Fajita Rice Bowl and Grilled Steak & Avocado Taco
Bianca F.

While visiting Long Island NY, my buddy wanted to go to a place that served fried pickles , that's what brought us to Hurricane grill ! The fried pickles were good and were paired with a zesty / tangy sauce. Unfortunately I didn't get a picture of those. But I did order the chicken fajita bowl. It's simple and brings everything a fajita would have. A few suggestions ; the rice was a bit bland , some salt or seasoning would make it just right ! Luckily there was yummy gooey cheese over it. The salsa that came with it was very "tomatoey" it needed some spice and a kick. The bowl was missing something , it would be great paired with chips, luckily my fiancés plate came with some so I was able to pick off from some of hers. Overall our visit was good. Also, thanks to our server who was nice and helpful !

Menu options were adequate, though nothing felt particularly distinctive. The wings were basic, mediocre.

The best part about this place was the DJ! I think he's there on Fridays. If so, I highly recommend coming on a Friday night. Not sure what happens on other nights. While all of the servers were very friendly, the actual service was scattered. We had multiple different people tending to us and it was a bit all over the place. The food was meehhh. Not terrible but not great. We came at around 11. So maybe I'll come earlier and on a different to see what the experience is like.

The owner was our server and she was very sweet and welcoming. She gave us a rundown of the menu and everything she described sounded amazing, however the food did not live up to the hype - the portions were small, and the flavor was lacking. We ordered a round of drinks - which also fell flat. Not 1 person ordered 2nd drink - after my appetizer (jerk chicken wontons) I wasn't interested in anything else. Someone ordered a skirt steak entree which was so small - the prices def don't match portion sizes - hate this is a neighborhood spot that I'll probably never go to again

The food is actually great, which wasn't what I was expecting from a bar. We had the chicken fingers and fries, for my 17 month old, cheeseburger dip, and pretzel sticks and they were great. The service was great as well. The server was the sweetest. I forgot husband though unfortunately. It's very clean there which is nice to see. There was a band playing, which I think their name was called the category. They were good. Very laidback and the decor is relaxing. Mostly an older crowd and the place was packed. We got a seat next to friends quickly. We weren't that hungry so we just ordered mozzarella sticks and the grilled pesto chicken sandwich, which me and my husband split. We upgraded to beer battered onions rings. Everything was delicious and the sandwich was huge! I initially thought the prices were a bit high but given the portion sizes, it was well worth it. I also got a free beer for signing up for the rewards club, which was a nice bonus. In all, im sure we will be back.

The location might seem small, but it's jammed packed with traditional flavors that are being executed to perfection. Can't believe I waited this long living in the neighborhood (2+yrs) to finally stroll in and experience what some might say is 'Pura Vida' or !Magnífico¡ Upon first visit, I had to try one of their margaritas and at least one 'Street food' menu item, so opted for their Pear Margarita and Birria Empanadas. Let's say Bravo, Brava and Encore to explore more of their menu. The cocktail was totally on point without being overpowering in any way, very balanced and brightly refreshing. The empanadas were deliciously crispy without being greasy, stuffed and sealed perfectly. Then opted to try their Mashed Potatoes Fries and requested a side of their advertised Shishito slaw seen topping another menu item. I loved the way they created and presented both. The fries were a perfect balance of soft but crisped with the creme drizzle and pickled onions. :* The Shishito slaw was a summery, crunch lightly dressed which has me wanting and requesting more the next visit. They should definitely add that as one of their regular listed sides. My husband had a burger with regular slaw and an old fashioned styled cocktail which he mentioned to be exceptional as well. Can't wait to dive deeper into their menu and would highly recommend to others.

I also had a classic margarita which was fantastic. Service was just as impressive as the food...waters were never empty and the staff were incredibly friendly and attentive. I saw this deli online and asked in the comments if they had a thanksgiving sandwich. They responded "yes, the big gobbler" so off I was to check it out. The space: this deli is super clean and well organized. They also have a fresh salad bar where you can get custom salads. They also have ready made salads prepared for convenience. The guys behind the counter were super nice. They also offered me to sample one of their hot soups while I waited. I tried their sweet potato curry which was really nice. Now let's get to the gobbler. I tried it exactly how they make it without any alterations because I wanted to see what their combo was about. I will be back but I'm making a couple changes. I tried the sandwich hot (which is how they serve it) and cold. Hot it was okay, but I really like it cold. Cold I feel like I can taste the combo of all the flavors better. So I definitely will come back the next time I'm in the mood for a sandwich. The Deli also shares space with an ice cream shop, so you can always grab some dessert on your way out. There is street parking in the area. You have to pay a meter, but it's only 25¢ for a whole hour.

