Extremely Disappointing Product Quality and Unacceptable Customer Service at IKEA Tempe IKEA may offer affordable furniture, but there are plenty of other companies that provide better-quality products and, more importantly, stand behind what they sell. I hadn't shopped at IKEA in years because of previous experiences, and unfortunately, my recent visit reminded me exactly why. My son and his girlfriend recently moved to Arizona and purchased three IKEA EKET cabinets for their living room. All three had significant issues: * Cabinet #1: We were able to assemble it, but the magnetic door closures did not work properly. The doors either wouldn't stay closed or, once closed, wouldn't open. Of note when Darrel, the worst customer service associate I have ever come across, drug this off of the dolly it broke and he said it was broken. * Cabinet #2: One of the pieces arrived chipped. Rather than make a big deal out of a cosmetic defect, we planned to repair it with wood glue and a furniture marker. However, when we attempted to install the door, the entire front section of the bottom panel broke apart. * Cabinet #3: This cabinet couldn't even be assembled because the pieces were not square. The back panel didn't align correctly, causing the sides to repeatedly pop apart. Three identical products, and not one was fully functional. That is a product-quality issue, not a customer assembly issue. I offered to return the cabinets for my son and his girlfriend and took them to the IKEA store in Tempe, Arizona. Unfortunately, the experience with an employee named Darrell was even more disappointing than the products themselves. Darrell was dismissive, rude, and unwilling to provide any meaningful assistance. He would barely make eye contact while speaking to me and informed me that because two of the cabinets were not completely assembled, they could not be refunded. Think about how ridiculous that policy sounds in this situation. We couldn't finish assembling the cabinets because the products were defective, yet IKEA was using their incomplete assembly as the reason to deny a refund. Even more frustrating, the one cabinet that WAS completely assembled was also refused a refund. When Darrell pulled it off the cart, he broke a piece off the bottom and then claimed it was already broken. It was not. We had transported it to the store intact. When I asked what options were available to resolve the situation, Darrell walked away from me. His response was simply, "No options," delivered while looking away and continuing to walk. I wasn't asking for special treatment. I was asking IKEA to take responsibility for three defective products and provide reasonable customer service. Instead, I was treated as though I was the problem. Ultimately, I left all three cabinets in the return area and walked out. I had no desire to continue arguing with an employee who clearly had no interest in helping. The woman helping me did say I wasn't the first to return these. Weird thing is, I returned for no refund, no credit, and no apology for the quality of product and rude employee. Affordable furniture is not a bargain when the products are defective and the company refuses to stand behind them. What bothers me most is that this was a young couple furnishing their first home in Arizona. They spent their money expecting functional furniture, and instead received three defective cabinets and an incredibly disappointing return experience. I will gladly pay two or three times as much elsewhere to purchase furniture from a company that values its customers, provides quality products, and takes responsibility when something goes wrong. I will never shop at IKEA again, and I would strongly encourage others to think twice before purchasing furniture here. IKEA Tempe: Your products were disappointing, but your customer service was far worse.
Maybe I don't understand the concept? Maybe I found the little blue signs really annoying, or the total lack of assistance? Regardless this is my last time visiting IKEA and I'm not sure what the hype is about. Inexpensive furniture that looks it.
"Sweden is the home of my favorite Muppet and second favorite meatball." ― Sheldon Cooper, Big Bang Theory Let me begin with a simple truth: You must eat the Swedish meatballs first. That's all. I sauntered into IKEA thinking I'd "just browse," but as soon as I saw that ad with the meatball plate, my resistance crumbled like a poorly assembled Hemnes drawer. There's an IKEA Restaurant Yelp listing if you want to read me waxing poetry over these glorious meatballs. Now, let's discuss the maze that is the IKEA showroom. Follow the arrows on the floor or go rogue and cut through their various departments. It's urban survival meets interior design. You don't find furniture, you earn it. As much as I joke about how bad their assembly instructions are and the fact that most boxes are missing half their pegs and screws, I enjoy me an IKEA bookcase. Note: Bring your own bags because they don't provide them here.
LOVE this place! I can go in and walk around and get ideas for things I want to do but I can also shop on line and they tell you exactly what isle, and bin the stuff you want is so I can just go grab it and roll out! They have EVERYTHING! Even things you don't know you need! And they usually have several colors of each item! The prices have gone up recently but what prices haven't, I think, for what you get, it's still a bargain! I'll shop here anytime!
IKEA is the greatest furniture store. I've been shopping here since being a teenager. By the way, this is their 40th anniversary and they are having a special sale to celebrate. There are so many creative innovations coming out every year by the IKEA designers and engineers. You can find a perfect, useful and efficient fit for all your small or large apartment, dorm, house, or office needs. I think they've mastered the hideaway space saving designs for dorms and small apartments. Usually the look of the furniture and textiles is clean, modern Scandinavian or traditional Scandinavian. Most furniture is bought un assembled with clear, easy to understand instructions and tools necessary (mainly Allen wrenches) sometimes you need to use your own hammer. Sort of like building a new Lego set for grownups. My all-time favorite item is the Billy bookcase. This is a mainstay of IKEA. There are so many colors, sizes, doors, and options for customization. IKEA has a two-story layout. Many customers joke that they get trapped in the maze as they move through the different sections and set ups, but if you look closely, you will see a door marked shortcut that moves through the store and will bring you to the escalator or exit. The top floor consists of display rooms with everything set up for you to see how it looks and works, couches and chairs, kitchens, and the kitchen custom order section, a kid and baby section, bathrooms, closets, dressers and bookcases, and last but not least, the Swedish bistro that serves famous meatballs with Lingonberry sauce, smoked salmon with potatoes and salad, and many other good items. There's seating in the bistro to rest or eat. If you get the free IKEA rewards family membership every time you visit IKEA, you get free cups of coffee. The bottom floor has customer service check out registers and another café and market, along with bathrooms and the elevator and escalator entrance and exit. There is a lot of kitchenware, textiles, home organization, small items and details, candles, frames and lamps, and plants. This opens up into the large warehouse. As you make your way to the exit, any large furniture items for assembly will be placed in this warehouse. Grab a cart as you enter and also a bag if you need it, to hang on the front part of the cart. I'd recommend taking a picture of the tag of any item you want and this will list the aisle and bin number for the piece you're looking for. Find your aisle and pull your piece. After this, you're pretty much to the exit. There is an as-is section