I is for IKEA: IKEA has been a good go to over the years for a large variety of relatively inexpensive furniture and other home goods. The cashiers & other workers have always been friendly. Three interesting instances with the cafe: One time back in 2013, I was in job training for work. And we had work travel from PG to Montgomery County. I suggested we could stop at IKEA for lunch on the way to Montgomery. And while I enjoyed my Swedish meatballs with cranberries and mashed potatoes, we got lost trying to get out of this maze. My coworker got frustrated and was like we don't have time for this. We ended up asking for directions to get the fastest way out, and the worker was friendly letting us go through some random side door. I admitted to him afterward, yeah IKEA probably wasn't the best idea for lunch. One time in April 2016, I had gone to Maryland Day on the University of Maryland campus, and I thought 'when in Rome' while in College Park I would go to IKEA for the Swedish meatballs for dinner. Beforehand but after MD Day, I had talked to this chick I had interest in and mentioned that I was going to IKEA for dinner for the Swedish meatballs. She was like 'NO! Those Swedish meatballs are so bad for you!' While I agree they aren't healthy, I think she overreacted a bit. In February 2020, my girlfriend (now ex) & I were in there shopping for a few things, which was pleasant experience with the helpful & friendly staff there. I was hungry after a long time shopping & walking around the maze and once again got the Swedish meatballs. I think I was more hungry than she was as she didn't eat and also the Swedish meatballs contain pork, and she was strictly Kosher (although there were other options), but she just wasn't that hungry and was fine with eating something after we got home. I remember that the prices had gone up significantly, but still relatively inexpensive, but I remember back in 2013 or '16, the food was dirt cheap! I've also have gotten the hot dogs & ice cream there, which are still cheap. A hot dog there is like 75 cents or something crazy low. My husband and I have visited this location several times over the last few weeks. We are in the middle of renovating our Inlaw apartment and need to fully furnished it, so IKEA is an affordable option. We have gone twice over two different weekends, and once during the week. I highly recommend that, if you have the option, you attend during the week. It is absolutely chaotic and crowded on the weekends! We found our visit during the week to be far more enjoyable and less overwhelming. The staff that we encountered were very friendly and helpful. They also were taking all the necessary precautions during Covid. If you are handy, and willing to put together the furniture, or pay to have it assembled, this is a great option. I got in the self-checkout line and paid with my credit card. A message came up on the screen saying that I was randomly chosen to check my items. I called the agent and completed the sale. My son had a cutting board and when he paid with his card, the same "random" message came up. NEEDLESS TO SAY THAT WE ARE PEOPLE OF COLOR. This is my favorite IKEA close to where I live. I like it because it's easy to access and the parking is very open and not confusing like the one in Virginia. I used to be a huge fan of IKEA but more recently, I've been very careful about what I buy there because of how poor the quality is and it is what is to be expected for such low cost. There was a time everything I had was IKEA and now I've slowly weeded out most of the furniture because the pieces rarely survive a move. I now patronize thrift stores more for furniture that is higher quality. This visit we got a hodge podge of times from plants to kitchen utensils to linens to curtains, etc. Awesome that huge solar farm is now over the parking lot. I didn't drive our electric car because it was too small for the stuff that we were going to buy. Cafe was open and all the eating areas were spread out. I have to say, I'm extremely impressed with Ikea's COVID protocol. Not surprising though. My boyfriend and I went on a Saturday a little before 4 pm on what felt like the hottest day of the summer so far. One girl literally said out loud in the parking lot that she felt like she was on the equator because it was so hot. I totally agreed with her. We noticed there was a line outside and contemplated turning around but saw a bunch of people with blue and yellow umbrellas and thought, maybe it won't be that bad. To our surprise, it wasn't! We walked towards the front door and saw that there was one employee who was sanitizing umbrellas to hand out to anyone who needed one. She handed us one and even thanked us! As we approached the start for the line, which looked like one of those metal barred lines at an amusement park, another employee stood there with ice buckets full of cold bottles of water. She was also super friendly. I don't think I would be if I was told