Beautiful and well appointed in every manner, the Hydrangea House Inn is the perfect place for an anniversary getaway. It is walkable to the wharfs and downtown areas, next door to the art museum, and right on the main bus line. The staff is incredible paying attention to every detail. Definitely the nicest inn to stay at out of all the inns on Bellevue! The room with the jacuzzi is very much worth it!! Such a beautiful old inn. Parking is also free when you stay here which is extremely rare when you stay at a hotel/inn in Newport. My husband and I stayed Sun-Wed in October. The staff was very helpful and friendly. The location was great and walkable to everything. Also, a very quiet street. We had free parking. The breakfast was so delicious and all the pastries were house made. A different breakfast everyday. 2 times available:8:30/9:30. It was a beautiful set table and sit down style breakfast. The breakfast was very accommodating to your specific needs if expressed to them. The happy hour was a nice benefit. They served red or white wine, water, cheese, meats, olives, artichokes, and crackers. Different cheeses served daily. Always a coffee maker out for coffee and tea. Water and sparkling water supplied in your room. In the evening there were homemade chocolate chip cookies. All delicious! The room we had was small, but it was fine. I did not give it 5 stars for the reason of some of the furniture in the room seemed in poor cosmetic shape and the wall to wall carpet in our room and halls seemed stained and dirty. My husband and I stayed at the Hydrangea House Inn over Labor Day weekend. We checked in on Friday and out on Monday. A few things are fantastic about this Bed and Breakfast, the location, the breakfast and the free parking! A few other nice things that the B&B includes are a daily wine and cheese happy hour at 4:00, cookies provided at the turndown service, water and sparkling water provided in your room each day with housekeeping. The service is spot on as well, some people do not like B&B's because the owners or managers are in your business; here, they are there to help but not crowd. The decor and rooms are nice but definitely not high end. This is why I did not give 5 stars. I had a wonderful experience and would definitely stay again but it's not a 5-star stay. read more

My husband and I choose a bed and breakfast in a new city each year to celebrate our wedding anniversary. This year was Newport, Rhode Island and the absolutely loved our stay at Hydrangea House Inn. Breakfasts were delicious (I forgot to get a photo all three mornings!), wine and cheese happy hour each day at 4pm, room was clean and quite charming, shower and tub were amazing and so relaxing! Not sure who the owners were, as we encountered several different people, but all were friendly. Great location. Everything in Newport was pretty close. We were able to walk to many places. There is a lovely winery about 10 minutes away if you want to enjoy a glass of wine, snack, and beautiful scenery. I would definitely recommend this bed and breakfast if you're spending some time in Newport. read more

Communication Cleanliness Help Someone at the front desk Better doors and locks. Paid over $400 for a one night stay. Only to come into the room and see all of this. Remotes in various hidden locations. Hot tub starts up whenever it wants. (It started the air 3 times while not in use) the cheap wood around it was falling off. Broken steam shower. Filthy toilet & sink. Nobody to be found at front desk 3 times. Back door doesnt work. Door to our room didnt fit the frame, you could see over and under it. Breakfast was decent enough, though they forgot to bring me a coffee (it was only my wife and i) my wife ordered a cranberry juice and she got orange juice. (Again it was only us) a plate on my place setting was stuck to it because it was dirty from something. The next day someone claiming to be the former owner said he was embarrassed and had another person on the phone to complain to. I have a feeling he WAS the actual owner. Said they sent a return email to me. They did not. Said they would call me and "make it right" . They did not. If you pay $400+ for a room at the very least it should be clean. They made an excuse that a maintenance man used the bathroom ... not buying it. Even if it were, you dont check the room prior to the one couple checking in at 2pm?!?!? read more

I cannot say enough good things about this fantastic B&B in Newport. I am more of a chain hotel person than a B&B person, but my experience at the Hydrangea House was incredible. The hotel is conveniently located and near at lot of great Newport restaurants and sights. They have parking behind the inn which is super convenient. We stayed in the Oak Suite and it was amazing. So romantic! A huge room with our own private entrance. Comfy king sized bed and mini fridge. Bathroom was ginormous with shower/sauna and whirpool tub. Staff was super friendly and the food was sooo good. Breakfast was incredible. Food is clearly cooked with love and made to order. I also really enjoyed the wine and cheese in the afternoons and had a great time sitting in the parlor and enjoying the happy hour. We will definitely be returning and are looking forward to our next stay! read more