Potatoes au gratin & Brussels. They were delicious. My one piece of advice; If you want to be an upscale American/steakhouse with art deco kind of vibes, jazz nights, etc., they NEED to learn how to make proper cocktails. I ordered a Manhattan. Don't assume bourbon. A traditional Manhattan is made with Rye. It's supposed to be spirit forward with the beautiful sweet vermouth to balance with 2 dashes ango. Express Orange and dress the peel, or not, doesn't matter. Most bartenders drown cocktails, this one included. And NEVER serve in a martini glass :) Nitpicky but only bc I loved everything else. They just need to learn how to make proper cocktails. The details matter! I'll be back for that Snake River Steak!!

Hospitality: -- the friendly, generous reception and entertainment of guests, visitors, or…read morestrangers, creating a welcoming, comfortable, and safe environment, making others feel valued and at home. This brings us to The James, managed by Joe Giannino under the fat-cat "Standard Hospitality Group," owned by Andrew Affa & Steve Squirtiro. It's hard owning a business and keeping it profitable but not when it's an almost algorithmic formula driven money extraction system so commonly found today. It's more difficult dining out in the world today when it feels like hospitality is vacating. Vining more about high-revenue than humanity. By very definition, I wouldn't call a good portion of the hospitality industry hospitality at all, and I certainly wouldn't say the James offers any. What I love about food is what it does for the soul, & what I've always loved about providing and caring for people is the sense of community; connection during good times and difficult ones alike; That's hospitality to me. Breaking bread is one of the most fundamental human gestures of generosity and true wealth. When you have it, you share it not squander it, not hoard it or treat it like it's something to take from others and line your pockets with. That's why this experience disappointed me so much, because I believe with the myriad of options, we must be far more selective and far more supportive of local and smaller family run establishments. Today, for a table they would still fill and never notice, I tried to cancel a reservation out of respect -- respect for the staff, for other guests, and for my damn self. Being charged a cancellation fee when a mom is sick on Mothers Day, is not hospitality, it is not empathy. It is greed disguised as brand experience self worth. I have supported the Arlo from this same restaurant group in the past and probably would have happily returned too, based on the menu alone, but coldhearted, rigid policies like this change how a place feels. There are many family-run restaurants that understand flexibility and empathy. That kind of environment matters to me, and this experience will forever make me decide to support those places instead. I've recently learned to name positive outcomes when something negative arises, so I believe this time, it's great that it only cost me fifty bucks to never give this group another dime. Typical corporate hospitality is more what the James can offer. These types of COMPANIES feed themselves, not the community.

The Brixton is a beautiful restaurant with very relaxed and casual vibes. The word around town is that their drinks are awesome. What about their food, though? They originally would not seat us in the middle of the afternoon because most of the empty tables were reserved. We had to request to sit outside, which was empty, before they decided to serve us. Odd that they did not even offer that to us. The General Tso' Cauliflower was the only great thing served to us. It is incredibly crispy and flavorful. You almost forgot that you were eating a piece of vegetable at times. The Short Rib Brisket Sesame burger was shocking. $18 for two White Castles-sized sliders. It was easily consumed, and I was left much to be desired. This is most definitely an appetizer item, not an entree. The Chicken Waffle was good. Nicely deep-fried and packs a lot of flavor. The waffle looked dubious. If I had to guess, it might not be mad fresh to order. Essentially, it's 3 drumsticks/wings over a possibly frozen Eggo waffle. I would recommend a second dish if you are looking to get full. The Steak frites and Eggs Benedict were the final dishes served. It is hard to mess these dishes up, but the ribeye was nicely seasoned and cut up. The dishes were nicely displayed. Overall, this is just an OK experience. When the deep-fried cauliflower appetizer is the most memorable dish here, it is quite alarming. Portion sizes are on the small end, and none of the flavors for the entrees really stuck out. Perhaps I will come here strictly for the drinks next time.
