We got to see the beauty of the massive airport expansion that completed in 2024, along with the friendly kindness of the employees. I now understand why PDX is ranked the best airport in America. It's been over 20 years since I last visited Portland (not counting the Amtrak that we took from LA to SEA), so the airport was very new to me. We need wheelchair assistance when traveling with Mom, and an assistant was waiting for us at the jet bridge. He took us through the parking garage to the nearby car rental building. Definitely walkable but busy: later we learned that there is an underground, heated tunnel between the building and airport terminal. What really interested me about the airport was how everything was connected. It consists of only one terminal, split into two sides: North and South (each with its own security checkpoint); four concourses (A-D), with Concourse B and C on the south end. All concourses are connected via airside corridors (no need for intra-airport train or shuttles), with some having moving walkways. There are a total of 60 gates. We got to experience the airport a lot more on our way back to LAX. Dropping off our rental car was easy (actually got someone to acknowledge our return of the car, which isn't common anymore at airport returns). There is no rental shuttle, so asked the nice Dollar attendant, who then called Delta to ask for wheelchair assistance (she needed to know the name and flight number). In about 15 minutes, Curtis came by and took Mom to the various stops, with my wife and I tagging along. Like at other airports, a good attendant can greatly simplify the navigation of an airport, especially through the security lines. We needed to check one bag (had bought some craft beer to bring back), and Curtis waited patiently while I interacted with the super nice Delta agent. While waiting, my wife told me later that Curtis had been like a tour guide, explaining the airport expansion, especially the iconic wood ceiling in the main hall. North Security was next. Security has all the newest processes, including TSA touchless ID, which meant we didn't need to show our IDs or boarding passes. We were flying out of Concourse D, so went to the Escape Lounge in the Concourse. That's where Curtis left us, letting us know that he would leave the wheelchair in case we would later need it. On our return flight, we had a chance to interact with A LOT of workers from the airport, and EVERYONE was genuinely talkative and pleasant. I'm sure it has something to do with that it was a Saturday, but as we talked to Curtis, he stated that most folks at PDX were like that. Of course, a modern destination airport has to have affordable light rail connections, with connections into the heart of the city. Portland has this route running every 15 minutes, costing $2.80 for a 40 minute ride. Will visit downtown Portland via rail next time.

Disappointing Gate Experience at SNA…read more Frequent business traveler here. Alaska Airlines seriously dropped the ball at John Wayne Airport (SNA) on Flight 750 (1/16/26). First, credit where it's due: the ticket agent was great -- professional, patient, and actually tried to help. He took time to call and verify whether my bag could be checked and handled the situation appropriately. The gate agent, however, was the complete opposite. I cleared TSA with no issues and arrived at the gate while boarding was still in progress. I politely asked to gate-check my bag. Instead of assistance, I was met with hostility and accusations. I was questioned about whether TSA had "let me through with that bag," told I might need to be rebooked despite being checked in, and spoken to in a dismissive, condescending tone. When I mentioned I had a meeting to get to, I was cut off and told, "You need to be on time. It's not our fault you are late." When I explained I arrived at ticketing about 55 minutes prior, I was essentially called a liar. In the end, the bag was checked and I was allowed to board -- proving this never needed to escalate. To top it off, I was told the incident would be "documented on my account," as if I had done something wrong by following instructions and arriving at the gate during boarding. Unnecessary attitude, poor customer service, and zero accountability. I travel for work and will be choosing other airlines going forward.

No space,…read moreno internet, no snacks, nothing. $200 for an uncomfortable chair but on short flights, it's fine. Currently stranded on a spirit airplane. Flight was at 11:30 but we are delayed because of mechanical issues. They said "we need to replace a panel shouldn't be long." Now it's "extensive repairs" and we are delayed on the plane until further notice. It's the 4th of July, we all want to be with our friends and family, drinking beers celebrating America. At least give us complimentary drinks and snacks. People love free shit and it makes us feel better about the situation. It's a hard pass from me to fly spirit again, in the land of the free, ain't nothing free on spirit. Not very American of them. God bless and pray we get out of this mess!

