Ok as a former chef and one who likes to entertain, I frequent the grocery store, a lot. In addition, I've also lived all over the US, specifically the Midwest and east coast. What that has shown me, specifically in Kansas and Texas is that the grocery stores can be HUGE. In fact many go well beyond and have a multifaceted food court within them. I'm not talking about a sandwich shop and premade cooked chicken, I'm talking full service and different themed restaurants. That's where my review of Hy-Vee will begin. Now people should realize with all conveniences come drawbacks. Hy-Vee is huge, probably the largest freestanding grocery store I've been to in Kansas (sorry Texas has you beat). I will say as someone that has family from Cleveland and remaining a fan I could do without all the Chiefs and Royals gear. I mean it's annoying! Red everywhere. Ok, seriously I do respect the team pride, I'm just tired of seeing that. BTW, that's not part of my review just my irritation creeping out. What I do like is sometimes their events spill out into the parking lot; events like a huge Chiefs BBQ party, which tells me Hy-Vee likes to do special things for the community. Ok now I'd like to make my observations about food. The Asian grill is actually really good! If you nab it straight off of the flattop it's better than two Chinese restaurants around it, which shall remain nameless. I never tried the city market, Italian place, coffee store or the BBQ food but the point is, the offering is there. To be fair Hy-Vee is trying to be a one-stop shop type of center, which the tradeoff ends up being quality for convenience. In other words if I compare Hy-Vee Asian to a free standing unit, there's no comparison but if I've got a lot to get and can grab some free fried rice at Hy-Vee it's right there. As for groceries they have a rather large and diverse selection other than produce. The mushroom selection is great. Want to pick up some woodear, loose shiitake, Oyster, Enoki, etc? I really appreciate the fact I can grab my own 'shrooms rather than be limited to a prepacked assortment. Next, they do have a lot of good exotic foods to pick from. Dragonfruit, Buddha fingers, watermelon radish and star fruit are a few items you'll find here but not at smaller grocery stores. The same goes for fresh meats at the butcher and fish from the monger. My overall assessment of Hy-Vee is it works well for its target group, middle class Kansas families looking for good prices on food that is pretty standard with having some "elegances" spread out enough to allow those who are adventurous to try something new. The shelves are well stocked, the environment clean and safe, and house made items such as breads, tortillas, soups, etc are very well crafted. Finally the prices are the best in town, an advantage of being in bulk. Hy-Vee is a great grocery store for the masses! read more

Staff are always great. Bakery has went downhill fast. Donuts use to be the best in the state. But no longer made onsite so they taste like they're 3 days. Muffins. Use to be large, fresh and moist. Now, small like any random bakery, and freshness is moderate. Obviously HyVee corporate has hired another genius imbecile in attempt to increase profits but forgot about maintaining customers. The shopping carts haven't gotten smaller. read more

We stopped in to get a couple things for a meal we were going to cook. They had some really good sales going on. Dylan Y served me at the cheese counter and was extremely fast and efficient at packing the cheese while also being positive and helpful. They had lots of fresh produce and items out and the store was very clean. The self checkout was very fast, clean and simple. read more

Honestly always crowded yet never have checkers and only open one out of 2 self check areas. i never leave there feeling anything but stressed out. You have to check EVERYTHING YOU BUY FOR EXPIRATION DATE. Never fails that they always have expired products. This rarely happens at any other grocery stores. read more

Terrible store. Overpriced. Awful layout that forces you thru a stupid path that bottle necks traffic. Then once your done trying to navigate the maze and dodge the employees pushing carts around you then have to pay for those overpriced groceries but you'll have to stand in line at self checkout because they almost never have cashiers working. Hyvee want us to pay a membership for the deals as employees shop for customers not in the store and few others watch over the temporary customer/employees in the checkout doing the work the paid staff should be doing. What a racket. I've been done with hyvee for awhile but having to wait to checkout my own grocery order is beyond the limit. Screw these stores. read more

Went to the Customer Service counter and asked the young lady if I could sign up for their customer benefit card, and she went and got her Ipad and asked me to fill in all the blanks of which I did. It would not let me submit as it stated that the email was already assigned to a customer account already. So I asked her what to do next, and she handed me a piece of paper with a phone number on it to call. I asked her politely if she could go ahead and call it for me, and she acted perturbed, and I asked her if that wasn't her job to help customers, and she said that she was wanting to go on her break. I collected my groceries that I had just purchased and told her to forget it. Maybe customer service may not be the best position for her. read more

