I have three kids that know their way around a computer, one has an Advanced degree in Computer Science. He could not explain over the phone and he lives seven hours away, so I called Tim at Computer Works. Several years ago he had replaced a crashed hard drive and had saved all my documents, music and photos. No glitches. I brought in my laptop and described the issue. He said he should have it ready the next day. But then I asked if it was a good idea to update the Operating system from Win 7 to Win 10? Tim said not necessarily as he flipped it over. He pointed to a Windows 8 sticker. He asked this machine says it came with Win 7? Yep. I told him when I got it Win 8 was just out and was real unstable. My tech guy had recommended going retro to Win 7 until they worked the bugs out. Tim nodded and said yes, I remember that. Tim said he could use the Win 8 license to upgrade all the way to Win 10, no charge for the software. From there, my computer stayed with him all the next next week. He talked with Microsoft engineers and gurus. He spent a lot of time on it. He called to update after two days. He said he was having an issue PE getting it to accept an update, but if I did not need it, he had access to Microsoft's top guys working through it and would like to see if it could be resolved. Well, no success. The Gods at Microsoft said they had created something they could not figure out. Said it was a problem they rarely encountered. They advised that Tim leave it alone at Win 7 if it worked ok. So Tim called me to let me know I could pick it up. I came over right away. He explained in laymen's terms what he had done, who he talked to and spoke of it as a worthy opponent that had whopped him and its creator. I thought this is going to be expensive. But NO! Tim said my original issue with Hard Drive space was an easy fix. The issue with Windows 10 was a challenge and he got to speak to some guys that provided interesting dialogue and problem-solving that would help him in the future. Plus, they encouraged him to keep their contact information. He told me that was a fair exchange for his time, I owed him nothing! People, I was stunned. I thought I should give him a $20 to go out to eat or something, but my dad had always told me that if someone offered you "no charge", you accept it as a gift. To offer anything less than full reimbursement is an insult. I have had my own experience on the giving side and agree with his opinion. When I offer someone my services for free, I do it because it made me feel good. It is especially great to do something for someone and they have no idea who did it. Pay it forward! So I thanked Tim. With the virus thing an issue, I told him ordinarily I would offer a handshake as well. He smiled and said, me too, have a good day. Well Tim, I left there and decided to Pay it forward. I went home and sent flowers to a favorite aunt whose 50 year old son (and one of my favorite cousins) just had a kidney removed because it had cancer in it. I added a gift card for her to buy his family a BBQ dinner at their favorite place. She was so touched, as we he and his family. This aunt always looks after my mom, her older sister. She was due some appreciation. Thanks Tim for the great job on my computer, it works great. Thanks for trying to upgrade the operating system. Thanks for taking care of me and the free pass. Thanks for the spark that made me want to do something nice for someone else. I think there are several people that benefitted from your consideration. If you have an issue with your computer, your network, company software or network, give Tim a call. He has a lot of certificates on the wall that qualify him to be a trusted person with your valuable data or just your photo and music files. In addition he is a thoughtful person with a quick smile.

In talking with Tom I asked him for quote and he gave me a price of $45.To give me a quote without first visiting my location indicated to me that Tom had supreme confidence in his abilities. Over the phone and in person Tom has an upbeat cheerful personality and he made me feel completely at ease. He arrived promptly on time in his hailageek van at 2:00 p.m. Upon sitting down and making a cursory examination he said he could fix the problem in 2 minutes but that he wanted to spend more time and give me a more extensive and complete printer connectivity. I sat beside him as he nimbly did the work - he obviously knew what he was doing. Tom is a founder/partner in HailAGeek which has 17 locations in the Houston area. It was altogether a pleasant experience and I highly recommend HailAGeek. I was impressed that HailAGeek/Tom heard would give me a specific quote over the phone. Other providers I contacted would only quote an hourly rate [ mostly a minimum of $95 ] without asking or going into the specifics of my problem.

Extremely ridiculously pricey and will lie to you…read more I could not find the part I needed in town. Instead of waiting a couple of days for amazon, I just brought it to this place. Because I have been busy with work, family stuff, unscrupulous landlords, and moving and didn't want to bother jacking with it, and left it for them to install. Hey, two people I knew recommended the place, so I thought...why not? It was a pretty easy thing, I told them exactly what they needed to do. Pop the old power supply out, put the new power supply in...viola. The next day, I get a phone call saying, "Hey, we've done the thing. Buuuuttt, we are hearing some noise when your hard drive spins up. Do you want us to clone it and replace it?" i said no, that I'd do that myself if I wanted, that I had never heard any such noise anyway, so no. Hung up. Deal done. An hour later, ANOTHER person calls me and says, "So um...actually, we broke your hard drive by physically breaking the connector to the power supply. So, we're going to replace it for free." Riiiiiight. So what I am getting here is that: A) They broke my hard drive. B) They then LIED to me about my hard drive "making noise" in the hopes that I would take the bait and agree to buy a new one. C) They they realized that I would show up and find out it was broken, and had to offer to pay for it themselves. Not only all of that, but... They charged me a freaking ARM and a LEG for this work. Almost $300 for replacing a $70 part. Even auto mechanics are not this crooked. Sure, I did opt for the "rush" service after being told that their "two-day" service meant that my computer would be back to me in SIX days, but...yeah. But, at least I got a free hard drive out of the deal. (You better believe I demanded my old one back from these incredibly unscrupulous crooks.)
