We had the following: 生煎包 5 star 烤麸 5 star 酸辣汤 5 star, if you like spicy food this may not be the right thing for you. It's nice that there's another Shanghainese restaurant in Albany. The population of the city of Shanghai is close to 25 million, so it would make 53rd largest country in the world. The first thing that comes to mind when I think of Shanghai food scene would be the soup dumplings, followed by fried rice, and then noodle dishes. I was happy that all of the my favorites were on the menu. In Shanghai, I tend to get my dumplings in 南翔馒头店, so this is what I'm comparing this to. I thought the dumplings here were larger, made with thicker dough. While, at first, I was disappointed, I quickly found that it made them much easier to handle and eat. I actually like them here more. The fried rice was quite similar to what I ate in Shanghai, and we enjoyed the rest of the dishes as well. Ordered delivery - the delivery service via uber eats was fine. I explicitly asked for dietary reasons to NOT include any seeds or nuts in the dishes, however food arrived loaded with both so I could not eat anything, but the wife said the flavor was OK. Definitely not worth the money however, even if they would have not completely ignored our special instructions. The hot and sour soup was WAY too sesame oil forward. Decor - 5 stars. For a family restaurant that serves Chinese food, I'm especially impressed that this one is well decorated and looks clean and bright. All local Chinese restaurants should take note! Staff - 5 stars. We were greeted promptly even though we arrived at the height of lunch hour. The waiter was all smiles and was very polite. They were very attentive, refilling our hot tea, brought us lots of hot sauce, and brought us clean plates in the middle of the meal so we don't end up eating our yummy food in a pool of mixed sauces. Food - 4 stars. We ordered the following: Juicy buns 4 stars. The taste was excellent. Ample soup inside the buns. Too bad one of them bursted on arrival and its juices leaked out. That's a cardinal sin for juicy buns. So sad. Pan fried pork buns - 5 stars. Crispy bottoms. Watch out if you eat them piping hot, there may be some meat juices that can squirt out from within. Proceed with caution. And enjoy. Beef tendon with tripes - 4 stars. This cold appetizer hits all the spicy and numbing spots for thrill seekers. I'd give 5 stars if the portion is larger. Clam with black bean sauce - 3 stars. The black bean sauce is a bit too sweet for my taste. I think they do a better job with this dish over at the North East II. Brown rice - 3 stars. I thought I should give this rice an honorable mention as it is light and fluffy. Went well with the clams. Shanghai style stir fried lo mein noodles - 4 stars. This is my go to dish to gauge a shanghainese restaurant's authenticity. I think they did a good job with the dish. Taste was excellent. What could be better? Use the traditional thick yellow noodles would be nice (they used udon). Also, the dish would be more authentic if there's cabbage and yellow chives. I don't mean to be overly critical. Delicious place in Upstate New York! I stopped by this place with my boyfriend last week for lunch and we truly enjoyed the food here! I really appreciated the fact that they give you an entire tea pot for you to have as much as you please. Because we came here during lunch time we got the entire place to ourselves which was very nice since I felt really safe eating inside (big plus!) On the day we came, it had been pretty cold outside so my boyfriend was craving something warm to eat which made this place just right! The Food: We started off with the Spicy Wontons however my boyfriend asked whether they could make them a bit less spicy since I'm not the biggest fan of foods that are way too spicy, our waiter said sure. However when he brought us the dish, they had actually made the wontons with a peanut sauce which was truly so SO YUMMY! We didn't expect to get the peanut sauce at all but we really enjoyed the flavor of the wontons, the texture, and the sauce. Honestly that dish really was excellent! We also ordered 2 orders of pork soup dumplings however we were so hungry that I had forgotten to take pictures (SO SORRY!) I do have to say that compared to other places I've been to, this place has very flavorful soup dumplings. They were made perfectly since they didn't easily break as you picked it up, they were very big (huge plus), and they tasted really good too! The food is authentic, place is nice and clean and children friendly, we came on new year's day for lunch and there were a few other tables of families with children. I went in for lunch on a weekday because I was in Albany and yelpers I respect were giving this new Shanghai joint a big thumbs up. First, it is a lot nicer inside than out. It is clean, bright and somewhat airy with white tablecloths. Service is professional, efficient and pleasant. And the food: Wow! The best hot and sour soup I have ever eaten. The soup dumplings (listed as "steamed pork juicy bun") were great -- leagues better than my experience at Ala Shanghai in Latham. Lunch specials are absurdly cheap at $8, with an additional charge of $1 to add soup. They have brown rice for no extra charge. The