to the right for more deeply discounted pricing. There's a self checkout and a full checkout area. Scan your IKEA rewards family QR code here as well to collect points. They used to give you a percentage discount on every purchase with this rewards card, but they must've stopped doing that this year. I was disappointed about that. If you have a lot of heavy items, you can grab your car and pull it up to the front parking near the exit for loading and unloading. IKEA provides twine and trash cans nearby for your convenience to tie down any pieces for your drive home. Another excellent plus about this store is that they have a kids' play area located at the entrance under the escalators that has a lot of fun play equipment and attendants. I rarely left my kids with babysitters but when I went IKEA, I always let them play in the kids' play area and felt safe that they were being watched in a locked and guarded room. The kids also really loved it. Afterwards, we would go upstairs and eat lunch together in the bistro. Very good memories and it gives busy parents of young ones a nice break while they are trying to shop for furniture for the house. Another really great plus about the store is that they keep their prices extremely affordable and reasonable. They give high-quality options and they also give low quality options (for example, particleboard instead of real bamboo) so that if you need to furnish your apartment and you're just starting out, you are just as able to shop here as if you are established in a home and have more spending money. Very large private parking lot for customers.
This is an adult playground!! What a fun store. It's like a maze and easy to get lost. I couldn't believe the reasonable prices on everything, especially kitchen items. Lots of items are cheaper than Walmart or the dollar store. Leave a few hours to walk around. The food at the food court looked super yummy, especially the meatballs, and I plan to try those next time. They even sell bags of them at check out. The employees I came into contact with were so nice.
I've spent thousands here, but after today, I'm done. This wasn't just "bad service"--it was a masterclass in corporate inefficiency and a total lack of basic operational competence. We found two chairs--clearly tagged at a $120 discount--and a coffee table. We couldn't find the aisle, so we found an employee. She was helpful enough, but she set off a chain reaction of misinformation. She told me I'd pick them up at the window and--crucially--that the price adjustment had to happen at the register, not the service desk. She also confirmed they were the last two in the store. Then the "Calculated Inefficiency" started: The Register Runaround: I waited 15 minutes at the register only to be told the exact opposite: "We can't do that here; go to the service desk." When I pushed back, they pulled us out of line to "fix" the order. The Double-Wait: They couldn't fix it. They told us to check out normally and then go to a back desk. So, we waited in line again. The $5 Audit: After scanning 50+ items, the system dings. The cashier makes my wife stand there for another 10 minutes rescanning every single item over a suspected $5 discrepancy. We checked the receipt later--nothing was missing. A massive, bureaucratic waste of time. The Final Insult: We get to the separate desk to finalize a $1,700 order. The employee takes all my info, tries to place it, and then realizes--surprise--they're "out of stock" but might have them tomorrow. No guarantee on the discounted price. No offer to deliver. No accountability for the fact that their system "reserved" items that didn't exist. I spent nearly an hour just trying to give you money. You couldn't even manage a basic raincheck or a delivery for a loyal customer. Your "automated system" is a joke and your internal communication is non-existent. I'm not coming back. I value my time and my sanity more than your flat-pack furniture. Absolutely abysmal.
We love coming here and walking around, often with no agenda but we find many items that we didn't know we needed. The team members are so friendly! The store is so clean and well kept.
At the IKEA return it gets crowded even when you go there first thing in the morning. You need to get a number from the kiosk and then finish the instructions. One is to get your receipt ready.
What can be said about IKEA that hasn't already been said. I've been shopping at IKEA since I was in college back in San Diego. I can afford more expensive furniture now but some things really don't require it be fancy or expensive. For example I came in to get a shoe cabinet for our entry way. No need to go crazy with an item like that. I want something cute, functional, and cheap. Overall I enjoy walking through the store for some ideas on space management since they show many items to help with small spaces. When I came this time it was Monday around 5:30pm. It was so pleasant to shop, it was dead!! I loved it. I avoid the weekends here as it can be a zoo. I had to return a lamp that I didn't like and the person helping me was super friendly and efficient. She gave great customer service. Overall, most of my ikea items have stood the test of time, but every once in a while a product will be a dud. They also have a fantastic plant section with nice pot and live plants. I am admittedly an addicted plant mom so I have to be careful with that section. Anyway, hope you enjoy your next trip to IKEA as much as I did on mine :) I read the one star reviews and it appears that buying anything from them from delivery is not a good experience. I only come here for items that I can carry out and load onto my truck myself. So, that is what I'm reviewing. Going to the store and not needing any from assistance from a human. Self look up where the item is, self check out, and self load into my truck. So in essence I'm giving myself a pretty solid review ;) jk
They have lots of items to purchase like little stuffed bee toys, kitchen supplies, measuring tape, sealing bottles, popsicle container makers, paper napkins, reusable foldable bags, bowls, plates, plastic containers, chip clips, lots of chip clips, reusable cloth napkins, placemats, large blue reusable bags, towels, and so much more! It was hot when I first visited. I think their air conditioning was broken. I was sweating a lot. The cashier was also using a portable fan. The second time I went, it wasn't so hot, but still a complete maze. Their ice cream machine was broken but it has since been fixed. Loved looking at the kitchen supplies and they have a great restaurant upstairs. The restaurant has a lot of tables and chairs. Wish they had the chicken meatballs offered. You can only get those frozen.
Nicest Ikea than the one I use to go to, more options and cleaner. Staff is alright. Selection is a bit more than other locations and the value is the same as other stores
IKEA is definitely worth a visit if you are looking for some affordable house items/furniture and you have time to walk through the maze of rooms! You know you could be there a while when they have a map with shortcuts listed on it. The second floor has all the show rooms while the first floor has the warehouse of items to purchase. I needed a few things for my kitchen and I ended up getting them and a few additional items too. I went during a weekday so it wasn't too busy and I only had to wait in line for a few minutes.
Hadn't eaten or shopped here in a long time. Now I remember why lol. We tried the Swedish meatball plate. This was very mediocre in the sense it had no real flavor and it was cold. The Mac and cheese was super bland. The rainbow cake was dry and the icing was very sugary. The only good part of the food was the lentil soup. Even the garlic bread was a bit over toasted. As for the food it felt like hospital food. The other reason I I didn't like coming here was the mouse maze to get to the end. I would not come back but the wife enjoys walk. I think I'll wait in the car hahaha. read more

