I finally got to try the Hummingbird Food Truck last night at the Food Truck Summit and I must say it was my favorite of the night. I got the mushroom soup for $3 and the chicken sandwich for $3. Both were awesome! The mushroom soup was thick with a lot of mushroom in in and chunks of bread in it. The flavor was spot on and it was creamy...absolutely loved it! The chicken sandwich was great! It was crispy and had great flavor to it. Just loved both dishes. I'm just disappointed I didn't try the two other items they had for sale last night! read more

I regret not ordering the other two items they had last night (meatballs and italian fries), but I thoroughly enjoyed the Chicken Milanese sandwich and Mushroom soup. The milanese was perfectly bread and the chicken was crispy delicious. The mushroom soup was very hearty and had great flavors. I would defnitely stop here for a bite if I was in the Evanston area. Good to see a food truck finally getting approved to cook in a full kitchen. Hopefully Chicago will soon change their food truck ordinances. read more

I had heard about this gourmet food truck and was excited to see they would be parked outside the new Temperance Brewery for their grand opening party. There were hundreds of people there for the party, and Hummingbird had 2 items: cheeseburger and fries. The burger: good pattie, one slice cheese and 2 cold buns--thats all! The fries were flat cuts with cheese, etc on them. better than burger, but far from a healthy meal. And, of course, they were way overpriced. so disappointed. read more

We went to the Food Truck Social event. We decided to try the lamb sandwich in this truck! It was really tasty, It had collard greens (our Portuguese couve galega), onion, garlic and the lamb perfectly cooked. But I think that it's very expensive for a food truck! When food served in a truck is more expensive than a place where they cook to order and you can have a seat something is wrong! Definitely I'am not an apologist of trucks! read more

Late this morning, I was Lance Armstronging my bicycle in Evanston, riding from the police station (don't ask) to the public library. As I performed a heart-in-the-mouth screeching left turn from Chicago Ave. onto Clark Street I spied--whoa!--the Hummingbird truck. Now, I've been reading about this gastro-wagon revolution a-brewing (umm, why does "gastro-wagon" sound like some sort of inflammatory bowel disease?) and now I had the chance to participate! The luncheon choices were on a propped up chalkboard: chicken tacos, white bean soup or meatball sammie. Now I loves me a great navy bean soup, all fragrant and hammy, but while I was standing there, a woman asked if it was vegetarian. The answer was yes--and I started imagining a few sorry beans floating in dishwater, so I took a pass. Sorry PETA, onion soup's gotta have a rich beef broth base and bean soup's gotta squeal with piggie. It's the law. Chicken tacos sounded kinda meh, so I opted for the meatball sandwich with a Berghof root beer. I was proud of myself when I refused the proffered french fries--Thanksgiving's coming and I gotta save a few carbos for that. It was 8 bucks for the sammie and soda, a little pricy methinks, but what the hell, this is an Experience. Now, here is where things got a little difficult. This is street food. I'm on a bike, there's no seating, lawn chairs, park benches or anything else in sight, and on top of that, it's mid-November and barely 40 degrees out. So here's where the business model gets a little fuzzy for me: street food in a climate that is somewhat uninhabitable 6 months out of the year. The meatball sandwich was good, no doubt about that; but I was sitting on a cold slab of concrete on the stoop of some student apartment building across the street with residents giving me the hairy eyeball for dining uninvited on their porch. The cheese congealed in moments in the cold, the three high-quality meatballs rapidly became chilled hors d'oeuvres and the french bread disintegrated, dripping marinara sauce everywhere. So, I gotta ask, should some thought be put into designing dishes that could be eaten while standing? A hearty stew in a paper bowl with a plastic spoon sounds workable. Mac & cheese with bacon sounds like something I could eat while standing, as does chicken & rice. But the meatball grinder--and I suspect--the chicken tacos--seem like items that are destined to disintegrate and fall all over the place unless you were seated. And I couldn't find a warm comfy place to sit. You see my problem here. So the long and short of it: high-quality food, a little overpriced, served by nice, friendly folks but then--nowhere to eat it. I'm thinking I would've been happier with a little lesser-quality meatball sandwich, a little cheaper, in a hot dog joint with tables, booths and central heating. But that's just me. I think this concept will ROCK as soon as the temps get above 60 next year. read more

