Ialways received great service here. We have made several purchases over the last 5 years up to an including a 50 inch cut Toro Zero turn mower. Everyone I've spoken with there has been helpful, they unload my equipment and reload when we pick up, pricing is reasonable and I always feel I get what I paid for. My lawn mower wasn't working right. I called the shop and they said to bring it in for them to take a look at it. Brought it in 30 minutes after calling. The guy said that if we wanted them to look at it just know the turn around is about 4 weeks. Not sure why they couldn't have said that on the phone to save me a trip. I went in to the shop hoping one of the guys would help me with the ONE piece my Echo weed eater was missing. Instead the service guy started telling me "supposedly" all the things my weed eater was needing fix. So since I do not know much about parts etc.. I put my trust in this company to fix my weed eater. So I leave my weed eater to get taking care of and instead of them fixing it they pulled it apart and called me to tell me sorry they couldn't fix. So I pick up my weed eater all pulled apart (didn't even returned it they way I brought it to them) and charge me for a service they didn't even do. If there was a way for me to give this business a ZERO star I would. I recommend that if you are a women that has no idea about the fixing of a weed eater, lawnmower etc. DO NOT go to them!!! They will take advantage of you and charger for something you have no idea. Management I would love for you to make the things right and at least put my weed eater and the pieces they took from it back how I brought it in that day. read more

Went in based on their longstanding reputation in the community and an effective repair many years ago on a very old Craftsman mower. I was looking for a real piece of machinery - vs my current Sears plastic geared 21". Ike's* grand daughter greeted me and started by asking about my wants (metal drive train) and then she asked about my needs (how big a yard, hilly, etc.). After a bit she handed me off to her Dad (David, Ike's son) and we got a bit more technical. We ended up on a Toro in my price range and then the education started. it was a Saturday morning and the place was pretty busy but they spent the extra time with me to educate me on how the rear wheel drive would be better on my hills and how to engage the drive with the super spiffy sliding drive "throttle". David pointed out how to properly pull back on the mower too. Then he educated me on proper care of the mower. Details about how long to keep gas (and how), and different ways for me to change the oil. Basically, making sure if I do my job, his technicians won't have to do theirs!. The price was about the same as the big box stores - but for a much better built piece of equipment. When I came back to pick up the mower David taking the time to educate another customer concerning chain saw operation and maintenance. The place was hoping, I was greeted and asked to wait while they finished up with another customer. In a few minutes a quick "what are you here for?" resulted in one of the other staff coming up, getting my pick up info and then rolling the mower up to the car and helping me load it in. I'm sorry about the other reviewer's have a bad time, as I indicated above I had no problem with service in the past. Finally - I unloaded the mower, flipped down the handle to a comfortable height (they have 3 mowing positions) and went to work. The Toro FLOATED up and down my hills and around trees. It was more of me directing it vs my PUSHING it. This unit is amazing - everything they said and a wee bit more. * Ike passed away some years ago, David and his family are running the place along with about 12 staff. read more

Okay, raising the rating to three stars after speaking with Ike's owner, who has some stout conciliatory skills. Full disclosure: in my previous review, the fellows idly leaning against the workbench while I struggled with the mower may have been dawdling customers, not employees. Unbeknownst to me at the time, Ike's has dedicated porters to help off-load equipment, which is a civilized business strategy. (Also, my height has changed to 5'1".) All other comments still stand. Perfect experience with Ike's on repair of my lawnmower. Was treated professionally when I called in to inquire about the repair. When I arrived someone immediately helped me and I was offered assistance unloading the mower. The big surprise came when I received a call 3 hours later telling me it was ready. The cost of the repair was reasonable and less than other shops had estimated. Again I was helped immediately and again an employee offered to load it. read more

Even though I'm not a big landscape company, they took care of it very quickly and professionally. First, let me say that even though most of the guys there are not very personable, they do seem to be busy and IF they ever wait on you and you get to ask a question, seem fairly helpful. And one of the men at the front counter is ALWAYS very helpful, answering questions about my existing mower and giving advise on the mowers they have for sale. I had told myself that I'd keep using the current mower through this season and then consider one of their Honda self-propelled mowers next growing season. That said, my last experience there was just that.... my LAST experience there! Two weeks before that, one of the men at the back service counter had given me a quote on a tune-up on my mower and advised me that since they were in the throes of the mowing season it may take several days to get my mower back. No problem, since I'd already hired someone to come the next day to mow my yard. Sooo... almost two weeks later, when I decided it was time to take it in, I realized that I could NOT get it in the trunk of my car without removing the handle, which involved cables, etc. I called to ask about pick-up service, but after being put on hold, no one ever came to the phone. I was still ON the phone (on hold) when I finally drove over there to ask my question. As I figured, all the guys in the back were helping other customers (OR on the computer) and the man I USUALLY talk to at the front counter was not there. I'm fairly sure I recognized his voice 15 minutes earlier when I originally called, but, he was not there by the time I got there. Since NO one in the back ever acknowledged me, I walked up front and the one guy sitting at the front counter looked up, so I asked him about pick-up service. He told me it would be $50. Well, it is what it is and even though I am less than 2 miles away, I'm willing to pay their customary charge... .BUT... when I said, "okay, so the total would be X dollars including pick-up and delivery?" the guy was so rude, saying "he" couldn't do a tune-up for that! I told him that is what I was quoted by the older gentleman in the back, less than two weeks ago! He kept on, listing how much the parts COULD cost, depending on the mower (even though I mentioned a couple of times WHICH mower I had) and that no WAY was "he" going to do a tune-up for that amount! I finally just said, "well, I can see we're getting nowhere here!" and turned to leave, at which time, he went back to being enthralled by whatever was on his computer screen! Just because there aren't many options for small engine service in town, doesn't mean that customer service isn't critical. Needless to say, my next mower won't be bought from a store that has proven to be uninterested in the smaller ticket items, like a tune-up! Too bad... I had purchased several parts from them this season, even though they were a bit (unintentionally) sexist. Took my push mower in that had not been started in about a year. They said it would be about a week. 4 days later they called and said it was done for a price a little below the quote. I picked it up in the rain and the guy climbed into my truck to strap he mowed down for me so I wouldn't have to. read more