to stand out in the sun on the hottest day. The line moved extremely quick and there were 6 ft markers to ensure social distancing. There weren't too many people in line but my boyfriend suggested that they set it up this way to avoid everyone entering all at once. Within 10-15 minutes, we were at the front door and could feel the AC blasting. We closed our umbrellas and handed them to another friendly employee at the entrance. She put them into a cart and waited for the group in front of us to move further before allowing us into the building. She also makes sure that every adult is wearing a mask. The showroom was not as crowded as it usually is on the weekends but there were still quite a bit of people. I think most people tried to keep their distance, and be respectful but a few clusters formed here and there. There were plenty of hand sanitizer and wipe stations at each section of the showrooms. Every computer station also had hand sanitizer and wipes. Of course, all employees wore masks. They are prepped. By the way, no longer provide pencils and paper tape measures. I was sad that the cafeteria was closed to the public but I understand why. Their cafeteria is designed to be mostly self serve, the size of the seating area and the amount of people entering would make it difficult to sanitize safely and efficiently. It would also be difficult to control the amount of people that enter. No worries! Downstairs in the marketplace, you can purchase a lot of their popular dishes, frozen. We picked up their infamous Swedish meatballs, mash potatoes, and lingonberry sauce. They were really easy to make and tasted just as good as they do in the cafeteria. If you're worried about going to Ikea to see how that shelving unit you've been eyeing online looks in real life, I encourage you to do so. I, myself, felt pretty safe. Very friendly employees. This location is almost spotless. Even the parking lot is clean and free of loose carts. The layouts they have in the store are nicely done. Very clean & professional looking. Also good pricing too. 90% of the items I was looking for was in-stock. Upon asking various workers about bedroom layouts they were highly professional and knowledgeable. Never pressured to buy anything I didn't need which is a plus. Also since I have an electric car. It's a plus they have three Level2 chargers in the parking garage so I can charge up while shopping. The general crowd here is middle to high-class. You barely see any kids really. I seen a few but they were just taking selfies in the various layouts though. But were still mature. Overall. A good IKEA. My 1 star is for the food sanitation - I was there a few months ago and went to get food with my husband and there was a roach running along the counter where the hot food is served. I told one of the servers behind the counter, and he just grabbed a tissue and killed it, threw it out, and continued serving. That just totally grossed me out. I just can't eat food there anymore, at least not up at the main dining area. I was here this week, and was nervous about things given the lack of communication due to Covid-19. I hoped to order online, but the items I wanted weren't available for delivery. I then hoped to use the click and pick up option but that option also wasn't available. I tried to call Ikea to confirm the items I wanted were in stock, but there was no local phone number, just the toll free number that wasn't accepting calls (except for kitchen orders) due to a higher volume of callers. So I made the long drive to Ikea hoping everything would be in stock. Fortunately, everything was there and well organized. No problem social distancing because Ikea is so big. Bought a couch to be delivered to my house, and the company that IKEA partners with in this region for deliveries (XPO Logistics) missed 6 "confirmed" delivery windows throughout the span of 2 weeks. I ended up cancelling my IKEA order because apparently IKEA has no influence over the companies they outsource their deliveries to. XPO's customer service reps kept making up excuses and lying to me about when my couch would be delivered. IKEA's customer service reps seemed powerless to do anything even though this other company was ruining their reputation. I purchased a rolling tray for my books and purchased a blue cart instead of black. I went back 3 days later to exchange it for the black which is equally priced. For those that need this review, let me break it down. Whatever your budget is IKEA will have merchandise for you. The merchandise quality will also be as good as what you pay. So if you come to the store looking to furnish your whole home for 20.00's they will have a line of furniture made from re-rerecycled popsicle sticks, and used bottle caps, and it will last you until you can either get another 20.00 or upgrade to the 21.00 set made of recycled jailhouse mattresses. What you get really depends on what you're bringing to the table, or how much you're