10/10 recommend! We stayed in the Hydrangea Suite - very spacious room and comfortable bed, with a fun "Gilded Age" vibe. Kim was fantastic and made sure we had everything we needed for a wonderful stay. The breakfast each morning was so delicious. The location was great and allowed us to walk to everything. The cherry on top was when Kim went out of her way to get us a bottle of nonalcoholic wine to enjoy during the daily happy hour because one of us was pregnant. My fiancé and I stayed here this past weekend and absolutely loved it! The staff is professional, hospitable, and kind, and the Inn itself is clean and very well done up! The room design is consistent with the rest of the Inn, in a Victorian style. There are fireplaces in the room which make it really cozy! The Inn had delicious breakfast complete with coffee/juice, pastries, mains, and fruit. They were very accommodating of dietary restrictions. They also have a daily evening wine and cheese happy hour which was such a nice perk! Overall loved the cozy, familial, clean ambience of this place and would definitely stay here again. read more

We really enjoyed our recent stay at Hydrangea house. The room we stayed in (Carrie in Paris) was clean, ornate, and equipped with the fluffiest robes! Overall, the nightly rate was a bit pricy in my opinion, however they do include an AMAZING breakfast as well as nightly wine and cheese, which helped justify the hefty price tag. The hotel is conveniently located to downtown and across the street from a roof top bar. This is a great option if you're considering a stay here in Newport! read more

Stayed Oct 1-5. We stayed in the Hydrangea suite. We found it need of many repairs and cleaning. Furniture cushion springs completely worn out, ripped leather, wood furniture beat in need of polishing. Had a few problems with electrical. Shower old dated and parts broken. Staff needs training on cleaning room, didn't stock toilet paper or Kleenex didn't vacuum. Asked to talk with a Mgr and told there aren't any. Breakfast was done well. I love the old building but for the cost it needs some TLC. I give it 3 stars. read more

The Oak Suite smells musty -- there's clearly mildew somewhere and during this cool week without AC circulating, its presence was painfully obvious. I love everything else about this Inn. The staff is lovely and generous, breakfast is fabulous and fresh, the antiques are charming. But I shouldn't be paying premium prices for the sort of smell you expect in a bargain basement beach motel. And no one seemed to take it very seriously when I pointed this out and asked to be moved to another room (in hopes the smell was room-specific). read more

My husband and I stayed here over a cold February weekend. As soon as we arrived we were offered an upgrade from the room we had reserved, as it was off season and not fully rented. The hosts were extremely friendly and accommodating. We upgraded to the Chesterfield which was fabulous. It had an amazing shower and jacuzzi, as well as a fireplace. The location was perfect for walking around Newport and despite the cold we actually walked the cliff walk. I took some photos which are attached the rooms were extremely clean and well appointed. I only wish I took pictures of the delicious gourmet breakfast! We will definitely be back. It was like going on vacation even though we were only 30 minutes from home. read more

A charming historic property in an excellent location on Bellevue Avenue. Close to everything. The rooms or at least our room had not been renovated in decades and smelled musty and old. The suite was spacious with a large bathroom. The finishes were old like the pine top to the sink vanity. The modern sink placed above the vanity splashed on all the sides onto the pine top keeping it constantly wet. The shower was an acrylic one piece - kind of a downgrade for $533/ night. There was double stick tape from an older tray in the shower left on the walls. The bed area AC was an old fashioned through the wall unit and very loud constantly waking you up when it kicked on. The curtains on the windows didn't operate. The housekeeping staff didn't regularly provide additional towels nor take dirty dishes and glassware away. This definitely diminished the quality of the stay. Apon check-Inn the women was curt, indifferent and not very welcoming. This suite is located right off the parking lot and very poorly lit. The security was one dead bolt from a very inexpensive builder special hardware set, easily broken into. I would say despite the charm invest your vacation dollars elsewhere. Also for a traveling person or couple there was no safe in the room for valuables with the entire property dimly lit. Happy hour and breakfast was elegantly done affording an opportunity to meet new people and enjoy an historic property. read more