The kid they have "working" in parts seems to think he's The Soup Nazi of small engine. Although he was doing nothing while sitting at his post, he seemed to not want to be bothered to help me. My interaction with him lasted less than 20 seconds before I left the business knowing he had no intention of helping me get the part I needed. As I was leaving, an apparent higher-up caught up with me and the first sentence out of his mouth was "So many people leave here angry..." Then he proceeded to give me reasons why. All of them involved what the customers do wrong. I'm thinking if a business has "many people" leaving angry after dealing with a particular employee, ya get rid of that employee! No brainer. Unless of course, he's related to the owner. That would explain alot. What sucks for them is that I am in process of choosing a riding lawn mower and I'd intended to shop their store while I waited for d***less to get my part. [SETTING CONTEXT: This author is a grouchy, old, white, ex-military, married woman; politically incorrect to state this info, but deal with it.] I LOVE working with local businesses who know the value of customer service! This is a skill that seems to be rapidly disappearing these days. At Ike's, customer service is not just an occasional thing they think about, CUSTOMER SERVICE IS A MAJOR ELEMENT OF IKE'S BUSINESS MODEL. I have dealt with David Shumate at Ike's a few times over the past 6-ish years, most memorably to buy a Mother's Day chainsaw for myself! (I'm old enough to realize that if you want something done right... ) and then, just recently, to replace it and some other tools when some LLSSC (Low Life Scum Sucking Dog) felt that they needed my family's tools more than we did. Each time that I have gone into the Ike's sales area to shop (whether it was a chainsaw, a trimmer, fuel treatment, chipper, zero-turn-mower - dreamin' on that last one), Mr. Shumate has been there. And each time, this businessman has been many things: present, attentive, professional, knowledgeable, willing to listen - things I have a hard time finding in big-box stores. More importantly, there were many things David WASN'T: cloying, annoying, distracted, patronizing, or hard-to-find, things that seem to be the norm in large-container facilities (with a very few exceptions). Being an older female, I find it frustrating to shop for "manly" things.The first line of salespeople in the building supply stores are usually recent hires who know little; the next line of "experience" are, (again, with a few, memorable exceptions), often male salespeople, knowledgeable about the equipment, but ignorant that there are females who (without giving up their lady's card) understand how to shred a pasture, swing an axe, fell a tree, and truly can understand the mechanics of small engine tools. (I label all these blessings as lessons in patience and communication.) However, like most people, I continue to shop at these types of places because they have longer hours, a larger collection of item categories under one roof, and, on average, lower prices generally speaking. However, when it comes to landscaping tools that I want to work well for a long time, I go to the place that sells "the good stuff" and people "what know" - Ike's Small Engines. For example, when my main squeeze and I went to replace my chainsaw and his stuff, we got great manufacturer discounts and -more importantly- a lesson on how to save our equipment from this ridiculous corn-crap-in-our-gas federal interference (don't get me started on this...). David explained how to not waste money on treatment, how to cycle our fuel through which tools, (over simplification: corn-crap-gas through mowers being used frequently, pure gas through less frequently used tools), and how to shop for pure fuel. He explained the research that they did in-house to determine/validate this, and the equipment they sacrificed to understand exactly what is best for small engines. If for nothing else, you should go talk with David about this research. The professionalism of this business is not limited to the sales area. I have been to Ike's repair department several times over the years, bringing in the many engine-driven tools belonging to my mother. (Remember the shredding, chopping, and felling? Well, the apple doesn't fall too far from the tree.) There was always someone there to help unload or load. The men behind the counter were confident, efficient, respectful, and clear in setting expectations (didn't over promise or under deliver). The repair personnel would check out the tool, and in cases where it was less expensive to purchase a new widget rather than repair the old, they would tell me. Although they couldn't always fix the problems I brought in, I have never been disappointed with their service. (Full disclosure: sometimes they are not successful in calling with info as quickly as I would like. There have been a couple of cases where I would call to find that they had reached a resolution the week before. To me, who doesn't depend on this for my business, this is only an inconvenience, not a show stopper. If I really had an issue with it, I would call them sooner and more frequently.) My advice to those homeowners who want a good-looking yard and don't want to purchase throw-away landscaping power tools, go to Ike's. Yes, their hours are shorter, their range of products are narrowly focused (you won't find a shovel or hoe here), and their prices are just a little higher than those large stores along the Bypass 6, but you will love the small engine tools they have and you will appreciate the treatment you receive from the owner and employees. read more