So so disappointed in the Hummingbird Kitchen food truck at the Chicago Force home opener at Evanston Township HS. It was a great day for a football game. The weather was great. The food truck was perfectly poised to do great business. However, the food truck ran out of beverages and a majority of their offering (at halftime) and there was a long wait to get food that they hadn't run out of. The crowd was not overly large. Luckily, a friend's boyfriend was nice enough to run out and pick up us food and drink. The food truck seemed ill-prepared for what should've been a great day for football and food truck food. read more

Great burger and fries, but not so good on the price -- $11 for burger and fries. I'm not sure of the cost structure of a food truck vs. a brick and mortar location, but I'd like to think that food trucks would be lower cost structure. Not the case with Hummingbird. read more

I was fortunate to get to eat from Hummingbird Kitchen at the Food Truck Social Event. I had the Octopus salad and it was delicious. What a nice blend of grilled octopus, celery, dill and fava beans, amongst other things... They told us they are not allowed to sell in Chicago, because they have a working kitchen in their truck, so you will only find them in Evanston.... read more

I tried these guys at one of the Evanston park events. They really didn't have their act together on the ordering process but they were cool and collected about it regardless. We ordered a chicken sandwich and a cheddarburger with two orders of fries. I thought the fries were pretty dry and tasteless which surprises me given the other reviews. My experience, being what it was, was definitely a lot less than I expected, especially considering that they run two very popular Evanston restaurants. read more

this food truck was at the food truck festival this past weekend, and we tried the chicken sandwich and the fries.. Got to say, i was thoroughly not so impressed.. the chicken was kindof dry, although the pesto sauce made up for it. but the fries were delicious, with the chile oregano garlic seasoning. Not so sure if i would get anything again, maybe the mushroom soup and burger. they dont seem to have much variety on their menu, only the chicken sandwich, fries, seedless grapes, mushroom soup and the char burger. when we got to the front to order, we had to wait another 10 minutes because they were held back, and almost took an hour to order and finally get our food. not sure if the wait was worth it. read more

the street food revolution has reached evanston, illinois, with a sparkling white truck, parked at various evanston locations, usually with a small crowd gathered. so far, they have opened for 2 hours at a time at the corner of clark and chicago ave in evanston, and at the NU football stadium for games, and usually around the noon hour. the menu changes, but there are usually two sandwich type entrees, a soup and a side. the menu can be found on their website, which changes often. they seem to have a found a corner (clark and chicago, in evanston) but i'm sure that will expand, but you can find out where and when on their website or by following them on twitter or facebook. i guess that's the way we modern people communicate these days. i have to talk about the italian fries first. the most delicious fries i have ever had, and i have had a lot of fries. crisp, with fresh garlic, oregano and chili flake. the smell alone made me teary-eyed as i walked back to my car, wondering how anything could smell so fine. so good, i went back for another cup. grilled chicken sandwich with buffalo mozzarella...a tender, juicy, big chicken fillet and a ball of fresh mozzarella. peppers and onions. delicious. steak tacos....tender hunks of meat on two delicious corn tortillas, with some kind of cabbage and radish slaw. superb. the only soup i have tried is the pumpkin....dense and delicious. i can't wait to try more. and the prices are so reasonable, too. sandwiches were six bucks. for that kind of quality, that can't be beat. i live in evanston and look forward to more great meals. this is a great idea and i hope there is more really gourmet, ribsticking food like this on the way. i wish the hummingbird folks good luck, but with food this good and easy to get, they will no doubt have success. read more

Hummingbird Kitchen was disappointing this evening at the Food Truck Fest in Evanston. I was overcharged for the food I bought. Their chalk board sign standing right next to me read $3 and when I pointed this out to the cashier she said, "sorry, they are $4 each" and she refused to honor the price written on their sign. That is BAD BUSINESS. It isn't the extra money, it's the principal of the matter. It leaves customers feeling ripped off. If I didn't have two hungry kids with me I would not have contributed to their sales, and certainly won't in the future. read more
