I had heard about Iekei several months prior to their opening, and I was highly anticipating it since no other ramen restaurants in Houston (to my knowledge) serve iekei style ramen. "Finally," I thought to myself, "finally a taste of Yokohama in Houston!" I was wrong. Herein begins my disappointment. RAMEN: Imagine how I felt when a restaurant named IEKEI does NOT have iekei style ramen on their menu. Getting over my initial disappointment, I settled on the tonkotsu. Being served lukewarm noodle soup is a pet peeve of mine. Fortunately, my bowl came out adequately hot. The flavor of the broth was okay, but lacked depth, richness, and didn't have much of a porky taste. The noodles were slightly overcooked for my liking. Other reviewers mentioned that they only received one slice of chashu, but I actually received two slices. They were tender and marinated well, but the charred flavor (blowtorch, I'm assuming) was completely overpowering. The ajitsuke tamago was entirely too salty and desperately needed some sweetness to balance out the flavor. It was also a little overcooked for me, so I lost out on that unctuous, gooey yolk. Every now and then, I bit into a thicker piece of cabbage which released an explosion of cabbage flavor that clashed with the rest of the dish. The kikurage provided a nice textural contrast, and the menma was forgetful. SUSHI: I ordered one piece of tuna and salmon nigiri. Upon inspection, neither pieces contained wasabi. I could have finished the sushi by the time I actually received the pickled ginger and wasabi. The rice was under-seasoned and a little cold. The tuna had no firmness to it and broke apart in my mouth simply with the pressure from my tongue and hard palate. The salmon offered more resistance, but had an unpleasant aftertaste -- not fishy, but as if it had absorbed other flavors in the freezer. I would avoid the sushi. I've had better fish from packaged grocery store sushi. DRINKS: I only ordered water, but it deserves a mention in this review. The water tasted very...chlorinated? I took a couple of sips and couldn't tolerate it anymore. Undrinkable. SERVICE: I visited early afternoon, and it wasn't too busy. I walked in and stood there awkwardly for a while without being acknowledged. Several workers walked right by me without saying a word. Awkwardness intensifies. Service throughout my meal was spotty, and I think I was seriously forgotten about at one point. Iekei serves both ramen and sushi, but does neither well. The lack of actual iekei style ramen despite the restaurant's name is an egregious oversight and absolutely inexcusable. Even though their location is the closest ramen restaurant to me, I would rather drive 2-3 times the distance for a more worthwhile meal. At least the interior looks nice? read more

The restaurant may change the name from Iekei to EAK.Just like Japanese changed McDonald's to Makudonarudo（マクドナルド）. - Location.It is close to Belt 8., but It is far from downtown Houston.I visited the restaurant on a Saturday around 8pm.I expected a lot of people like Jinya in Midtown.I don't understand why EAK chose Humble. - Decor. I saw many Asian characters and decos.When I went to men's room.I saw some " Chinese pictures"LOL.Anyway, I thought EAK tried to create " Asian vibes".Good job. - Services.I was wondering why other Yelpers gave EAK low reviews.One reason is servers. Actually, I ordered salmon.But my server didn't bring it. Appetizers were amazing! Crab Rolls and the calamari were delightful, and bursting with flavor! I tried the Spicy Seafood Korean Ramen, and that was disappointing. Left a lot to be desired. The lack of bold flavors I was expecting was not only evident but wasn't even an issue. This bowl was made to appease the masses, rather then the culture of the dish. I also tried the eel Unagi, and it was good. But not great. The sauce was more salty then sweet. But the eel was fresh with great texture. The service was great! As that was something that really did it for me. I gave it a 3 star rating due to price and the ramen really disappointed me. However, I would go back due to the service you receive and the appetizers. Im not saying this isn't a place you want to try. But I am saying there are better Ramen locales in the area. read more

Unsweetened tea was definitely sweet tea, after two attempts the tea was still sweet The crunchy roll was cooked and what was used did not taste like real crab...maybe fake crab? Our visit to Iekei was completely spontaneous, as we don't usually get down to that area. The location is excellent - right off the highway and near a Walmart in a shopping center. Right away, we loved the atmosphere. There are booths and tables as well as the ramen bar type seating. We chose a booth near one of the windows. Our server was excellent - very pleasant and attentive. We ordered the crab rolls, crab Rangoons, seafood Korean ramen, and a shaggy dog roll. Everything was fantastic! So I've been twice now. The second time there were noticeable improvements. First time they did not offer unsweet tea, second time it was an option. Also did not have several appetizers available the first time, but the second time they did. The gyoza, spicy cucumber, and ninja jalapeño poppers were all very good. For $3.50, I think the cucumber is a good deal - you get a whole cucumber. The sushi was good and fresh and the ramen was excellent. I was very happy with the spicy miso. They offer adds on such as extra egg, buttered corn, etc. They have two different noodles as well. The menu does not specify, but you can substitute. For example the seafood Korean ramen comes with the thicker wavy noodles, but the spicy miso comes with the thinner straight noodles. If you ask, they can give you the one you want. Service was a bit slow, we waited a bit for the check, but other than that, everything was good. read more

