a variety of meat in a display case

I've had a lot of problems with Hy-Vee on 151st in Olathe advertising items incorrectly in the past few years. Here is one example from about a year ago. I should have posted this then. Make sure to memorize pricing as you go through the store and compare it to your receipts. Also, check for discrepancies with their meat case, their scale, packaging, checkout, and receipts. I've found pricing mistakes on my receipts about 80% of the time when shopping at this location. The one example I have posted shows filet mignon at $11.99 for 5 oz. They routinely swap out pricing in the case and interchange pounds for ounces frequently, so it will confuse most people and you'll likely think the dollar amount is per lb if you don't look closely, especially when you check out. As you can see by the labeling, it rang up at $12.99 a piece despite the $11.99 advertised price, but then shows it is actually about $42 a lb. On the cash register, it shows 2 lbs at $12.99 which implies each steak was 16 oz when they were only 5 oz a piece. The receipt doesn't show lbs or ounces at all. It just shows the price. So, if you don't pay close attention. you won't realize there is a huge problem. You'll leave the store thinking you paid far less per pound when they are actually charging per piece. Arrow through the pictures. $42 a pound for steak is obscene. Whole Foods' filet mignon is almost $12 a pound less. . . I complained to the store director and wasn't taken seriously. I had to dispute several items on my credit card due to pricing discrepancies and Hy-Vee didn't properly investigate them through their home office. My disputes were only refunded after I went into their store, took pictures of every step, and escalated my complaint to a district manager. This location will fleece your wallet given the chance. And their customer service is terrible. They've also mishandled my priority and certified mailings multiple times. I've had to file lost mail with the post office repeatedly. The last time I was in there, their customer service rep began to label the package incorrectly and to charge me the wrong amount. Despite pointing out to her the issues, she repeatedly argued with me until I pointed to the pricing on the board. Then she called a supervisor. The supervisor tried to explain to her and she still couldn't get it right. I ended up walking out and mailing at the post office. Prior to this experience, I thought all the problems were related to the post office. Now I know HyVee has been handling them wrong. Examples of false advertising in pics included. Also, be diligent about checking expiration dates on all items in the store. They are terrible about pulling items from the shelf, especially in the gourmet cheese section by the deli, the health food market, and produce. Feel free to look up their inspection results with the Kansas Department of Agriculture: https://foodsafety.kda.ks.gov/FoodSafety/Web/Inspection/PublicInspectionSearch.aspx. 33 citations for 2018 alone.

4 Stars overall and only 3 stars for the Hyvee Health Market. Honestly I wasn't that impressed. Yes this is a very pretty grocery store and they've really amped up their prepared foods at this location. Really they aren't offering that many new things, but improved the presentation and customer knowledge of availability. If you're eating Gluten free, you won't find a lot of options in the prepared food section. At first the salsa bar and hummus bar were appealing until I started asking an employee some questions. Turns out neither one is fresh at all. This surprised me. Why set it out in a "bar", why not just sell it in packaged containers? She said it ships to them already made, in big containers and they just dump it in. Also it's not gluten free either which makes sense because it's not fresh. They do have plenty of packaged salsa & hummus that is GF if you need that. I really expected the employees to be better prepared to answer questions and know their way around the store. The employees I talked with seemed lost & uncertain where things were. They also both had to go find out answers to my questions. I do agree with another review that the produce section is small. And the Organic produce is in the corner & tiny. Plus many of the items I considering buying weren't good. Lettuce was wilted, peppers were really wrinkled, celery wasn't firm. Maybe it's because they just opened, but you'd expect fresh produce on the first day. For the Health Market, I will say it's the largest & best selection of a conventional grocery store in town. For me, it's won't replace my trips to Whole Foods, Sprouts or Trader Joe's. Their prices are higher, $1+, on many things I buy from those other stores. Yes they have more bulk items, but I noticed quickly that not all of them are as quality as what you'd find at Whole Foods. The dried mangos and cranberries were tough. For me this will only be for last minute and convenience. I didn't visit the restaurant so I don't have anything to say about it for now. I"ll have to check out their menu online to see if it sounds appealing.

The pizza guy gave us some good intel on what to get and not get, and our pies were made perfectly and brought out hot to us. The bakery has a great selection of freshly made cookies, cakes and other fun items and they were all reasonably priced. I had a peanut butter explosion and the other ladies had some fun frosted sugar cookies. For me the cookies were too crumbly but they loved them. The reason for 3 stars was lack of customer service. I had to go to the front to get cups for soft drinks. The woman I approached didn't say 1 word to me when I told her what I needed. She just walked away to a register where she rang in my purchase. It would have been nice had she said, "follow me," or "I can help you with that." But i figured out what she was doing and paid at the register and then told her I had a problem. She said, "what?" with an irritated tone. I told her I needed the cups I had just paid for. Again, she walked away from me, apparently expecting me to follow her, and I did. Then she asked another employee to hand me the cups. The other woman did that and I thanked her. The cashier who rang up our few groceries was pleasant and the bagger actually joked with me, so at least I had that as I was leaving.

