This is a peculiarly quaint coffee shop. My wife and I enjoy hometown coffee shops in a world of franchised, over-exalted coffee "houses." Hyperion Espresso has made their own unique flavor in the area both in taste and atmosphere. The feel is great, the staff are polite, and the price is perfect. Additionally, the name interest me. Hyperion was one of twelve titans whose name means the "high one." He was the father of the sun, moon, and dawn. Nevertheless, this does not help discern why the coffee shop is named this. I've gone 3 times now in the last 2 months and I'm in love. I ordered a cinnamon vanilla latte with almond milk and it was so good. Better than Starbucks. To start, I want to say that I generally enjoy this place. I've been coming here for a couple of years and have generally always had great service and great coffee. However, I had an experience a couple of days ago that will prevent me from going back for the foreseeable future. I ordered a large iced latte. Hyperion labels their larges as "quad shots" meaning 4 shots of espresso. I happened to be standing right in front of the counter as the barista made my drink and here is where my concern started. The cup that my iced latte was going to be put into was like 95% full of milk and ice. I thought "Hm, going to be tough to fit 4 shots of espresso in there with hardly any room left" but I waited to see if maybe she'd pour some out to make room or something. Nope, when she went to pour my espresso, it was hardly a single shots worth. When I saw that I definitely wasn't going to get the right amount I said to her "Hey are you sure that's 4 shots of espresso?" and she quickly said "Yes". I'm not one to give service industry people a hard time but I was very frustrated. I took my $7 large glass of milk and left the store. To prove a point to myself, I walked down the street to Agora (a great coffee shop) and ordered a double espresso. The double I got from Agora was easily double the volume of espresso that went into my "Quad" iced latte from Hyperion. I really hope this is just an oversight from a possibly new employee. I have emailed the Hyperion team with my complaint and I will update this review if it gets a timely response. But until then, I will not be going back. It's crazy to market a drink as a Quad, charge $6-$7 for it, and then barely put a quarter of the espresso in the drink. read more

Two stars only for the incredibly friendly staff. Otherwise, I've rarely been so disappointed in a coffee shop. Don't come here if you're looking to get any work done. Why are the power outlets taped over? Why is there no WiFi? While most coffee shops are happy to host students/workers and their business, Hyperion clearly would rather serve as an airport coffee bar (although come to think of it, most airport coffee bars have outlets and WiFi, so maybe I should just head over there) .I just feel silly that I found that out AFTER purchasing a drink and pulling out my laptop. Speaking of the drink, why is the drip coffee so weak? Just because I'm not looking for fancy sugary espresso beverages doesn't mean I don't want my coffee to taste like it came from the Sheetz. I used to come here frequently when I lived in Fredericksburg and I still like to stop in when I'm passing through. It's a quirky little place with a varied crowd and good people watching. I don't drink coffee so I can't rate it, but they have the usual variety of teas plus some seasonal drinks such as hot apple cider, hot chocolate, etc at different times of the year. There are a variety of snacks to eat also, cookies, marshmallow rice crispie treats, protein brownies, biscotti, scones, etc. They have indoor and outdoor seating, the artwork on the walls is cool. You can't miss the mural of their logo, a huge rendition of Hyperion. Lots of papers to read, staff is helpful, they will ask you to observe the etiquette rules they have posted if you are being an ass! They have free Wifi also. All in all a cool little to hang out in while in downtown Fredericksburg. read more

First of all I should have written a review a long time ago... we have been coming here since 2004. It was my sister's favorite coffee shop when she was in Mary Washington. The atmosphere and the coffee were top notch and definitely five stars. I have come here when we pass through and I've come here with field-trips of teenagers. I've come here for business meetings, and to grade papers Today was the first day where it was mostly empty. I agree with the previous reviews that said it looks like it needs some renovation and updates. They also got rid of their smoking section with lots of signs saying they support heath (one in every window is overkill). It also takes away from the storybook coffee shop aesthetic. Then they have signs about the etiquette of the cafe. Most of these things are common sense and it is unnecessary and almost passive aggressive to have them laminated and posted everywhere. A list of rules often makes people want to break them. Also, it takes away from the kind atmosphere that existed here in the past. I am not sure what is going on but I look forward to coming back and changing it back to my 5 memories. read more

