Located in a very strategic location in Olathe, Hen House has most of the items you want in a much smaller facility than their competitors. That said, I think most will find Hen House offers a trade off as most can get in and out a little more quickly in a smaller store while they don't get bombarded with items other than groceries however their in-house crafted food options are less diverse. Addressing the in-house made foods, I find them above average compared to other grocery stores. While I would opt away from premade pasta dishes as they tend to overcook their pasta and anything fried as sitting for a long time means they get soggy, the rest of their food is pretty good. The chicken cordon blue rolls are really good, their pies, especially the silk chocolate pie are heavenly! Oh, as with almost all grocery stores, avoid sushi as the rice crystalizes as it sits and the temperature comes down. Sushi rice needs to be warm as it juxtaposes the coldness from the fish. I mean, it's better than not having sushi but I've never been happy with getting sushi then eating at home and being happy, much less satisfied. In other words, use the right tool for the job (ie call a sushi restaurant). As for groceries they have a somewhat diverse selection other than produce. For instance, the mushroom selection isn't great. Also, they don't have 50 different apples to select from however they do have enough to satisfy the vast majority of families. As for exotic foods such as Dragonfruit, Buddha fingers, watermelon radish and star fruit, it's a hit or miss if they carry them at all. Now I've never seen any bad produce such as moldy fruit hiding in the back. They take great care in rotating their stock. Also, they have a pretty good salad bar there which I use to use a LOT. My overall assessment of Hen House is it works well for its target group, middle class Kansas families looking for good prices on food that is pretty standard with having some "elegances" spread out enough to allow those who are adventurous to try something new. The shelves are well stocked, the environment clean and safe, and the people are very friendly. The prices are the competitive but I find them a smidge higher than the larger grocery stores. Hen House is a great grocery store if it's close by and you're in a rush. read more

What a difference in Hen House(HH) locations. I have given the HH on 83rd (Leawood) 5 stars in the past and still consider it a top pick. This location in Olathe has issues, the most irritating is the lack of consideration for customers when there are lines at the checkouts and you see 3 employees huddled shooting the s__t. I first went to the self checkout, but when the system kept saying 'Please remove the item in the bagging area' seven times, i gathered my groceries and relocated to a live cashier. I've shopped at the Olathe Hen House since the 1990s. I loved it for the quality of its food, the wide selection of products, and most of all, their friendly, pleasant staff. In recent years, I've sadly seen the quality of their produce and bakery departments in particular diminish, and the attitude of the staff has soured as well. I've even had (rarely, but memorably) empIoyees criticize what I was looking at to buy while making inappropriate comments about my body. I never thought I would see the day when Walmart had better quality produce at a far lower price than Hen House, but that day has come. I cherished Hen House's commitment to hiring persons that many companies do not consider and to accommodate customers with needs outside of the norm. Therefore, it is disturbing to see what appears to be actions being taken to discourage older persons and people with mobility problems from shopping in their store. They say that all of their actions have been taken because of theft problems. They say that this decision has nothing to do with age. They say a lot of things, but not, "we're sorry for the inconvenience." It will be interesting to see how long it will take for them to find out what others have apparently discovered--that the costs of this "theft protection" is high, not always reliable, and drives away customers. Using pickup delivery crossed my mind, but then I recalled my experience with that when I tried it. It was hit and miss with them. Sometimes, the service was great, but often the experience was marred by obviously disgruntled employees feeling resentful of bringing my groceries to the pickup area, sometimes even telling me, after I called them, that I needed to come into the store to get my groceries. I recalled other cars waiting with me for someone to bring out their groceries as well. And since this was provided through their association with Instacart, I was paying high fees for the shoppers who often got orders wrong. With this latest venture, I wish Hen House luck and hope that someday, they will choose to be the friendly, quality store I loved, but I will be watching from afar. I really like this Hen House. 1st it is the only Hen House that carries a particular probiotic that I like. It is super hard to find and this is one of only a few places in the KC Metro area that carries it. 2nd Sushi and it is good Sushi. 3rd they have double coupons. Yeah Coupons. 4th they are not sticklers for the limit of 2 or whatever. They will let you make multiple ring outs so you can max your savings. 5th Salad Bar is great. Always get to much and end up taking some home. 6th everyone is friendly and will help you find something if you can't find it. 7th Great Produce department. Everything is fresh and tasty. Prices are a bit on the high side (as all Hen House's are) however you do have a larger variety of items to choose from in the Deli and from the various food vendors. We happened to notice in the sushi aisle a fresh blue crab box and decided to try it. We are sushi aficionados and just about NEVER get sushi out of a supermarket, but we were inclined to give it a try since our appetites were small, and the "sushi chef" was at work on rolls. So we figured that it couldn't be TOO bad. long story short, the blue crab rolls were absolutely delicious. Nice store, clean, very expensive though, that would be fine if the staff acted like they liked their jobs. Some of the stock is old, stale, dry (oven roasted turkey) . On the plus side, they have the best beef in town for supermarkets, but don't buy it unless they are running a sale. Needs improvement big time. read more