So I ask the customer service if they could not charge me for a carry on and the guy was very uninformed of the policy. He had to call his supervisor which wasn't help. They wouldn't give me fry carry on after they made me wait for another 4 hours. $79 for a carry on. What a rip. Honestly I'd rather pay more to another airline who would be more Considerate about my situation. This is the second time this kind of stuff has happened to me. I am not a very frequent flyer and this was my very first time flying UA! Did I have high expectations of how I would be treated? Not really. I mean, it's 2025 post-shutdown. I get it. Things are different and it (people) will never be as it once was. It's challenging to write a fair review because each day c/would be different from the next, depending on who's working where. I will focus on the flight crew as I was traveling from PDX to SFO, and also the staff at the check in when I entered the airport. But, this flight and entire experience sucked rocks. The staff at the front counter (upon entering the airport) were rude and so flat. Their affect was non-existent. I had ^no doubt about how much they hated their job and hated being there. I also hate being made to feel that I am a bother to them! But, I digress. Was flying to SFO and was notified that my connecting flight was ^boarding and we still hadn't deplaned! What the crap? I found a crew member and explained the situation I was in. The attendant could ^not care less. He made a lame attempt to "call someone" but then informed me to talk to the gate agent when we finally deplaned. I ran to the first employee I saw she was being hounded by tons of people. I was in a panic (rightfully so) and wasn't sure which way was up. I don't fly SFO if at all, but I knew that I was 15 minutes (walking) from where my flight was currently boarding. Two pilots were around and told me to "just go" and that I would be sure to make it. I ran so hard across the SFO airport as if my life depended on it. Because it did. If I missed that connection it would have been disastrous. As I was running for my life, I saw the "Club United" office area. I ran inside, fully knowing no one cares and no one would help me, especially since I was not (and never will be!) a club member. The first thing I said to the older ladies was, "I am not a member but I will join right now, will you please help me?" The one older lady began to help, and asked me for my confirmation number, but no soon as she began to do this, the other one yelled to me, "You're wasting time. Just get to your gate". Long story longer, I barely made it to my connecting flight. When I explained to that staff member what had happened to me, from the plane landing from PDX to SFO, and all the details post, he apologized and said, "Oh, that's not what's supposed to happen". NO REALLY. He should have offered me a perk or something for my grief and anxiety on how the UA staff treated me. Meh. Fly at your own risk with them. Probably will not ever fly with them again, #SorryNotSorry.

At the gate things were clean, and the gate employees kept the line of passengers who were checking their bags moving. Boarding the plane went smoothly. As for the flight, the Portland crew was professional and efficient with snack and drink service. The pilots flew us smoothly 95% off the time, only hitting a little turbulence. Overall, I found this branch of American Airlines to be solid.

I was initially glad I discovered this airline. This was one of three legs I was traveling, 10.5 hours of fun on this leg alone lol. So prior to traveling, Condor switched my inbound flight. What they did was remove my flight all together and merge me into an existing flight that cost $40 less. I knew this because I had debated a long time if I wanted to pay $40 extra, or save money for an additional 2 hours to my existing 2 hour layover. I decided I would, and yet they refused to refund me for downgrading my flight when mine was removed from their itinerary! When I was on their website, a 50% off luggage coupon popped up. I screenshot it immediately before it went away. But there was no place to put a promo code for luggage online. So I called them. They said it can only be done in person. Guess what happened when I tried in person? They denied me saying it should have been done prior to arriving at the airport. I called Condor on the spot and they said it had to be in person, they heard this call but, said they could not. Yes they could. Instead of charging me $120 each way, charge me $60. It was so frustrating what they did to me! The food was not good, yet people all around me ate like this was the best meal ever! But apparently there are 2 more levels of food quality above the cheapest option, I didn't select those so I guess that's on me because I put saving over food quality. One of the flight attendants did something shady. I have the utmost respect and appreciation for flight staff, especially during the pandemic. But that doesn't make it OK to do what she did.... So as soon as I boarded, everyone went to seats that were not their own. This resulted in a dozen people all around me, with 3 seats to themselves. THREE! I on the other hand waited till everyone was seated to see what, if anything, was available. Everyone else that didn't have 3 seats, had 2 seats to themselves. Myself and the person next to me were the only 2 people who had NO extra seat. I asked one of the flight attendants if I may move to a particular open area in the back so I may lay down for this 10.5 hour flight. She said it was OK, it was the upper left back side of the cabin. As soon as I sat down, I got scolded and was made to go back to my seat by another FA who didn't care I was given permission, she said those seats were for them. There were 3 FA's in 2nd class, but she was protecting NINE seats in the back!? Nor do they all break at the same time. Halfway through the flight, I actually saw a passenger sprawled out in the back 3 middle seats that everyone knows is for the staffs personal belongings, which were there earlier. No one took issue with that, not sure how she managed that, but the 9 seats that normally aren't all for staff was somehow an issue. It was a long flight home for me my friends.... When I mentioned this to the airline, they just said I should have bought more seats. Yeah, because the 3 seat people all bought their extra seats....NOT! They even said, maybe they all bought that many seats. Yeah ummmm....No lol. I even spoke with 2 of them and they just boasted about their abilities to grab seats fast, these were not their assigned seats. The following year my parents used Condor for the exact same flight. My dad had paid an extra $120 each way for mom to be in the emergency exit. Well, coming back she didn't get it. They gave it to someone else and had assigned her ANOTHER tiny seat! They would not listen to my dad and later customer service also did not care, saying they only paid to select a seat, but not that particular seat. Not. True. The other seats were less expensive. They would never pay extra solely to choose a specific seat in 2nd class since they're all the same, if it was not an emergency seat with more leg room. Charging extra for choosing a seat in second class is such nickel and diming.

