely recommend based on my experience as a first time diner. read more

Added this to my list of best places for DC Brunch. Brunch Special: Bottomless brunch is available on Saturday and Sundays from 11 am to 3 pm. Indulge in a 3 course menu and bottomless mimosas for $34.95. A 20% service charge will be added to your bill. *whole table must participate and 2 hour time limit* The ambiance is so incredible whether you select outdoor patio or standard inside seating. It looks classy, and in close proximity to the White House. Perfect location for tourists to come for brunch and then explore the area right after. The service is good. They check on you frequently and are generous with filling up the mimosas when low. The food is good, their appetizer and dessert courses are my favorite. The calamari is excellent, and the French toast is just OK. I'm a French toast enthusiast, and they should consider using a broiche or baguette instead. I've been here twice already within a 6 week period (with a party of 6 and another time with a party size of 2) and I can't wait to return. So yummy! What a good vibe! read more

Delicious Italian restaurant tucked away in McPherson Square. The ample outdoor seating is truly a hidden gem and the planters provide a private, serene ambiance away from the bustling downtown. The Gnocchi was scrumptious with pillowy soft pasta smothered in a ragu tomato sauce of mushrooms and onions. Enjoyed every last bite! The cakey Tiramisu was quite tasty and not too sweet and a perfect ending to a great meal! The Seasonal Sangria was white wine and refreshing. It was easy to make a reservation for a group of 6 for outdoor dining. Indoor seating looked very posh. Through our dinner course, I noticed all the tables filling up and I can see why! Great spot for date night, families, and groups! read more

When I imagine an Italian restaurant, I imagine a warm and inviting place with atmosphere and warm service. This place felt like a corporate Italian restaraunt that lacked the aforementioned. I ordered the chicken parm and the chicken was as thin as paper and pasta side was minimal. I think for the price, you could go and get better portions -- flavor was also forgettable. Our waitress came by at the end of our meal and didn't engage at any point prior, even though it took 15+ minutes to get our drinks. Odd. Overall, it felt cold and uninspired in this establishment and I think if you are going to spend money on an Italian restaurant in DC, there are better atmospheric places. Nothing memorable at all. read more

Nice ambience, it felt somewhat classy without being too formal. Really enjoyed the seafood paste, although the portion size wasn't the biggest. Service was a bit spotty, often our waiter was busy doing other things and took a while to get his attention. A bit pricey for the experience and they charge an automatic 20% minimum service fee. read more

Would come back again for the seafood pasta. I came here for brunch and ordered the seafood pasta. It had a mild seafood taste (obviously because it has seafood, but it had a stronger taste that reminds you of the ocean?) but I didn't mind it. The pasta sauce was flavorful and the seafood was cooked well. It was an overall tasty dish. The service was good, my water was never empty, and the staff was very patient. read more

Let me start off by saying the food and the service was good. My problem is with a message on their menu with a claim that there is a 20 percent service charge which they say is to supplement the wages of the waitstaff. Then when I received the bill it says the 20 percent service fee will be used to cover our increasing operational costs. A bit different than the notice on the menu. I asked for the person in charge and this gentleman was very nice. I asked if he could remove the charge and that I will tip the water directly at least 20 percent. He gave me a very weak explanation of Initiative 82, but he was not really informed about the nuance of that decree. He said he did not have the authority to reduce the charge.. So I paid the bill and left another ten percent for the waiter. I will never go back there again and I hope their waitstaff finds better jobs. read more

I visited with family for brunch and bottomless mimosas. The dining room was cozy and still had some holiday decor in place, giving it a nice touch. The food was good and there were decent choices with the prix fixe option. We had calamari (excellent), Caesar salads, and a beet salad. As entrees we had the smoked salmon Benedict, shakshuka, and tiramisu French toast. As much as the staff were tremendously nice, our service overall was a bit slow. Dessert was probably the best course with a chocolate mousse, panna cotta, and ice cream. I probably wouldn't return for brunch but definitely want to try them out for dinner. read more

Amazing! I went here for Saturday brunch and it was phenomenal. The food was delicious with great portions. The drinks were flowing and mimosas great. Our server and the staff were caring. The ambiance was great brunch. There wasn't music playing but it wasn't that type of restaurant which is fine. I will be coming back! Bottomless mimosa brunch $40 Like the variety in their pre-fixe menu, and the $40 feels worth it. I did get regular french toast instead of tiramisu :(( (actually, i think i did but idk what makes it tiramisu it's just regular) but overall really good. The mimosas could have been a little more bottomless but this is a classic brunch spot with good food. read more

