I ordered the Cajun Turkey Sub with peeper jack and cheddar cheese, with all toppings with extra pickles and vinaigrette dressing! And, I had the Miss Vickie's Sea Salt & Vinegar Chips with a Dr. Pepper!!! My lunch was beyond lip-smacking good! The shop has hippopotamus decor that is unique and puts a smile on your face when you enter the shop. I went in today and ordered a whole number one with just the basics-tomato, lettuce and onions. When they rang me up, they charged me for 2 half number ones. A whole number one cost $11.25 the 2 half number ones come up to $14.50. They stole $3.25 by not ringing it up correctly. They know there's a price difference they chose to steal for me. I will not be back and I would recommend no one else go unless you're ready to be stolen from. read more

There's a reason this place has been open for almost 50 years. Wandered in on the fly from out of town and was blown away by the sandwiches. Unbelievable amount of meat on each sandwich at a very reasonable price. My husband's a big guy, ordered a footlong hippo special but barely finished half. Never disappointed. A staple in this community for Yeats. I work outside of town now so I am rarely I town during the week to grab a sub but if I ever am, it's guaranteed to he Hungry Hippo. Not much has changed mt entire life with the setup, fixtures, signage, or menu. Its like a little piece of nostalgia everytime you walk theu the door with the jingle bell on the handle in historic downtown Gainesville. I always get a Cajun turkey and cheese or the tuna on wheat with all the veggies(minus tomatoes.ew) the bread is so good and soft and ingredients prepared ans prepped daily. I initially came to this sandwich shop because I had not yet found a restaurant/fast food place that serves pastrami sandwiches in Gainesville. Upon walking in, I was greeted warmly by a young woman and a middle-aged woman. They have several sandwich combinations to choose from, but you can also make your own sandwich if you wish. The sheer size of the bread they pulled out from under the counter caught me off guard... in a good way. I don't know if they buy their bread locally, but it was delicious. Good portion sizes, great quality ingredients, and decent prices. The shop is very humble on the inside, as far as decor is concerned. I would definitely recommend this shop to friends and family members over a local Subway. There is no comparison between the two. read more

But it's the small thing that counts and you can't get cheap or careless with the bread. Nice little place and I feel that if they upgrade the bread, it would be a 4 or even 5 star shop. The meat to bread was light and could be a bit more meat on each but the flavor was really good. We were passing through town and found this place on Yelp and HAD to stop by. Unfortunately we were there 15 mins before they closed and it seemed everything was cleaned and put up. We sheepishly asked the nice lady if they were still open and she said yes. She was super nice and obliging, not once ever making us feel bad for coming in so late. When you enter you immediately know why they have "hippo" in their name. Adorable hippos decorate the entirety of this lovely establishment. I was told that most of the hippos items were donated. Now for the food. . . don't let the cute hippos & retro furnishings fool you, the Hungry Hippo Sub shop makes a very tasty sub sandwich! Bread: The bread was soft & fluffy, but not so much that it collapses under the sub's fillings. Comes in wheat or white, half or whole. For me the half was plenty, the bf was just a tad bit hungrier so he got a whole. Meat: The meat is sliced fresh right in front of you, very flavorful and actually REAL meat, definitely NOT that slimey, jellied, compressed "meat" that you can get at other places. Plus they put quite a substantial amount of meat in your sub. The meat offerings are not just your standard ham & turkey, but have items like peppered turkey, peppered beef, salami & smoked chicken. Cheese: We were told that provolone is the cheese that usually comes with the subs, but that we could switch it out with any of their cheese offerings (swiss, pepper jack, american...). They also slice their cheese fresh. Veggies: They dress their subs with lettuce, onion, tomato, salt, pepper, oil, vinegar & oregano. I think the oregano was a really nice touch and gave a different flavor element to the sub sandwich. I even appreciate their preparation of their veggies, the shredded lettuce, the tomato, onion & pickles sliced really thin to ensure not one item overpowers one another. So, they do charge extra (15¢) for pickles, jalapeños, olives & banana peppers, BUT c'mon people, they give a lot it for 15¢ and in my opinion totally worth it. Dressings: They offer a number of different dressings if you don't want the oil & vinegar (mayo, mustard, spicy mustard, ranch & thousand island). Overall: I love this little sub shop! Wish I lived closer so I could enjoy these sub sanwiches on a regular basis. This "mom & pop" shop is a gem among the shops in the downtown Gainesville area. The ladies who work here are genuinely nice and that kind of service makes a sub taste just a little bit better. :) read more

I fell into this sub shop by chance Saturday, I was at a truck show downtown and was walking around and found it and I will tell you I am lucky I did. Best sandwich I've had in years the bread was on point the fresh meat ham and turkey and cheese and lettuce and mayonnaise and mustard unbelievable sandwich. Very nice staff. Hubby and I each had a half sandwich and they were substantial. The bread was very fresh, even if it was a little too much for me (I'm not a bread person). I ordered banana peppers and black olives which were an extra 15 cents, but they gave you a generous portion for your money, so I didn't mind the additional charge. Dino Subs in Arlington TX has been the five year raining champ of subs in my opionion. That was until today, Hungry Hippo Subs dethroned the king of subs in North Texas. This happened about 8 months ago but I forgot to post it. I will say this place is good. We went out of our way to go there for the 2nd time and to show a friend. They were a little rude the first time around but good enough to warrant a 2nd trip while traveling through. My friend and I weren't that hungry but he wanted to try it out. We decided to split it as we weren't that hungry, however he's one of those super anti vegetable eaters so I asked if they could just leave the vegetables off half of it and they told me no. It had to be all vegetable or no vegetable. And they make it to order right there in front of you. Really?! That's just too much to ask for. I'm putting you out that much?! Also I'm saving you money. Let alone she was SUPER rude about it. And it was the same ladies that were rude the previous time because I had asked if the lemonade was made in store. I love fresh lemonade. So I said Never mind and that we will find somewhere else to go. And she said "fine! ll do it." as I politely declined and we left. The sandwiches are huge and being on the road we couldn't refrigerate them and it would have been wasteful to purchase two. The reason for writing this now is because we are driving through again and when I brought trying it out again, because it sounded delicious, my friend was insulted by the mere consideration of going back. They have gone through some changes is the past few months and at certain points the qualities dipped but its back again now better than ever.