Due to a glitch in their system, despite not issuing a ticket, Condor charged my credit card. Days later Condor reversed the erroneous credit card charge, but at a lower dollar amount due to EUR/USD exchange rate fluctuations. Since this was a case where Condor never should have charged my credit card to begin with, I should not have to be responsible for an exchange rate difference resulting from Condor's error. Condor's customer service was very flippant about the issue and also refused to provide information to the credit card issuer after I filed a claim.

It was the first time doing that for me, and it ended up being a good trip. Not proud of it, but have decided to chase status on Delta for the ability to fly Comfort whenever possible (those 3 extra inches of legroom makes a big difference, especially when the person in front reclines all the way), forsaking better deals on other airlines in some cases. Delta has made a lot of changes in the last couple of years, a big one being organizing its tickets into five main cabin classes: Main, Comfort, Premium Select, First, Delta One. Each one has a Classic or Extra sub-category, with the main difference being an Extra type ticket is fully refundable (whereas Classic will give a credit for future flight). The Main and Comfort class has a further sub-category: Basic. Basic (Main and Comfort) does not allow the selection of seats (often meaning one will sit in a middle seat, possibly away from your group), has a penalty for cancellation or change, and makes one ineligible for free upgrades. Furthermore, Main Basic also doesn't accrue loyalty rewards (miles nor MQDs), and most importantly for us, makes the ticketholder ineligible for Delta Sky Club access (even with an eligible card). I am Platinum this year, meaning that I can buy a Main Classic class for two people (including me) and then self upgrading to Comfort Classic for no additional cost. So when learning that Delta has 3 daily roundtrip flights (using one aircraft back and forth) between LAX and PDX, booked 2 separate reservations: one for two of us (including me) in Main Classic for $353. For the 3rd person, got a Main Basic for $273 ($80 per ticket difference). I figured I could sit in the back for a short flight, and was willing to take the risk of it being non-refundable. Because the flight in both directions were not full, the Main Basic seat ended up being a window (outbound) and an aisle (inbound), though one can't count on that. We flew back on a Saturday (least busy flying day of the week) so got upgraded to First Classic from Comfort Classic a couple days before the flight. Because the flight is under 2 hours, there was no meal service at all (including no premium snack cart, meaning not being able to use my AMEX snack benefit), though the First class flight attendant was very attentive, giving drinks (including alcoholic) as requested. Delta has a good video monitor system (though not Bluetooth enabled) at each seat, and changed to using YouTube music playlists, which I enjoyed on the short flight. The extra shoulder space is really useful, not having to worry so much about bumping into your seatmates space. Though I continue to be disappointed in the comfort of the seat itself...no lumbar support whatsoever. Delta is good (LAX and PDX airports at least) to have wheelchair assistance readily available, and we took full advantage for my mother-in-law.

Given the prices delta charge, they should offer more than water. At least we got some small snacks to hold us over.

The new Arrivals Hall at PDX is gorgeous, which maybe made waiting so long at Baggage check-in worth it? We left out of the new Terminal E expansion, which with ongoing PDX construction was a fairly long walk. Boarding was efficient, the plane wasn't full, and my window seat was comfortable for the early morning flight to Sky Harbor. As we were on a 737-800 Max, there was a bonus of being able to charge my phone.

Usually when I fly to Canada, it's a direct experience. When booking kinda sorta last minute, a…read morelayover in Seattle or Portland happens. And unfortunately it was a hot, hot mess at the Air Canada gates yesterday. Travel delays are totally normal and expected. I try not to freak out about it since it's beyond my span of control. It's also not as bad when the airline employees are transparent about the situation. However, when everyone working at the gate has no clue what's going on and tells you that much, it's a little concerning. As was the case yesterday with multiple delays as well as canceled flights, the attendant in uniform I spoke with told me straight up, "I don't know what's happening over here, ask him." (pointing to a man in a safety vest running interference with other customers). Ooookay. So that's how it's gonna be. Buckle up, Buttercup. It's going to be a bumpy ride! Even more concerning was the travelers whose flight was canceled not once, not twice, but three times over the span of 36 hours at PDX. They were telling their story to anyone who'd listen while we waited for our 2+ hour delay into Vancouver. At that point, they should've just rented a car and driven to Canada... it would've taken less time. Luckily I'm flying back to the States direct on United. No long layovers on the way home.

First air canada flight I ever took- window was literally coming out of the cabin wall (see picture…read morebelow) and I had to push it back in each time we hit any bumps. Then Air canada lost my luggage- I returned to the airport to pick it up and NO ONE WAS THERE though they said they would be. Phone line also wasn't working due to high call volume. General costumer service at the airport said I would have to wait another two hours till staff returned to speak with someone. Will not be flying with Air Canada again.