Let's learn to be alittle more friendly. I can understand the no dogs or cats or horses or cows in a place. But Here's a little lesson a bearded dragon on someone's shirt isn't going to attack or bother anyone. And when you feel the need to walk up to a child and tell them "no animals allowed, get out" be a little more friendly about it. To make my child leave while we have already been standing in a long line for a while and wait for us to get up to you to tell him to leave, then make him cry is unacceptable. The coffee and tea was amazing! The artwork around the cafe was fun to see and would have made great photo opportunities. I had ordered the peppermint tea. I appreciated that they had pre-steeped tea for quick service and steady flavor. The barista took my order and accidentally spilled the entire pitcher and almost slipped on the spill. If you've read any of my reviews, you know I love a downtown atmosphere. Recently I've taken to walking to Hyperion from a friends house, who lives downtown. It's always so hard to choose what is like because they have all of the syrups, but I started copying my friend and ordering a dirty chai. First of all, I like that they have a description of what each drink is, written on their menu board. All coffee drinks tend to just have a tiny difference, so it's helpful to insure you get what you want. A dirty chai is a chai tea latte with a shot of espresso in it, and it's amazing. I get mine with soy milk, extra sweetness and at kid temperature. I don't have the patience to wait for my drink to cool off, if I want coffee, I want it now! After having come here for a few weeks and both ordering the dirty chai, I noticed today that it was added to the menu- that's exciting! And now others who may not have ever heard of it, can order the drink, too! The only reason I didn't give them 5 stars, is because the pastry counter is very lackluster. Everything just tastes like something you could pick up at wawa, except for the coffee cakes, which are always super moist. When I want a pastry I go around the back of the building and get one from Here and Abroad. One other thing, I don't love how their etiquette sign says not to stay long during peak hours. If I have a coffee date, I don't want to be rushed out of an establishment because they don't have ample seating to accommodate the rush. Me and my friend were driving from PA back home to Virginia beach, when we decided to get a coffee for the rest of the trip. I am happy we found this place. I love the vibe and overall energy of this coffee house. It is what you expected from a local coffee place near a campus. There are locals at tables studying and reading papers. The staff were inviting and friendly. I did not feel rushed to get my order (although they were super busy at the time). The choices of coffees and flavors were plentiful. Placing my order was quick and efficient as they take cards. I got my coffee in a reasonable amount of time. It was warm (not very hot though), but so good. I could vision myself here more frequently if I lived in the area. I will definitely visit here again when passing through. read more

Hyperion is a pleasant little coffee shop right in downtown Fredericksburg. There's more seating than it might appear from the outside, and I love the vintage interior for sure. I appreciate that there are several varieties of iced tea available including PEPPERMINT. If you haven't tried peppermint iced tea, you're not really living life, because it is refreshing as hell on a hot day. I also appreciate that tea is served unsweetened which can be a rarity. There are some baked goods of the muffin/croissant variety which were decent enough. The staff - not particularly pleasant. A local favorite in Fredericksburg, Hyperion fulfills the criteria for the quintessential neighborhood coffee house. The only thing missing are live events and local art posted on the walls. Free wi-fi and ample seating for laptoppers, casual gatherings, and regulars Fresh pastries baked in house (the daily coffee cake and bacon/cheddar scone are noteworthy) as well as support of other local vendors such as sandwiches prepared from Foode a few blocks down the street Excellent location located at the heart of the historical downtown district on a semi-hill overlooking the Rappahannock River, excellent for a pitstop while strolling through the old city or a place to perch oneself on the patio to see and be seen. Friendly service and charming interior- the spacing and partitioning of the the main counter and the adjacent seating area strike the perfect coexistence of intimate and spacious. In terms of the coffee drinks, it all comes down to the baristas. I have no doubt they have quality product but how to turn those beans into the perfect cuppa depends on the experience and fastidiousness of the barista. Too much of either can lead to attitude and pretentiousness whereas too little leads to inconsistency or worse, failure to deliver the intended end product. I would have to say based on the age and general temperament of the baristas, they err on the side of inexperience with good intentions, so if you're itching for a serious cup of joe, don't expect the best but mixed/flavored drinks can be more forgiving. The perfect example is my go-to drink whenever I am in need of a caffeine fix downtown, the mocha. I've had enough fine examples to be self-admittedly snobby about the fact that I prefer high quality chocolate rather than chocolate syrup pumped out of a bottle since I prefer the chocolate to take a backseat to the expresso rather than a coffee dessert beverage. Hyperion does something seemingly blasphemous but with a tinge of genius in that they steam chocolate milk to make their mochas so that the chocolate is already infused within the milk and is not as cloying as using chocolate syrup directly and I'd like to think that the rapid heating of the chocolate milk alters the flavor to produce an almost caramelized chocolate flavor distinct from its humble origins. Not the best mocha but definitely an improvement from the standard. In conclusion, come for the people-watching and ambience, stay for the mochas. read more