Prior context: used to work back of house in a restaurant; reserved a table for bottomless brunch To start, 1 of the front doors out of the 4 actually opens. The place is entirely empty for Sunday brunch and probably for good reason. My server was amazing and took all of our orders entirely correctly, repeating back items as he wrote them down. I ordered the lox Benedict but instead I was given the regular with prosciutto. Ate it anyway bc I didn't want to waste the food. Then I got pretty sick about halfway through my meal, and purged everything back up. I have eaten this dish multiple times and am not allergic to anything. I had a peach mimosa and a pina colada mimosa, but I know my tolerance to be heavier, and I was not experiencing hardly any impairment, so I have personally ruled out the alcohol. Manager told me that they are not responsible for *food poisoning* that happens at the restaurant because it takes hours for you to get food poisoning from food. He did not seem willing to listen to my argument so I left the establishment. They also don't have any tums or alka seltzer on hand, whereas mine had some on hand just in case (this bit is not required by a code or anything but I feel like it speaks to their unpreparedness for helping their paying customers when in need) P.S the tab was paid in full and it was one of our party members' birthday DO NOT GO HERE read more

BLUF: a decent Italian meal downtown, but a bit overpriced for what you get, and there are better, similar options nearby. We tried pappardelle bologense, gnocchi, and arancini. All were good and tasted fresh, but the flavors are not likely to blow you away. Gnocchi was our fave. I tried an old fashioned, a good benchmark cocktail. It hit the spot, but it was too sweet with a cherry juice flavor to be considered top notch. However, the service was very slow. It took a long while just to get menus, and they didn't refill our water unless we asked (which we did numerous times). Also, minus bonus points because our bill came with $31 worth of food we didn't order. They were quick to remove the charges, but watch closely. Overall, with tip it came to $133 for two, which is not an outrageous price, but my recommendation - go to Filomena, which is similarly priced for much better food, more striking atmosphere, larger portions, and better drinks. read more

Brunch at Il Piatto is a steal, check it out! I did the bottomless brunch menu option on a Saturday morning. I started with the Arancini (8.75/10). They're fried risotto balls stuffed with mozzarella, mushrooms, and truffle oil; served with a tomato-cream sauce. So yummy, perfectly crisp and the sauce it came with complemented the flavors so well. Not overpowering, great balance of flavors. The only reason I didn't give it 10/10 was because I didn't taste too much of the mushrooms, but it was still a great starter and I'd def get it again. For my main I got the Italian Eggs Benedict that's served with home fries (7/10). Nothing out of the ordinary, your standard eggs benedict with a twist since it's prosciutto vs ham. I will say the home fries were well seasoned and crispy -- which I loved! For dessert I got the Vanilla Panna Cotta (5/10). I'm a big fan of panna cotta and this didn't really live up to what panna cotta should be. It tasted more like a firm pudding, maybe even a mousse. Panna cotta usually has a more silky, gelatin kind of texture. I didn't end up finishing it because the textures and flavors didn't blend well. *Not Pictured: A delicious Tiramisu French Toast I would 100% get again and bottomless mimosas that come in different flavors. Our options (aside from standard orange) were strawberry, passion fruit, blood orange and piña colada. The passion fruit mimosa was the best one. read more

So worth for Bottomless Brunch! Three course and then bottomless mimosas for two hours and loved it all! The arancini was tasty with the sauce and had a nice crunch. Tiramisu french toast is fluffy and has the tiramisu taste done well. It gets a little much after eating over half of the two slices in my opinion in terms of sweetness, but still good. The lemon panna cotta was also great, light and not too sweet. They also give out some bread to start off with, alongside some olive oil. Mimosas were great and there were a lot of flavours: -Lychee - 9/10 -Dragonfruit - 6/10 -Blood Orange - 9/10 -Blackberry - 5/10 -Kiwi - 3/10 Other flavours: -Pomengranate -Apricot -Classic -Raspberry Staff were nice. This was our first meal in Washington, D.C. The restaurant was lovely, especially with all of the cheerful holiday decorations. Despite the restaurant being mostly empty, our service during the meal was slow and our server less than attentive. Much of the meal our server was chatting at the bar with other staff while my water glass sat empty. Therefore, I was not thrilled that the restaurant automatically added a 20% gratuity to my bill since I did not feel that I received good service. The food and drinks were excellent. I ordered the Il Piatto salad, and it was delicious. I loved that the smoked salmon was on the bottom, because then I could get a piece of it with every bite. The Italian Limoncello Martini was tart, sweet, and delicious. The Limoncello sorbet was smooth and tart. Everyone else in my group also enjoyed their food and beverages. The cheesecake garnered rave reviews. The food quality makes this restaurant worth trying and long as you feel like being patient. read more