willing to spend. Just know that whatever you buy, you will see at everybody elses house who shops at IKEA because even though its a big store, they really thrive off of their popular items, and the selection in that area doesn't really change much. Over the last 12 years I have purchased the same dresser 3 times, 2 of those times were for myself. My biggest complaint about spending the money for the nicer items, is that the stuff doesn't really travel well, and a lot of it is super heavy and bulky. Great for a home owner locked into a 30 year mortgage, but maybe not for a younger person who moves around a lot. Bottom line is IKEA is what you make it. As far as customer service goes there are like 350 employees at this location probably more, so it's just going to depend on who you come in contact with. read more

Assembling an IKEA table, a part broke. OK, I understand that IKEA is very supportive with many spare parts in the store. But my part was not one of them. So it turns out that I have to wait 10-14 business days -- almost a month -- to receive the replacement part. Now, I understand that breaking the part is my fault, and I appreciate IKEA's making the replacement available. But I needed this piece more quickly. I was willing to pay express shipping; after all, I take responsibility. But that is not an option. I arrive at your College Park, MD location around 7:40 on 8/19/24. Because I knew exactly what I wanted I headed straight to the kitchen department. I was helped by sales person Diamond H. #10086921. At the competition of the transaction I headed straight the pick up area and waited. Because it was getting close to closing it appeared there were not a lot of customers in the pick up area. After waiting nearly an hour I approached the person behind the counter who started looking. This took what seemed like another 10 minutes. I watched several people come after I got their items and left even though there was only one number on the board to be called (mine never appeared). I have a love and hate relationship with IKEA. I hate how crowded the place gets, no matter if it's the weekend or weekday. Depending on what time you arrive, you could be fighting for a parking spot, even though there is a vast amount of spots outside and in their garage. The lines are usually long at the checkout counter and the information kiosk. The space is huge; I usually feel like I've got my workout by the time I leave. But then there are different showrooms and spaces that spark creativity for my house. It's honestly like a playground for kids and adults. My little one loves exploring the different "rooms" and pretending they are her living space. Not the mention how affordable many of their furniture and items are. Quality is decent and design is basic. This is a place to purchase temporary furniture or toys for your kids before they grow out of them, dorm room lighting and floor mats, basic kitchen utensils that get the job done, and any home items you need throughout the transitions of life. We tried to return a mattress today to the College Park IKEA and met one of the rudest customer service managers around. Keep in mind that IKEA has a 25-year mattress warranty. We've had our mattress for 9.5 years. A couple months ago the springs started to pop up, right around the hip area, and the defect has been giving me hip aches. We lugged in our king size mattress today and started the warranty exchange process with a very nice customer service rep, Chantel. However, she needed approval from the manager at the time, a guy I'll call Steve, since his name was Steve. From minute one, Steve was rude and unprofessional, first addressing only his colleagues and not us, the customers, who were standing right there. He told them, "There's no way they can return this with a urine stain on it." Reader, there was no urine stain on it. There was definitely some age showing on the mattress, i.e. mild discoloration right around where our faces/shoulders were every night for almost 10 years (we always used both a mattress pad and sheets). I interrupted him and said it was not a urine stain, and how can they claim a TWENTY-FIVE YEAR warranty policy if the mattress has to appear unused? He got sarcastic with us and asked how WE were going to explain the policy to HIM. We attempted to ask more questions/clarify the policy but were cut off by him rudely and he made to walk away from us. By then, we were so frustrated that we walked away, too. We later returned to get his name and another very nice customer service representative Adrienne said her understanding of the policy was that if there was a defect in workmanship (such as springs jutting into your hip socket every night), IKEA should honor the warranty policy given that the wear and tear (on a different section) obviously did not cause that defect. But, alas, middle manager Steve's decree ruled the day. My advice to you is that if you need to make a big ticket return or enforce a warranty -call ahead and make sure Steve is not working. read more

