A Turkish friend of mine recommended Hummus Express to me 2 years ago (I can't thank you enough Emry), and it is still the best restaurant recommendation I have received in 27 years of residing in Bakersfield.
This place never ceases to "WOW" me. Although they offer a somewhat limited menu, they really know how to capitalize on the items they do offer. The owner/cook is very friendly and accommodating, and frequently speaks with the patrons to get their feedback and inform them of new items. Ready for a tour of my favorites? I'll start with the basics.
First, the hummus. Nothing fancy or weird. No oddball flavors or added items to change the original taste. Just real, creamy, smooth and delicious, and served with homemade pita bread. I could eat it every day for a snack or as part of my meal.
If you eat here, you must order the lentil soup. For me and my tastes, there is none better in California. The spicing and texture are always spot on and I cannot leave here without it, whether as part of my meal or in a container to go.
I love the traditional hot tea. A mug of strong, hot black tea with fresh mint leaves on a cold winter evening compliments many of the items they serve.
My pre-teen daughter always gets the same item, the California Fries. It's French fries covered with chunks of spiced chicken or beef and served with a garlic sauce. My daughter always gets the chicken with no sauce. The portion is so large, there's no way she can eat it all. Luckily, she has me to help her out!
My wife is vegan and has very few options at most restaurants in Bakersfield. And being the only vegan in the family, she often defers to the majority regarding where we eat. But there is no compromise here. There are vegan items listed on the menu (including the hummus and the lentil soup) and the owner will make plenty of recommendations for those who are vegan. Lately, my wife has ordered the Vegan Plate, with lentils, bulgur wheat, olives, radishes, dried French onions and a vegetable relish. I am an omnivore, with a carnivorous bent, and I think it's very good.
Today the owner came over and told me to try the Kibbeh. Kibbeh are finely ground bulgur, beef and onions, delicately spiced, made into a shell, stuffed with ground beef, onions and nuts, rolled into a ball and deep fried in oil. He told me they taste like little bites of heaven. Since I had already ordered, I made a mental note to try them on my next visit. A few minutes later, the owner brought some Kibbeh to my table and asked me and my daughter to try them. He also brought yogurt he made himself to eat with it. I tasted them and he's right. They are little savory bites of heaven. But not any less tasty and delicious was the homemade yogurt. I could have eaten a quart of it. They need to offer it on the menu on its own.
I hope you try Hummus Express. And I hope you find it as delicious and authentic as my family does. read more