That said, I think most will find Hen House offers a trade off as most can get in and out a little more quickly in a smaller store while they don't get bombarded with items other than groceries however their in-house crafted food options are less diverse. Addressing the in-house made foods, I find them above average compared to other grocery stores. While I would opt away from premade pasta dishes as they tend to overcook their pasta and anything fried as sitting for a long time means they get soggy, the rest of their food is pretty good. The chicken cordon blue rolls are really good, their pies, especially the silk chocolate pie are heavenly! Oh, as with almost all grocery stores, avoid sushi as the rice crystalizes as it sits and the temperature comes down. Sushi rice needs to be warm as it juxtaposes the coldness from the fish. I mean, it's better than not having sushi but I've never been happy with getting sushi then eating at home and being happy, much less satisfied. In other words, use the right tool for the job (ie call a sushi restaurant). As for groceries they have a somewhat diverse selection other than produce. For instance, the mushroom selection isn't great. Also, they don't have 50 different apples to select from however they do have enough to satisfy the vast majority of families. As for exotic foods such as Dragonfruit, Buddha fingers, watermelon radish and star fruit, it's a hit or miss if they carry them at all. Now I've never seen any bad produce such as moldy fruit hiding in the back. They take great care in rotating their stock. Also, they have a pretty good salad bar there which I use to use a LOT. My overall assessment of Hen House is it works well for its target group, middle class Kansas families looking for good prices on food that is pretty standard with having some "elegances" spread out enough to allow those who are adventurous to try something new. The shelves are well stocked, the environment clean and safe, and the people are very friendly. The prices are the competitive but I find them a smidge higher than the larger grocery stores. Hen House is a great grocery store if it's close by and you're in a rush.

I wish it was around when I was living in the area. I would definitely be a regular customer! I visited on a quiet Tuesday afternoon, and the store was organized, neat, and easy to navigate, which was a lovely start. I had two main items on my mission: grabbing the Back to Nature Peanut Butter Creme Crackers (a snack I became obsessed with after a trip to New York!) and picking up a specific protein powder for my mom, which was on a great Buy One, Get One 50% Off deal. However, the real highlight was the service, thanks to Dahlia, a head cashier employee who stopped to help us. Dahlia was incredibly kind and went above and beyond. She walked us through the free rewards program, explaining not only how to find coupons but also detailing a huge deal: if you buy $100 or more in health & beauty products (including that protein powder!) within a three-month span, you will be able to get 30% off your next purchase. She explained that the purchases history for this deal resets after the three months are up. She even took the time to offer personalized recommendations, sharing her own experience with thinning and oily hair and suggesting specific shampoo and conditioner products for me to try. After Dahlia helped me with the rewards sign-up, I checked out with a different cashier. This cashier was also super nice; she knew I was setting up the account and proactively made sure I either entered my phone number or had my rewards barcode scanned before I paid, guaranteeing I got my points for that trip. The service didn't end there! I had a $3 off coupon for the protein powder that wouldn't go through due to the store's poor cell service/Wi-Fi connection. Dahlia, without hesitation, simply gave me $3 back in cash to honor the coupon deal--that is truly above and beyond customer service. I highly recommend this location! The product selection is great, and the atmosphere is pleasant, but the staff--especially Dahlia--is what makes this store shine.

It did have a customer service issue for a while, so I can agree with the other reviews during that time frame, but these past couple of years have actually been really great for customer service. It's always been a clean store, and they always have a selection of things that the ol' wally world just doesn't carry. They assured me they had it but weren't quite sure where it was and didn't offer to help me find it or to go get it for me since I was in the process of checking out. when they did finally tell me what aisle it was in both the checker and the sacker said they couldn't go get it for me that I have to go get it myself. I went to that isle holding up the checkout line while they just stood there twiddling their thumbs it wasn't there. When I return and told them that the Sacker said well, they must be out of it. After I checked out I went to customer service who referred me to the assistant manager after I just told her the whole story. I told it again to the assistant manager and she got it for me right away in a completely different aisle than they had directed me to before. It wasn't crowded so there was no reason why the sacker or even an assistant that was walking around couldn't go get it for me. It was one small item. They were all terribly rude. I will not return to that store. There are plenty of other grocery stores around town that seem to want to help you locate items in their store.
