They've expanded their operation and offerings, but the food remains top notch, and I would still proclaim this the best destination near NYC for "ghar ka khana." On a recent weekend, options included a stellar bhindi kadhi, aloo bhajias, lots of other great subzis, and a so-called "Afghan paneer." The butter chapattis that come out every few minutes are still incredible. But we went after 9.30 pm and that time they were just serving dinner. Then too they did make vada pav for us. Dinner was nice , we had chicken and dal . I was somewhat coerced by the kind owner to come in as I was looking thru their menu posted outside... I went ahead and entered and was seated. I had a small group of friends and we ordered a few different items.. chicken kadai, butter chicken ans tandoori chicken. The only saving grace in the entire order was their naans (which are super over priced for the area its in). Service wise the owner or manager was very kind. But they brought out one dish without bread and rice as we waited 25 more minutes for the other dishes.... this while we were one of only 2 other customers. My friend became so upset that they almost walked out. Other than that... their sauces in which the kadai was made was decent but the meat in all 3 dishes was super rubbery rough. Which means either it wasnt cooked long enough or over cooked or the meat was old. I will settle for the latter. Meat had no tenderness whatsoever. Spices uses seemed bery generic. Their food in the front counter ie the breas pakoras and such seemed better tasting. All in all... sadly and I hate to do this to any business but they need to fix their food quality and service speed otherwise its not a place I would recommend at all. read more

Best Paani Puri ever! That have 5 different types of paani with mix of spicy and sour and sweet. We even got the plain papdi which is rare in US. In entree we had garlic naan and spicy Malai kofta which was all very good. We were so busy gorging down on the delicious food that we never took any pictures of food to post. We went there at 11:45 PM. We were really HUNGRY so ordered directly entree. The food was amazing and so as the place, can accommodate approx 125 people. On Newark Avenue, to find such a big place is surprising and ample amount of space to walk. It's normal operating hours are from 11:30 AM to 11:30 PM but we came for the first time and it has recently opened, can't disappoint the customers and there was a table where people were eating so they welcomed us happily. Having ordered from almost every Newark ave restaurant we decided to try Hungry. We ordered takeout from hungry after reading all the good reviews on Yelp. Thought I'd share our experience here as well. We ordered Paneer Jalfrezi and Vegetable Manchurian dry. The person who took our order was patient with us while we were trying to figure out what we needed. So I'd say they are service oriented. Now, the food we ordered was very good. We didn't expect it to be this good. They get what medium spicy is. It wasn't too spicy nor bland, just perfect medium! The Paneer was saucy and I bet would taste great with a garlic naan! The veg manchurian which we were greatly worried about turned out to be a pleasant surprise! It didn't taste too salty or spicy. The sauce was perfect and so was the heat level. It had enough bell peppers and onions in it to make the Manchurian a merry medley. We will definitely visit again and try their other dishes and recommend this place to our friends and family! When we reached the restaurant they took 15 mins to find the status of the order and to realize that this isn't ready. There are multiple instances of delayed and poor service. I did not enjoy the food at Hungry. On a Saturday, early afternoon, I was in the mood for dal makhani. I mean, this isn't like a super sophisticated Indian dish, right? My thinking is that this is a typical, basic offering that any Indian restaurant should nail. Well, Hungry's was so not good. It seemed like the spice combo was off. It also didn't taste fresh. Extremely bad experience. We walked in here to have a lunch buffet on a Sunday. The spread had a lot of vareity however we were disgusted to see dirty serving plates, spoons and Utensils. Half of the food was over and not replenished. Asked for fresh rolled roti, they offered tandoori roti saying the aunty who makes roti is not there. Asked for pani puri, did not get pani puri. I live on Indian food; I live for Indian food. I've tried most of the buffets in Little India, & this was easily the worst. Everything actually tasted good, an interesting blend of identifiable spices (at first) but nothing was hot - it was hardly even warm. People were standing at the buffet line for minutes at a time, waiting for food to be added, and it was, but by single portion sizes. I was only given one piece of chapati for the hour and a half I sat there, with all of the staff walking a wide berth around me, seemingly afraid I would ask them for something to eat. I kept hoping to see some bread or curries brought out, but what they eventually gave us was tepid brown water with a handful of chickpeas. - That too, was only lukewarm, despite coming straight from the kitchen. They seem to keep the supply in the buffet dishes at a level sufficient for 3 or 4 people at a time. They had about 6 people come in after me, so there was nothing but biriyani, plain white rice, soup, and oiled potatoes for most of the time I was there which isn't something I want to pay $13 or whatever it was for, not with: cheaper, better, warmer, and tangible food, of a wider variety across the street (and next door, and 2 storefronts down...) It's also worth noting that a few of the other customers at "Hungry" gawped and stared at me periodically, as though I was some sort of stray animal that wandered onto the premises. That's unlikely to be the proprietier's fault but with very little food to be shared among not a lot of people, and with the staff avoiding basically everyone, I guess you have to point your resentment somewhere. Found this restaurant on Grubhub, which is an ordeal itself. Grubhub aside, Hungry offers many standard Indian dishes- vegetarian, pescatarian, and regular-old meat (chicken and goat options.) I ordered an entree butter chicken/tikka masala, garlic naan, and kheer (rice pudding.) The curry was delivered hot and delicious with the typical jasmine rice on the side. It was mildly spicy and fruity, but I was disappointed b/c there were only 4-5 1-inch cubes of chicken swimming in a vast puddle of sauce. The 2 half-slices of garlic naan were barely lukewarm even though they were served in a foil-lined bag; the side of pudina (mint chutney) was instead a slice of lime and some raw chopped onions. I did request no raisins in the rice pudding, and there were no raisins, so that's a plus. But the Grubhub app pushed back the delivery time twice. Considering that one may buy an entire rotisserie chicken at any supermarket for $7, I'd expected a full dish of chicken, not just a few hunks thrown in with bell pepper and onion. Flavor was good, but delivery was slow and I didn't get the bang for my buck. read more

This is amazing authentic Indian restaurant with 5 flavors of paani puri. The most delicious paani puri stall they have at the restaurant. I missed the lunch buffet but their Indo chinese food was out of this world. The owner said they DON'T use ajinomoto in their indo chinese food. Hence, it's good for your health. Food was really good we tried pani puri which was spicy for my taste but I was offered cold water immediately when the person serving pani puri saw my plight. Brownie points for that! We also ordered ragda patty and pav Bhaji and one who has eaten here in New Jersey how difficult it is to find authentic tic tasting chat or bhaji but the highlight was the soft fluffy Bombay like pav. Couldn't get enough of that pav it was too good to be true! One misleading point was tht they had a board for grand buffet with menu on display but when we went to check out buffet there weren't enough items on the menu. I wouldn't call that grand.