Ikea has a lot of interesting homewares, however, the staff (though not all) are poorly trained, very unprofessional, and sometimes unexpectedly rude. We were in their wardrobe department and had configured a wardrobe set for $2000 but they gave us a completely wrong order and we got confused before paying at the cashier and went back to the wardrobe department to double check. They just said lightly it was a wrong order but no apology at all. They didn't give us clear instructions for shipping items, picking up items and out of stock items, making us going back and forth multiple times, and they gave the wrong answer every time! Who doesn't love IKEA?? This location is set up similar to other IKEA stores that I've been to. PARKING: There's plenty of parking to go around, but boy does it fill up quickly! We got there shortly after the store opened and the parking spots closest to the store entrance were already beginning to fill up. There's some parking for loading up heavy items you've purchased just after you exit the store. The store was well stocked and clean. There were also plenty of IKEA staff ready to help out. I enjoyed the various studio setups in the store. It helps the customer better envision how things will fit at home. I can seriously spend the whole day here! Hours went by and it felt like I had just stepped foot inside. Bonus? This IKEA is equipped with both a restaurant and little market for Swedish candy and other treats. I brought a few plants from there and they weren't cheap. After a few days the plants started to die and we noticed this slimy web on the leaves. My husband used his phone light to see what it was and these white bugs started to move faster on the web. We then looked in all the plants and noticed one had an alarming amount of gnats, slugs (which looked like snails), the other had spider mites (which was creating the web) and it also had beetles (which looked like lady bugs). I put the large plants outside and threw the smaller plants away in disgust. I'm sure ikea knows that these plants are infested but they still sell them and at an expensive price to. This location has been here for years. It has always been consistent with its service and how clean the store is. Even on a busy weekend you won't find it difficult navigating around the location. Food here is a definitely a must try. My friends and I munched on the Swedish meatballs, salmon balls, salmon filet and the marinated salmon. The food was delicious and for 4 entrees very in expensive. Best thing to do before come here is plan out your day. Know exactly where you are going and what you need to find. I haven't visited this Ikea in over 5 years and after today's visit I will not be back. We were followed and watched our entired visit. My husband was looking for a desk for his office and we would look for a chair for my son while we were there. We (my husband, 6 year old son and myself) made it to the office section and we were followed by one of the workers there. I had noticed him when we first enterd the section and thought it was odd that he was walking so close to us but didn't think anything of it at first. However, whereever we moved, he was close behind. My suspicions were validated when my husband and I went separate ways (my son stayed with me). Wherever my husband walked, the worker moved right along with him. It was very obvious. This continued when we made it to the checkout area. We were in line waiting and chatting. When I looked up, I saw an Ikea worker in the checkout line to our right staring at me. When she saw that I noticed her, she told another worker to switch from his post (the checkout area to our left) to move to our self checkout area. Once we were checking out, we just so happened to receive a "random check" before we could finish checking out and all of a sudden security was standing next to us pretending to look at her phone all while looking at us. And of course throughout all of this, not one person ever spoke to us, only followed us and gave us a random check and called security. I don't know what they have going on there but they can have it. It was a very different experince from what I remember. Spend more and get nice bedding etc at Macy's. Towels: feel like sandpaper even though I love that pretty green color towel but it's no where near Egyptian cotton or luxury quality. Avoid buying the cheap wine glasses too. One pluck to the glass and it gets shuttered. ): Bed frames, mattresses mehhh. Sofas mehhh. No good night sleep. Ok on to my good list. They have nice kitchen gadgets for your first place or for someone on a budget. Nothing fancy but they have the basics. Plates, mugs and silverware I recommend getting here instead of Target or Kmart. Cheap glasses like for juice or milk is good too. I love buying the candles, decorative glassware, fake flowers. I love the lighting department but some of the lamps are