I've had a lot of problems with Hy-Vee on 151st in Olathe advertising items incorrectly in the past few years. Here is one example from about a year ago. I should have posted this then. Make sure to memorize pricing as you go through the store and compare it to your receipts. Also, check for discrepancies with their meat case, their scale, packaging, checkout, and receipts. I've found pricing mistakes on my receipts about 80% of the time when shopping at this location. The one example I have posted shows filet mignon at $11.99 for 5 oz. They routinely swap out pricing in the case and interchange pounds for ounces frequently, so it will confuse most people and you'll likely think the dollar amount is per lb if you don't look closely, especially when you check out. As you can see by the labeling, it rang up at $12.99 a piece despite the $11.99 advertised price, but then shows it is actually about $42 a lb. On the cash register, it shows 2 lbs at $12.99 which implies each steak was 16 oz when they were only 5 oz a piece. The receipt doesn't show lbs or ounces at all. It just shows the price. So, if you don't pay close attention. you won't realize there is a huge problem. You'll leave the store thinking you paid far less per pound when they are actually charging per piece. Arrow through the pictures. $42 a pound for steak is obscene. Whole Foods' filet mignon is almost $12 a pound less. . . I complained to the store director and wasn't taken seriously. I had to dispute several items on my credit card due to pricing discrepancies and Hy-Vee didn't properly investigate them through their home office. My disputes were only refunded after I went into their store, took pictures of every step, and escalated my complaint to a district manager. This location will fleece your wallet given the chance. And their customer service is terrible. They've also mishandled my priority and certified mailings multiple times. I've had to file lost mail with the post office repeatedly. The last time I was in there, their customer service rep began to label the package incorrectly and to charge me the wrong amount. Despite pointing out to her the issues, she repeatedly argued with me until I pointed to the pricing on the board. Then she called a supervisor. The supervisor tried to explain to her and she still couldn't get it right. I ended up walking out and mailing at the post office. Prior to this experience, I thought all the problems were related to the post office. Now I know HyVee has been handling them wrong. Examples of false advertising in pics included. Also, be diligent about checking expiration dates on all items in the store. They are terrible about pulling items from the shelf, especially in the gourmet cheese section by the deli, the health food market, and produce. Outstanding staff that will go out of their way to help people. I was on crutches once and the assistant dairy manager carried my basket for me, checked me out at a register and carried my groceries to the car. This isn't unusual treatment in this store! They go above and beyond. This is the closest grocery store to where I live, and whenever I travel or have to stop at a grocery store close to my office or somewhere else, I realize just how blessed we are with such a great store right in our neighborhood. read more

4 Stars overall and only 3 stars for the Hyvee Health Market. Honestly I wasn't that impressed. Yes this is a very pretty grocery store and they've really amped up their prepared foods at this location. Really they aren't offering that many new things, but improved the presentation and customer knowledge of availability. If you're eating Gluten free, you won't find a lot of options in the prepared food section. At first the salsa bar and hummus bar were appealing until I started asking an employee some questions. Turns out neither one is fresh at all. This surprised me. Why set it out in a "bar", why not just sell it in packaged containers? She said it ships to them already made, in big containers and they just dump it in. Also it's not gluten free either which makes sense because it's not fresh. They do have plenty of packaged salsa & hummus that is GF if you need that. I really expected the employees to be better prepared to answer questions and know their way around the store. The employees I talked with seemed lost & uncertain where things were. They also both had to go find out answers to my questions. I do agree with another review that the produce section is small. And the Organic produce is in the corner & tiny. Plus many of the items I considering buying weren't good. Lettuce was wilted, peppers were really wrinkled, celery wasn't firm. Maybe it's because they just opened, but you'd expect fresh produce on the first day. For the Health Market, I will say it's the largest & best selection of a conventional grocery store in town. For me, it's won't replace my trips to Whole Foods, Sprouts or Trader Joe's. Their prices are higher, $1+, on many things I buy from those other stores. Yes they have more bulk items, but I noticed quickly that not all of them are as quality as what you'd find at Whole Foods. The dried mangos and cranberries were tough. For me this will only be for last minute and convenience. I didn't visit the restaurant so I don't have anything to say about it for now. I have not shopped for groceries here, only have experienced their dining facilities. I have to say that Hy Vee has really stepped up their game. When we went for breakfast (a group of 12 ppl) the wait staff was slow to start but corrected their slow behavior quickly and served some pretty tasty food. Really the food has not changed much, it was all in the presentation. Overall, this is a legit breakfast joint. read more

The new Hy-Vee in Olathe is open and I have to say it is quite impressive. You can walk around the outside aisles of the store and never care to venture into the processed food areas with all of the great options. Pros... Huge Health food area. Drive up pharmacy. Many prepped meat and seafood items ready to cook. Huge prepared food area. Fresh made sandwiches. Spacious aisles (the store was packed and there was still plenty of room to get around.) Great staff, forget Disney, this is the happiest place in the world! Tons of variety. Parking and chargers for electric vehicles! The margarita cheese ball tasting. OMFG!!! Huge pet product area. Cons.... The produce section was small. Not a lot of check outs. (Although all were open with the store just opening, I can see it getting backed up during busy periods.) Hy-Vee is an Iowa company and when I first moved here it was a bit of home when I was homesick. There will always be love for them. With great new stores like this one, it makes the love grow. read more

