If you can't find what you're looking for at Hy-Vee then you mine as well give up. This store is stocked chock full of merchandise and looks really great since the renovation. Highly recommend stopping here especially if you need something in a pinch (prepared foods, desserts, bakery items and more). Great meat and spirits departments, too. read more

Johnson Ave Hy-Vee was my first job when I was just 14 years old. I have moved a few times but every time I find myself close to Hy-Vee Store #1, I get the urge to stop and pick up a few things. What can I say - It feels like home in there! The store is always clean and usually well stocked but on occasion, the staff can leave something to be desired. It's happened on more than one occasion that I have needed help and no one could be found that could assist me. The customer service area is also almost always a cluster and I never have a clue about where I'm supposed to stand in the random line of people. Now, if you haven't been to the Market Grill at this location, you should definitely check it out! Good ol' Hy-Vee deli style food and some additional tasty dishes, served to you cafe style - comfy booth and all. I enjoy the prices and the quiet atmosphere as I eat my meat loaf with mashed potatoes. All in all, Hy-Vee Johnson Ave is a good store. Just don't expect that 15 year old to help you find your green beans. read more

This store is constantly out of stock of items, especially if it's in the ad or if they mail out coupons. I typically only shop here when I can also take advantage of ad/coupon items so I don't feel as bad paying more for other items. This visit today just made me too upset to continue shopping and I left my cart and walked out. I only needed a handful of items, 2 of which were on ad and the remainder at regular price. They were out of stock of both coupon items and 1 regular item. I don't understand if they know something is going on sale, why wouldn't they order more of that item especially since it's the weekend and they know they are going to be busy. I'll avoid coming to this HyVee again as they cannot order/stock their items appropriately. read more

Lunched today at Market Grill at HyVee. It was a shame the service was so poor and the environment was so unprofessional, the food was very good. While we waited and waited for our food we were treated to staff attempting to kill flies, a waitress and manager leaving piles of money spread out on a table, and later a waiter joking around about taking some of that cash. After about a half hour the waitress told us our food was up and she would go get it. 10 minutes earlier she brought it out. Her first words were "I forgot to tell them the wrap was no tomatoes, but I looked in it and don't see any." Of course, the tomatoes were in it. She said "Oops my bad". That waitress should have never have brought out food she knew was wrong. We comment that was an awful lot of wait staff, yet we waited a long time for the food and a longtime for them to collect our payment. read more

This store has become my go-to store. I appreciate that there are always employees about, in case I have a question. They have always been helpful and usually accurate. I also like their "Health Market" section where I can find a decent selection of vegetarian and vegan options. (There are also organic options here.) There are weekly deals which can be quite good. The selections at the bakery, deli, meat counter, and ready-to-eat-meal section are substantial. There are a pharmacy and café here as well, but I haven't used them. The only down side of note is that the produce freshness can be hit-and-miss. I have had to stop elsewhere to grab some fresh fruit or vegetables if I wanted something particular and couldn't accept Hy-Vee's options. read more

This review is for the meat & cheese island. The sub sandwiches here are surprisingly good as well as a great value. The "half" sub sandwich is actually on a whole 9" fresh hoagie roll for just $3.98. There are four or five breads and the entire deli case of meat & cheeses to choose from. They do it up with your choice of a boat-load of veggies and toppings and a number of spreads. With all these choices, if you don't get a good sandwich it's your own fault! read more

Hy-Vee is a dying breed of true full service grocery stores where the slogan "a helpful smile in every isle" is actually implemented. Ask an employee where something is and you will be walked to the item by that person, not a half -harted point followed by isle number or worse yet, the all to common "that's not my department "or "I don't know" responses that are uttered in mega sized one stop shop stores. They also offer a covered drive up where they will load your groceries for you as well as a drive trough pharmacy for in car pick up. Not to mention the Breakfast is outstanding for the price, and because it's cafeteria style, no tip is required saving you money. Close, convenient, friendly and knowledgeable what else can you ask for? read more
