Hand Rolls and El Diablo Roll w/ Mix Tempura
    Ismael P.

This is my favorite spot in North County to get sushi! The ambiance is relaxing and feels like you are in Japan with all the various memorabilia. The sushi chef is always friendly and greets everyone as they walk in. The service can be slow at times, but mainly when it is busy. I love getting the El Fuego Roll and El Diablo Roll! They have so much flavor and are spicy. The nigiri is also really good. My favorite is the salmon nigiri. It is always fresh and fatty. I recommend their mixed tempura and fried gyoza for the appetizers. I also love their lunch or dinner combos where you can get bento box specials with beef, chicken, or salmon teriyaki. There are so many good dishes here and I love their sushi! The friendliness, decor, and fresh sushi are what make this place a hidden gem in San Marcos! I will be back soon!

I love hyuga sushi sm. Great prices for the quality. One of a kind ambiance. Family owned and family run. If you're lucky enough to go while they're open, you win

We celebrated my son's bday on sat June 1 and had a wonderful dinner. The ambiance is welcoming and full of interesting anime posters and figurines. There's old Hollywood classic movie posters scattered on the walls and a great playlist of rock , jazz playing in the background. It reminds me of a local hole in the wall Japanese food cafe We had excellent service and our dishes were fresh and enjoyed by all of us. I ordered the salmon and tempera bento box. Kids ordered soba noodles and the Saba fish plate. We also ordered the sushi assortment plate and two specialty rolls. Miso soup was served with the dinner entrees and was delicious. I opted for the salted salmon instead of teriyaki on my bento box and it was delicious. The tempura was generous. Two shrimps and an assortment of root veggies. I prefer a lighter crispier batter fry but still was good. The sushi was fresh and rolled with a good balance ratio of rice & goodies , cut in to several one -bite size potions. Making it easy to eat and savor Many sushi places cut the rolls into chunky large sizes and it's difficult to eat with one fell swoop of your chop sticks. We ordered green hot tea and it was served by the mug with a tea bag. Not in the traditional tea pot. Still good. Prices are reasonable 5 of us it was $150.

    2. Sake Teri Bento Box Lunch Special

Food was amazing, I got the salmon bento box and it was very filling. tasted like it was made with love. The environment was nice seeing all the anime memorabilia and unique collection of the store owner. Service was top notch, 10/10 and the server was very caring and brought us only the best. Couldn't recommend this place enough

    Lots of posters in here!

Got recommended to try out this place, which I will admit that I felt skeptical because their operating hours were a bit weird. But I decided to try it out on a Saturday evening. The place is a little small but there were still enough seats around and we sat at the bar. We ordered three nigiri (maguro, tamago, and Kura), two special rolls (Special Albacore Roll and Las Vegas Roll), and a regular sushi roll (spicy tuna roll). I will say I was actually quite impressed with the taste of them! This definitely is one of those authentic Japanese sushi restaurants as their rolls are smaller, which I actually prefer! And they actually add wasabi in their nigiri, which many sushi restaurants do not do. And the chef and everyone is Japanese! If you actually want some authentic Japanese food, I highly recommend giving this place a try! Make sure to check their operating hours before coming since they don't open all day. And there is a good amount of parking spots in the area so it shouldn't be too hard to find parking.

I moved away for a while, but I still like to come here. I love the fact that this is a truly authentic restaurant. The chef has been serving his food and cultivating his atmosphere, and it shows. I love the simplicity and uniqueness of this restaurant, even 8 years later. I saw the recent negative reviews, and I feel some yelpers are becoming divas. This isn't a Michelin-starred restaurant. There are very few of those in the world. I'm not Gordon Ramsay with extensive nonsense critical ability and training to back up my audacity. I'm just a regular guy who likes simple yet good food. That's why I like it here.

Still our favorite hole in the wall Japanese restaurant! The sushi is on point. The staff is friendly. A great selection of affordable beers. It's our go to Japanese/sushi!

Hey hey they're open for takeout! Although it rarely comes to anyone's mind to order sushi takeout during a pandemic, don't forget Kuro-san's kitchen makes very nice bento boxes and combo lunches too and they're such a bargain! We wanted to support them because we love this place, so one lunch time we decided to order food there. I got their katsu with tempura combo and my hubby got his favorite sesame chicken lunch special. Oh wow, they packed our food soooo nicely in many separate containers! (We felt bad for all the plastic being used...) for my combo, one box was the katsu and rice, the other for tempura, another for California rolls, another one for salad and a bowl for miso soup....! Husband's special also came with 4 containers. When he came home, he had two giant bags of food even though we only ordered two lunch combos haha! Their food had always been amazing, and it didn't disappoint us for our first takeout experience!! Support Hyuga and stay healthy everyone!