After shopping at Price Chopper for a few weeks when we first moved here I was pretty excited to find the Hen House. From the exterior it seems like the kind of store that would have lots of good produce and natural foods products. I was wrong. Hen House (at least this location) is an overpriced conventional grocery store with all the processed junk foods you could dream of and a tiny and super overpriced natural section with very little in the way of staple foods. The prepared foods section at the front is really extensive, but I'm not looking to buy pre-made soups at a grocery store, I'm looking for ingredients. Natural, unprocessed, corn-syrup free ingredients. The produce section is ok, but be prepared to pay a premium for anything organic. My biggest irritation with Hen House is the stupid member card. We signed up for one, but if you forget yours they won't scan one for you. Lame. And the checkers that I've dealt with are not very compassionate about folks who forget their card when dropping in to pick up one or two things. We also joined the "CSA" that they had in the summer, which isn't really a CSA (Community Supported Agriculture). Rather it is a slight discount on local produce, dairy, and lots of meats that they run in the harvest months. We were a part of a real CSA for many years and this doesn't come close to that experience. If you need something quick, it's a step up from Price Chopper, but I'd go with HyVee in this area, as their natural foods selection is far superior and their service and staff are better. read more

The Hen House at Blackbob Olathe KS has a horrible attitude towards customers; specifically, the store manager. He told me the reward card could only be used one time. According to the coupons we got, it says we can clearly buy any amount of flour, there was no certain limit of buying anything, but when we went to buy the flours, the manager came up to us and pointed out that we could only buy a maximum of two flours. He also said, "I'm the manager, I say it's two then it's two!" His attitude was just plain disrespectful towards a customer. We argued about the coupons, reward card, and why we couldn't buy all the flours, but eventually returned all the stuff we bought and he angrily threw back our money and told us, "Fine, give them back the money!" He told the cashier, and angrily pushed away the groceries we bought. This is one of the most disrespectful yet unexpected event for us. The manager who practically kicked us out was called Carl. I don't normally go to Hen House because the prices are significantly higher. I could justify this if the quality was significantly higher, but this includes prepackaged items. I do stop here when I want to grab something quick as they are never really busy. Also, the dolmaldes in the deli is a reason to get me in the store. The store is always really clean, the staff always friendly. They have a good fresh meat section. The overall deli has a nice selection of items. Their natural food department is pretty competitive. They cost less than other normal grocery stores in the area and about the same as the stores that sell organic. As for the rest of the store, I think their selection isn't that great. We've also experienced some problems with their meat department and the pharmacy, which is the only reason why they are not getting five stars.For example, I picked up some filet mignon to make for my mother's b-day. After getting it home and cooking it, I realized they gave me the wrong cut; it was more like roast. Lets start by saying I'm not a fan of Hen House as i have had this experience before. Stopped in for some fish sauce, they don't carry it at HyVee, thought i had enough and was at 888 yesterday, my mistake. Hen House had a poster in the entry for chili dinner for $6.99, seemed like an OK deal. Grabbed my fish sauce and all the chili dinner ingredients and surprise, the chili dinner that was supposed to cost $6.99 cost $9.99, three dollars more than advertised. So read the fine print, onions more than a pound, ground beef more than a pound both cost extra. So I talk with a manager and they tell me the ad only covers a pound and anything above is charged at retail. Seems to me thats deceptive, bring in the customer with a good deal that is NEVER going to sell for $6.99. My suggestions, package your ground beef in 1 lb packages and add a 1 lb package of diced onion and sell it for $6.99. I returned the whole deal and left with the just fish sauce and figure Hen House blew their last chance and I wont be back. read more

The food is decent but I'm so sick of the bad customer service I'm not going back. I've given this store several chances and it's just not a pleasant place to shop. I've encountered surly produce guys who were covering the produce with bags long before closing time and they were obviously annoyed I was there to buy anything. And I've encountered too many cashiers who are either engaged in their own personal conversation with the bagger that they never acknowledge my presence until the total comes up or the cashiers who are just blatantly rude. One time I did a big shopping two days in a row because I wanted to stock up for out of town guest I was expecting and the cashier actually made a comment that he couldn't believe I was going to eat all that. I've been to many different pharmacies in Kansas but this pharmacy is by far the best I've been to. Maegan and Lisa always make sure my experience is a great one. They are always timely when filling my prescriptions and always so courteous and helpful when I have questions or concerns. And they ALWAYS have smiles on their faces. I have liked Hen House for mostly produce and fresh meat. It can be over priced. I have enjoyed the salad bar. The guys in the meat department are always friendly.Its the rest of the bunch that needs big time work I bought 1 bunch of green onions. When I got to the register, she looked down and asked" Is this 1 or 2 bunches?. I said "1" ,she gave the onions to the guy bagging my groceries and had him study it. She then tried charging me for 2 until I opened my mouth about the price. Furthermore I bought crackers that were on sale. The price rang up .50 cents more than the sale price. I went to customer service and the guy was nice enough but went back to the crackers and said "Yeah, it looks like something is wrong." It did not specify "selected varieties". I got my money back. This really irritates me because the LAST FIVE times I have shopped at Hen House at least one item has been deceptive in pricing.