appetizer listings are vast and enticing. I chose the soup dumplings and ordered Fish with brown sauce as my entré, hot and sour soup, and asked the waiter for a recommendation for another appetizer. He chose Shanghai Dough with brown sauce, which turned out to not be a happy choice for me. Kinda like eating soaked pumpernickel. It was an excellent dining experience that was absurdly inexpensive for the quality and cleanliness -- $23 plus tip for entre, soup and two appetizers. You betcha I'll return. I even told the waiter that on the way out 'cause I couldn't contain myself. It would be a great place to go with a group and frolic through the vast appetizer menu a la dim sum. In sum, an excellent addition to the best Chinese joints in Albany including my beloved Northeast Chinese and fine contender Fairy Schezuan, and dropping Ala Shanghai in favor of Hu. read more

Good food all around, our whole party agreed on this uncrowded Father's Day trip. We tried a mess of things so you don't have to. The only thing I wouldn't order again is the boneless duck with egg. The picture looked intriguing to me. But really it just tasted like leftover turkey with hard boiled egg yolk. After that we moved on to the good stuff. The steamed pork juicy bun was sufficiently soupy. One of mine burst and spilled. Whoops. Things got even better with the spicy wonton. It was just the right amount of heat for me, which might be too little for some people. It's not going to burn your face off, but the sauce is delicious and I liked swabbing it up the excess with the scallion pancakes. The pancakes were very good, but could've stood another minute to brown. Then came the mains. FIrst was the house style casserole, and wow, what a deal. Some of the soups they list serve "4-6 people." But the carafe they brought out was massive. It could easily fill 8-10 of the smallish bowls they give you. The house style casserole has ham, chicken, fried fish, mushrooms, bok choy and noodles in a delicious broth. I could've kept eating that, but there was more to come. We split a cumin lamb, which was super delicious, and then out came the piece de resistance, the crispy sea bass with home sauce. I don't think we realized it was going to be a whole fried fish, so it was a game to get the useable meat off, but they do make it easy by carving it a bit. This fish came swimming in a savory brown sauce with peas and carrots. This might've been my favorite, but it's hard to make that judgement in a meal of mostly big wins. read more

I love Hu's House. This is my go to for Asian food because everything is so authentic and delicious. I get the wonton soup and steamed pork dumplings every time. There is so much flavor in both of these dishes and they are great appetizers. For the main dish I get the chicken Lao Mian noodles as my entree which is delicious!! I did take out from Hu's House for the first time. They saved me the trouble of cooking tonight. I'm glad I went to them. The meal was great. In fact, the portions are a good size and now we have leftovers for tomorrow. I bought Mu Shu Pork, which I'd recommend. I liked the soup dumplings, too. I also got Kung Pao Chicken, which was very good. I, however, LOVE spicy food and could have handled many more chilis. Finding the restaurant was a bit of a challenge for me. since it's listed as Albany. Must be the mailing address, because it's physically in Colonie. I'm sorry I didn't take photos of my food, but I did take pictures of the restaurant, which has a very nice decor. Please check it out. It is authentic Shanghainese. Hu's House is legit. Everything is so fresh. I'm terribly picky about seafood. Everything they served me was delicious. Being my and my friends first time here we tried to order things we generally wouldn't. Apparently this means ALL THE SHRIMP. We started with soups: we both got a bowl of the hot and sour soup. It was very good. I'd say this was actually the only disappointment I had as I like my hot and sour soup to be decently spicy. I added a little of the ginger dipping sauce and that helped. Then, appetizers: the vegetarian bao. The shrimp steamed dumplings. (These were so good we ordered seconds) an order of scallion pancakes. (Which were fresh and light. Not very oily. I've HAD frozen scallion pancakes before. These are NOT it.) I would come here for these appetizers ALONE. All of them were so good. We then each had an entree. (What. We are big guys.) he ordered the prawn. I've never had prawn before. I'd probably not get it again. But it was fresh and good. The sauce was decently spicy. Maybe a bit less than I wanted, but the flavors mixed really well. I got the sesame shrimp. (I asked the waiter which sauce he would choose as the menu lists it as coming with the sesame sauce or a Gen Tso's sauce. He emphatically recommended the sesame sauce.) it was perfection. Our beverages were the provided hot tea, and tap water. The water had the typical colonie flavor, but they added a lime slice to each glass. Service was attentive, but not hovering. The place was BUSY but they ran the house very efficiently. I got there a little after 5:30 on a Saturday. There were two parties seated, and they asked if I had a reservation. (I did not, but they accommodated us anyway.) By the time we left the restaurant was packed. Yeah. I will be back. Dinner with all the appetizers was about $70. Worth it. read more