My mom and I decided to come to Newport for the night and we are so glad we chose to stay here! Alice greeted us as soon as we arrived and was so friendly and helpful! We absolutely loved our room. We stayed in the Verandah Room - it has its own entrance and is beautifully decorated. They offer wine and cheese in the late afternoon in the dining room. The breakfast they offered was amazing! Some kind of fried pancake with sausage and homemade yogurt. It was delicious! Grant and Dennis were so nice and we loved meeting Rosie too (their dog)! This place was fantastic, romantic. If you are coming for a couples weekend, stay here. The Oak Room has very comfortable high bed. Did I mention this place was perfect for couples. It also has a jacuzzi that we meant to get to, but didn't. The room also sports a fireplace with a cute little coach for you flame viewing pleasure. There's a a flat screen TV above the fireplace, but you won't be getting much use out of that. There's also the shower/sauna. Yes, that's right. And there is a little bench in there to relax on. Each morning a king's feast is prepared for you. We sat at the table, and conversed with the other patron's about everything from the sights in Newport to concerns about education. My husband and I stayed in the Oak Suite on our honeymoon a few weeks ago, and I was FLOORED by how astounding that room was! Not only was it lavish, comfortable, and beautiful, but it was also spotlessly clean! We only stayed one night, yet I took two showers and a bath because there's a steam shower and spa bath in the room -- who wouldn't! Sorry for wasting your water guys... Speaking of the owners, Dennis and Grant were fantastic! They helped us pick a restaurant for dinner and were generally extremely helpful. Grant was very gracious about accommodating our vegetarian menu for breakfast, so he cooked us these unbelievable cream-cheese stuffed breakfast bread puddings with blueberry compote. We could not have asked for more for our honeymoon - it was perfect! read more

This place was phenomenal! Great service, beautiful rooms and very well maintained -you can tell the owners really care that you're having a good time. The only complaint is they did not provide bubble bath for the whirlpool tub--would have been nice to have. Other than that our stay was absolutely perfect! I would love their scone recipe :-) Also, at the end of our stay one of the owners told us about select registry where you can get points/$ towards bed and breakfast stays. It was great information! When we arrived 1 hour after check in I already got a bad vibe because there was no one at the desk and then finally this woman comes around the corner wearing plastic gloves and tells us she will be there shortly. She gave a very brief run down of breakfast time and then immediately asked for our credit card. So we are ready to go to our room now and we walk up to the 3rd floor and she couldn't open the door. Said it must be deadbolted and had to go back downstairs to get a different key. We wait. She comes back and immediately upon opening the door she closes it and says "I think someone is in here"! Then after a few hellos she opens the door and states out loud that the room is not ready, it hasn't been cleaned. Best is unmade, trash on the floor, cans of soda strewn out. Now we go BACK downstairs where I am so heated now because we just wanted to relax before dinner and we've already been at the inn for 30 minutes with no room. She tells us we can wait 30 minutes for someone to get here and clean the room or stay in a different room (she showed us two different options) we settled for the other third floor room rather than a room directly across from the front desk! We get into our room and 15 minutes later she knocks on the door to give us champagne but comes right in and when we ask if the other room had a jacuzzi tub she says yes and peeks over our current tub saying "why? This one is just a regular tub? Ewww" (her words) and we also asked if the room we were supposed to get had a bigger shower because this was a one person stall and she said yes. Our new room was "ok" it's just the whole situation was very off-putting. I would never stay here again. We did get some money back from the manager in the end but it's because they knew how upset we were. read more