The sushi was pretty fresh and good (tuna belly, uni and sweet shrimp) except the scallop tasted a bit off, like fizzy. Rolls were yummy and smaller than other places I've had but I enjoyed the balanced portions. Reasonably priced. Overheard the chef has been here for 15 years. It felt like supporting an authentic mom-and-pop business which is always a plus. Unfortunately one person in my party got food poisoning that evening but I was fine.

    Albacore roll without albacore, again!

Our party of two waited about 20 minutes on a Friday night with no reservation. It was quite busy that day with many other tables waiting to be sat. There are a lot of options on the menu, ranging from cooked items to sushi and rolls. After placing our order, it took only about 10 minutes before we received the first dish and everything else followed. We ordered a roll the sashimi set a hand roll and also a bowl of ramen. Their salmon and engawa was tasty, but I wouldn't say their fish is the freshest or have much flavor to them. Unfortunately, we had an issue with our spicy tuna roll (there was a piece of metal found inside). I'm sure it was just overlooked. But service was very friendly and accommodating. They immediately remade our roll and also provided some complementary dessert. The service here was quick and friendly. I appreciated it given how busy the restaurant was.

My first trip to Tabu Sushi was during the pandemic, and I don't remember enjoying it that much. But, I also attributed those faults to the take-out experience; nothing survives packaging, travel, and dining 30+ minutes after plating and still maintains its peak level of flavor. So, I vowed to eventually come back and give Tabu another shot. First off, I kind of dig the interior. For some reason, it gives me 80's vibes; Tech Noir, but with a few plants and higher ceilings. Dive bar sushi restaurants have always been a thing I've enjoyed, and Tabu just skirts that line. My son and I came here for dinner and they seated us close to the entrance, sunlight pouring through the windows in the late afternoon, making the atmosphere bright and open. I started with an Oyster Shooter, while not the best of these I've ever had, it still had that freshness to it, the hint of brine and citrus overtones, while not being too oily or fishy. Pretty good. My son did most of the ordering, supplying the table with a Dragon Roll, Baja Roll, and an Atlantic Sea Roll. These were all okay. Sometimes the fish used was mealy. Sometimes the technique was loose, causing the rolls to easily fall apart. But, each was still enjoyable with the tastes being satisfying, if not really overly impressive. The true surprise was the Bubba Gump Roll. The sautéed shrimp on top had a fantastic bite and delicious taste to them. And the mixture of avocado, lemon, cucumber, cilantro, and chili powder, all of it was a excellent blend of crunchy and smooth textures, spicy and cooler flavors, and fatty and acidic notes. After everything else we had sampled, I was not expecting something this good when I ordered it. Still, with as good as that roll was, it was not enough to elevate Tabu Sushi past a strong three stars in my eyes. Above average but only just. With as many other sushi restaurants nearby that I prefer, coming back here may not be in the cards for me. But, I would still say it's very much worth a try if you're nearby and hungry.

Some of our favorites so far are the Escondido roll, Dynamite roll (definitely one of our top picks), Dragon roll, and the asparagus tempura roll. We'll sometimes add a spicy California roll too. On colder days, I love getting their miso soup or spicy tonkatsu ramen, you can even switch out the protein for an extra charge, which is a nice option. My husband usually goes for the chicken katsu curry, and I really enjoy the beef yakisoba or the teriyaki salmon. So if you're in Escondido definitely give them a try!

If waiting were an Olympic sport, this restaurant would be taking home the gold medal every year…read more I've given this place chance after chance over the last year, hoping each visit would be the one where everything finally clicked. Instead, it's become a masterclass in patience. The employees seem to have discovered the secret to unlimited break time because every visit they're either in the front or the back enjoying conversations while customers stand around wondering if they've accidentally become invisible. When I judge a sushi restaurant, I keep it simple: miso soup and a basic roll. If you can't make the opening act exciting, I'm probably not sticking around for the encore. Unfortunately, the miso tasted like someone waved a seaweed packet over hot water and called it a day, and the basic rolls had all the excitement of eating cardboard with a gym membership. Then there's the outside food policy. Apparently, if your toddler dares to nibble on a chicken nugget from next door while the rest of the family orders sushi, the Food Police are ready for action. You could walk in wearing a tuxedo made of hundred-dollar bills and order the entire menu, but one tiny bite of outside food? That's apparently the culinary equivalent of a federal crime. The strange part is that the restaurant actually has potential. The problem isn't the building... it's the complete lack of urgency. Watching customers wait while staff casually chat feels less like dining out and more like watching a sitcom where everyone forgot they're supposed to be working. After a year of giving this place more second chances than a reality TV contestant, I'm officially done. If you're in Escondido, do yourself a favor: spin around, point in a random direction, Google "sushi near me," and you'll probably find a place where the staff remembers customers exist. I genuinely wanted to like this restaurant. Unfortunately, the service disappeared faster than the flavor in the miso soup.
