While the staff were overall very nice, I'm surprised this hotel had such positive reviews on TripAdvisor. We booked this the morning we headed to Nice, and honestly my boyfriend (who is far pickier than i with hotels) decided on this one due to positive reviews. When we arrived, the place seems very old and not so clean, but quaint and quirky, like a B&B of sorts.
They had an elevator so that was a nice surprise as i suspected being so old it might not...but sadly this is where the positives end.
They don't have internet - charge to use the lobby computer, and if you want to pay for wifi, you cant even do it through them but through a local internet provider (not cheap). The rooms, as the rest of the hotel, are very old and don't feel very clean...however, the 2 stars (which if the staff weren't nice, I'd have given rather than 2), is due to the other details...the bed had an old school comforter, which always scares me, and they don't provide you simple basics, such as cups. Not plastic, not glass, no cups whatsoever. They also have no plastic shower curtain, just the cloth one, so water gets all over the floor, and since the floor is old and with grout, the hair and dirt appears hidden, but still is there.
One employee recommended the hotel splendid across the way for happy hour on their rooftop bar - the owner of gounod also owns it. Sadly, they don't even have a happy hour, so that was a waste of precious happy hour time (when happy hour was almost over). He also gave us some other incorrect information, but the older man who we checked in and out with was sweet. Were we not getting the f out of here for the hotel suisse, i'd have told my boyfriend to inform not so friendly and very misinformed clerk that there's no happy hour at splendid so thanks for that recommendation - along with the others that were similarly wrong and slipping my mind at the moment.
Also quite a few blocks from the beach if you think you'll be rolling right out of bed and strolling to the beach...and apparently the owner doesnt want to give anything away free (per another employee) - guess that explains the lack of absolute essentials such as cups (and more than 2 towels, etc). Even the minibar was completely empty, which while we didnt want anything from one, i'd still think they'd splurge on to then charge you up the ass for. read more
