So we came up to Idyllwild on a long three day weekend and our rental car, a Ford bronco ,had a sensor light that came on. My best friend's car started behaving odd on our one day getaway, and this garage was our saving grace. I called on a Sunday and met Steve's daughter who tried to help us problem solve. We determined the car wasn't a quick fix and waited until Monday to call back. Steve wasn't sure if he could get us in, but sent a tow truck to rescue us from local lodging. In the end, Steve figured out the transmission was having some issues, and politely told us they couldn't fix it. He charged her an affordable price, and helped us figure out what to do next. We all know that people in Idywild are very kind and helpful. I ran into an issue with my brakes when we were up at the top of the hill. I went to the shop and they really help me out fast. They brought me back home only took a few hours. Ordered the parts and got new brake shoes on in a matter of hours. I knew the shop was backed up and busy and they took extra time to get me going back on the road when they finish. They called me back and said they'd come and pick me up and bring me back to my car. Girls weekend up in Idyllwild and was presently surprised when I woke up to fresh snow on Sunday- the day of checking out of the AirB&B. Of course I didn't have chains and although the road the house was on was plowed and cleared, getting down the driveway had me a little nervous. I initially called Idyllwild Garage and spoke to a woman who said they were closed but they did serve the area through AAA (I'm luckily a member). She also gave me great advice and helped ease my worries. I called AAA, they dispatched Idyllwild Garage and John came out to the house and got my car safely down the driveway onto the pavement. He was SO KIND! told me the best route to go down the hill and even tips for the next time if I ever get into a similar situation with the snow. Somehow I always end up at the Idyllwild Garage when I come into town. Last time I was driving my husbands Subaru, and the wheel started making a terrible scraping sound up hills and on irregular surfaces/speed bumps. I brought it into the shop, and they promised to make some time to take a look and try to figure it out. The owners daughter was so nice, she gave us a ride to Humber park so we could hike while they looked at the car. By the time we got back, a few hours later, the car was done. A rock was lodged somewhere and was scraping. I also had the oil changed and brakes checked. I paid very little for the help and everyone was helpful and pleasant. Today I found myself back at the shop. This time my wheel was shaking like crazy after some playtime in the mud. I took my rig in, and was told to just hose it out and drive around a bit to see if that solves the problem. I did, but the problem didn't go away. I brought the car back in, and left it overnight to be driven, hoisted and inspected, and cleaned off a bit better. Again, the owner offered me a ride, but we were staying close-by and walked home instead. After a fresh balancing, good wash, a test drive by an employee, and some encouragement that mud was the culprit of the issue, not my reckless abandon style of off-roading, I drove off. My car had been shaking prior to the off-roading but nothing like it was after. Upon receiving my car from the shop, all shaking had completely stopped. Everything drove perfectly, and they hardly charged me anything. In a world where price gouging and shady deals have become commonplace, it's sooooo refreshing to see a small-time family operation doing DAMN GOOD and HONEST work. Heck I might drop in every time I am in town just to have basics maintenance done, the crew there understands off-road vehicles better than my mechanic who does SEMA builds! Went back for a replace but says we drove with it but I did not... didn't even try to help us instead got mad at us for coming to replace I didn't know anything about snow chain makes it fault. Amazing A+ service! These guys bailed me out of a huge jam. I had a hole in my metal brake line and it drained all my brake fluid. No brakes. I towed a trailer up the mountain and was camping with family at the time and had no way of fixing the issue myself or getting down the mountain. My truck broke down on a Friday afternoon on my way to Idyllwild. I looked up auto repair businesses on my phone and Idyllwild Garage was the first to appear. It was 6:30, so I doubted that they would be open, but I gave it a try. Steve, the owner, answered. I told him my predicament, and I had narrowed it down to the fuel pump. He explained that they were closed, but if I had my truck towed there, he would wait for it/me to arrive. I had AAA tow my truck to his shop and he offered to drive me on to Pine Cove where I was staying. Long story short, it was the fuel pump, and they had me back on the road by 1:30 the next day. Yelp should allow