We went with ordering just small plates that I must say were decidedly unattractive and hard to eat without making a big mess, much like eating at my house, but they were mostly very tasty. The hot and sour needed a bit more sour (no waiter in sight) but savory and exotic, the beef short ribs were bony but tender and salty in a good way (just like me as well)... QUESTION: do you spit the bones out, take them out of your mouth with your fingers or with your chopsticks???, the pork (soup) dumplings were drippy and flavorful and not recommended for a first (and possibly last) date, the scallion pancake was tender in the middle, crispy on the outside (just like me) but needed scallions, and the cold sliced beef was just weird (chewy/tasted like 5 spice powder - QUESTION: where's a growing puppy when you need one?). OK I was NOT in a hurry, but neither were the staff. Very laid back and I try, really, I try to be patient. However, Zena and Patient are two words that are not often found in the same sentence. That Hu's house is so hot right now! No question, I was genuinely​ surprised and impressed by the authenticity of the dishes and the overall experience. The soup dumplings were juicy and packed with flavor​. I would also recommend both the scallion pancake and the spicy wonton​. The scallion pancakes were thin but the texture was perfect, crispy outside and doughy inside. I thought the spicy wonton was not spicy at all, in fact, it was refreshing, especially with the cold slices of cucumber on top. The wontons​ were in an aromatic sauce that's​ red and oily, but trust me, don't​ be intimidated. The bok choy with tofu skin was a great veggie dish. The tofu skin is soft and tender, while the bok choy was cooked perfectly, with just enough crunchiness without compromising on the greenness of the color. The best part may be the inviting atmosphere​ and the clean decor. With the calm traditional Asian​ music in the background, I felt relaxed and comfortable. The waiters were probably the most polite and professional waiters I met in a Chinese restaurant in a long time! Did not feel rushed at all. The menu was designed well with photos of some dishes. As winter continues to rear its ugly head, all I want is mouth-burning, tear-inducing spice to heat up my soul. Hu's House delivered on that front with rich dishes that don't hit you immediately, but rather set up a slow build that will leave you and your company sweating in no time. The Beef Tendon with Tripe ($10) was a cold appetizer dressed with hot chili oil and crushed peanuts. The deli thin slices avoid that tough, overly chewy texture and even converted a former hater into a tripe lover. Definitely a staple for every future visit. I'll admit it. The Dried Spicy Fried Chicken ($16) was intimidating. These deep-fried nuggets of mostly dark meat come out absolutely covered in dried Sichuan chili peppers. As we dug through the avalanche of lightly scorched peppers and garlic, I was pleasantly surprised to find the chefs had opted not to use tiny bone-in pieces as is common in other preparations of this dish. Despite our initial suspicions, the chicken was mildly spicy. The sleeper agent in our choices was the Lamb with Spicy Soup ($18). Its appearance was nowhere close to the deep red of the photo and it was dismissed as mild. How wrong we were. Mix up this deep dish to find thinly sliced lamb, tender cabbage, crunchy bean sprouts, mouth-tingling peppercorns, and more smoky chili peppers in a flavorful broth. The leftover stew was even hotter as lunch the next day. Our only non-spicy dish: Steamed Pork Juicy Buns ($6). The filling and broth in the soup dumplings were tasty, but I do agree that Hu's House should offer deeper soup spoons even if it does not match their aesthetic (modern stainless steel utensils). Overall, if you're looking for genuine food, eat here. With a large group. Try something unusual. The service is attentive and friendly. It's relatively inexpensive for the high quality. Ordered through UberEats. Sorry to the owners for my bad review. Clams with black bean sauce were sandy/gritty and inedible. I tried 6 clams and gave up. I asked for the sauce on the side for my son's sweet and sour chicken. Nope. Fully dressed and had a buffalo wing taste to them. Scallion pancakes were crispy like crackers so I didn't eat those. And no dipping sauce? The sweet and sour soup was missing altogether (UberEats refunded) so I can't tell you how that tasted. And there was no rice! I've never ordered Chinese food that didn't come with rice. Luckily I'm Asian and always have rice on hand! My husband and I were going from Ithaca to middle of nowhere Vermont, so we decided to stop in Albany as a half way point. We looked this place up ahead of time and it didnt disappoint. Someone recommended the steamed green beans and they were cooked wondefully. A little salty but perfect with brown rice. We also got an assortment of buns and dumplings and all were delightful. A fun, first visit to Hu's House on Chinese Lunar New Year Feb. 8, 2019. This is a very traditional Shanghai style restaurant. Full of families. A mix of Americans & Americans of Chinese descent. Some familiar w/ this style of cuisine ordered family style for their tables. Round table tops come in various sizes to accommodate the number of guests in different size parties - genius. There are also booths around the perimeter. Note: this was previously Bangkok Bistro - an funky bar & restaurant. The new Hu's House has eliminated the bar and gives it's full attention to traditional Shanghaiese food. Full house on this Friday evening around 6:00pm. Very good waitstaff but no no name tags. A round of hot tea and some beers to start. We had a party of five, more people the more dishes you can sample & share. Also as this is the Year of the Pig we went heavy on pork dishes.These are some of the very good dishes we enjoyed: sweet & sour pork ribs (app) - slippery little chopped pieces of ribs, not the larger ribs you may have had other places, scallion pancake (4) app w/ soy/ginger sauce, Gen. Tso chicken w/ chili peppers, garlic beef w/ peppers, double cooked pork w/ vegetables, and pork meatballs (4). All prepared well and served hot. Plenty to take home for another meal for each of us. Apps, soups, and dumplings, & juicy soup buns are $8-12. Entrees are $12-36. The more expensive entrees are those you won't find at most Chinese restaurants e.g. sea cucumber, crabs, pig intestine, and many whole fish dishes. Hu's rocks. It's one of the few places where you're able to get authentic soup dumplings and dim sum in this entire region of NYS. The servers are very kind and sweet, especially to me as I have a sometimes hangry toddler, they make the toddler laugh and deflect so that he calms down. Good guys all around! I love the family style seating with the lazy Susan circular table in the middle for sharing. It reminds me of the family I've always wanted but don't have close by, rolling 8 to 10 deep with a squad to fill our bellies with amazing food. I would love to come here with a UYE if those even exist in this area, with folks that know this cuisine well so that I can try more of the menu items. The soup is perfect, dim sum on point, the rice dishes are standard fare and the folks are nice. I drive well over an hour to come here if I'm remotely in the area (which is used in broad terms) and it's a must stop if I fly into ALB before the long drive home. Great find. read more

We ordered the crispy pork pastry, pan fried pork buns, the vegetarian dumplings, scallion pancakes, crab pork juicy buns and an order of chicken and broccoli. First we were served tea, which was tasty. Next came the crispy pork pastries. They were pretty much tasteless. Next came the scallion pancakes, which were delicious. After those, we were served the veggie dumplings, which like the pork pastry was completely tasteless. We were then served the pan fried pork buns. Both my sister and I took a big bite of our selected pork buns. We could tell right away that something was wrong. I grabbed another bun and cut it open. The meat was completely RAW. not undercooked, RAW!! We then waited over 10 minutes for our server to come back. I showed him the raw pork buns. He simply took them from the table. He did not say anything! not even sorry. I then told him I would like the check. He said "not yet, your chicken and broccoli is coming". I said okay, because I did not want to be rude. Although, both my sister and I were turned off by the food by then. the chicken came. We did not eat it or the juicy buns. The server gave us the check. We were billed for everything except for the buns, which I suppose was fair. We will not be back. I truly believe no one should try this establishment. Vegan review. Oh Hu's House, I will be forever faithful. Sometimes it's really hard to get a good vegan/vegetarian meat substitute OR tofu dish at Chinese restaurants. Minced meat on everything, tofu tastes like kibble, base sauces aren't that good to begin with, etc. NOT HERE, FAM!! This is homemade vegan "sausage" and "chicken" using rolled, simmered, seasoned, and dressed tofu skins, so the mouth feel is pleasant, chewy, and really tasty in its own right. The not-sausage dish is full of juicy hot and sweet peppers in a Sichuan sauce. The General's Veg Chicken is crisp, tender, understated, delicious. The dough of the scallion pancakes is worked just enough to be dough, but not tough or overly crunchy. Vegan duck is a bit under seasoned, but the spices are delicate and the shiitake mushrooms inside are fresh and firm (hit it with some Chili Oil, bb). Ordered the spicy wonton, sweet and sour ribs which came out quick and cold. Clearly reheated. Same thing with the shrimp... microwaved more than once and so chewy. There's one guy running the whole front restaurant which is pretty filthy; garbage behind the counter and dirty rusted sinks. Only thing edible was the spicy fried chicken and rice bc I guess you can't simply reheat dishes like that. Those tasted pretty fresh. Usually I don't mind bad service if the food is good ... however this place is a health hazard and I'm just praying we don't get sick. We didn't say anything until after we paid bc I wasn't going to ask for things to be removed from the bill, clearly the restaurant is already struggling but the waiter/ owner/ manager showed no remorse whatsoever.
