I was treated courteously and professionally by the front desk staff, who ran me through a battery of tests. My optometrist was Dr Sandra Chou. Wow. Smart as a whip. Brimming over with energy. Charming. She answered all my questions graciously and intelligently. I'm interested in science and health, and she took all my inquiries seriously answered them comprehensively. She took the time to thoroughly explain the thinking behind her recommendations. As long as I live in Santa Barbara, Sandra Chou will be my go-to for eye work. I have two complaints about the office. They had nothing to do with the personnel. (1) The questionnaire they distribute is incredibly intrusive, asking numerous questions that have nothing to do with eye care. I care a lot about personal privacy, and if the questionnaire had been on the web, I would have gone elsewhere. (2) There is not much space total, and the "waiting room" basically consists of just loitering outside the front door. But they didn't keep me waiting long, and the exam was worth it. Dr. Chou is a huge asset.

The reason for the four stars instead of five is that I was asked several times (by the staff and doctor) if I wanted glasses as well as contacts. I get an annual exam mainly due to needing more contact lens. I wear only one (mono vision) and have had the same RX for several years. It felt like they were just trying to sell me glasses, when I was very clear I didn't want them. I also don't know why I'm charged for a "contact fitting exam" (~$130 + my "regular eye exam") when I wear the same contact year after year. Luckily, I have VSP and it covers this, but it seems unnecessary to do this unless I'm having problems with my contacts. They did give me samples of my contact lenses since I was leaving on vacation and was running out.

The main reason I went for the eye exam is because my vision had been getting more and more blurry, particularly noticeable while driving pre-dawn and after sunset. It's not fun hearing you need glasses (first timer, here) and just thinking about going anywhere to drop off my prescription and having to pick out frames had me unnerved. My housemate suggested Goleta Valley Optical, and then said, "They have a place right across from Trader Joe's on De La Vina." Super convenient location for me, so that was the first major plus. Easily found parking on the street (didn't know they have parking in back) and when I walked into the business, I was pleasantly surprised at how beautifully lit, clean and open the place was. Lucky me (another big plus), I was waited on by one of the owners. A family business, and local, as it turns out. Another nice thing to discover. "Jacob" was tremendously patient with me, answering all of my questions. We had a most engaging back and forth, talking about our hometown of Santa Barbara. What a lovely person he is. No wonder business is thriving. (They also have a location at Turnpike and Hollister, I found out.) Jacob helped me find just the right frames, too. Everything he said and did made me feel much less stressed about my eyes and having to get glasses. I came here to write this review because I think more people should know about GV Optical and how well one is treated. It seems a rare thing, of late, to find such terrific and friendly service. He performed my…read morecataract surgery with the laser system and i have had no issues at all. in fact, my experience with Dr. Carter couldn't have been any better, he was very attentive to all my concerns and explained the procedure in detail on what I would be expecting. The whole surgery took about 20 minutes and my post op consultation went great. The staff at Paveloff Vision Center are very courteous, and helpful. I would recommend Dr. Carter for any eye care that you may need.