This is a newer Hy-vee from what I can tell. We have no issues with it, it is always clean and the staff is very helpful. I get asked at least twice if I need help with anything every time I visit. Lines are never too long and the customer service is quick and efficient. I have had to return items with no receipt (things were opened and I didn't know) and the customer service didn't question or bat an eye. They have Wellness Wednesday's, you get 10 cents off gas for every $10 spent in the Health Section and Organic Produce is 10%. They have an extensive Health Food section, I would like to see a few other brands in there but beggers can't be choosers! I have yet to try any of the prepared foods, I don't feel like asking questions or getting sick. Bonus: there is a Starbucks in this store-which makes your grocery shopping that much easier :) read more

This is simple. They have 14 registers. They never have more than two open. There's always a line. I generally spend 10-15 minutes in line every time I go here, no matter the hour. I'm generally opposed to self-checkout, as it takes jobs away from people, but hell, if you're not going to hire them anyway, put some self-checkout counters in so you can move people through. Grocery store is great, otherwise. Their penny-pinching approach to labor is enough for me to only go there if I have to, even though it's convenient and has a great selection. read more

Since it was just the two of us this year we decided to order thanksgiving dinner from HyVee. Ugh! I'm so glad we tried this out on just us before I decided to serve it to family and guests. Do they even taste test their recipes?!? How can you ruin a sweet potato casserole?!?! It just wasn't edible. The turkey (sliced white meat) was passable, as was the sage dressing. And even the gravy was pretty good. The dinner rolls, which appeared to be squares of phylo fanned out, baked and drizzled with, allegedly, honey butter, were tasteless. Got there a half hour before closing and they decided to close up early lock their doors would not respond to customers and had a full staff standing inside the doors doing their jobs but refusing to see customers. What kind of crackpot grocery store posts midnight as their closing time and closes a half hour early? It's freezing cold out I'm grabbing stuff for in the morning breakfast and guess what... This is my absolute favorite grocery store! It's so clean and fabulous I don't know what to do with myself when I walk in. Granted, I just moved down to Southern Beigelandia from the Plaza, so really...any grocery store would be nicer than that manky Hen House on SMP, right? But I do love this place. They have everything I ever need. An awesome cheese section, a hummus bar, a salsa bar, a HUGE health food section, a nicely stocked ZUM display, a good selection of prepared foods, and a nice produce section. They even have an area with kitchen/gifty type things. The Market Grille has a great brunch on Sundays, but it's pretty pricey. Unless you're eating the expensive stuff like seafood and steak, the price is way too high for everything else. I've never eaten there another time but have always wondered if I could grab a glass of wine as I do my shopping. Probably not, right? I was initially excited about the Starbucks until I found out they charge you 30 cents for ice. No really. They do. It's on the menu in small print at the bottom. So now I just stop at the Starbucks across the street before heading to do my shopping. The only other missing thing is a Hy-Vee gas station out front to take advantage of all the Fuel Saver rewards. This is my go-to grocery spot but compared to other Hy-Vee's I used to haunt this one is just OK. In Iowa they had a liquor store attached. I know the reason they don't here is because of stupid old Kansas laws but hopefully they can get that changed soon #UncorkKS! Second why is the closest Hy-Vee gas up on 119th. They should have one closer. Last of my gripes, the Chinese food here is terrrrrrrrible. Other locations have much fresher food and better quality. Other than those few items I do shop here a couple times a week. Deli and produce is good. Meat counter is OK. Always a free cookie in the bakery. Long time ago I was in Topeka and ad said move to KC area and work for us, I did and it was the best thing I did, I enjoy the store and it's like family to me, they don't know that but it is, the store is really good and they do have good special here, it's always busy so that is good sign, staff is nice too read more

I want to thank Paul in the deli/catering department for going the extra mile to ensure he provided great customer service. I called in the morning to ask that a delivery be made about 30 miles away and he made it happen. Never did he say, "we can't do that", his response was "let me see how I can make it happen". For Valentine's Day, I purchased $90 worth of king crab legs, 2 days ago. We prepared the dinner today and the king crab were spoiled! This is the 2nd time I've purchased bad seafood from HyVee. Because it was so expensive I decided to return and the Service manager was less than thrilled. He wasn't apologetic, I brought in a sample so he could smell the ammonia, he wasn't interested until he realized how much money needed refunded. His next comment was "where's the rest of the legs?" I said, "we trashed it because it smelled." He halfed his apology and said sorry it wasn't good. I could have gotten sick, it could have ruined a valentines dinner, he didn't offer to pull the remaining seafood. Needless to say, I will never buy seafood from the 151st and Blackbob HyVee. read more

