We ordered two combination dinner meals. They both were greasy, mushy, fried rice wasn't classic Chinese fried rice, just white rice turned brown with something. Eggrolls had nothing in it except moldy tasting cabbage and were greasy over cooked. The chicken on a stick and teriyaki were good and so were the chicken wings, but that is all we were happy with... won't be going back. read more

I have crossed this restaurant many times going to work on my vaccine clinic and decided to call an order and pick it up. It was a snowy day and was not busy but still willing to go and pick up the foods. I ordered one of my favorites dishes; beef chow fun. The rice noodle was way over cooked and was mushy. The pieces of beef was not tender but was a tough leftover pieces. There was hardly any veggies ( sprout etc) at all. It is still in the fridge and by first time throwing away Chinese food . The second was a house fried rice . The beef slices again was tough, shrimp that was chewy and rice over cooked and mushy. The staff at Hunan is very friendly from each experience I have had for both in-house dining and takeout. They do offer delivery, within a limited area. They are conveniently located on Minot Avenue in a well establish commercial area with high traffic. Those heading to Minot or Mechanic Falls have a good Chinese spot to stop at before reaching their destination. Keep in mind the Lewiston/Auburn area has as many Chinese restaurants as it does Dunkin. I tend to stick to my usual General Tso Chicken and I have always been happy with the quality and quantity they provide. The chicken pieces are a bit on the smaller side and the sauce is much thicker than most other local establishments. I order the combination which comes with the General Tso Chicken, a couple miniature chicken wings, fried rice and chicken fingers. I would give them 4 stars, but their delivery service tends to take longer than most. They are apologetic on delivery, but an improvement in the time it takes to deliver would earn them the extra star. read more

I wanted to leave a glowing review, but I just can't do it. Let's talk about fees. Fees seem to be the most popular thing on the menu at Hunan House. Really, an ordering fee? A credit card fee? Build these in to your prices. Don't nickel and dime us. You got me with those fees once, but it won't happen again. You have great food, but just charge me for the food. We ordered takeout while we were staying safe at home. I was really excited to see coconut shrimp on the menu, since I LOVE coconut, and shrimp, and it's not usually common to find it at a takeout Chinese restaurant. My husband went with the tried and true General. First the apps - we got the mini platter, which was crab rangoons, chicken wings and boneless spare ribs. The rangoons were SUPER greasy, soggy and not hot (we live about ten minutes from the restuarant). I'm not a wing person, but my husband said they were average. The ribs were fatty and really chewy and somewhat "hard." Not great. The coconut shrimp was okay, but again, greasy. It came with four little pieces of broccoli (as a veg lover I'm used to being disappointed by the meager veg in most Chinese takeout entrees - more garnish than anything else), which were nicely cooked. But the sauce - holy cow was it thick and sweet. It was as if they had put a little coconut flavoring into a half-cup of sweetened condensed milk. It was also separated... not very attractive. The only way I could eat the meal was to use a slotted spoon to pull out the shrimp and broccoli, and add the rice (which was good) to soak up most of the sauce. Yikes. The General Tso's wasn't bad (though the broccoli wasn't very appetizing-looking), my my husband didn't like it much - he said it wasn't terribly flavorful and he wouldn't get it again. I've lived in California for 27 before I moved to Maine. Chinese restaurants there are as authentic as you can get to food in China. And it was really good. From the coastal cities, to the desert areas, there are some fabulous Chinese restaurants. I never expected to find anything of that caliber around here, but I was wrong. We went to Hunan House yesterday,m and we were amazed. Their wonton and hot and sour soups were amazing. We also had the Mongolian beef, which was delicious, and some fried rice. First class, really. We shall go back to try more of their dishes. read more

I stopped in for lunch and the buffet was not to shabby. It was very clean inside with refreshing ac. The buffet was limited in options, but made up for it in quality. The Mongolian pork was tender and the vegetables were sautéed evenly. At 6.75 for lunch it's worth the stop. read more

