Just got back from my second visit this week, as I also happened to visit this particular location yesterday. I'll summarize both quickly:
I caught the weekend shuttle bus yesterday with the hopes of finally trying their much toted 99 cent breakfast. Made it there at about 11:20 AM., and breakfast officially ends at 11. Bummer.
But not to worry - even if I wasn't feeling like chancing the Swedish meatballs (especially after that horse meat scare) - I did try out their Baby Back Rib combo with fries and cornbread. For $7.99 that half slab was pretty big and filling, and put Chili's version in their 2 for $20 combo to shame easily. Washed it down with a glass or two of lingonberry juice mixed with Sierra Mist, with a lovely piece of apple cake on the side.
The apple cake actually made the trip worth it as I saw this the very first time I ever visited a few years back but didn't think to try it.
After brunch/lunch, I went downstairs and ended up in their Marketplace section, which is like cheapskate heaven. Long story short, I ended up buying three sets of these cardboard storage boxes that were clearance priced at $3.49 while desperately trying not to buy anything else. Not a fun ride/walk home from the bus lugging those things around.
The checkout line was long, but it went fairly fast and I was on my way...until I saw the food market right outside the checkout. I ended up browsing through it as well and ended up buying a frozen applecake, pepperkakor (ginger thins), and a few sparkling apple & elderflower drinks.
Damn my lack of will power.
As for today's visit, it started off bumpy at first. The NJ Transit bus I took ended up in a minor accident with one of those independent small commuter buses, so we waited nearly an hour before finally moving.
Finally got to try the 99 cent breakfast, or so I thought. The server placed french toast sticks on my tray alongside the home fries, eggs, and bacon, and that made it a "deluxe breakfast", if you can call it that. I also added a bagel, apple cake, and a drink to the mix and my total easily ballooned up to $7.75. No problem. I was at least aware that additional breakfast items would cost more, but since their website doesn't list everything on the menu or the specific in store pricing, I was a bit confused.
Plus it's not like you can say, "Oh hey, take these french toast thingys off. I want my total to be 99 cents!".
The meal itself was meh at best. The best thing about it was probably the home fries, as the eggs did not taste like eggs (Egg Beaters, anyone?) nor the bacon resemble bacon. Or at least the bacon was turkey bacon and not pork bacon. I think. But for 99 cents, I guess it's worth the thought that it's breakfast, right?
The bagel was stale, as if it had been left out from the day before and put back to serve to another unsuspecting customer (i.e. me), and the glassware was dirty. I've read reviews that the employees at this particular location seem to be going through the motions, but that was ridiculous. Are they simply wiping off the used glasses and putting them back out for people to use rather than washing them? Yuck.
After that "meal", I ventured down to the Marketplace to do some closer browsing than I had done the day prior. My day's hull included a food container for the lovely pepperkakkor, a vegetable streamer, and a contoured bed pillow. I also hit up the food market and restocked on more of those sparkling apple/elderflower beverages.
All in all, it was an okay experience, but if you're going to this location, here are some tips:
-if you can, take the free shuttle. I dished out about $13 round trip to get here with the bus operating every hour. The free shuttle apparently operates approximately every half hour from 10 AM. to 6 PM. every Saturday and Sunday.
-if you're buying small, light items, bring a large reusable bag. If you forget, IKEA does sell them for about 59 cents at the checkouts.
-if you're buying a few items that might be too large or cumbersome for you to carry, bring a travel trolley. I was silently bemoaning the fact that I hadn't bothered with that, or bought backing tape to secure my cardboard boxes in place for travel.
Or, if you can't get a trolley, bring someone with you. Two sets of hands are a whole lot better than one.
-If eating in the restaurant, make sure before you complete the purchase that your cutlery/glassware is clean. Sad to say that, but if they fail to do it, you'll have to look out for yourself.
-If you want to go to Jersey Gardens across the way after wards, DO NOT WALK. The road between both is not pedestrian friendly, and I could have sworn I saw a RIP wreath of flowers on the way to Jersey Gardens.
P.S. - As a result of the yuck factor with my glassware, I filled out their in store survey. I gave the restaurant a gagging smiley face rating. That lack of cleanliness would not fly at a regular restaurant, and could get you shut down on health violations. read more
