Probably one of the largest Vietnamese spots I've been to in NJ. It has a dark and moody decor, more akin to a lounge. They have a full bar. Service was good, food was as well. It's been a while since I've reviewed Hen. In my opinion, it is the best Vietnamese restaurant in South Jersey or Philadelphia. And with that being written, I have been to quite a few Vietnamese restaurants on both sides of the river. The menu is varied without being too big. I believe over the years we have tried most of the menu and everything has been fresh and delicious. We recently tried the Hen wings and they might have been the best wings I've ever had. If they were not the best, they were certainly right up there. Hen is very popular and can get quite crowded during the evenings and on weekends. This is place is located at the small shopping plaza right outside my in-laws' subdivision. We never stopped for the last seven years since they opened. Came in for a pre-Xmas celebration with my wife's cousins from Honk Kong. We talked to the host and ordered a bunch of signature appetizers and dishes: Banh Khot, Banh Yeo, Hen pho, Mi Quang, Bo Luv Lac, and Bun Bo Hue. Amazing food and even more amazing service! I have heard so many good places about Hen's, but I never wanted to make the trip out across the bridge. I'm so glad that I was in the area and all my cousins recommended me to just go to Hen's. Thankfully I came at an off time, because my kids were a little crazy. But, Sang (owner) makes sure to take care of you like family. He made sure to let you know the kids weren't an issue and kids were just being kids. What a gem!! Totally worth the destination date night drive!! The restaurant itself is beautifully decorated and clean. The staff is super friendly and knowledgeable, if you are not familiar with the cuisine. But the food itself... one of the best pho broths I have had. The pho was decent though I am not a huge fan of the broth. This place is on the trendier side. One of my only gripes is the portion size for protein entrees. Four stars are for the food, I would've given it five if it was a bigger portion. You could count the pieces of meat, but it was absolutely well-seasoned and tender. I'm keenly aware of the increased price of everything in the world, perhaps that's the best they can do with offering filet mignon, I don't know. I would've taken more onion more anything. Add some vegetables to it, I don't know, but bulk it up. I had to pull out soy sauce because on top of it being such a small amount of the entrée there was barely any sauce. I have high blood pressure. I'm actually on medication for it, I don't pull out additional salt for food. But I need something to choke down this white rice. The only thing annoying was that they kept the door open and there were flies flying around in the restaurant. Ordered a bowl of Pho with Beef Balls and Beef Brisket, Caramelized Swai in Clay Pot which came with a bowl of rice, and Sugar Cane Shrimp Paste Skewer which came with lettuce and rice paper for wrapping. Food was very good. The pho broth was clean and tasty. I especially enjoyed the Sugar Cane Shrimp Paste with the wraps. Service was good. Hen ever since they opened used to be my favorite place to eat and every time we have guest from out of town - this has always been our go to but you know what, they have been really not been on top of getting things right when you order. Food is usually solid but they leave out entrees (we've had to drive back to get it-so check before you leave), also they overpromise on when the food will be ready. The prices here are definitely higher than Philly/South Philly Viet spots The fries are perfectly fried, possibly double fried, but probably not worth the $10 IMO - couldn't taste any saffron in their saffron aoli dip. The swai was really delicious, perfectly flakey - and the caramelized sauce was very good - perfect pairing to a bowl of white rice. I've been going to this restuarant since around 2019. It is one of my two favorite Vietnamese restaurants (the other one is in NY). From the very beginning, the staff has been friendly and attentive. The restaurant is clean and has a good vibe. Derrick was the first person I met when I started going to Hen. He's a hard worker, extremely nice, and remembered me even after the first visit. That's always a plus. About a year ago, I moved out of the country, so I've been missing the flavors at Hen. During a recent visit to the area, I had a chance to revisit the restaurant and introduce some other friends to Hen and Vietnamese food. They all loved it as much as I do. The entire staff from Cindy, to Andrew (Cindy's husband who does the majority of the cooking), to Hong (their son who also cooks), to Derrick, and Young (sorry, those are all the names I remember), is very friendly and seek to provide a delightful experience. Andrew asked me how it feels to eat the food at the restaurant a few nights ago. My answer was happy. Over the years, I've had several dishes from the restaurant (and recently, the hot vietnamese coffee, which was delicious, by the way.). I've yet to be dissapointed. The food quality is consistently good. Watch out for the wings, though. They are addictive! By the way, if you're in the Neptune area, they have a restaurant there as well. Good people. Good food. I was so excited about my first experience at Hen's that I highly recommended going there with my family. I understand it was a Saturday night and they were very busy so waiting 20 minutes for a table wasn't too bad. However from there it went downhill. I felt completely ignored for the first 15-20 minutes after sitting down. I had to wave down two different servers to ask for water which at that time we ordered an appetizer while looking over the menu and figuring out what we wanted to order. Again no one stopped by our table to ask if we had any questions or if we were ready to order. I understand they looked short staffed but other tables were being spoken to and tables who sat down after us got there food before we even got our appetizer.