It still has that new Hy-Vee smell! And while I don't like it quite as much as the one on 95th, it's a huge huge HUGE improvement over the terrible 135th street location. The fruits/veggies section isn't huge, but has some stuff that is beyond just the basic. The bulks section is quite large - there's like 25 types of trail mix (but I struggle to find the one variety without chocolate. Murica!). They have various types of olive oils in bulk too. Hummus and salsa bars were neat, but definitely didn't look the freshest - I would skip those. I am sure the olive bar is the same with regards to freshness, but it did look good nonetheless. They have a large cheese selection, but I doubt the people working there know a whole lot about them. And of course, all of the "normal" groceries. Great store! read more

This Hy-Vee is impressive compared to the one it replaced. That said, I had no problem with the 135th Street Hy-Vee and actually quite liked the old one. It was definitely closer to my home and I liked that it wasn't the bustle of bigger stores. This one is similar to the 119th & Ridgeview location in layout and feel. If you've been there, this one won't blow you away, thought it's nicer due to its newness. It boasts a Starbucks, Redbox, florist, freshly prepared foods like Chinese and sushi... Go check it out; it's worth the visit. I just won't be going out of my way to hit it up. read more

This place should be way busier than it is. For one, the food is great. We tend to go Sunday nights for half price pizza night. I tend to get the Tuscano crust with the meat cravers and my wife gets plain cheese on thin crust. The pizzas are always generously topped and have been perfectly cooked the last couple of times we've gone. Our 3 year old twins get the free buffet where they can pick whatever they want from the hot and cold bars in the grocery area. Our family of four leaves with a lot of pizza leftovers and is fed nicely for a great price. The people are always very nice. There are over a dozen tvs around the place in case you want to catch a sporting event. They have a decent beer selection and I always can find something nice on tap... so for something close to where I live, this is also my favorite bar. I've heard from others that the other food is also terrific ("Get the quesadilla" one says frequently) but can't comment on it other than the desserts. I've had like 3 different deserts that were also all spot on. I highly recommend this place, especially taking advantage of the special each night, and family can eat fairly well for a nice price. Hopefully, we'll get to try it out on other nights too and comment more thoroughly on the rest of the food. Seriously though, give this a shot, especially on a Sunday night. read more

This restaurant is connected to the grocery store and they have beer on top, great service and good food at a reasonable price. On a side note, my parents love the senior citizens discount for breakfast. Apparently they are open 7 days a week for breakfast lunch and dinner. Also, they have 14 TVs mounted for sports watching. I caught it on a Monday night for all you can eat buffalo wings which are two thumbs up. Go for the buffalo wings because the BBQ sauce taste like meatball sauce. read more

I've been going there since they opened. It is pretty. They usually have what I want. Expensive. The staff is just lost. I get mostly "I dunno" and then they just stare. I have to say, "Well, can you find out please?" Sackers frequently put things like cans and bread together. I have to say, "I'll carry my bread please." Last time they put six cans on top of my tomatoes and the bananas on top of my bread. Only manager I have dealt with was kinda weird. I said the case of Dr. Pepper was too expensive at $8 and he responded, "K. Have a nice day." The cheese in the deli is pre-sliced and not wrapped, so it is always dried out and curling up. I have to ask them to go back and get fresh. The restrooms are nice and generally clean. The bread there is good. They sell lots of brands of organic milk. They sell Shatto flavored milk too. Lots to choose from throughout the store. Produce section seems small though. Lots of bulk stuff. Haven't liked some stuff, but it's a convenient location and it is mostly OK, so I go there. But, if I didn't have to drive all the way across town, where I used to live, I'd go to the store at 119th and Ridgeview, because the staff there are awesome. read more

Has everything! I wish they had one in Michigan... They have a grille, Starbucks, deli, health center and much more. They have great workers, help is always there when needed and they are very kind. They are a very well organized area, for a store to be honest (most have things scattered or not put in correct areas). read more

The produce section offers a fresh selection of common fruits and vegetables. The breads at the bakery are amazing! Many times I will go specifically for the bread! The cake department isn't very organized. Twice I've ordered cakes for special occasions and either didn't receive what I had ordered or they forgot to make my order and it wasn't ready when it was time for me to pick it up. The cakes are delicious, but if it is for a special event then I would go elsewhere. The freezer and refrigerated items are plentiful and easy to locate. The health food section isn't too bad either. They usually don't have enough checkout lines open, but that is the case just about everywhere. I wish they had self checkout lines! read more

I have eaten here in the past for their breakfast brunch. Always thought the food was good for what I paid, but the service has always been atrocious. I have never seen so many 'staff' in one place that don't do anything. The brunch is supposed to start at 9 am. It is 9:20 and they still don't have the omelette station ready to go. I will never come back...not because the food is bad...but because the service is horrible!! read more
