Update: I do want to add that I did get a new iPad which was paid for by the hotel after mine was stolen from my room. I would have liked to try it again on my next trip, but my colleagues were not agreeable after our last stay. The room prices are much higher than they were during construction, so we opted for another Marriott property in Cannes.
This is a tough review because of my unique experience. Overall, bad, bad, bad - but I added a star because of the excellent way the General Manager resolved a serious problem. A colleague and I stayed here for a business trip because it's part of the Marriott chain. Upon arrival, we suspected problems when we had to step around debris to find the lobby under construction and a sign directing us to the rear lounge, serving as temporary check-in. At €139, rooms were cheap for a "4 star" hotel a block from the beach; I'm sure they will double when the remodel is finished and summer holidays arrive and folks are flocking to the Cote de Azur.
The room: my 1st floor room has already been remodeled and looks nice & clean. The bed was comfy with lots of pillows and a clean duvet. Pergo floors look nice, but the bed tends to slip about. Reading lamps by the bed don't work. A college dorm-style mini-fridge is plopped under the desk area, was unplugged and held no bottled water. The remote doesn't turn the wall-mounted TV on or off, but does control channels and volume. My window overlooked the roof of the restaurant. The window was bolted closed, so I couldn't get any fresh air. The automatic door closer wasn't adjusted properly, so the door didn't close securely when I left my room for dinner the 1st night. When I returned 3 hours later my iPad was missing. Fortunately, the thief left behind my company laptop, camera, Bose headphones and other belongings. I immediately called the front desk clerk; she unapologetically told me I would have to wait until 9AM to see the manager when he arrived. Hmmm. When I used the "Find My iPhone" app and discovered it was still in the hotel, I dashed downstairs to see who was in charge!
The bathroom: outfitted with shiny new, but un-functional fixtures, the shower door is only 1/3 the length of the shower and its basin is only 1" deep. Combined with the slow drain and hand-held shower head mounted at the top of the fixture, it's impossible to not soak the floor. The vanity sink is also very shallow and hangs level, so it drains poorly. The faucet spout is so short it barely reaches the basin, so it's difficult to get your hands under the water. The hand soap is shaped like a golf ball and rolls of the vanity to the floor unless you use the box as a soap dish.
The amenities: the underground garage has small spaces and it was hard to park due to all the construction materials being stored. The lobby/lounge has a small bar, fireplace, TV and comfortable seating with service available around the clock. Internet service is $12 per 24 hours and the wifi worked well. I ordered room service once - a croque monsieur, fries, salad & mineral water and the food was fresh, hot and tasted good.
The staff: with a few notable exceptions, not very hospitable. However, the night manager - a very nice "Inspector Closeau" - made a valiant effort to catch the thief as he & a colleague searched each floor at the end of the hotel where the app said the iPad was located. Unfortunately, the thief got away, but the next day the General Manager immediately had all doors inspected and fixed. Then he stunned me by paying for a replacement iPad!
Regarding construction: it is 8PM as I write this and I'm listening to the ever-present sound of tapping hammers, interspersed with the whir of power tools, from the floor below. Unfortunately, the noise begins at 7AM and continues until the construction workers get bored and go home - or wander the halls looking for an iPad to steal. Consider this before booking a room until renovations are completed! read more