I called in a decent sized order the night before and asked for it to be delivered at 11:20am the next day, since they didn't start taking orders until 11:00 I figured that was easiest. When 11:30 rolled around and they still hadn't shown up, I called and they said they were just about to leave... so I was a little off put by that. The food they delivered was just average Chinese takeout. The portions were massive and everything was really hot. So hot actually, the styrofoam containers they came in were all melted together.. something I didn't even know was possible. Food and service terrible. Last time I ordered only the rice was edible. My spring roll was barely cooked, they forgot the rice, and I got an argument when I insisted that they make it right and send the driver back over. I ordered a tenderloin dish that was inedible. $35 and I only ate the rice. Every order in the last year has been messed up. The ribs are way over cooked. Second time...if you order online, it doesn't go through...the online order charges you, but they don't tell anyone...I waited 2 hours and called them and the guy on the phone said it would be here in 20 minutes, they got slammed...with 7 orders...after 2.5 hours I called and the owner said the order was never placed...we were already charged...nothing showed...she actually said on the phone that it was my fault for not calling and confirming the order...now I have to figure out what to do about dinner. This used to be our "go to" place for Chinese but no longer so. In recent years, the quality of the food has nosedived. Rice is sticky and gooey. Chicken tastes awful. There is nothing fresh or inviting about anything that they offer. (If I had to give them credit for something, the lo mein is okay.) Chicken fingers like rubber. Tons of grease with every order. Very disappointing because they used to be so much better. They simply have no desire to excel. Mediocre or less is okay for them. Too bad. It is a convenient location. By the way, the dining area could use a major cleaning and paint job at least to take it from the 1980s to the 2000s. We now go to Ocean Pearl in Oxford which is extraordinary and a gem of a find. I would give 0 stars if that was an option for Hunan House. I have complained about the food and got nothing more than a "we're sorry." read more

I had my first experience with Hunan house today. I was ordering a Pu Pu Platter for two and chicken fried rice to be delivered. The phone call was a little bit long because there was some confusion with the street name. However, the woman who took my call said the food would arrive in 45min-1hr but it probably got to my friends house in like 20 minutes. We have ordered from this restaurant for years and generally have not had issues. Sometimes the chicken wings would be dry and overcooked but otherwise the food was edible but at times not very tasty. We celebrate special occasions by ordering from Hunan. More and more there is some small problem, but on the 22nd of July when for her birthday we ordered takeout to surprise her and her husband we had a major issue. I ordered online and paid in full plus a generous tip of ten dollars. When the food arrived, very timely, we settled down to eat, only to find the Crab Rangoon's were omitted, no where to be found. They are her favorite and she was gracious in her disappointment. I went onsite and found the order was charged for the Rangoon's. I called the restaurant to report it and the woman insisted she had packed them herself so we must have gotten them. She all but accused me of being a liar. I give this rating 3 stars for the years we were basically satisfied but I can promise Hunan house has had our last order. read more

Not the best place for chinese food... I've even gotten old ribs there before. But. They're quick, friendly, and in a convenient location.

We had not had take out for quite awhile and were really looking forward to having some Chinese. We could not have been any more disappointed! The only thing that was actually edible, was the egg roll. My wife's combination plate was disgusting. The beef lo mein was sticky, mushy and flavorless. Her fried rice was a ball of mush. The crab rangoon was not cooked enough. The dough was raw on the inside, the filling was grainy. The chicken teriyaki was too dry to bite. We would have had a better meal spending our $20 at McDonald's. I will NEVER order from this dive again! We should have been tipped off when we pulled up and the entire restaurant was completely empty at 730pm on a Saturday! read more

Restaurant is never consistent with their times of opperation. One week I can order at a certain time and other occurrences i am unable to order delivery or "they don't allow picked up". Very unsatisfied with their customer service, not from just this instance but from numerous times I have attempted to eat from a local company. Also, the online website is not accurate. It is never a pleasant experience when ordering. Overall, this restaurant is mediocre and the issues do not overcome the downfalls. read more

Be aware when a place starts buffet it's on its way out, if you can cook don't trick people into thinking they would get their money's worth. The 2 dishes which we order most frequently (Twice Cooked Pork & Mongolian Beef) are excellent & compare favorably with other Chinese restaurants. I also love the Orange Chicken. The sauce is great but the texture of the chicken is somewhat off-putting but still fresh. Hot & Sour soup is fine. Many like the buffet, but we felt the temperature was a little off for some dishes. Ambiance is not great, but we still prefer Hunan House to other Chinese restaurants we have tried - even in Portland. Service has been fine. read more
