The gas station is well lit so I consider it a relatively safe location. Besides, it's less than a mile from my house, and if I opt to take Canal Street home instaed of I-10, I drive right past this place. The convenience store is stocked with the usual gas station sundries and there's even a car wash. However, there's no way I'd ever let some gas station car wash with hard plastic bristles "beat" my car clean. All in all this is an ok gas station; albeit a little expensive. Just 2 weeks ago, I paid nearly $4.05 for 93 octane. :-(

I rarely go there for gas, however, I go there for the fried chicken and meat pies. This is New Orleans, after all, and our gas stations often carry better food than the average restaurant elsewhere, so why wouldn't you try it? My favorite is to pick up food before a Saints game to take to friends and enjoy all afternoon. The seasoning on the chicken is amazing, it's generally pretty fresh, and if you're a strips person and want some dipping sauce, they've got you covered for that, too. Even after Hurricane Ida, last year, they worked hard to get things straightened up enough and cleaned out quickly to keep the neighborhood fed and on its feet. Love that can-do attitude!

During our visit gas was only $2.97/gallon regular, which is literally less than HALF PRICE of gas in California and about 20-30 cents cheaper than other gas stations in the area. What a great deal. While waiting, I observed an employee preparing food, making smoothies, handling cash transactions, and then returning to food preparation while wearing the same pair of gloves throughout the process. Because I had noticed this behavior on previous visits, I decided to ask about it. I asked whether the gloves were intended to protect customers from germs or protect the employee. The employee responded, "We have a lot of gloves. I just didn't have a chance to change them." That response was concerning. Cash is handled by countless people and can carry dirt, bacteria, and other contaminants. Seeing the same gloves used for food preparation and cash handling defeats the purpose of wearing gloves in the first place. What concerns me most is that this did not appear to be a one-time oversight. I have observed similar practices on multiple visits, which suggests it may be a routine habit rather than an isolated incident. Costco may have food safety policies in place, but policies are only effective when they are consistently followed. Based on what I have repeatedly observed, I am no longer comfortable purchasing food from this location's outdoor food court. I hope management reviews food handling procedures and ensures that proper glove-changing and sanitation practices are consistently followed to protect customers.

There is no doubt if I lived nearby that I'd be going here all the time. Had it not been for the large window decals of "Vietnamese Pho" or "Banh Mi" I would have missed this place completely. There is little parking (beyond the street) to speak of and the area could be considered a bit sketch. All sorts of characters are coming in and out of here at all times. Inside the place looks like a convenience store found at any gas station but the real action is in the very back. Look for the food photos and the kitchen counters and one will find all sorts of goodness here. Order something and grab a seat out front where there are TVs playing. I had the pleasure of ordering for a group where we ordered several "regular" (aka dac biet) banh mi, summer rolls (goi cuon), fried dumplings, the infamous phoritto (pho cuon), finished with some a few Vietnamese iced coffees and sodas. It was around $70 for everything and because it was a convenience store, that meant other snacks were available and they accept credit card. We loved everything. The bread for the banh mi was airy and fluffy, which meant there were no cuts to the roof of the mouth. The dumplings were crispy and tasty and the summer roll was very average. The real surprise was the phoritto, which despite the gimmicky feel was actually exactly like pho in a wrap. The dipping broth was particularly excellent and the wrap was packed full of tasty ingredients (pho noodles, cilantro, onions, beef slices, and an *extra* egg). It was far and away the most expensive item at $9 but I don't know of too many Viet places (let alone convenience stores) that sell something like this. Lastly the husband and wife duo who own the joint deserve all the kudos. They were polite, extremely friendly to all who came in, and took the time to ensure my order was as close to perfect as can be. I hope that all of my future visits to NOLA will include a trip to this fantastic biz.
