The reason for the four stars instead of five is that I was asked several times (by the staff and doctor) if I wanted glasses as well as contacts. I get an annual exam mainly due to needing more contact lens. I wear only one (mono vision) and have had the same RX for several years. It felt like they were just trying to sell me glasses, when I was very clear I didn't want them. I also don't know why I'm charged for a "contact fitting exam" (~$130 + my "regular eye exam") when I wear the same contact year after year. Luckily, I have VSP and it covers this, but it seems unnecessary to do this unless I'm having problems with my contacts. They did give me samples of my contact lenses since I was leaving on vacation and was running out.

I was treated courteously and professionally by the front desk staff, who ran me through a battery of tests. My optometrist was Dr Sandra Chou. Wow. Smart as a whip. Brimming over with energy. She took the time to thoroughly explain the thinking behind her recommendations. As long as I live in Santa Barbara, Sandra Chou will be my go-to for eye work. I have two complaints about the office. They had nothing to do with the personnel. (1) The questionnaire they distribute is incredibly intrusive, asking numerous questions that have nothing to do with eye care. I care a lot about personal privacy, and if the questionnaire had been on the web, I would have gone elsewhere. (2) There is not much space total, and the "waiting room" basically consists of just loitering outside the front door. But they didn't keep me waiting long, and the exam was worth it. Dr. Chou is a huge asset.

I have worn contact lens for 27 years and have seen a variety of eye doctors across the country. I…read morehad a good learning experiencing seeing this eye doctor when my coverage changed to VSP and my previous eye doctor retired after seeing him for many years. I switched to this office in 2024, but wish in hindsight that I had taken the time to compare different costs for contact lenses at different eye doctors in town who accepted VSP. This office had an immediate opening, so I jumped on it, which I now regret. I take full responsibility for not doing a cost comparison or simply having the eye appointment and taking my prescription somewhere else. My first interesting experience in this office was it felt like Dr. Tem Gronquist was marketing the daily contact lenses, and I felt like he was inpatient with me with almost anything I said. Perhaps he had something on his mind that day though. When I asked the price difference between monthly lenses and daily lenses, he simply stated it would be the difference in having to buy Clear Care a few times a year for the monthly lenses which I had worn for many, many years. To me, that sounded great. I was willing to pay a little extra if it would be equal to the costs of the Clear Care ($18 maybe 4-5 times a year off Amazon, so that's about $100 a year or so). I agreed and the office ordered them. Interestingly, the eye doctor did not offer me the option of buying a 6-month supply, but was insistent that I would buy a year supply and that was what his office offered. I obliged, and I now wish I had asked more questions. I now realize I could have bought a 6 month supply, but I had would not have been eligible for receiving compensation if I mailed the receipt back to the contact lens company. When the contacts arrived, I was quoted a price at the front desk of over $600.00. I have never in my life paid that much before for contact lenses. I then said I had no idea it would be so expensive - I thought it would be the difference of having to buy Clear Care. I then asked for the lenses to instead be monthly lenses. The eye doctor begrudgingly agreed to switch to monthly lenses in a follow-up appointment (I do realize this was possibly a loss for him). Those monthly contacts came to something over $300 - I'd have to look back at the receipts from 2024. I remember at the time thinking that while the front office staff were kind, receptive, and friendly, the eye doctor himself seemed more focused on marketing products. They were the most expensive monthly contacts I'd ever purchased. I now wish I had asked for the cost comparison to be printed out for me at the original contact lens eye appointment or had simply had the eye exam at that office and taken the prescription elsewhere. Lesson learned. Fast forward to 2025. I decided I definitely wanted to see a different eye doctor who accepted VPN and who would be more receptive and considerate of costs for customers. I saw a wonderful eye doctor just down the street who was more patient, thorough, and interestingly did not agree with the previous year's prescription I had been given. She explained that daily lenses are more costly than monthly and showed me an accurate cost comparison. I chose to go with monthly lenses. With my VPN insurance, the total cost for me was $40. (VPN covers $270 for contact lenses so the total cost was $310 without VPN coverage). I began to wonder why the past year's contacts that I purchased through Dr. Tem Gronquist were so much more expensive - the exact same brand of toric lens - so I called VPN to inquire if by chance Dr. Gronquist's office had not billed VPN. In speaking with a VPN representative, it was explained to me that eye doctors have the choice of marking up their contact lenses they sell to whatever they choose. VPN gave me the cost comparison between Dr. Gronquist in 2024 and my new eye doctor in 2025, and it was evident that Dr. Gronquist's office SIGNIFICANTLY marks up the cost for contact lenses. Gulp! Thus, I write this review for anyone in 2025 who is on a budget. Make sure you do cost comparisons before buying contacts - don't make the same mistake as me. Dr. Gronquist's front desk staff again were incredibly kind, but I was not impressed with Dr. Gronquist's bedside manner, the lack of clarity in cost differences between daily and monthly lenses, and frankly his pushy marketing pitch for daily lenses. Clearly, he was focused on his best interests. I'm grateful to have switched eye doctors and learned a valuable lesson.