What I love about visting rural VA is being able to find truly charming and remarkable coffee shops like Hyperion Espresso. Located right on the main thoroughfare in town (William Street) on a prominent corner, the windows afford a lovely view of the downtown action. It is like stepping inside of a Norman Rockwell painting: the snow-lined streets, the table of several older gentleman from the town shooting the breeze as the early morning slowly passes away, the barista taking that extra moment between customers to exchange a smile and make sure the order has been perfectly filled, all lend a sense of undeniable charm to this place. The nonfunctional balcony and the yellow and mauve coloring scheme, additionally make for a quasi-European feel to the place. It is homey and comfortable. I ordered a venti of their Kenyan coffee and a chocolate croissant. The coffee was fine, and their croissant flaked beautifully. The liberal use of quality chocolate punctuated my pastry oh so well. I am usually a generous Yelp reviewer, but was very disappointed by a recent visit to Hyperion Espresso. My wife and I each ordered a cafe au lait. However, instead of adding espresso with whipped milk, the barista simply added regular coffee and then dumped the whipped milk in. The disappointing result was a tasteless, watered down version of a cafe au lait. Perhaps this was a mistake? When I noted the problem with the cafe au lait, the barista looked at me with an annoyed expression and said he could top it up with regular coffee. Yuck. Although the atmosphere seems pleasant (it was full of university students), I would go elsewhere if you're looking for gourmet coffee. Maybe I should have ordered a regular drip coffee instead. In any case, I would avoid the cafe au lait as this place does not know how to make this (nor cares). Next time I'm in town, I will go to Starbucks or FoodE instead to find high quality coffee. I grew up in Fredericksburg, Virginia, which is a fading town built on the banks of a shrinking river at the very tippy-top of our country's Southern country. The historic port has all the careful charms of a Colonial tourist's weekend, and dozens of antique malls wedged into the aged mortar buildings here, to keep it held together as best it can be held together. You won't find a Starbucks within miles of Hyperion Espresso, on Princess Anne Street in downtown F'Burg, and there is a reason for this: there doesn't need to be any other place in town to get your coffee. Hyperion ticks every box, from top-notch business acumen and service with a smile, to outstanding quality in products both bean and bread, to community service by way of available public announcements and old-fashioned elbow rubbing. I haven't lived in the Burg since 2005, but no trip home is complete without at least two stops at Hyperion. I was glad to see that they are weathering the Covid storm as best they can, and it was heart-wrenching to have to stand outside while I waited for my old standard, and a large bag of beans, to go. I look forward to taking up room on one of the welcomed, rickety outdoor benches next time I pass through. read more

This is my go-to place when visiting Fredericksburg! I have been very happy with their selection and prompt service.

We stopped in for coffee and a treat after an evening of restaurant hopping in Downtown F-Burg. We've always heard such positive things about this coffee shop and seen all the people in it, but have never stopped... don't know why we never stopped, but wish we would have sooner - it's a great place! The espresso is done nicely, their prices are VERY fair and they give quad shots standard, starting at their medium size, unlike the expen$ive national chain that charges more for that many shots. The folks working when we went were very nice and engaged us in conversation while we were waiting for our drinks. Can't wait to go back! Good thing we live close by! read more
