While on a weekend trip with my family, this was the closest Chinese restaurant to where we were staying. After eating American cuisine for most of our trip, we were in the mood for Chinese takeout, and this place seemed to have a wider selection on their menu. I called in my order and a friendly woman on the phone told me that my order will be ready in 15 minutes. On a Friday evening, they were fairly busy and I overheard from other patrons that they have been regulars since nearly a decade. Due to the influx of takeout orders, I ended up waiting an additional 15 minutes, but it was understandable. Eventually my order was ready, and after a 10 minute drive, the food was still piping hot. -The Hunan Chicken had a crispy exterior and was coated in a sweet and sour spicy sauce. This entree also came with a box of complimentary white rice. The sauce was on the mild side, but I thought the sauces in this dish complimented each other very well. -Combination Low Mein was okay. It mainly consisted of chicken and very few pieces of beef and shrimp. The noodles and vegetables in the dish were cooked well and tasty though. -Combination Fried Rice contained a better amount of various meats compared to the Low Mein. It was flavorful and paired well with the entree dishes. -Kung Pao Shrimp had a good amount of zucchini, celery, and peanuts. The shrimp were plump and the sauce had a nice kick. Really good! For a Chinese restaurant in the small town of La Pine, I was impressed with the quality of their food and customer service. Additionally, I am proud to say that Hunan Chinese restaurant exceeded my expectations. read more

The hot and sour soup is the best I have ever had. This is a gem of a restaurant in La Pine. I had the Schezwan Chicken and fried rice. The dish was loaded with green peppers, onions, and celery. The fried rice needs a little work as their is little added to the rice. Needs a perk. My friend had the fish and fries and he said it was just ok. After a long day of hiking, nothings better than grabbing some takeout and unwinding on the couch. The trails of Smith Rock were absolutely breathtaking but afterward my partner and family were starving and we all collectively agreed that Chinese food would be the best idea. We checked Yelp and came across Hunan. We were not alone in wanting Chinese takeout on a Friday night. It honestly look like the whole town was there because the line was out the door. As it's a small town, small talk was definitely a thing that happened in the line and through these conversations we found out that it is a family owned local favorite. Which I'm all about, it's so important that we support small businesses especially during these times. With that being said, if you're in a rush be sure to call ahead! Staff is so efficient and friendly! The daughter of the owner is the cashier and take the orders and the rest of the family is in the back cooking. Food was very affordable, fresh and delicious! We ordered the house chow mein, house friend rice, combo chow fun, kung pao shrimp and orange chicken. Everything was really good but I definitely had seconds of the orange chicken! Very pleasant find in La pine we were traveling through and saw the billboard we went in and the food was excellent. The service was incredible. They are so friendly and so nice. We had pork fried rice and hunam chicken. Both dishes were so big we could not finish. read more

It started with a grunt and pointing to a table which is never impressive. The egg flower soup had a corn base and was heavy on the gelatin used to thicken it. My favorite dish, pork fried rice, was heavy on the soy and salt and was also gummy. Cashew chicken was ok. The fried shrimp and fried pork was way too greasy to eat. I should have known better but I wanted it to be a success, it wasn't. I ate very little and took nothing home for leftovers. Disappointing meal. Won't return. Too bad. read more

We had an absolutely wonderful lunch here today! We are visiting family so we had a large group but they were more than happy to accommodate us and the service was just amazing. All of our food was prepared fresh to order and it looked, smelled, and tasted delicious! We have eaten there twice for take out , due to Covid . The first time two months ago , the shrimp with lobster sauce was tasty over the white rice . Wasn't impressed they used frozen carrots and peas as part of the recipe , but FRESH broccoli . In general it was good enough to go again . We are in the middle of moving here . Tonight we went and picked up an order . I had the same thing , but a worse experience. A great portion , but the shrimp were very mushy . Only 4 weren't . The broccoli was totally fresh , but there was so much broccoli to ratio of anything else . I felt like I was eating vegetarian. Again frozen peas and carrots , and a few water chestnuts. The sauce was bland tonight as well . My Granddaughter's BBQ pork Low Mein was ok . Nothing to write home about . Sauce was bland as well , and she had to put some Panda Express Teriyaki sauce on it to give more flavor . The egg flower soup which some people call egg drop soup was tasty ,if you like corn ! It needed many more ingredients ! It was like a water base corn chowder with nothing in it either . I have been to a lot of Chinese restaurants, in a few states . TAIS DYNASTY in North Bend , Oregon ( Coos Bay Area) is the absolute best EVER . To be honest , I prefer Panda Express over Hunans . After tonight , we will drive to Bend , or wait till we are in Coos Bay ! I was pretty bummed tonight . Just because the town is small doesn't mean there can't be a great restaurant. I love this place. I love they allow substitutions. Some places don't which I have never understood. I don't eat meat and I do appreciate they allow substitutions for meat to deep fried breaded tofu. Considering you're in eastern Oregon in La Pine, the expectations for highly authentic Chinese food should not be high. Going in to the restaurant I had no set expectations, however I was pleasantly surprised at what Hunan had to offer. The waitress was very friendly and the food tasted pretty good and seemed fresh. Prices are fantastic for the price you as well. Overall, for serving Americanized Chinese food in the middle of eastern Oregon, it was pretty good. Excellent food and quick service. The ambience is a step above high school cafeteria, but the great tasting food makes up for that. A classier setting would earn 5 stars. We ordered Mongolian Beef and Green Beans in Black Bean Sauce. The beef was cooked nicely and served over a crispy rice noodle. Green Beans were lightly stir fried and still had crunch. This is a "OK" place in my book. It's good for La Pine I guess if you haven't experience other Chinese restaurant in other places like Bend. But overall, it a not bad place for lunch. The owner Simon is nice and so is his wife, I think the family have been here fore many years and I know they love what they do. I've seen the family operating here since their kids where baby...they are great people. As Chinese food go, it's not the best, but it is the only one in La Pine that offer this type of food.