zero stars for instances like this. This place is a garage that repairs cars, and apparently as a side hustle they tow cars of unsuspecting tourists. I came to hike on the ernie Maxwell trail. The place where you can park near the trail was blocked off by cones. Coming from my hike I saw my car was on the tow truck. Apparently they told people they couldn't park, but I was on the trail. No sign was present that indicated otherwise, it was on forest Dr. The tow guy was rude, inconsiderate and lied to me about the price . I asked how much would this cost me, he stated $250. I asked if I could ride with him into town, since we were far away in the woods and with no cell service and far away.. they abrasively said "no covid" the police were there and offered no help. We had to walk in basically blind. This put us at risk, but no one cared. Once some people in a near by cafe directed us to the center of town, we got there exhausted from the extra 4 miles we had to walk, the man there said it was $480!They said the towing of the car was 250 and they came up with all these bogus fees because they were closed Sunday. I have had my car towed in the past and it passed the night in the pound and the price never exceeded $350. This is all very disturbing and a clear abuse of power and price gouging. It's sad this is being done especially with everything happening in the world. This ruined my whole spring. I was saving up for school, so I could end my last semester well by working less hours as a full time student. I guess some people are satisfied with life by scamming people with ridiculous prices, and predatory towing. Thanks guys, I had a blast in idyllwild. P.S. My husband and I get locked out of our travel trailer a few weeks ago up in Idyllwild while camping. We called AAA and they sent Steve Friemoth out to save the day (or night). Steve showed up in about 15 minutes and tryed to get in, but couldn't so he called a locksmith for us, then I said "I wish there were some little kids around here to git through our open (small) window", that would save the locksmith from getting out of bed (he was in his 80's). My Mercedes flashed a battery/transmission bright warning light while on vacation. I called the nearest Mercedes mechanic who told me not to try to drive it to him and that he couldn't squeeze me in anyway. I called my mechanic back home who told me not to drive it. So I coasted it 3 miles down the hill to this garage and Matt ran some quick tests and told me my transmission was charging just fine and that with the engine code showing, he'd drive it the 4 hours back home if it were him. And I did and it worked. Idyllwild wouldn't be the worst place to be stranded, but Matt was a super nice guy and gave me the quick peace of mind to be able to get back home to deal with it here. The service was fantastic! My husband and I were traveling around in the mountains outside of Palm Springs and noticed we had a flat tire at one of our "Touristy View Spots". We originally were going to go to Hemet for the repair but a passer-by had said a small town called Idyllwild was about the same distance/on the way to Hemet. We called ahead to find out their hours, let the mechanics know we had a flat and needed to get back that night. We literally pulled in, we were greeted like any other customer, the one mechanic took my husband and handled the car stuff, while I walked my dog around. One of the employees was an animal lover and had to meet our dog. Their prices were fair, no pressure on trying to sell anything, they took great care of us. We were so surprised on how fast we were taken care of that we had some extra time to spend around town. It's a neat place, you can see the top of the mountain, the temperature was great, very green (which was nice after all desert)...we felt really at home! Three generations have owned and run this garage. We unexpectedly got to know Steve and his daughter T pretty well when a snowstorm hit Idyllwild this week. We were .2 mi away from a house VRBO we would be staying in for a girls weekend. Our car was ready with cables to put on, but we didn't get them on in time. The duo came to help put the cables on and try to get the car up the very steep snowy hill. Alas, after many tries the car wouldn't make it up the hill. We drove it back down to town to park it over night and got shuttled up with all of our bags. To top that, they asked us to call in the morning and they would help get our car back up to the house. Steve is a gent! My van quit working on a climb up one of the hills in the area. I can diagnose basic engine stuff and often do work on it myself but I couldn't work out what the issue was. He couldn't have charged me and towed it back into town but we just sat their diagnosing things until he worked out it was vapor lock and just told me to wait until it cools down... he followed me down the hill and then fixed the fuel filter almost at cost.