My wife and I took a rare weekend getaway. Newport was beautiful and I do highly recommend the mansion tours. As far as the Inn itself, the number of times we had to ask that something be made right, was disappointing. The parking lot was difficult to find and extremely tight. We were led up three flights of stairs to our room. No assistance with our bags was available. In the room we found an open half eaten plate of cookies from the previous guests. My wife went all the way back down to the desk and returned with a fresh wrapped plate of cookies and the desk keepers apologies. While she was gone I put on the TV which was in a an oddly located built in cabinet so it couldn't be seen from the bed. No worries about the TVs location though as it didn't work anyway. We decided not to hike the stairs again. We would ask that the TV be repaired in the morning. We started to fill the hot tub instead. As the water filled we noticed a film of dirt and several hairs floating on top of the water so we went to sleep after a careful inspection of the sheets as our faith in the cleanliness of the room was now lost. In the morning while we reported the inoperative TV and the filthy tub we also wanted to pay but they were unable to run our credit card. We contacted our bank to be sure it wasn't a problem on our end and were assured by our bank it was not. Finally the desk attendant had to leave the Inn with our card to go run it elsewhere. These things were corrected for the second night and the breakfast was quite good but as the saying goes you only get one chance to make a first impression. read more

My boyfriend and I had the privilege to stay in the Oak Room for a lovely early Valentines day getaway. Everything from the beautiful room to the fantastic breakfast was absolutely amazing. Not only does this room have a cozy fireplace as well as a sizable bathroom (with a Jacuzzi tub AND steam shower) but it has a private entrance right on to Bellevue Ave a short walk to many bars and restaurants. From the warm welcome to the warm chocolate chip cookies brought to our room for a pre dinner snack the Hydrangea House Inn was the perfect place to spend a romantic weekend. Grant and Dennis were fantastic and very welcoming! They made our Valentine's Day stay memorable. The Chesterfield suite was quite romantic and perfect for couples to unwind and enjoy each other for their entire stay. Key features of the room include: the fireplace, 2-person (that could easily fit 4!) jacuzzi, double shower with steam sauna, and the king- sized canopy bed. The two-tiered room was tastefully designed: first tier-- the room opens to a mini living room (outfitted with a couch that is facing the fireplace, plush seats facing the windows), on top of the fireplace is a discrete flat screen mirror TV, and on the side, is the jacuzzi; 2nd tier-- about four steps lead to the very inviting bedroom and a modern bathroom. It makes you wish that you could call the inn your home! We will definitely return and highly recommend anyone to stay at Hydrangea House Inn! read more

We stayed at the Hydrangea House Inn last summer for our anniversary and it was one of the nicest getaways we have had, since our honeymoon. We stayed in the Chesterfield Suite and it was a great choice. Bold and rich colors, canopy bed, steam shower, jacuzzi and a front view of the Inn- which made for some fun people watching. You can tell the owners, Grant and Dennis, love what they do because nothing was spared when it came to decor, breakfast and guest relations. We stayed 2 nights and because or their recommendations, we visited beautiful, private beaches, saw the (more interesting) mansions and had the most fabulous dinners. The food each morning at breakfast was unbelievable and they even surprised us with an anniversary cake one night when we came back from dinner. Our only regret was not staying longer! read more

A beautiful and elegant inn. The rooms are generously sized, with great bathtubs and large separate showers. Breakfast is fantastic--eggs in pastry with béarnaise sauce this morning, and raspberry pancake fritters yesterday--accompanied by coffee, tea, homemade yogurt, fresh baked goods, and fresh fruit. This B&B was exceptional in every way! The room was spacious, with a sitting area and fireplace. The bed was extremely comfortable with wonderful soft, high quality linens. The bathroom was spacious with a huge jetted tub, separate shower, a towel heating rack, and two lush robes. A lighted wall mounted make up mirror is always a big plus for me. The highlight of the stay is breakfast ! the dining room is elaborately set with a different china pattern and color theme for each day ! I thought I was in Downton Abbey. The breakfast entrees were different each day, but a hot cereal table, fresh cut up fruit, and a marvelous yogurt mousse whipped with orange zest served in mini mason jars were staples each day. A muffin platter was always a temptation. The first morning, the hot entree was a poached egg in a puff pastry with a tarragon hollandaise sauce. The next morning, a hot cranberry waffle/pancake with fresh blueberries. The following morning, an egg soufflé with a slight jalapeño kick to it, served with salsa. The hot coffee was excellent, and Lisa was super attentive, always watching to see if your cup needed a refill. You never had to ask for anything. Every need was thoughtfully anticipated. A totally splendid place to stay in Newport. I cannot wait to return! read more