I was exited to visit this please, not only for the ramen, but because of the Takoyaki .... and it was disappointing. The batter is ok, a bit undercook but ok, but is only has a really small piece of octopus per ball, smaller than 1/2 an inch. C'mon, it's name says TAKO (octopus) for a reason. They are really cheap on the most important part of the dish. The ramen is no big deal, so it didn't worth coming all the way from Kingwood to this place. I was in town for the night and craving some Ramen so I decided to order delivery. I ordered the regular edamame and the Tonkotsu Ramen. They sent the spicy garlic edamame which was too spicy to eat. The Ramen was basically a bland miso base with some odd noodles that were not traditional Ramen noodles. The char siu pork was extremely overcooked, dry and tough. Neither the ramen or the sushi stands out. These sushi / ramen restaurants need to either do both well, or focus on improving one of the products. The ramens broth was very watered down and did not have a lot of flavor. The chashu was good, and my wife had the seafood Korean ramen and the noodles were much better tasting than the tonkatsu. I can only comment on the Ramen, because that's what I went there for. I was very disappointed in what they called Ramen. As someone who eats it regularly I was very surprised when my bowl was brought to me, and the noodles looked like they just used angel hair pasta. It also tastes like plain angel hair pasta. The broth was bland, and I needed to add salt, which I've never had to do at any other Ramen shop I've been to. I will say that the pork in the Ramen had really good flavor, which sadly was the only thing flavorful about the meal. They received the two stars because the service was really good. Decent ramen but not satisfying. Tonkotsu broth was just ok, noodles didn't taste like real ramen noodles but close, chashu pork was overdone. We also had the spicy miso ramen, which was the same as above. The gyoza appetizer was actually pretty good! All in all not a bad place to kill a craving but you wont leave wanting more. Admittedly, when going to a ramen shop my go-to ramen is the Holy Grail of them all: tonkatsu. Every bowl I've ever ordered at Iekei was delicious! Thick, creamy broth. Chewy noodles. Tender, melt in your mouth chashu. It's just all around good Asian comfort food. Now is it the best ramen I've ever had? No, but that's not saying much because the best I've had was in Oahu and Ramen Nakumara sets the bar pretty high for even Jinya. For ramen outside the beltway..... Iekei far exceeds my expectations. Don't let negative reviews dissuade you. I mean c'mon.... who gives one star over sweet tea? Or give one star because somehow their braised chashu was overdone? How does pork belly sitting in delicious marinade get cooked overdone? Everyone's an expert food critic nowadays and for some reason people on the Northeast side are exceedingly harsh on our local restaurants. I also highly recommend the sushi! Some rolls were just a tad too sweet for me, but they never skimped on the fish and it always tasted fresh. I would say it's even a step up from Rising Sun. Especially since RS has been getting cheap with their sushi portions yet the rolls keep getting more expensive. Don't know what happened to this place- I've been several times this year and while the service itself has never been what I would call "stellar" it has been attentive enough and the food has always been great. Today however, the service was AWFUL. Let me preface this by saying that the restaurant had only ONE OTHER table that was dining- it was otherwise EMPTY. Our drink order was wrong, our server took forever to bring the check, they checked in with us ONLY ONCE during the meal, and the best part- I ordered the lunch special that was supposed to come with a salad- well by the time we were halfway through our lunch, I realized I never got my salad. After several attempts to flag down a server, I asked- "doesn't the lunch special come with a salad?" And I was very bluntly told "well, we're out of salad" .... .... Um.... ok but like.... so I paid for that.... was no one going to tell me??? They were seriously going to just let me pay for food I was never going to get.... they did end up offering me a soup... but still... they were legit going to just leave it like that.... sad to say, I won't be back. I can't believe this place is so close to my house now. We've been waiting for a ramen place for forever and came during their grand opening. I actually thought the ramen was great! What I did was add spicy chili (waitress offered it) to my broth, and that made it amazing. I got the poke appetizer, spicy Korean ramen, and all 3 mochi ice cream flavors. The ambience of the place is great and I love the long table in the middle that makes it feel like a true ramen bar. We'll be coming back a lot from now on. read more

I normally always go to Jinya for ramen so I was excited to see one closer to home. I came in with high expectations and I hate to say, but the ramen was just okay. I had the tonkotsu which came with one small slice of meat. The meat was tender and tasted great, but just wish it was a larger slice or come with more than one. There is no chicken ramen here which was another let down. I would recommend coming here for the sushi since there are more options for it. As for the ramen, I'll be willing to come back if they add chicken ramen. read more

The crab Rangoons were surprisingly very big. The gyoza sauce was the perfect consistency and flavor. The chicken ramen was really great flavor and the noodles were cooked to perfection. I got the spicy miso ramen and the flavor was beautiful and very spicy. The sole reason I came to review was because of our waiter who I believe was named Peter. He was so extremely polite, attentive, and welcoming. I accidentally spilled a tiny bit of broth on the table and as he was walking he noticed and immediately turned around and grabbed me some napkins.
