If you find yourself in the area, or with time to kill before a flight, I can't recommend that you come here enough. Il Castigo is a short drive from Malpensa, in super cute Somma Lombardo, and located in a castle! You heard me, a castle! We had a layover, and ended up renting a car and driving around the area. We turned to Yelp since it was almost dinner time, and ended up having an amazing meal and night. The atmosphere is great, service was friendly, and the pasta was some of the best we've ever had. As an added bonus, there was also a street food festival happening right outside, and Il Castigo was participating. While hanging out front, one of the servers gave us calamari samples while we soaked in the scene. Now, this place is situated across a beautiful castle about a 10 minute drive from terminal 2 of MXP airport. It can be VERY hard to find a taxi back and here is where my story begins. After our wonder dinner (which I will describe afterward), my family and I realized that it was near impossible to call a taxi back. The issue was that we did not have any euros left on us either. The owner, who was SO kind, called us a cab at first before realizing it was (1) really expensive and (2) we only had credit cards. He took it upon himself to drive us back to our hotel and treated us SO kindly. I have never seen this kind of genuine hospitality and we were truly grateful for his kindness. Beyond the service, the restaurant was also amazing. From the atmosphere to the food, this restaurant had it all. Il castigo is situated right across a beautiful castle. When you dine here, you get that amazing view and it just feels so nice to be in Italy soaking it all in. There are English menus, but as the other reviews suggested, this place is very authentic!!!!! The waitress was very nice and recommended us dishes. Each of her recommendations, without fail, were delicious. I would HIGHLY recommend the octopus starter and the salmon steak. The chocolate cheese cake was also SO DELICIOUS. This ristorante is situated in a castle. Dining inside, you're surrounded by brick walls or you can choose outside under the wide umbrellas. The mussels were a hefty portion and my favorite was the fresh seafood pasta. The sauce was delicious and the dish was loaded with shrimp, clams and calamari. What a great place! We went there on a hunch and it turned out to be a jem! Service was very friendly and helpful. My Italian is nonexistent but the waitress translated everything patiently with a smile. The atmosphere has a very warm and casual ambience. Now the food, it was everything I would expect in a fine Italian restaurant back in the US....except better. Better in taste, presentation, and value. The appetizers of mussels and scallops were outstanding with such lovely sauce that my mouth is watering now as I type this. The primi and second dishes were so phenomenally unique and yet balanced that I wanted more. The gelato dessert was just the right touch to finish off a fine dinner. We enjoyed our experience so much that we went back the next night. This is after an 8 hour day at the airport after a flight delay and eventually cancellation, without hesitation, we went right back. Whatever you go, GO HERE! Thanks to an airline issue, I ended up stuck in Malpensa. While initially upset, it turned out to be the best thing that could have ever happened. I stumbled upon this restaurant and had the best meal of my life. No exaggeration. It was so good I came back the next day and ordered what the guys at the table next to me had the night before. Make sure you get the octopus starter. For my entrée I had the dish that was in a parmesan waffle (which is not what it was, but what it was called on the English menu - think waffle cone for ice cream). The pasta was homemade, and whatever type of meat was in the dish was mouthwateringly good, along with the sauce. Everything was mouthwateringly good. The next night I had the burrata, which was also excellent, but nothing compared to that octopus, which is what I'll be judging all future octopi by. The owner was super friendly. If you or anyone you know goes to Malpensa, absolutely visit this restaurant. I spent two weeks in Italy after that and ate lots of excellent food in Tuscany and Umbria, but nothing was as good as that octopus and whatever dish I had as my main course. And drink whatever wine the server recommends, with each course. Seriously, let them pick. It ends up being one of those things where the wine makes the food taste better and the food makes the wine taste better, so everything progressively gets better and better as you go along. They are going to pick based on an effective pairing, not based on what is most expensive (also I think everything is 4 or 5 euros a glass, which is way cheaper than it would be in any US city) Also, totally walkable from the Hilton Garden Inn, regardless of what people might have you think. read more

Coming back into Milan, we booked an airport hotel near Malpensa (MXP). It was the most pleasant surprise to find we were staying in the bedroom community of Somma Lombardo (about 5 miles from MXP). This restaurant was within walking distance from our hotel, and we arrived just after they opened (7ish), to find the outdoor seating completely full. We opted to sit indoors, and within 20 minutes, the indoor dining area was full as well. They have wine "on tap", which we didn't much care for, but between us -with our lack of decent Italian, and the owner - with his grasp on basic English, we found an excellent bottle of a local red for ~€25. This restaurant staff is the most hospitable and attentive I think I've ever encountered. They made sure we had just what we wanted and that we were pleased with all aspects of the evening. There was a local band setting up to play American Blues and early Rock 'n Roll. They sounded pretty good. We talked with some of the others dining there and found they'd been to Clarksdale, MS! How interesting that the Delta music of the States has this Italian following. Loved this place. Highly recommend the elephant ear pork chop and the grilled swordfish! read more

Love, love, love this place! We had one night, and one dining choice, in the Milan area, and since this place received positive reviews and was close to the airport, the choice was made. Everything was marvelous from beginning to end. When you walk in, you get the vibe that it's very much a local spot, and very little English is spoken; however, that added to the authenticity of the place. The owner himself was serving dinner and interacting with us throughout the night, which concluded with an offer of Lemon Cello shots...delicious. The food itself was second to none, and reflecting back on our tip to Europe, I can easily say that this was the best, most authentic food that I had along the way. Stumbled across this restaurant as a very hungry tourist staying nearby. Found it by happenstance and was SO glad that I did. We were able to get a table with no reservation on a Friday night, and were given wonderful and personal treatment. The owner and servers made deliberate effort to make us feel welcomed and comfortable despite language barriers. And the food...oh lordy the food was delicious. We got the arancini appetizer and seafood pasta entrees and chicken Milanese, both from the specialities portion of the menu. Everything was mouthwateringly delicious and homey, and we finished with a delicious espresso and pear and ricotta dessert. My group ended up loving this place so much that we went back for seconds on the return leg of our trip. On the last night of our week trip to Italy I found this wonderful restaurant on Yelp. Our experience there turned out to be a highlight of our already terrific trip. We asked for appetizer suggestions and owner Tony recommended two - the octopus and a classic prosciutto and cheese plate. The octopus (which I almost never order because it is usually overcooked) was terrific. It was served on a vegetable puree and the dish was perfectly cooked. In the other app, the prosciutto practically melted in your mouth. The three of us then shared two other dishes, including the seafood pasta pillows. Very light and delicious. We were very happy! Next we had two desserts, my favorite was the chocolate ball. I don't recall the real name of it, and I can't do it justice, just ask Tony for the best dish for a chocolate lover and you will be VERY pleased. As you can tell, we loved the food. The setting is also very charming. And the service was excellent. Do yourself a favor and go. It is very close to the Milan Malpesa airport so you can easily plan to stop on your way into or out of Milan. And, if you have time, make a reservation, because it would be a darn shame to get here and find out they can't accommodate you because they are full. I consider myself a foodie and this place was great. We had a 5 star evening! read more