My friends and I came here for Sunday Brunch. We got to indulge in their "bottomless brunch" which included a prix-fixe menu of food items to choose from, and a never ending mimosa binge for $39.95 Their mimosa flavors included, original orange, dragonfruit, mango and pineapple??? I might be making that last flavor up but the Original Orange flavor was our go to. The flavored mimosas just tasted like Prosecco with a dash of color lol, if you're into that; def go for one of those. [Food: 4 of 5] --appetizers// -Calamari Fritti: super crispy, the sauce was delicious -2x Arancini: i love anything risotto so this was my fav dish from brunch, i wish the truffle oil seeped through more but it was still amazing nonetheless -Polpette: i am not a big fan of meatballs, but these were super juicy and paired well with their tomato sauce --Piatto Principale (entree)// -Smoked Salmon Eggs Benedict : not my fav but wasn't too bad -3x Rigatoni Alla Panna : ..I don't know why the 3 of us ordered the same thing ..LOL. I wish the truffle oil was strong, we barely could tell that this dish was supposed to have truffle oil in it. --Dessert// -Limencello Panna Cotta : honestly, I cant remember what it tasted like but I know that 2 of my friends liked this dessert the most. -Chocolate Mousse : i love chocolate anything so this was a win for me -Raspberry Sorbet : the sorbet tasted so good with the mimosa, we kept taking a bite then sipping it with our drinks. [Service: 5 of 5] They constantly had servers and bussers stopping by to check in on us and/or to pick up dirty plates off our table. Our server was great, I wish I remembered his name.. but he stopped by often and made sure to keep our mimosa glasses full (insert thumbs up emoji)! [Ambiance] The place was quite small (from what I could tell, from where we were seated) - we saw a lot of different occasions happening that morning, Birthdays, Dates, Business Meetings, Gift Exchanges; Il Piatto is a great place to enjoy a drink (or 2..or 3) with your friends, family or colleague. I wanted to try a new Italian restaurant in DC. The reviews looked good so I gave it a try. It's located right on Black Lives Matter plaza. Love the ambiance. A dim old world vibe. Cigars and strong drinks. It's very elegant on the inside. The service was slow but there were a number of workers around. My food was tasty. My friends opted for the short ribs. Unbearably hot and unreasonably expensive -- disappointing experience I brought a colleague here for dinner and was incredibly disappointed. The restaurant's air conditioning was broken, and it was nearly 90 degrees outside. Our server told us the AC had been out for a week -- yet there was no warning when we booked or arrived. We ended up sweating through the meal in a stifling environment that honestly made it hard to enjoy anything. Then came the bill: a 20% "service charge" was automatically added, and when I asked if that was the tip, the server said no -- that gratuity was expected on top of that. I was told this policy is "mentioned on the website," but I don't think it's fair to expect diners to scour fine print before deciding where to eat. In the end, I was expected to pay 30-40% above the actual cost of our food, despite the poor dining conditions. It felt excessive, unclear, and frankly exploitative. The pasta was good but not worth $50. I hope management seriously rethinks both their comfort standards and pricing transparency, because this is not how you treat paying customers. read more

Busy on a rainy Saturday that's a good sign. Sitting at the bar is nice but bring a suitcase of patience as service can be slow. Despite sitting at the bar, the man behind it spent most of his time ignoring us, making ordering quite exasperating. The food we ok, but overpriced, even for DC. They now add a 20% surcharge to boot. Our visit was in Sept 2023. Location is great. read more

Love love love the food, drinks, vibe, and service at this restaurant. Unfortunately, they tack on a 20% "service charge" and make a point to say it's not a tip. They say it is to cover operating costs, and although an additional tip on top of that is not required, it is highly encouraged based off how how the server underlined it on our check receipt AFTER we paid. Based off of other reviews, there is no way to drop this fee and instead tip the server 20% directly. I hope the extra ghost fee we paid actually ends up going to the server. read more