Their delivery service is the absolute worst! After spending $1,500 on bookcases we thought it would be super convenient to spend another $90 on getting it all delivered. They sent us an email saying 8am to 8pm would be our window but we were relieved when they called and said they would be there from 2pm to 6pm however they didn't show until 9pm and two items were damaged. read more

It's always clean and well organized. The app is helpful to see items are in stock and the quantity on the app is pretty accurate! Plenty of parking spots, clean cafeteria! After the checkout point, there's also a shop where you can buy packaged and frozen food (like their meatballs) read more
IKEA is a go to for cheap, cute and simple home items. It's located in Tempe close to AZ mills and is huge. You can find everything from kitchen utensils, furniture to food and plants. They are very organized and there is a map of the store if you're looking for something specific. I needed some stuff for the kitchen and loved walking around to see what else I didn't need. They also have a cafe where you can load up on the famous Swedish meatballs and snacks. Checkout was a bit busy as they didn't have many registers open but it went smoothly. I enjoy having an IKEA to shop at in the area and will be back soon I'm sure! read more
I love Ikea and I especially love this Ikea, because I can shop without the crowds that the Burbank, California had that I used to shop at. My paternal grandparents were Swedish immigrants, so I grew up with a lot of Swedish influences. A lot of the food that Ikea sells in their marketplace bring back fond memories of my youth every time I shop there. Although some of the items aren't high end, Ikea has so many treasures just waiting to be discovered. The Swedes are extremely practical, ans a lot of the merchandise at Ikea reflects this. Anyone living in a small space can especially benefit from their displays for excellent ways to stay organized. I love to browse thorough the giant store space, looking at all of the creative decor and cool things you just can't find anywhere else. We always eat at the Ikea restaurant when we shop, because the food is excellent and well priced. read more

