The gas station is well lit so I consider it a relatively safe location. Besides, it's less than a mile from my house, and if I opt to take Canal Street home instaed of I-10, I drive right past this place. The convenience store is stocked with the usual gas station sundries and there's even a car wash. However, there's no way I'd ever let some gas station car wash with hard plastic bristles "beat" my car clean. All in all this is an ok gas station; albeit a little expensive. Just 2 weeks ago, I paid nearly $4.05 for 93 octane. :-(

While waiting, I observed an employee preparing food, making smoothies, handling cash transactions, and then returning to food preparation while wearing the same pair of gloves throughout the process. Because I had noticed this behavior on previous visits, I decided to ask about it. I asked whether the gloves were intended to protect customers from germs or protect the employee. The employee responded, "We have a lot of gloves. I just didn't have a chance to change them." That response was concerning. Cash is handled by countless people and can carry dirt, bacteria, and other contaminants. Seeing the same gloves used for food preparation and cash handling defeats the purpose of wearing gloves in the first place. What concerns me most is that this did not appear to be a one-time oversight. I have observed similar practices on multiple visits, which suggests it may be a routine habit rather than an isolated incident. Costco may have food safety policies in place, but policies are only effective when they are consistently followed. Based on what I have repeatedly observed, I am no longer comfortable purchasing food from this location's outdoor food court. I hope management reviews food handling procedures and ensures that proper glove-changing and sanitation practices are consistently followed to protect customers.