cute but not sturdy on carpet. The Marketplace: I stock on meatballs, lox, jelly cookies and meatball sauce packets. The section I really look forward to is the "As Is" department where damaged merchandise awaits a potential buyer - the prices are great. I recently purchased some really nice house plants and a cool chair (photo attached). His assistance and customer service was 5-star within his ability to provide me with information about the furniture. First, they make it impossible to buy simple items like a cabinet door. You have to find someone to order that for you. They give you a print out that you have to take to self checkout (why can't I just pay when I'm ordering?). You wait, and wait. Finally you pay. Then you have to go and pick it up from the "furniture pick up window". Find my number. It will be 10 minutes. So you wait. 15 minutes after my estimated pick up time, I find someone to inquire about my order since every other customer after me has come and gone. He'll check. I'll wait. Finally he comes back. 2 of the 4 doors are out of stock. I'll have to go to returns to get a refund. There's a line, and guess what? Well you can guess what happens next. Needless to say I'll be waiting a very long time before I ever return to IKEA. read more

If half stars could be given, I'd give IKEA 2.5 because of the following: Customer service. I bought a Himnes wardrobe, whose principal inside piece couldn't be assembled properly because the hole and bolt system used for this was not measured correctly and the locking mechanism for the bolt (the small plastic fasteners) doesn't catch properly. I tried and tried in vain to get in contact with IKEA, but the customer service line, the only one and the one that local stores send you to, is always inundated with a heavy call volume. This means that the system tells you to go online to read their return policy. So now, I have a wardrobe that is 1/5 built taking up space and I can't get someone to tell me if they can just send me the two pieces with correctly positioned holes or not. My next step is to take it up with the credit card company to reverse the charge. So, proceed with caution, because if you're having an issue with one of their pieces, you may be SOL in trying to get it resolved. read more

My daughter and I spent hours here just looking at the displays. Just a day at Ikea motivated me even more to get ready to make a house purchase in the Spring. I love everything about Ikea. all the colors and displays. This store just makes life look so more organized. It is very interesting putting the stuff together but my daughter can do it with no problems. I look forward to buying more stuff for my house this spring. read more

Update: 1. Delivery arrived a week late with no advanced notice or phone call. 2. Service yelled at us on phone for not being at home (um...we have jobs)... Left all boxes on porch for whole day. 3. Assembly service noticed a whole box was missing for bed. Had to call customer service, who said store would call for when missing box would come... surprise, no call came.. I called 5 days later, they said they processed a refund I would get in 10-14 days, and to donate or throw away the other big box of lumber!!! (We're donating it to a local high school theater department). 4. Checked card for refund, and it's $32 short. (Sigh) 5. Bought another bed from Wayfair. read more

If you live on Capitol Hill in DC, this is the closest IKEA (about 35 minutes drive). If you have never been, IKEA is a MASSIVE home goods store where you can buy anything for your home from cabinets to beds to power adapters to lamps and literally anything in between. Their stuff is affordable and most of it is simple and clean looking. As you walk in, you grab a cart and follow the line through the store. It's set up in a way where you have to go through the entire store from start to finish, but there are a few short cuts. A few other things to note: -It's great for kids because they have an awesome kid play zone. -If you're hungry, there's a food court with great Swedish food like Swedish meatballs for cheap. -They have an "As Is" sale at the very end with discounted furniture that's slightly damaged or was on display. -It's usually crowded, but still worth the visit. This IKEA is in the perfect location, it's close to University of Maryland College Park and numerous residential areas, it also has ample parking space. Much like most other IKEAs the store is very clean and organized in spaces based on item type. While sometimes it's hard to find staff for assistance, when you do they are very helpfully especially at check out. Quite a few items were out of stock or low in stock but sometimes it will say when the item will restock on the website. There are only a few registers open and it's a mix of self checkout and workers at register. The lines move very quickly as the workers try to send customers with fewer items to self checkout to keep things flowing. read more