"Who goes to IKEA for furniture?!" -Me "Who goes to IKEA for the food?!" -literally everyone else I have only been to IKEA a handful of times and that was because I was craving their Swedish meatballs! You can't beat 8 Swedish meatballs, mashed potatoes, and broccoli, for $5.99!! They also have chicken tenders, fries, and Mac and cheese! Bf opted for the pork shank, mashed potatoes, and broccoli for $8.99 and it was excellent! The pork was falling off of the bone! You really can't go wrong with anything from their cafeteria! The only thing bf says is that the portions are "European" aka smaller lol. You can also pick up a bag of the Swedish meatballs by the check out! They make it easy enough to find the cafeteria but it's a maze trying to get out after that haha! No prob, IKEA has some really great deals!! We got a king duvet for $15!!! marked down from $40!!! And $40 ain't bad either!! When the deals are THIS great, yes, it is busy. Unlike previous posts I have seen, there was no line to get in. Pre-COVID people were oblivious to personal space and that has not changed... something to be mindful of but at no fault of IKEA's! I did see staff sanitizing the dining tables frequently! IKEA makes for a fun afternoon with good eats and good deals! read more
I need to update my review due to a recent very poor experience. I will only remove one star because we generally don't have issues of this magnitude with IKEA and I hope we won't again. I purchased two desks and the needed legs were not in the self-service space. When I went to the help desk I was told they were not available in black but there were 7 in white, however they couldn't locate the 7 (which wasn't enough anyway). They told me to have them shipped would be a minimum of $45 shipping and they weren't expecting any more in any time soon. They directed me to a wood leg option that cost double what the desks cost. I went to the ikea app, ordered the legs and picked them up from the same store later that afternoon. A waste of my time, gas, and effort because your systems are incorrect and your employees are not appropriately informed. By the way, shipping via the app was $8...nowhere near the minimum $45 that I was told. read more

I have always been a fan of ikea.. I could spend hours there roaming the staged areas upstairs followed by the aisles and aisles in the marketplace .. Swedish meatball dinner in the restaurant .. love all of it. But their home delivery service needs some improvement.. I ordered a bed and mattress for delivery on Saturday and was given paperwork and told to go pay at the register and expect my delivery on Tuesday .. as I was walking to the car with my receipt i realized the bed was less money then expected so I went back in and found out the center support beam and wooden slats were not included in my order. I went back to the home delivery counter and asked them to be added and I'd go pay at the cashier.. seems easy enough. But NOOO I was told I needed to go grab a cart and pick the items out of the warehouse, stand in line and pay and then drop them off at the delivery counter in the customer service area and have them tie the two orders together. It's Saturday my delivery is Tuesday why would I need to pick something for an order that hasn't even left the store yet, there's 3 days before delivery. It took me an extra 30min to find a cart, pull the items, stand in line again and then go wait in customer service for the one person who knows how to tie the orders together. What a waste of time! This system is whack .. your employee failed to put all the pieces for the bed on the order .. to ensure everything makes it on the truck one person or team should pull that order plus any revisions not the customer. read more

We came here to buy a lot of things for our place. There were a lot of people here and it was a hot day. We didn't talk with anybody that worked here but they were available to ask questions throughout the showrooms. It was easy to find what we were looking for and a lot to see here. We have come back here a few times and each time had a lot of people walking and shopping. The parking lot was mostly packed but we still found a parking spot. We will definitely come back to buy other household items. read more

Ridiculous line for returns immediately after opening. One clerk with zero speed. Absolutely unacceptable. I could not be more dissatisfied right now. Management needs to address the issue. Plenty in line saying that's how it is all the time. Twenty minutes on and two returns completed. Pack a lunch. Apparently the plan is to make people wait until they give up. read more

Does this location offer child care? EDIT: I went to this IKEA and it did have child care for one hours worth of shopping.
No the Smaland child care is still "temporarily closed" at all US locations.
If I buy an item will they hold it? Something I really want which is always out of stock I want to go and buy but my bf won't be able to help me with his truck until he gets off work?
You can order for pickup! Their online order and pick up process is pretty easy. They're open Mon - Sat: 10:00 AM - 9:00 PM and Sun: 10:00 AM - 8:00 PM
Has anyone recently ordered for delivery? Is the desired delivery date given accurate right now?
I had a delivery a couple of weeks ago. They gave me a timeframe for delivery and they were very accurate. 5 stars for their delivery service!
Is this a furniture store or a restaurant? haha all i see is pictures of food?
Yes they have tons of furniture too. I guess most of us just like to post photos of the food.
