I was so bummed to find out my favorite fast casual spot in downtown Alameda has closed its doors for good! I was in the area looking to grab a bite before heading to Southie to catch the Hawks manhandle the Niners. As usual, the restaurant that I always look to forward to visiting is Hummus Republic. Once I found some parking around the corner, I was happily skipping down the block towards the entrance, until... The place was dark, and no one was inside. I had to do a double take to make sure it wasn't one of the scheduled closed days. Sure enough, it was not. There was also no signage on the window or any mention of a vacation or emergency. It was just... closed. As I looked inside, I noticed some furniture and decor had already been removed, so I knew it was beyond the point of no return. In any event, it is indeed a dark time for me, as I frequented Hummus Republic quite often. Yes, I know it is a chain, but the nearest one that I know of now is all the way in Livermore near the outlets. Honestly, it's not completely a shock though, as this particular location was often empty, and I also heard that rent is quite high. There are also alternative Mediterranean shops in the vicinity, such as Tahina and Q's, but none of them combine the level of freshness, convenience and overall value as Hummus Republic. Although it's a lazy comparison used a zillion times before, just think of Hummus Republic as the Chipotle of Mediterranean fare. Depending on who you get serving you, portions can range from large to absolutely gargantuan. It's no exaggeration when I say that a single bowl serving is pretty much enough for both lunch and dinner. Coming from a pig like yours truly, that is saying a lot! Sadly, this exact address also seems to have a high turnover rate, as I have seen a myriad of various businesses sprout up there in recent years. Hopefully the next tenant will provide something to fill the inevitable void. RIP Hummus Republic! You will be sorely missed! They have a craft soda machine too (but the diet cola has been out of service for a while ) The staff here are very friendly and make sure that you get the value for your money with their serving sizes. I love this location and restaurant because I know I will always be taken care of. The chicken is always well prepared, tender, and juicy. The hummus options are delicious. The street mix is a must. I stopped here during the weekday for lunch since I work in Alameda. Parking is very difficult to find since this place is located near Park Street and they don't have their own parking lot. Hummus Republic is similar to SAJJ with their build your own bowl concept. Basically the Mediterranean version of Chipotle. I like this place because they have tons of topping options compared to SAJJ. I got the gyro meat which is made with beef and lamb. The gyro meat had flavor, but I wish they charred it like other places to have a crispy edge, similar to bacon. Their gyro meat looks more like uncooked turkey bacon, which is unappealing. All the veggies/toppings are fresh. You also get to top off your bowl with a variety of sauces. If I'm craving Mediterranean food, I always come here or Tahina which is a few blocks away. Hummus Republic is such a great spot, and it totally reminds me of SAJJ (my absolute favvvv), but since there aren't any local SAJJ locations, this place is a great alternative. There are so many options to customize your meal, but one unique item for me is the feta--it adds such a nice texture and flavor to the bowls and they dont charge extra for it like SAJJ. Honestly, the bowls are big enough for two meals, which makes it feel like a great value. The first time I came, I ordered a wrap, and it was MASSIVE--so stuffed it practically burst at the seams. It tasted amazing, but it was a challenge to eat, so now I stick to the bowls for the sake of convenience (and less mess!). Customer service is another highlight. I had this for lunch a few days ago and can't stop thinking about it. My friend works in Alameda so that's how I found out about it, and I'm so happy. Considering the bowl made its way to me a few hours after ordering so it was still that good at not peak freshness. The portion was way to much for me, so I had a lot leftover (not complaining). The food looked yummy. It's check in and check it out. My first time here. It took me a while to peruse the menu and decide what I want in the bowl. The choices are great from what I see on display. The male employee guided me along with my selection. The bowl starts with a base, three scoops of hummus, protein, unlimited sides of veggies and finally the dressing. My bowl was filled with Mediterranean couscous, spinach, three hummus, four falafel, veggies and traditional tahini dressing. I also added two dolmaes (additional $1.00) Make it to go, please. Cost with tax and tip included was $18. Menu is posted on the window before going in to the business. Laminated menus are available at the counter to review. There is also a menu board on the wall. I was excited to get the bowl with falafel that I forgot to ask for beets. Okay a return trip is necessary to get their strawberry lychee beverage and another bowl. This has been one of my go to spots in the past couple months! It's like a Mediterranean chipotle, similar to Cava. I love the customization of each step and the portions are generous but quality varies. I usually get a bowl with the chicken shawarma and lemon chicken. I've gotten falafel once and it was dry so I stuck to chicken. The chickpea croutons are a MUST! They're better at lunch from my experience lol. You can't really go wrong with any of the spreads or bases. For the sauces, I like the red pepper tahini, grandma's hot sauce and Moroccan hot sauce. I was very happy to find this Mediterranean place in Alameda. You order either a pita, wrap, or bowl, and then you customize it however you want. You can choose a protein then add the extras you want. Some of the extras cost extra, but there are also plenty of free extras as well. Some of the free extras (like beets) are pretty skimpy though. One thing I learned is there are different types of couscous. I've always been accustomed to the Israeli couscous, which are tiny pearl-like pastas. But here, they have Moroccan couscous, which is more like a grain. This tasted great in the salad. What we had.. + Chicken shawarma wrap - Very well put together and very tasty. However, it was a bit smaller than wraps from Kebab Shop or Halal Guys. + Chicken shawarma bowl - I added a lot of extras, and somehow it all tasted great together. The hummus was quite a bit thicker than I'm used to. The texture wasn't conducive to mixing with your salad or for dipping your pita in, but still very tasty. I was craving some food from Daphne's when I realize the location at South Shore had closed. Ironically, there is a hummus republic that is very close to where I live in Orange County. However, my first taste of this place is in Alameda. The place is located off a side street very close to Kaiser Hospital. Parking is a little difficult, but not so much so that I had to park obscenely far. When I answered, it is quaint clean, and everyone was absolutely friendly. When they found out, I have never been here before the quickly assisted me in understanding how the menu worked and how to place an order. They even allow me to sample the various hummus that I was not familiar with The food taste amazing and absolutely love it, and they are very generous with their portions (which I doubt it when I read reviews). This has quickly became one of my favorite places back in the Bay Area and will definitely be coming back here when I visit my parents. read more

What a find! There are a number of Mediterranean fast and easy places around the Alameda theater area but this new one just opened 4 months ago and it's worth a visit. It's kind of similar in concept to Chipotle where you can pick your own bowl, pita or wrap style. Then you can pick your protein and they accommodate gluten free and vegan!!! Then you add your favorite flavor of hummus, veggies and sauces. For me, as a vegetable hound, the fact that all the veggies were unlimited (as many or as few as you want) is heavenly. I picked beef and the partner picked chicken shawarma filling. He had the wrap and I had the bowl. If you are doing paleo, you can have the bowl with steamed garbanzos. I had garbanzos and a spoonful of cous cous. And then came the greens and beets tomatoes cucumbers onions cabbage veggie street mix (my favorite) and the red hummus. It had spices but wasn't too hot. Service was excellent. I went at 5. We also had the best beverages. They have fancy sodas and my favorite was the strawberry lemonade. I had just been cycling so I was dehydrated and was delighted that the lemonade was bottomless! I will be going frequently as I got full without feeling vaguely sick from too much rich food and the food was about as clean as you can get and full of flavor.
